COAST America’s Great Paintout
The Vision
Capturing and Preserving Florida’s Forgotten Coast through the Plein Air Tradition Welcome to The Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s Great Paint-out! Our 10-day festival is among the world’s most prestigious of plein air events. Now in the 13th year, The Forgotten Coast en Plein Air documents the landscape and culture of the last vestige of authentic “Old Florida.”
The Forgotten Coast on Canvas
Our festival emphasizes artistic excellence and the production of investment-quality paintings. But there’s another mission: To capture the soul of the region. “With plein air events popping up all over the country, we realize the importance of focusing on quality and relevance,” says Event Chair Joe Taylor. Our event focuses as much on the artists and art as it does on depicting the landscape, cultural, architecture, and life of this special place on Florida’s coast.
Paintings That Tell Stories
Take a drive along The Forgotten Coast and you’ll see a wild mixture of coasts and forests, people and places, and businesses and homes. “We’ve developed a three-year painting program that captures not only why plein air painting is important, but how the process and the paintings contribute to a region’s resilience,” says Taylor. In short, the plein air paintings capture all the aspects of life, past and present that makes this region so extraordinary.
In 2016 we focused on habitat preservation and environmental stewardship, examining land use, conservation, and management as well as aquaculture challenges such as oyster reef restoration. In 2017, we focused on the region’s rich local culture and heritage with an emphasis on people, places, and stories that inform the plein air paintings.
But most of all, become a collector. There’s no better way to support the artists and the region than to buy paintings. While the artwork represents a mix of subject matter and styles, all paintings offer a true sense of place and your own meaningful slice of the beautiful Forgotten Coast.
This year, in 2018, we will celebrate the built environment, the human-made spaces where people live and work. This program and its paintings will showcase architecture, streetscapes, working waterfronts, and historic sites.
The Artists, the Events, and You
This invitation-only event features 20 internationally acclaimed artists, who come from around the globe. In addition, six “Florida’s Finest en Plein Air” artists (honored as Plein Air Ambassadors) will have their art available as well as teach classes. We urge you to interact with the painters; they love the attention! Attend the quickdraw event, the nocturne paints, lectures, lunches, receptions, collection exhibits, and Collector’s Gala to see all of the plein air paintings, and learn more about the artists, their painting styles and mediums. And take one-on-one classes with an artist ambassador to discover the intricacies of plein air painting yourself.

Honoring Event Founder
Richard Carrell
History, Organization and Purpose Paintings, relationship-building and more The Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition is a 501c3 organization whose primary activity is organizing the annual Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s Paint Out, each May. This event enhances the vitality of the local communities along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. From Mexico Beach to Alligator Point, the event depicts the natural beauty and unique culture of the Forgotten Coast.
Like many great projects, the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air started with a simple idea— inviting artists to capture the culture and beauty of the people and places of this amazing coastline. It was in 2004 when Richard Carrell first introduced the idea of a plein air event that eventually launched in 2006. Sadly, Richard only lived to see four years of plein air events, which has since grown to become one of the leading plein air events in the country. We continue to honor Richard and his wife Julia and their family for their commitment and passion.
Forgotten Coast en Plein Air also allows local residents and visitors a rare opportunity—to actively engage, as volunteers and art lovers, with nationally known plein air artists from around the world.
Giving Back To Our Communities
In turn, the plein air artists donate a percentage of each painting sale to benefit arts education for the communities of the Forgotten Coast. The Forgotten Coast Coalition also provided the permanent Richard Carrell Plein Air Collection to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf as well as grants for arts initiatives to many area partners.
Proceeds from Forgotten Coast en Plein Air support the mission of the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition. By organizing cultural activities, the coalition enhances the vitality of local communities along Florida’s Forgotten Coast from Mexico Beach to Alligator Point. By supporting this event you:
• Document regional history and culture • Highlight the preservation and awareness of Florida’s natural resources • Enrich the quality of life for residents by encouraging regional cultural events • Build community by empowering local non-profit organizations to be partners • Reach out to a broad-based, multi-community, multigenerational audience

Invited Artists Years of training, dedication to their craft and an acute eye for composition enables the twenty invited artists to produce fine quality art in the plein air tradition. Gathering from across the globe, these artists will paint for 10 days to capture the natural beauty, character and local culture of the last vestige of Old Florida. Forgotten Coast en Plein Air welcomes these artists and invites you to experience the magic of this annual event and take the opportunity to own a piece of Florida’s Forgotten Coast on canvas.
BRIENNE M. BROWN Julian, Pennsylvania “I find beauty in everyday life, the so called ‘mundane.’ Ordinary people going about their everyday lives inspire me. I enjoy painting en plein air, where each painting reminds me of where I was, of the experiences I had, the sounds, smells, and the people I met.” Much to her mother’s indignation, Brienne owned little clothing that was not covered in paint. From a very young age, Brienne showed talent in art and music, but wanted to pursue a career in the sciences. After graduating with a Master’s degree in Chemistry, she soon found that art was more than a hobby. After leaving her job as a toxicologist to raise her first child, Brienne had the opportunity to paint more. Brienne holds signature membership in several watercolor societies, including the National Watercolor Society. Brown’s work can be seen in Splash 17, PleinAir Magazine, and Watercolor Artist Magazine. www.briennembrown.com
LUKE BUCK Nineveh, Indiana “I am in awe of this life and this world. It is overwhelming. It’s obviously a miracle. This is God’s creation and his gift to us. No artist can come close to duplicating the beauty or even the feeling we may have as we behold the scene before us, but it is enjoyable to attempt to convey to others with our painting and share our own insights, or to capture the moment of our own feelings and appreciation of what we are experiencing.” Luke Buck grew up in Indiana with a love for life, art, and nature that is evident in his nostalgic paintings of American landscapes and wildlife. Earning a scholarship, Luke studied figure drawing at the John Heron Art Institute. However, most of Luke’s art education and influence came from his artist father, Harold Buck, with whom he shared a studio with for many years. Buck’s talents have won him numerous honors and awards through the years and his work has been exhibited in many major juried and invitational art shows, including museum, gallery, and solo shows throughout North America. www.lukebuckart.com 6

Invited Artists KEN DEWAARD Hope, Maine For Ken there is nothing more rewarding and challenging than painting under an open sky, surrounded by the scents and sounds of nature and ever-changing color and harmonies to excite one’s creativity. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts with honors, Ken began working in a commercial art studio in Chicago. He continued his studies at the American Academy of Art, where he studied with nationally recognized watercolorist, Irving Shapiro. Upon Irving’s recommendation Ken joined the acclaimed Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art in Chicago, where he soon began studying with Scott Burdick as well as Dan Gerhartz. It is here that Ken adapted his direct and pure approach as well as his bravura brush style, which he achieves by painting directly from life. He has won numerous awards around the country in many of the top Plein Air Competitions. www.kendewaard.com
CHARLES DICKINSON St. Augustine, Florida “I find the world in all of its variety an endless source of inspiration. I use rich color, strong compositions, and solid drawings as the foundation of my paintings to capture what I see and feel. My goal is to create lasting works that express the spirit and beauty of nature.” Charles Dickinson began drawing in early childhood. Later he received four years of formal training at the Paier School of Art in Hamden, Connecticut, and earned a scholarship at Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Old Lyme, Connecticut where he studied painting and sculpture. He has since dedicated his life to the study of painting and has been a full-time plein air artist for the last forty years. Dickinson is an award-winning artist and his work is collected internationally. For sixteen years, He is inspired by the challenges of painting new landscapes with limited time and the opportunity to paint alongside his peers. www.charlesdickinson.net
MARK FEHLMAN San Diego, California “I love to paint from the life that surrounds me. I paint in an impressionistic style, marked by energetic brushwork, and use thick and thin layers of paint, patterns of light and dark, and a rich palette of colors to capture the moment.” Mark Fehlman practiced as an architect for 35 years, as the design partner for the San Diego based firm, Fehlman LaBarre. Mark started painting in 2000 and within five years left architecture to start a new career as an artist. He trained under many great artists, but the two who were most influential were Ray Roberts and John Asaro. Like both artists, Mark is equally comfortable in figurative and landscape subjects that feature strong composition, well defined value relationships and vibrant color. He has won numerous awards in various shows, including the “Grand Award” for the LPAPA 2014 Best of Plein Air, First Place in the Borrego Springs Plein Air Festival, as well as many other awards. www.markfehlman.com 800/378-8419

Invited Artists KATHLEEN B. HUDSON Lexington, KY “When I envision a new painting, I focus on points of shifting light and atmosphere in the scene. To me, these are the source of a landscape’s beauty: the things that make us stop and look before continuing on our way.” Kathleen B. Hudson is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and an Artist Member of the Copley Society of Art in Boston, MA. In 2017, Hudson received the Grand Prize in the 6th Annual Plein Air Salon for her painting Bright Morning, Timberline Falls, which was featured on the July 2017 cover of PleinAir Magazine. Hudson now undertakes several national juried competitions each year, and when she’s not outside painting from life, you can find her in the studio creating larger scale landscapes that emphasize the dynamic interplay of light, shadow, and atmospherics. www.kathleenbhudson.com
CHARLIE HUNTER Bellows Falls, Vermont “My goal is to paint beautifully that which is not traditionally considered beautiful. Sorta like a less-grotesque Anselm Keifer in a better mood. Thanks for looking.” Charlie Hunter was raised in the house built by his great great, great grandfather, majored in art at Yale University, and spent the early part of his career as a graphic designer. He has won numerous awards for his distinctive, near-monochromatic work in water-miscible oil. Hunter has said, “My goal is to paint beautifully that which is not traditionally considered beautiful,” to which Richard Schmid in Alla Prima II responds “If it is within the realm of human evolution to allow one individual to possess the gift of a natural sense of design then Charlie Hunter is certainly the lucky winner.” Curiously, his cats remain unimpressed. www.CharlieHunter.art
DEBRA HUSE Costa Mesa, California “Artist Debra Huse takes a loving look at the quintessential California lifestyle: the beaches, boats, gardens, and people, all partaking of the “good life” in the Golden State. An astute observer of everyday life, Debra presents her subjects immersed in the unique light and warmth of coastal Southern California. A true “plein air” painter, her paintings are direct and honest views of what is all around her.” -Mr. Jean Stern, Art Historian, Author and Lecturer Debra Huse uses rich color and bold fluid strokes to capture the light and drama in her oil paintings. Originally from Indiana, Huse lives in Costa Mesa, CA and has a studio in a boatyard. She has a passion for painting coastal scenes and old fishing boats. Huse is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, the American Society of Marine Artists & Laguna Plein Air Painters. www.debrahuse.com

Invited Artists SHELBY KEEFE Milwaukee, Wisconsin “I am passionate about drawing and depicting my subjects with honesty as well as expressiveness. My goal is to create a fresh perspective to the recognizable world without being predictable or mundane. Being comfortable at rendering in oil paint, I enjoy tackling complex subjects from cityscapes to the figure in the ala prima method of wet on wet.” Shelby Keefe is an award-winning impressionist painter, teacher and performance artist. Utilizing a vibrant underpainting technique of complimentary colors, her oil paintings are complex, but not overly-worked. With a BFA in 1981 and a career in graphic design, she became a full-time fine artist in 2005 painting, teaching and competing nationwide and working in her studio/gallery. She has collectors all over the country in corporate, museum and public collections. www.studioshelby.com
THOMAS JEFFERSON KITTS Portland, Oregon “When people view my efforts, I want them to see a painting, not a photograph. I want them to experience a surface made alive with color, texture, and the movement of my hand, yet also feel tethered to the reality that gave birth to the work. Up close, I want my surfaces to explode. But most of all, I want my audience to appreciate why I prefer to paint from life—and thus discover our common sense of wonder.” Thomas is both inspired and exhilarated by the way light plays across the landscape and he has devoted most of his life to capturing it in oil. He prefers to work directly from life for its honesty and immediacy, incorporating many alla prima techniques developed by 19th century master painters such as Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn. Thomas has been been featured in several issues of PleinAir Magazine and named as an Artist to Watch by The Informed Collector. www.thomaskitts.com
JOHN P. LASATER IV Siloam Springs, Arkansas “I make simple visual statements with my artwork, regardless of the subject matter. Simplicity is peaceful, and reinforces the blessing of our existence. Through the medium of oil paint, I have a language for my gratitude.” John P. Lasater IV developed a love for art working as a designer and illustrator for Hallmark Cards. His honors include top awards in national plein air invitationals (Maui Plein Air, Door County Plein Air, Easels in Fredrick, Sedona Plein Air, Plein Air Rockies, Telluride Plein Air, Plein Air Southwest), signature memberships in Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and Outdoor Painters Society, an award of excellence from the Oil Painters of America national exhibition, and feature articles in Southwest Art and PleinAir Magazine. He also served as a speaker and demonstrator for the 2015 Plein Air Convention and the 2016/17 Plein Air South Conventions. www.lasaterart.com 800/378-8419

VICKI NORMAN Bridgnorth, Shropshire, UK “I just love paint. And I love to travel. And to teach other people to paint. That’s it really.” Born in Hertfordshire, England, Vicki Norman received her BA Hons in Fine Art in 2000 and has been painting and teaching professionally ever since. Travelling worldwide, she creates studies in oil that capture a sense of place through color and light. Vicki’s paintings have won awards in the UK and Ireland where she is a regular contributor to plein air events and competitions. Achievements in 2017 included ‘Best Painting in Show’ at Bermuda Plein Air and exhibiting with the Royal Society of Painters in Oils at London’s Mall Galleries. www.vickinormanstudio.com
MORGAN SAMUEL PRICE Altamonte Springs, FL Morgan sees light as a tool to explore the visual pleasure of the movement over the objects. Capturing that movement sets the time of day. Retaining that choice of actual time creates the plausible illusion. The painting is never about the subject; it is about the physical sensation of temperature. At age 15, Morgan knew enough about painting to learn Sumi brush strokes. Even at 15, Morgan had the mindfulness to view her own practice and go learn specific skills to improve. No technical issue was going to hold Morgan back. Now, decades later, Morgan Samuel Price has technical skills few painters ever possess. Many artists teach but not all see teaching itself as an art. Morgan did. Morgan learned to explain a single concept many ways. She tuned into how different people hear information. She has produced over 14 DVD’s and numerous on-line Video Educational Products. Morgan has exhibited in 60-plus National Exhibitions, Plein Air Invitational Events throughout the country and numerous solo gallery exhibitions. www.morgansamuelprice.com 10

Invited Artists JAMES RICHARDS Tucker, Georgia “My goal in painting is to give a glimpse of the beauty in the ordinary everyday objects and places passed by daily without recognition.” James Richards is an American Impressionist painter who specializes in oils. He was born and raised in rural Georgia and spent the days of his youth exploring the farms, fields and forests of his hometown. James has spent years studying the nuances of paint and developing a keen sense of understanding and control over the medium. He is now regarded as one of the top oil painters and instructors in the country. He considers teaching and sharing his knowledge to be his primary purpose and true calling as an artist. He has recently lent his teaching talents to Paula Deen and President Jimmy Carter. www.jrichardsstudio.com
RAY ROBERTS Angela Camp, California Award-winning artist, Ray Roberts, was born in 1954 and grew up in an Orange County, California with orange groves, before the days of freeways and sprawling housing developments. It has given him an enduring affection for the untamed, undeveloped California of his youth. In 1969, after the early death of his father and mother’s ill-health, Ray was sent to Orme School in the Arizona desert. Its strong fine arts program helped Ray to discover his artistic talent. Like many successful artists before him, Ray first pursued a career as an illustrator. He got up the courage to switch to fine art in 1992 and has never looked back. Ray currently teaches figure and landscape workshops with Plein Air Liaison in Petaluma, California, as well as several other locations across the country and abroad. Ray and Peggi now live on a 20-acre ranch in Angels Camp, an old California gold rush town, surrounded by the oak-studded hills. www.krollroberts.com/ray-roberts-portfolio
TONY ROBINSON Wexford, Ireland
“I enjoy working in new places, new landscapes and the challenges and surprises they bring.” Forgotten Coast 2018 is Tony Robinson’s second plein air event in the United States, having won an award for his painting of Chesapeake Bay at ‘Paint Annapolis’ in 2017. Originally from the north-east of England, Tony has lived in Ireland for most of his life. He worked as a teacher, signwriter, mural painter, artist-in-the-community, picture framer and gallerist. In the last 15 years has he sought to exhibit and gain recognition and in that time, he has won plein air events worldwide. “Working from life is important to me. Whether painting the figure or a plein air landscape, it is what I find inspiring. I aim for an authentic atmosphere but I also try to leave the door ajar for the paint to take over and surprise me. It doesn’t always turn out like that but sometimes it does—and then it is worth the risk. I remind myself, it is only paint!” www.tonyrobinsonart.com 800/378-8419

Plein Air 2018 Florida’s Finest Ambassadors Meet and paint with the pros and take home a painting SHAWN ESCOTT Boca Raton, Florida “From capturing sunrises and sunsets, to painting the light of a fleeting moment, Shawn enjoys chasing the effect of nature’s brilliance.” Attention to detail and painterly strokes make the plein air paintings of Shawn Escott uniquely his own. His major influences are the American Impressionists, Plein Air Painters of America and many contemporary artists working today. Shawn studied for a short time at the Lyme Academy of Art but is mostly self taught. His work has been shown at Sotheby’s International Realty, the Boca Raton Museum All Florida Exhibition, The Boca Raton Museum of Art School, The Boca Raton Historical Society and others. CHRIS KLING Port Charlotte, Florida “Being an artist is not just my career. It is an integral part of who I am and is something that I am compelled to do. My work reflects my interest in boats, water, nature, and the human figure. I work in oil, primarily in a traditional manner but with a contemporary flair through color, composition, value, and application of paint. Color sings to me and I try to use its harmony to evoke an emotional connection with others.” Chris Kling has worked as a professional artist since 1978 and has received numerous awards and commissions for her landscapes and portraiture throughout the US and with the Portrait Society of America. She teaches Plein Air and Oil Portraiture and has a studio in Kling Gallery, Wine & Decor in Stuart, FL. www.chrisklingartist.com

Florida’s Finest Ambassadors JEFF RIPPLE Micanopy, Florida “I am dedicated to a poetic realism in landscape painting. For me, that is the artistic combination of an accurate depiction of a scene infused by my emotional response to the light and atmosphere on that landscape. Such a painting may or may not be of a precise location or moment in time, but it is always believable and true to place.” Jeff Ripple’s oil paintings in the field and studio are inspired by intriguing compositions, mood and atmosphere in the landscape. His style involves carefully planned drawings, a reliance on sketches and studies painted in nature to inform studio work, and a treatment of light and atmosphere reminiscent of 19th Century artists working in the uniquely American Hudson River School and Luminist traditions. Jeff is a self-trained artist who relies on rigorous daily practice in drawing and painting as part of his process. www.jeffrippleart.com
ROBERT J. SIMONE St. Petersburg, Florida “For me painting is a prolonged meditation on the beauty of nature. Such beauty invites us to participate in it’s splendor. It calls us to higher heights and beacons us to consider the mysteries of life.” Robert J. Simone is a nationally recognized artist who has received awards in such prestigious events as Plein Air Easton, Lighthouse Plein Air, Plein Air Richmond and Cape Ann Plein Air. He holds Signature Member status in the American Society of Marine Artists and has exhibited in OPA’s Eastern Regional. www.robertjsimone.com
RUTH SQUITIERI Port Orange, Florida “When I paint on location, I want to convey the mood and sunshine that I felt at that moment. The best compliment is when a viewer tells me they can put themselves into the scene and feel the warmth of the sun and enjoy it with me.” Ruth was born and raised in Germany where art has featured prominently for her, although her whole family was more musically inclined. After moving to Florida in the early 1990s, she expanded her knowledge about art via books and self-study, and discovered plein air painting in 2006. Since then she has taken her brushes and paints on location and has depicted alleyways, boats and palm trees in glorious Florida sunshine. In addition to loving the outdoors and eager to chat, encourage and advise passers-by, Ruth has taken on a permanent instructor’s position at her local art association in New Smyrna Beach, teaching everything from the basics of sketching to composition and perspective to plein air painting. On top of that Ruth is an active blogger, writing bilingual posts about her own art. www.paintingsbyruth.com 800/378-8419

Residency Exhibits and Presentations Documenting the culture of the Forgotten Coast through art Every year the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air selects several artists to document aspects of the region’s cultural, architectural, and environmental heritage. These residencies have become an important part of our local outreach and result in an impressive portfolio of work.
“Shrimpers” Residency Exhibit
Highlighting the work of Morgan Samuel Price Examine the subject of shrimpers through the eyes of Morgan Samuel Price. Her residency explores the work, people and environment of the shrimping community on the Forgotten Coast. Exhibit Dates May 4-11: Port Inn, 501 Monument Avenue (on Highway 98), Port St. Joe. Special Presentation, May 4: Morgan discusses the people, vessels, and stories of the shrimping industry. 6:30 pm, Port Inn, 501 Monument Avenue (on Highway 98), Port St. Joe.
“Ripples” Boat Builders Residency Exhibit Highlighting the work of John P. Lasater, IV
As the fishing and oystering business has dried up along the Forgotten Coast, so has the need for new boats. Former apprentices have given up the trade to take work elsewhere. Fortunately, John P. Lasater, IV tracked down two boat builders and spent a week’s residency painting the work and faces of the boat builders still plying their craft in the area, including Luther Hatfield of Eastpoint and Fred Buskins of Port St. Joe. Exhibit Dates May 4-11: Eastpoint Visitors Center, 731 Highway 98, Eastpoint. Special Presentation, May 8: John’s residency documents two boat builders, one current and one retired, and their work in what was once a key industry along the Forgotten Coast. 6:30 pm, Eastpoint Visitor’s Center, 730 Highway 98, Eastpoint.
“Built on Faith” Residency Exhibit Highlighting the work of James Richards
Churches have long played an important (and prolific) role in the Forgotten Coast community, showing evidence of the many faiths that built this part of old Florida. Some neighborhoods seem to offer a church on every block. James Richards spent a week capturing these structures for his residency. Exhibit Dates May 4-11: Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, 140 West 1st Street, St. George Island, FL Special Presentation, May 9: James discusses the culture and stories of the region as they relate to faith and churches, evidence of faith in the built environment. 6:30 pm, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, 140 West 1st Street, St. George Island.

Their paintings have been an annual catalyst for discussions and education about life here on the Forgotten Coast. The selected artists spend time in advance of the event to study and capture the culture of the region. Below is a snapshot of the residencies that have occurred to date. Area Culture and Beauty Presented in Regional Exhibits The Wet Room: Art Fresh Off the Easel A unique feature to the Forgotten Coast event is a fully functioning Wet Room which sells paintings as quickly as the artists deliver them to the check in station. The paintings are literally “wet” as they are often completed just hours before arrival. The Wet Room features the work of all 20 invited artists. The paintings change by the hour and often art collectors arrive daily to make their selections from the most recent deliveries. Collectors from across the country watch the online gallery where each painting is photographed and posted immediately to the website. If you cannot attend in person, you may view the paintings online. A painting can be selected and easily processed over the telephone. For the cost of shipping, the painting will be delivered to your door. Simply call 800-378-8419. Visit the Wet Room for art sales and information, The Joe Center for the Arts, 201 Reid Avenue. The exhibit will highlight the work of the Florida’s Finest Ambassadors, a special presentation of paintings submitted by Florida’s plein air artists juried by Morgan Samuel Price. The work is available for viewing and purchase at the Apalachicola Center for History, Culture and Art, 86 Water Street. Open 11 am-5 pm daily.
Masters’ Gallery: Inspired Paintings
Hosted this year at The Joe Center for the Arts, invited artists display their finest studio work, inspired by plein air studies from the Forgotten Coast event. All works are available for viewing and purchase. Visit the Masters’ Gallery for information and sales at The Joe Center for the Arts, 201 Reid Avenue, Port St. Joe. Open 11 am-5 pm daily.
Quickdraw Exhibit: The Best of the 2018 Quickdraw Competition A selection of the best paintings from the 2018 Quickdraw
competition will be selected to hang as a tribute to the “two hour challenge.” Many times some of the most spontaneous and creative pieces result from the competitive process. The exhibit may be viewed and purchased at the Apalachicola Center for History, Culture and Art, 86 Water Street. Open11am-5 pm daily.
Artists’ Choice Collection: Invited Artists Select the Best of the Best Each year at the “Collectors’ Gala,” the invited artists select what they consider
the “best” painting of the 10-day event. The Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition purchases that painting and adds it to a growing collection. The exhibit can be viewed at the Rio Carrabelle Gallery, 102 St. James Avenue, Carrabelle. Open11 am-5 pm daily.
Founder’s Collection: An Artists’ Tribute
In 2010 a special collection of plein air work was donated by the invited artists to honor the event’s founder, Richard Carrell. The exhibit can be seen at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf, 3801 East Highway 98, Port St. Joe. Open 11 am-5 pm daily.

The Legacy of Art
Student Art Day Watch talent take root and bloom
Nothing is more exciting and satisfying than watching talent take root and blossom at an early age. That’s why we consider Student Art Day to be one of jewels in the crown of the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air event. Started in 2007, Student Art Day has become one of the most popular events. Join us at The Mill Pond
This year you can join our featured artists at the historic and picturesque Mill Pond in Apalachicola as they help mentor local students from Gulf and Franklin county schools. Each artist will work side-by-side with a student to help create a plein air piece of art. The students will sign their paintings and volunteers will frame them
800/378-8419
onsite. Artists, students, teachers, and volunteers will then gather for a noon lunch to celebrate the day’s accomplishments.
Join us at the Wet Room
In the afternoon, the student paintings will be hung in the Wet Room at The Joe in Port St. Joe for the duration of the event. Please join us for activities celebrating this wonderful tradition of student and professional collaboration. And, if you happen to miss Student Art Day, be sure to stop by the Wet Room and see their paintings up close.
Former Student Art Day participant becomes teacher
“I was in 9th grade when I participated in Student Art Day and loved every minute of it. It was my first time painting with oils and because art has influenced my life so much, I eventually became an art teacher at an after school/summer program called Project Impact. Later I became an art teacher at the Apalachicola Bay Charter School. Now, I have a full time classroom to myself and I make sure to teach my kids to see the beauty in the world and people. I believe that’s the start of igniting their creativity.” ~ Joy Carrino

2018 Plein Air South Keynote Speaker Roger Dale Brown “To capture the essence of the scene, making the viewer feel they can step into a different day, understanding the mood, and beauty of that day is my goal.” Originally from Nashville, Roger now resides in Franklin Tennessee. Avid about traveling he is compelled to explore regions and subjects that capture his interest. Roger has made it his life’s study to gather and understand information from these special places. This expands his knowledge of nature, history, architecture and culture, which inspires him to create his poignant oil paintings. Crediting historical artists, such as John Carlson, Isaac Levitan and John Singer Sargent for their example. Roger has developed his own unique voice in his art. He spends countless hours painting on location or from life capturing important nuances of a scene, day, or an object. Roger embodies the emotion of the scene he is painting by drawing on his knowledge and his dedication to art. Larry Moore “I’ve been a Plein Air painter and instructor for a very long time. Before that I was an illustrator, a graphic designer and an art director, a career in visual communication that has spanned 45 plus years. One thing I’ve found is that to be unique, to stand apart, requires a mastery of method combined with a process of thought and self-discovery in order to achieve authentic expression. A process I’ll be bringing to the PAS table.” www.larrymoorestudios.com Morgan Samuel Price Morgan Samuel Price’s career began in 1968 with Hallmark Cards as an illustrator, but in 1972 she focused on becoming a fine artist. Her motivation to paint is energized by the light as it flows across the scene. Morgan sees light as a tool to explore the visual pleasure of the movement of light over the objects. Painting is not about the objects rather it is a narrative of the scene and the mood created by the artist. Techinically this can be accomplished by the manipulation of the academic principles of painting. Observation is an acquired skill that constantly needs refinement through your lifetime as an artist. Her 40+year career as an artist has been sustained by an overwhelming desire to elevate each moment with uplifting thought. Sharing her knowledge through teaching has brought endless rewards on all levels of her life. www.morgansamuelprice.com

Lori Putnam Recognized for her expressive brushwork, intelligent composition, and superb use of color, Lori Putnam paints small to medium-sized works en plein air and creates large paintings in her studio. Her contemporary, abstract-impressionist style engages viewers, inviting them to look more closely and follow her clues. Appreciators become artists themselves, if only for a brief time. Following a long career in graphic design, Putnam’s life as a full-time fine artist began in 2005. In 2008 and 2009, she and her husband sold all of their belongings and traveled to the Italian countryside for more than seven months with the sole purpose of the painter’s self-study. Concentrated work during that period culminated in an impressive breakthrough for Lori. Now regarded as one of the country’s most sought-after artists, her work and career have been the focus of major art magazines. She maintains a studio in Charlotte, Tennessee. Lori is giving the opening address at Plein Air South. www.loriputnam.com James Richards James Richards (AIS) is an American Impressionist painter who specializes in oils.
