MESSAGE FROM THE FCCA
Michele M. Paige CEO, Florida-Caribbean Cruise AssociationMicky Arison
On behalf of Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association and our Member Lines, I welcome you to the FCCA Cruise Conference in the stunning Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic This event is poised to be pivotal in helping attendees foster relationships and understanding to improve their cruise tourism business, and we have seen that communication and collaboration are more important than ever By working together, we will continue to build back even better and sail to a brighter horizon for us all
So much of the current recovery for cruise lines and destinations has been due to this, and perhaps the silver lining of the unprecedented event shined a light on enhanced cooperation between all parties –many of which are represented here and continue to be committed to interacting with each other to propel business forward
This event will offer a boatload of these opportunities throughout the business sessions, including oneon-one meetings and workshops, and networking opportunities during social functions – all geared to put attendees in direct contact with cruise executives that decide where ships call, what sells on board and how to invest in destination products and infrastructure
Better yet, these executives will be on hand specifically to help attendees do more business with the cruise industry by addressing specific issues regarding the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Mexico; discussing facets of cruise tourism business like tours and infrastructure while forming invaluable business partnerships; and targeting other ways to foster mutual benefits between cruise lines and destinations, including employment and sourcing
Plus, the Dominican Republic is ready to showcase how it “has it all” through its hospitality, culture, authentic offerings, and some of what guests see and do in this sensational destination that already hosts a strong cruise tourism product, but also has numerous projects on the agenda to increase its cruise calls and homeporting
I encourage all to take full advantage of the opportunities available, as they are focused on accomplishing what we have seen is crucial – joining cruise executives, destinations and stakeholders to improve mutual understanding and success – while also mixing business with pleasure to build stronger relationships
In fact, part of that will be celebrating a momentous occasion, FCCA marking its 50th year of operations, and I cannot think of a better way to commemorate this achievement than by doing so with the people that made it possible
MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER OF TOURISM
It’s an honor for the Dominican Republic to be hosting the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) 2022, in Santo Domingo, the first city in the American continent, and to welcome all the executives of the FCCA member lines, delegates and participants to our country for this 28th edition
The Dominican Republic is in a highly lucrative position where it receives a large amount of trade, but it is mainly a destination that receives tourists by sea and air It has eight (8) international airports, five (5) cruise destinations, including six (6) ports and two (2) anchorages, a variety of marinas for boats and yachts, and domestic runways for private planes and charter flights This industry has a great impact in the tourism of our country, which is why we are very committed to work and create new alliances with cruise lines, preserving and increasing the number of passenger arrivals to our country During the seven (7) months of 2022, we have welcomed approximately 650,000 cruise ship passengers to the Dominican Republic, and we are looking forward to welcoming many more!
Our country is known for its variety of landscapes, from the sea to the mountains, valleys, dunes, and beautiful sand beaches, as well as for the hospitality and friendliness that characterize our people Currently, the country receives more than (6) million visitors a year, the highest number in the region, this reflects and commits the country even more to provide a better experience for visitors, transportation system, entertainment, historical preservation and culture, new tourist terminals and ports to attract new cruise ships and other maritime niches It also offers a list of entertainment and adventure activities as relaxing in one of our beautiful beaches, playing in one of the (26) golf courses, adrenaline activities, discovering coffee or cocoa plantations, cooling off in lagoons and water caves, exploring our diverse gastronomy Making our destination one of the best connected in the Caribbean due to the number of airports and ports
The Dominican Republic has it all As the Ministry of Tourism, we are committed to develop the cruise industry as part of our main actions and providing the tourist who visits us every day a better experience We are on our best disposal to showcase our diverse and beautiful country
Hope this conference will be very productive for everyone, that it meets all your expectations and you can enjoy what our country has to offer

LANDSCAPES
The Dominican Republic is known to have the most diverse topography for a single nation in the Caribbean region. You can go from a sandy beach to a cool, mountainous town over 500 meters (1,700 feet) above sea level in less than three hours. The country’s coastline is no secret–racking up over 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) in total, with hundreds of accessible, breathtaking beaches. More surprisingly, DR is flanked by a series of grand mountain ranges, the most important of which–the Cordillera Central–is home to the Caribbean’s highest peak: Pico Duarte, sitting at 3,087 meters (10,128 feet).
With 25% of the land consisting of protected
areas, most of which are easily accessed, there are a myriad of reasons to venture off the beach. Explore lush valleys, cloud forests, national parks on and offshore, rivers leading to waterfalls, offshore cayes where turtles nest, ancient Taino caves shrouded in thick rainforest, or pine forests with near zero temperatures. Discover natural wonders like Lago Enriquillo, a saltwater lake so large it surpasses the size of Manhattan, home to American crocodiles and sitting at 40 meters (138 feet) below sea level, the lowest point in the Caribbean.
It won’t take long to find your favorite Domini can landscape, after the beach.
OUR PEOPLE
Dominicans have a reputation for being among the friendliest people you’ll meet. They exude passion–in the way they speak a mile a minute, the way they dress, and dance, and in their embrace of their fellow human being, be it neighbor or visitor. Their explosive energy could be explained in their mélange of Taíno, African, and European roots. But to boot, European, Asian, and Middle Eastern communities have influenced and enriched the DR’ culture-scape since the 19th century, turning the population and culture into a fascinating melting pot. You’ll see our numerous influences showing up across regions in food, music, celebrations, and customs.
DOMINICANS TODAY
It won’t take you long to meet locals or notice the Dominican way of living. While modernism and globalization have modified the way of life in the big and small cities, Dominicans remain the same in their people-to-people interac tions. Courtesy and hospitality are core values, particularly in the countryside. Coming to the aid of visitors or a neighbor and sharing a plate of food are considered normal. Family is of the utmost importance, to be cared for and cheri shed. Head to the beach or to the river on the weekends, and you will see how Dominicans love to spend their free time with their loved ones, cooking outdoors and sharing jokes. Affectionate in words and action, romance runs in the Dominican’s blood. Life is to be shared and lived fully.
RELIGION
A majority of Dominicans are Roman Catholic, but there are also other Christian denominations, including Jehovah’s Witnesses and Evangelists. Various forms of syncretic religion, an African influence, are still practiced in the countryside. No matter what religion it is, Dominicans are a people of faith with a strong belief in God. You will hear references to that effect in their everyday language.
GASTRONOMY
There is a plethora of Dominican dishes, ranging from soups and stews to street side fried snacks, and sweet coconut desserts. Beyond the classic Caribbean rice and beans plate are staple specialties unique to the DR. Familiarize yourself with a few of the Dominican’s staples, from table to roadside, to best enjoy your culinary adventure around the country.
Dominicans love their street foods, particularly at night, and their frituras or fried snacks. One of the most commonly picks, particularly at night, is the chimichurri or “chimi”–a juicy Dominican version of a burger, filled with a combination of grilled, seasoned meat, cabbage, onions, and tomatoes, thrown inside toasted white bread, and smothered in mayonnaise and ketchup. It is served in a small plastic bag to catch the falling bits, which you must then empty out by hand. Pica pollo or double-fried chicken is among the most popular finds roadside, as is chicharrón de cerdo or fried pork rinds.
MUSIC
MUSIC
Dominicans are renowned for their dancing talents–you will spot them spontaneously twirling at the park, on their house veranda, or pretty much anywhere they hear their music. The DR’s sounds and instruments are influenced by West African, Spanish, and European roots. Two principal genres dominate and are synonymous with the Dominican Republic, here and around the world: merengue, and bachata. But there’s also son and a multitude of folkloric dance and music. Wherever you end up in the Dominican Republic, experiencing our music and our rhythms is as easy as stepping outside.
