From the Desk of ...

Welcome to a new year with Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

We are so excited to offer you many opportunities this year, and we hope you engage in all that interests you! The annual theme for this year is “Believe in Yourself.” We are proud that FCCLA is a safe place for all youth to grow, learn, and lead. I recently heard that a belief is a thought that you give conviction to, and then you turn the thought into a belief. If through your engagement in FCCLA you learn to turn your positive thoughts about yourself and your future into beliefs about yourself, we know you will grow your real world skills and leadership through FCCLA: The Ultimate Leadership Experience. Each year, we have the honor of meeting and working with amazing youth leaders like you who live and serve in communities all across our country.

We love hearing about your work and the positive impact you are having on others. I hope you reach new leadership heights! As you seek to believe in your own talents and gifts, you continue to invest in others. Your commitment and service are building a foundation for success not only for you but also for others in your family, career, and community. You are leaving an imprint everywhere you go – make sure it is a positive one! We hope to see you at conferences and see your accomplishments throughout this year. Let us know of your success, and let us know of your needs. We look forward to serving with you!

FCCLA Executive Director

Hello, FCCLA! I am beyond excited to be serving as your 2018-2019 FCCLA National President! It is such an honor to have the opportunity to lead this amazing organization, and I look forward to a great year. On behalf of the 2018-2019 National Executive Council, thank you for the confidence you have placed in us to move Family, Career and Community Leaders of America forward. Our theme for the year is “Believe in Yourself.” Each of you are leaders with great potential to accomplish great things. Take this year to dive into the opportunities FCCLA offers you as you lead others, strengthen your own skills, discover your career path, serve in your communities, and prepare for your future. I challenge you to share examples that illustrate how you believe in yourself and others. Please post your “un-believe-able” experiences and tag the NEC on social media. The National Executive Council would love to hear from you! I hope you consider participating in our national meetings this year, where you will have the opportunity to strengthen your leadership skills and share your FCCLA pride. Be your best you by carrying out a national program or Competitive Event project this year. Believe in the power of FCCLA to make the “unbelievable” believable memories. Believe that nothing is impossible when we work together. Believe in Yourself! Believe in FCCLA!

Why did you join FCCLA, and what has FCCLA done for you?

Why did you join FCCLA, and what has FCCLA done for you?

I joined FCCLA to help me get more involved in my community, and that’s exactly what I did. I became a part of many community service projects through my chapter that taught me how to communicate with others and become a leader. FCCLA has also taught me how to speak in front of crowds confidently and how to be a leader and a team player all at the same time.

Seeing the amount of excitement and innovative activities my peers were a part of gave me a bigger interest in joining this organization. I joined FCCLA when I was in middle school because many of my friends were members, and I hoped to develop skills that would drive me to become morally, educationally, and socially mature. FCCLA has done so much of what I hoped for and even more. It changed the person I was and made me want to better myself.

Why did you join FCCLA, and what has FCCLA done for you?

Why did you join FCCLA, and what has FCCLA done for you?

I joined FCCLA in the sixth grade, mainly because my older sister was already involved. At the time, I was very shy and lacked a lot of selfconfidence. Throughout my FCCLA journey, I learned how to speak up for myself and how to act in a professional manner. FCCLA also provided me with a passion and has prepared me to put my passion into action. Through involvement in FCCLA and by completing various competitions, I also discovered what I want my career pathway to be, something I didn’t even think about a few years ago.

FCCLA in my community is mainly known as a catering club, and when I was in the fourth grade, I helped out with a soup festival. Little did I know that the students who prepared the festival were FCCLA members. Ever since the fourth grade, I would encounter FCCLA members catering events or assisting at other community activities. Seeing the past members’ actions inspired me to participate in FCCLA and through my involvement, I found joy in cooking. Joining FCCLA has paved a path for me to pursue a career in the food industry.

Bella Cutruzzula

National Vice President of Community Service Age: 17 | Grade: 12 | State: OK Adviser: Brooke Kusch Random Fact: I’m both Italian and Vietnamese.

Why did you join FCCLA, and what has FCCLA done for you? I joined FCCLA because I got to see what an amazing time my older friends had in this organization. They shared with me all the leadership skills they gained, the friendships they made, and the places they traveled. I knew I had to join so I could have the same experiences and opportunities. The skills I have gained from FCCLA will not only help me in my life now, but also in my future. Without FCCLA, I would not be the person I am today, and I’m so thankful I made the choice to join the Ultimate Leadership Experience.

Why did you join FCCLA, and what has FCCLA done for you? I first joined FCCLA through a push from my adviser and a young, blind determination to become “successful,” but I soon realized that FCCLA provides more than just my definition of “success.” Over the past four years, FCCLA has taught me what it means to be a proper student, a community member, and, most importantly, a kind and optimistic leader. This organization has not only inspired my future career choice, but it has also given me the tools and steps I need to succeed. For that, I’ll be forever grateful.

Amitoj Kaur

National Vice President of Membership Age: 18 | Grade: 12 | State: OH Adviser: Ann Roberts Random Fact: I can speak 4 languages: Punjabi, Hindi, English, and some Spanish.

Why did you join FCCLA, and what has FCCLA done for you? Originally, I joined FCCLA because I immediately knew it would impress college officials and make me a better leader. Yet, the moment I walked into my first FCCLA event, I knew it was something beyond that. I felt an immediate sense of belonging, as if I had finally found my family. FCCLA has shown me my passions, has ignited a fire of service, and has bettered me as a leader, and for that, I am forever indebted to FCCLA.

Why did you join FCCLA, and what has FCCLA done for you?

Why did you join FCCLA, and what has FCCLA done for you?

I initially joined FCCLA because I wanted a community service organization on my college resume and because I wanted scholarships. However, over the past five years, FCCLA has developed me into a better leader, primarily through strengthening my communication and sociability skills. Ultimately, it has given me an opportunity to better myself and to create a vast network of contacts.

I joined FCCLA because all of my friends told me that they get to travel a lot and make new friends through the organization. Shortly after joining, I realized that FCCLA didn’t just give me travel opportunities and endless friendships, but it also gave me self-confidence and leadership skills that I will use for the rest of my life. Through FCCLA, I have been inspired to be a leader and to serve others selflessly, and that is something that I will continue to do for the rest of my life.

FCCLA Finance Report Tate and Tryon performed an audit over the financial statement of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), which is comprised of the balance sheet as of August 31, 2017, the related statement of activities and cash flows for the year then ended, and the related notes to the financial statement. This audit was performed in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America (GAAP). FCCLA received an unmodified opinion, which is the desired opinion, meaning that the financial statements are fairly presented and free of material misstatements. For the year ended August 31, 2017, FCCLA recorded a net surplus of $861,364, comprised of revenue and expenses of $5,413,951 and $4,552,587, respectively. Total assets increased by $927,607 to $4,875,551, led by a $1,505,466 increase in investments and offset by a $287,781 decrease in cash and cash equivalents, as compared to August 31, 2016. Liabilities increased by $66,580 to $380,976, led by a $115,915 increase in accounts payable, as compared to August 31, 2016. This increase was offset by a $53,085 decrease in deferred revenue, which represents funds received, but not yet earned, due to FCCLA not fulfilling their obligations at that point in time.

Meetings & Events

This fall, FCCLA members and advisers are invited to attend Capitol Leadership in Washington, D.C. During Capitol Leadership, students will receive training focusing on networking, professionalism, strategic planning, and advocacy around key teencentered current issues. Students will advocate for Family and Consumer Sciences and Career and Technical Education by showing policymakers how their support for education impacts teens in preparing to be college and career-ready.

Capitol Leadership Washington, D.C. October 8-10, 2018

An important aspect of Capitol Leadership features today’s teens meeting with their representatives to explain the importance of continued support for Family and Consumer Sciences education and address issues relevant to today’s teens. Capitol Leadership is the first of several large gatherings FCCLA will host throughout the 2018-2019 school year to provide similar opportunities to students around the nation.

“ Capitol Leadership is where I decided to take the next step in my leadership journey: being able to connect with members all over the nation and advocate for what we love the most, Career Technical Education and CTSO’s! I encourage every member to attend this event. Washington, D.C., is a magical city!” – Amitoj Kaur, National Vice President of Membership

“ Just like every great recipe starts with simple ingredients, every great leader starts with simple beginnings. Capitol Leadership is an essential ingredient to beginning the Ultimate Leadership Experience recipe.” – Rafael Bitanga, National Vice President of Development

Career Pathways: Your Connection to Careers

Applied academic skills. Critical thinking skills. Resource management. Systems thinking. Why are these topics important? What do they have to do with FCCLA? And how do they apply to your future career? Through a survey of business and industry stakeholders, FCCLA has concluded that we most closely align to these career pathways: Hospitality and Tourism, Education and Training, Visual Arts and Design, and Human Services. FCCLA’s national programs and Competitive Events work together with what members learn in their Family and Consumer Sciences courses, and it all adds up to real world skills that help you to be collegeand career-ready. Let’s take a peek at how two members could use the opportunities available in FCCLA to help them develop the real world skills they need for a future of success!

A Bed and Breakfast Boost

Meet Kendra. Ever since she was a little girl, Kendra has been interested in running her own bed and breakfast. In fact, her uncle owns a bed and breakfast, and Kendra helps there sometimes on the weekends. But Kendra would like to learn more about what it really takes to run a bed and breakfast, so she decides to participate in the Entrepreneurship STAR Event. Through this event, Kendra does a lot of research about how a successful business is run, including topics such as income, expenses, marketing, customer service, personnel, and more. She creates a business plan to focus on what a business needs in today’s economy and what best practices need to be in place to really make a business thrive. Through her research, Kendra discovers that her uncle’s bed and breakfast could use some help when it comes to marketing. It’s a “best-kept secret” in their community and gets high reviews from people who stay, but not many people know about it. As part of her Entrepreneurship STAR Event, Kendra creates a small marketing campaign for the bed and breakfast. She designs a logo and creates a website. She also makes an online newsletter to distribute. Kendra shares her plans with her uncle, who then applies those ideas to his existing business. Her uncle has already reported an increase in stays! Through this experience, which real world skills has Kendra developed? Doing research has her using applied academic skills, and she developed critical thinking skills when she decided what to do to help the bed and breakfast. She also learned a lot about resource management, laws and regulations, and information use. Then she put her communication skills to the test when she created her marketing campaign. Nice work, Kendra!

Feature Story

Lounging at Lunch Meet Andrew. Andrew has an eye for making interior spaces welcoming and cozy, and his friends often mention to him that he should think about a career in visual arts or design someday. As part of his Interior Design course, Andrew is learning about what it really takes to have a career in the visual arts and design industry. One day while standing in line for lunch, he notices a space right outside his school’s lunchroom that isn’t used well. It’s pretty dingy, and no one wants to be there. Andrew asks his principal if he could have the opportunity to help the school make use of the space as a place where students could eat lunch in a comfortable setting. His principal gives the green light, but Andrew must stick within a certain budget. He researches possible interior designs, selects one that he thinks will work best in the space, does some painting, and rearranges furniture. He also brings in some new pieces for the space and evaluates his work using interior design principles. Then he sits back and enjoys an improved space while eating lunch with his friends. Because of this experience, his FCS teacher and FCCLA adviser suggest he compete in the Interior Design STAR Event. Through this experience, which real world skills has Andrew developed? He had to use applied academic skills in math to figure out how to best position the furniture, and critical thinking skills when organizing and planning the room. Andrew had to make that money stretch, so he used resource management skills to ensure he made smart purchases. To start the whole project, he used systems thinking. Way to go, Andrew!

Now it’s your turn! Pick a career pathway, an FCCLA opportunity related to that career pathway, and a way that an FCCLA member could develop real world skills. Career Pathway

Top 5 Ways to Celebrate FCCLA Week

Plan to Make FCCLA Week the Best One Ever! MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11

Make A Plan Planning an event may seem like a lot of work, but FCCLA has made preparing for the 2019 FCCLA Week easier than ever by providing a daily theme for chapters to follow. Check out the themes to the right and work with your chapter to create a list of ideas to implement in your community each day. Don’t wait too long to make your plan! You’ll need time to prepare and carry out the rest of the items in our top five list.

Connect with Other FCCLA Chapters Want to make a big splash? Try connecting with other local FCCLA chapters to double up on your FCCLA Week efforts! Don’t have any chapters nearby? Look regionally, state-wide, or even nationally to find other chapters. Reach out to your state officers to find out how to get connected with other chapters.

Invite People Do your research and identify local leaders, business owners, community representatives, and policymakers who may be interested in your efforts. Create personalized invitations for your FCCLA Week events and try to hand deliver them if possible. Make sure to include a schedule of events so VIPs know what time to come, and be prepared for who will greet them and what you will have them do at the event if they do attend.

Be Spirited Kick off FCCLA week by encouraging your classmates to Go For the Red! Show your FCCLA spirit and promote FCCLA in your community.

#FCCLAspirit

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12 Be Confident Be confident in your abilities to succeed. Share how FCCLA has prepared you for a successful future and how it has encouraged you to believe in yourself.

Create Buzz before FCCLA Week

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14

Once you have a plan in place, promote it! Use social media, flyers, and personal invitations to let students at your school know about the events. Network with other clubs at your school and invite them to help. Tag supporting businesses and community members on social media and let them know how excited you are to work with them. Don’t forget to create a press release about your event to get local media involved!

Be a Friend Take the time to show your appreciation for those who have supported you throughout your FCCLA journey and have encouraged you to believe in yourself. Be a friend and encourage others to do the same.

Thank Your Supporters One of the best ways you can earn continued support is to thank community members for the work they’ve done. Send thank you cards to the VIPs you invited, even if they did not attend. Report back on the success of your event and include a save-the-date for next year’s FCCLA Week. Thank your school administration, parents, teachers, and other students who helped you, and, most importantly, thank your fellow FCCLA members for a job well done!

#BeTheFirst Tobacco-Free Generation

Opportunities & Awards

Take action to #BeTheFirst tobacco-free generation with FCCLA and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids! This fall, FCCLA and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK) are encouraging chapters across the nation to get involved in life-saving advocacy as we work together to Take Down Tobacco and #BeTheFirst tobacco-free generation! The trainings and resources offered by CTFK help you understand the dangers of tobacco use and other products such as e-cigarettes and JUUL, and how your voice can help create the first tobacco-free generation. Why get involved? In the US, tobacco use kills more than 480,000 people every year – more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined. As part of FCCLA’s Student Body national program, we are partnering with CTFK to help reduce tobacco’s deadly toll. CTFK advocates for public policies proven to prevent kids from smoking, to help smokers quit, and to protect everyone from secondhand smoke. YOU can play an important role in the fight against tobacco and its harmful effects. Ready to take action? Begin by completing Taking Down Tobacco 101 to get all the facts you need to advocate against the dangers of tobacco. Next, use the Become a Trainer courses to learn how to lead your own Taking Down Tobacco 101 training in your school or community. If you are one of the first 100 chapters to report details about your training through the online post-training survey, your chapter will win $100! You don’t want to stop there! FCCLA chapters that host a training for at least 75 youth can enter to win one of three $1,000 cash prizes. Contest dates: August 6, 2018 - December 15, 2018

Don’t miss your chance to take action to #BeTheFirst Tobacco-Free Generation. For more information, visit http://fcclainc.org/programs/taking-down-tobacco.php.

IMPACT Fund Overview

Opportunities & Awards

By Julia Peake, National Vice President of Finance Do YOU want to do something that will make an impact on members across our nation? Last year, FCCLA’s IMPACT Fund was able to touch the lives of thousands of members from South Dakota to Puerto Rico. After multiple natural disasters hit across America, many chapters were in need of our help rebuilding and serving their communities. Some students lost their homes and many of their belongings, and some schools lost funding for their Family and Consumer Sciences programs. Because of the generous donations received, the National Executive Council was able donate over $25,000 to chapters in need. This included 43 chapters in Texas, Florida, Montana, Idaho, South Dakota, Indiana, Georgia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Because of the support of many, students were able to pay their dues, attend state and national conferences, purchase professional attire, compete in STAR Events, and provide help for their communities. You can be a part of that impact this year! The IMPACT Fund exists to move FCCLA forward by providing opportunities for our members to take action in their communities in order to leave a legacy that exemplifies our mission and purposes. Donations made to the IMPACT Fund will be used to directly support members as they learn, grow, and achieve through their participation in FCCLA. To donate, visit: fcclainc.org/funding.php.

State-Level Recognition for Student Traffic Safety Projects During the 2018-2019 school year, chapters have the opportunity to win a $500 FACTS award in every state! Thanks to FCCLA’s partnership with Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford DSFL) and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), this partnership provides opportunities for FCCLA members to connect directly with GHSA representatives in their state through participation in FCCLA’s Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety (FACTS) national program. This exciting peer education program engages youth on personal, vehicle, and road safety. Did you know that traffic crashes are the number one cause of teenage deaths each year in the United States? It’s critical that we give young drivers the skills they need to stay safe on the road, and FCCLA’s FACTS program offers a unique opportunity to do just that. By participating in a FACTS project, your chapter has the opportunity to educate your peers about the realities of traffic safety and what can be done to prevent traffic crashes. Through FCCLA’s FACTS program, teens use peer education to take the driver seat on change!
