We are pleased and excited to welcome you to the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show. This marks a special time for the event because after more than 25 years of growing from an idea and tight-knit gathering into the largest cruise conference and trade show in the Caribbean and Latin America, we are continuing full speed ahead with the most meetings in the Trade Show’s history, including the first-ever scheduled session between shore excursion executives and Pavilion holders. Of course, the opportunities will be available for every attendee, as the cruise industry has again proven its commitment to doing business in the region. Part of this proof comes from more than 100 top-level executives from FCCA Member Lines, including the biggest congregation of presidents and above, who are all here the same reason you are: to develop understanding, relationships and, of course, business. This theme of partnership will take the show’s center stage throughout what you will experience over the next few days of meetings, workshops, meals and networking events with this historic delegation of executives from numerous sectors, one of which can surely impact your business. Plus, everyone here has some involvement in and knowledge of the cruise industry, representing most ends of its multifaceted spectrum, along with a wealth of expertise and experience crucial to the industry’s success. Partnership also forms the foundation of both this event and the FCCA’s mission, and we have found that sometimes that is as simple as bringing together both parties to share ideas, discuss trends and potential projects, cultivate invaluable relationships and have some old-fashioned fun in the process. That is why we offer numerous events throughout the year, ranging from exclusive Platinum receptions to open-registration and large-scale ones like this, which have paved a long track record of fostering the mutual understanding and bilateral partnerships that lead to sustainable success. So please prepare yourself to see this on display over the next few days while enjoying the enchanting Puerto Rico, festivities and local fare, and chances to improve your cruise tourism business.

WELCOME MESSAGE

¡Bienvenidos! We are thrilled to welcome you back to Puerto Rico for the FCCA’s 26th Annual Cruise Conference and Trade Show. Over the past year we witnessed how the cruise industry continues making significant contributions to Caribbean destinations, and the dialogue and partnerships that take place during this important event set the stage for continuing to strengthen our position as the premiere cruising region in the world. As hosts to the FCCA Cruise Conference and Trade Show over the span of four consecutive years, we recognize the responsibility bestowed upon Puerto Rico to not only stage a productive conference, but to serve as industry leaders through advancements that showcase the potential for the cruise industry’s growth in all of our destinations. Since we last hosted you in San Juan, Puerto Rico surpassed our forecasts with the arrival of a record 1.8 million visitors through 558 port visits. We welcomed 6 ships on their maiden voyage to San Juan, and trained hundreds of destination stakeholders with the tools necessary to elevate the guest experience. During this visit, we hope you can explore some of what makes Puerto Rico a treasure trove yet to be discovered in full. Catch a glimpse of our historic town centers and dance to the latest beats, tantalize your taste buds with “criollo” cuisine and feel the adrenaline-rush of ziplining in the mountain zone. The myriad of attractions found in Puerto Rico is a reflection of the range and diversity of experiences that millions of guests who make the Caribbean their preferred cruising destination get to enjoy. I look forward to greeting you and wish all delegates a productive and successful conference in Puerto Rico! Enjoy your stay and Discover Puerto Rico!

DISCOVER PUERTO RICO… THERE’S MORE TO THE ISLAND THAN BEAUTIFUL BEACHES & SAN JUAN Visitors Can Add History, Culture, Nature, Sports and Adventure to Their Trips Puerto Rico provides the ideal getaway for travelers seeking “beaches plus.” On the Island, visitors will find diverse geography and a wealth of activities, accommodations and restaurants. Whether visitors are looking for a stroll full of history and culture, trendy restaurants and bars; dancing salsa into the night; enjoying Puerto Rico’s delicacies and criollo flavor; or learning about outstanding unique natural resources the island of Puerto Rico offers all these experiences and more. San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico and the gateway to the Caribbean, offers a myriad of attractions to travelers, including the charming commercial and residential district of Old San Juan, world-class beachfront hotels in Condado and Isla Verde, casinos, exclusive shopping, museums, fine restaurants and trendy nightclubs. While Old San Juan has always been renowned for its rich culture and historic attractions, the city is constantly

26

evolving and reinventing itself while preserving its celebrated cultural past. No matter how many times you have visited San Juan there is always something new to discover. There are always secret corners and little-known spots full of charm and steeped in over 500 years of history, that remain unnoticed to the casual visitor in Old San Juan tour. This year a group of FCCA participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a very different perspective of the historic quarter when walking through the walled city’s blue cobblestoned streets, accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide from the Puerto Rico Historic Building Drawings Society. The tour explores how the city was built in this rocky island jutting out to the sea, observe the urban layout from an architectural and cultural point-of-view, its intricate constructive methods and the amazing

architectural details of the Spanish colonial buildings and defensive structures. The Island’s Taíno, Spaniard, African, LatinAmerican, and US influences have created a paradise for foodies and gourmet connoisseurs alike. Puerto Rican traditional fare, known as cocina criollo is spiced with flavors from all over the world and has been slowly blending to create amazing and delicious food and drink combinations. Because food is an intrinsic part of Puerto Rican culture, it is no wonder many of the social hotspots are located in or near locally-owned

businesses where one can delight one’s taste buds with an array of fresh and creative dishes and drinks. Visitors can enjoy the urban scene and step into the real Puerto Rico’s on their own or on tours such as the Santurce/San Juan Art and Food Walking Tour by Spoon Food Tours. Another Puerto Rican tradition is the making of some of the finest rums in the world. Puerto Rican rums are generally light, gold or dark – ideal for mixed drinks or on the rocks, depending on which type is selected. There are 24 different rums from Puerto Rico, one of which has been made

27

since 1880 at Hacienda Santa Ana in the town of Bayamón. Ron Del Barrilito has been made through an age-old process that makes these brand’s rums one-of-a-kind and among the best sipping rums in the world. The same blends that infuses Puerto Rican fare has also created a unique musical heritage and helped develop the four distinct genres of music, bomba, plena, seis, and the renowned salsa. The most traditional genres of folk music, bomba and plena, each feature a unique style and can usually be seen performed accompanied by traditional dancers. Bomba’s rhythm is played on drums and is described as a dialogue between dancer and drummer, as if the drummer were challenging the dancer to a rhythm and beat contest. Plena first appeared in Ponce, the second largest city in Puerto Rico, about 100 years ago, and became known for the stories it contained about the history and everyday life of the people. The décima, a style of songs sung with ten improvised couplets of eight syllables each, is the root of music indigenous to rural areas, called jíbaro or mountain country music. The most popular form of the décima is the seis with melodies accompanied by traditional Puerto Rican instruments such as the cuatro, a type of guitar, and güiro, a notched, hollowed-out gourd. The most popular of and influential of the four is salsa which encompasses many Afro-Latin sounds. Salsa’s

28

complexity and evolution has been enhanced by a series of instrumental combinations and cultural influences, ranging from Cuban son montuno and Yoruba ritual music, Puerto Rican bomba and plena, Dominican merengue, Afro-American jazz and rhythm and blues. In collaboration with different organizations and municipalities the Puerto Rico Tourism Company promotes 4 different Salsa Routes around the Island so music fans can gain insights into the origins and key sites of the fascinating history of this musical genre. To broaden the Island’s offer while upholding its commitment to protect the Islands’ natural resources and generate economic activity, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company created its Green Certification Program which focuses not only on tour operators, but also in community-based initiatives that enhance the well-being of communities as healthy places to visit, live and invest in. There are over 40 facilities and tour operators certified under this program and you can learn more about them at https://bit.ly/2vvNIp8. There are literally thousands of activities you can choose to enjoy in Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico you’ll find everything you can expect for an unforgettable travel experience; beautiful landscapes, entertainment, exquisite cuisine excellent service and one trip is just not enough. Discover Puerto Rico on your next vacation.

FCCA ESSAY CONTEST WINNER “MANY CRUISE PASSENGERS USE CRUISING AS A WAY TO SAMPLE DIFFERENT DESTINATIONS. WHAT IMPRESSION DOES MY COUNTRY LEAVE ON THESE PASSENGERS, AND HOW DOES IT OR SHOULD IT ATTRACT THEM BACK AS STAY-OVER GUESTS.” Imagine a Caribbean cruise as a colourful storybook with a kaleidoscope of tremendous history, famous landmarks and breathtaking scenery; would you not want to read it? As a cruise passenger, there is so much to do. Turn the first page and visualize the eighth wonder of the world - Harrison’s Cave. One visit and cruise visitors are left in awe as they journey through the natural formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Inside the cave, there are many interesting things for their eyes to capture. It is a visit that will remain on their minds forever.

Noel Allder 9 years old, St. Paul’s Primary School Barbados

Turn another page and feel the cool breeze across your forehead as you stand in the foliage of Bathsheba. This place of interest is known for surfing at an international level. One visit and cruise passengers will be craving the warm sunshine and cool breezes they probably would not experience in their country.

Are you ready to turn another page? Drop you right into the excitement of horseracing at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison. Located within St. Michael, cruise passengers have a unique opportunity to feel the adrenaline rush as horses stampede around the track fighting to be the winner. Each beat of the horses’ hooves is like the heartbeat of a cruise passenger wishing that they could get more and more of Barbados.

There is one page in this book that is a must read - our people. Bajans, as we are called, are critical to cruise passengers repeating their experience. We are the heartbeat of Barbados. We are warm and friendly. I may only be nine years old, but I think that if we let a cruise passenger pair up with a Barbadian, after that conversation, hotels will be filled with stay over guests. As we come to the end of our book, we must step into reality. The beauty, heritage and attractions of Barbados will certainly make cruise passengers rush to stay here. The question was asked, how should the impression of my country attract cruise passengers back as stay-over guests? My answer is simple; one taste of Barbados and cruise passengers are ready to book their long stay vacation. After all, Barbados is the Gem of the Caribbean Sea. Our imaginary book only begins to scratch the surface with three places of interest. However, in reality Barbados is not a destination that a cruise passenger can fully enjoy in one day. That is why incentives must be given to passengers to ensure that a cruise is not their only visit here. If I were the Prime Minister, I would offer cruise passengers discounts at various hotels and places of interest around Barbados. I know that they would come back for that. I would also get my peers to greet these passengers as they disembark their vessel and talk to them about the sights and attractions Barbados has to offer. What better way to have them form an impression than to talk to the children of Barbados?

FCCA ESSAY CONTEST WINNER “MANY CRUISE PASSENGERS USE CRUISING AS A WAY TO SAMPLE DIFFERENT DESTINATIONS. WHAT IMPRESSION DOES MY COUNTRY LEAVE ON THESE PASSENGERS, AND HOW DOES IT OR SHOULD IT ATTRACT THEM BACK AS STAY-OVER GUESTS.” Let us look first at what our visitors are saying now about St. Maarten. “We found the island to be dirty, graffiti everywhere and crime-ridden not to mention the mosquitoes,” this is just one opinion I saw on TripAdvisor. I disagree with this review because this person has not seen the island and its amazing features! The island has popular beaches where you get blown away by a plane’s jet stream, offers festive activities that will leave tourists speechless, possesses a hidden natural pool, and shares a border between France and Holland.

Maho Beach has dancing waves and is known for its low-flying planes as they land and take off. Believe it or not, Maho Beach is also famous for jet blasting, where people get blown away by the jet stream of a plane. Tourists will be so fascinated that it will tempt them to stay on the island and experience jet blasting again. In fact, St. Maarten has made several top-ten lists globally, as having the most exciting airport. This will also tempt tourists to return to our island.

Besides the airport, St. Maarten has great festival activities that are exuberant and entertaining. Carnival is the spirit of the island that fills people with exhilaration and where they disguise themselves in colorful costumes. St.Maarten’s former President of carnival also said that “carnival attracts 3,000 tourists every April.” Our Carnival’s slogan “Come and Experience life”, enthralls and tempts tourists by encouraging them to come and have an amazing time and to stay as guests. St. Maarten also boasts the best regatta in the Caribbean that attracts sailors from around the world. The island is vibrant, exciting and has something for anyone.

And then of course, St. Maarten’s most attractive aspect is our half French, half Dutch geography. St. Maarten is the smallest land mass in the world that is divided between two countries; France and Holland. We are Delightfully Dutch and Fantastically French! The French-Dutch border has a tall monument standing between the two nations. Its history might leave tourists asking themselves “How was this border decided?” Well, legend has it, a race was held to determine how much land the French and Dutch, could claim. As you would see on our map, the French won. This historical significance will fascinate tourists and will make them stay on the island. Our incredible island has a beach where planes land over your head, exhilarating activities, a natural pool that is breathtaking with its amazing features, and a historical monument that separates our country. This will unquestionably awe tourists enticing them to visit our captivating island. So come to St.Maarten and experience life! There are also hidden natural pools beyond the hills of Guana Bay, but the most popular one is Devil’s Cupper. As you hike on the Back Bay Trail, you can view the island at the very top where you can also have the smell of sea salt blowing across your face. This natural pool has sapphire water that shines as if there are thousands of diamonds. This beautiful feature leaves tourists speechless and entices them to stay longer.
