The Vision An International Plein Air Event on The Forgotten Coast The Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s Great Paint-Out, is among the most prestigious plein air events in the country and is now recognized globally. We are very honored to be so highly regarded. This year we are celebrating the 17th anniversary of the event with internationally acclaimed artists who will document the landscape and culture of 100 miles of coastal towns and the people who work and live here. Their art interprets and captures some of the last vestiges of authentic Old Florida. Artistic excellence and the production of investment quality art continues to be the trademark of this 10-day invitational festival.

As the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air event approaches the second decade, the importance of creating art that captures our small part of the world is even more important.

This documentation of our culture has never been more poignant as we reflect on losses of homes and businesses after Hurricane Michael in 2018. “With plein air events popping up all over the country, we realize the importance of focusing on quality and relevance,” says Forgotten Coast en Plein Air Board President, Joe Taylor.

As we do every year, our artists focus on a specific theme that celebrates the people, life, land, and coast. Each year’s programmatic focus includes lectures, art presentations, and community discussions. The collectors are offered a superb mix of subject matter and styles. One of the aspects that differentiates our plein air event from others around the country is that funds raised from the sale of art directly benefit our community. Forgotten Coast en Plein Air is a charitable event that benefits educational and community programs in our counties. We thank the invited artists for their generosity and giving spirit.

The event also features six “Florida’s Finest en Plein Air” artists honored as Plein Air Ambassadors; each will hold painting stations for event attendees who want to try their hand at painting. Collectors, painters, and those hoping to become either or both will revel in a program that allows observation and participation. Forgotten Coast en Plein Air Has A Permanent Home While supporting arts education in all communities of the Forgotten Coast, the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air event has a bricks-and-mortar presence at 201 Reid in Port St. Joe. This building gives us a home office and permanent base of operation during our yearly March event (in addition to locations in Apalachicola, Carrabelle, Mexico Beach, St. George Island, Cape San Blas, and Eastpoint). This building also hosts exhibits, classes, and meeting space for the arts group The Joe Center for the Arts throughout the year.

History, and Purpose Paintings, relationship-building and more The Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition is a 501c3 organization whose primary activity is organizing the annual Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s PaintOut. This event enhances the vitality of the local communities along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. From Mexico Beach to Alligator Point, the event depicts the natural beauty and unique culture of our region. Forgotten Coast en Plein Air also allows residents and visitors a rare opportunity—to actively engage, as volunteers, art lovers, and collectors with nationally known plein air artists from around the world.

Giving Back To Our Communities

In turn, the plein air artists donate a percentage of each painting sale to benefit the arts for the communities of the Forgotten Coast. In honor of our founding member, the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition provided the permanent Richard Carrell Plein Air Collection to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf. Many area partners also benefit from grants for art initiatives. Proceeds from Forgotten Coast en Plein Air support the mission of the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition. By organizing cultural activities, the Coalition enhances the vitality of local communities along Florida’s Forgotten Coast from Mexico Beach to Alligator Point. By supporting this event you document regional history and culture, highlight the preservation and awareness of Florida’s natural resources, reach out to a broad-based, multi-community, multi-generational audience, build communities by empowering local non-profit organizations to be partners, and enrich the quality of life of our communities by encouraging cultural and economic development through art.

Quickdraw

One of the most exciting and fun events of the week, Quickdraw is a competition where all the artists must complete a finished work in a two-hour period. Works are then judged, displayed, and available for sale. Quickdraw is an excellent event if you want to see many of our invited artists, along with other artists, creating finished pieces right before your eyes.

Florida’s Finest

Every year the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air showcases the talents of some of the best artists in the Sunshine State. Their work will be highlighted in an exhibit and be available for sale. Also, see Painting Stations below.

Wet Room

Talk about an exciting venue! At the Wet Room, you’ll see artists bring their freshfrom-the-easel work in from the field to be catalogued, priced, and hung. Watch your favorite artist’s portfolio of work grow throughout the show.

Painting Station

Do you love to paint? Or, did you ever wish there was an easy way to get started? If so, check out our Painting Stations. Here, for a very modest price, you can spend two hours with a professional artist for a one-on-one painting experience. It’s fun, easy, and everything you need is provided. It’s an opportunity you shouldn’t pass up, so sign up early.

Student Art Day

One of the events that Forgotten Coast en Plein Air is most proud of is our Student Art Day. An annual tradition, mentor artists are paired with students from area schools to create amazing works of art. If you love watching creativity blossom, be sure to attend Student Art Day and share a community lunch with artists of all ages.

Hone your artistic skills at one of our Workshops. Here, you’ll meet with one or more of our nationally known instructors who, through lectures, slide shows or demonstrations, will greatly help you improve your own painting technique.

Artists’ Choice

Each year, at the end of the week of painting we ask all the artists to submit a few of their favorite works for the ultimate competition, Artists’ Choice. Then, the artists themselves vote for best in show and their top pick is displayed with winners from previous years. If you want to see a window into our Forgotten Coast en Plein Air history, this exhibit is a must.

Invited Artists 2022 Forgotten Coast en Plein Air Artists World-renowned artists paint the towns and landscapes of the Forgotten Coast of Florida

SUZIE BAKER Shenandoah, Texas “I love that I get to be a professional oil painter with my life. In the history of the planet, that’s a rarefied thing.”

Suzie Baker is an award-winning artist whose paintings are regularly on display in magazines, prestigious national shows and plein air invitationals. She became president of Oil Painters of America in 2020 and holds signature status in that distinguished organization as well as the American Impressionist Society, American Women Artists, and others. In addition to being a still life and portrait artist, Suzie has been painting en plein air since she was a teenager. A sought-after instructor, for her humorous and informative style, Suzie teaches through her instructional video, Color Magic, and in workshops around the United States, Europe and close to her home in the Houston, Texas area. suziebaker.com

POPPY BALSER Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada “I embrace the role of documentarian as an artist. Not so much in looking back to paint what was, but by painting what is here now, knowing that in a few short years the “now” I am painting will be someone else’s historical record.”

Poppy Balser developed an early connection with the seashore as she studies the sea and its environs through her paintings. Her work painting the fishing industry of the Bay of Fundy, as well as her portrayal of local sailing ships, has earned her a place as a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists. Balser tells the stories of her paintings on her blog, where she gives readers a real sense of being on the Bay of Fundy coast. poppybalser.com

GREG BARNES Charlotte, North Carolina “There are few places I go to paint that match the qualities of the Forgotten Coast. The endless variety of scenery and subject matter combined with a rich culture and history make this a very special painting destination.”

Greg Barnes, a 1985 fine art graduate of Wake Forest, lives and works out of Charlotte, North Carolina. He favors plein air painting with pastels for its vibrancy, spontaneity, and impressionistic qualities. His work can be found at Karis Gallery in Hilton Head SC and at Coconut Grove Gallery & Design in Miami FL. BRIENNE BROWN Julian, Pennsylvania “I find beauty in everyday life, the so called ‘mundane’.

Ordinary people going about their everyday lives inspire me.

I especially enjoy painting en plein air, where each painting reminds me of where I was, of the experiences I had, the sounds, smells, and the people I met.”

Brienne Brown’s work can be seen in Splash 17: Inspired Subjects, PleinAir Magazine, and Watercolor Artist Magazine. Charles is an award-winning artist whose most recent awards include 2021’s “Best Figure in a Landscape” during the Gloucester Paint Out in Gloucester, VA and “Best of Show Jean Wagner Troemel Award” in the St. Augustine Honors Show 2019 for his painting “Lost Among the Trees,” which was painted in the 2019 Forgotten Coast en Plein Air Event. MICHELLE HELD Sarasota, Florida “I’m thrilled to paint the incredible landscape, meet new locals and revisit with many of the people that are all so passionate about the Forgotten Coast!”

Michelle brings with her a splash of vibrancy, a flutter of unique perspective, and the song of nature in its truest form. Michelle currently participates in invitational paint outs and is widely collected throughout the United States.

Often commissioned for custom paintings as well as historical restoration, Michelle’s passion for wildlife and its ecosystems brought her to embrace the natural world through painting from life. Invited Artists KATHLEEN B. HUDSON Lexington, Kentucky “The timeless quality of the Forgotten Coast keeps the inspiration flowing for artists - it’s little wonder we all treasure the chance to paint here.”

Kathleen creates landscapes in oil, both in her studio and en plein air. Her style is shaped by her close observation of nature and her desire to explore light and atmospherics in the landscape. She now undertakes several national juried competitions each year where she has won numerous national awards including Artist’s Choice at the 2018 Forgotten Coast en Plein Air. kathleenbhudson.com

CHARLIE HUNTER Bellows Falls, Vermont “I do four or five major plein air events a year, but the Forgotten Coast is my favorite. The sense of community that the staff and volunteers have built, the social mission that permeates the event, the lovely, fragile ecosystem, vernacular architecture, and working waterfronts make it special.”

Originally a designer of tour posters for Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia Band, etc., Charlie became a music manager and then a creator of long-distance train tours. He lives and works in Vermont in a spacious studio overseen by an irascible cat, Corduroy. He likes to paint. Hunter has been awarded major awards at Forgotten Coast Plein Air as well as at the Laguna (CA), Door County (WI), Wayne (PA), Sedona (AZ), Cape Ann (MA), and Easton (MD) events. TERRY MIURA Fair Oaks, California “I’m particularly drawn to the subject matters that are full of character and old Florida charm, like the fishing boats and wooden structures, not to mention the humid coastal air that creates a unique light and atmosphere.”

Terry paid his dues in New York as an illustrator for clients such as Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated. KATHIE ODOM Knoxville, Tennessee “I call myself a “Nostalgic Impressionist” as a way of identifying the subjects and style of painting that interest me most. Also I am really passionate about plein air painting and allow myself to get lost in the wonderful process of it all!”

After graduating from the University of Tennessee in Art Education and Fine Arts, Kathie received early recognition for pastel works. But it was 2009 when she found a home in painting oils en plein air. Kathie resides with her husband and maintains a studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. She travels extensively and spends much of her time oil painting in the great outdoors. Also teaching workshops and participating in plein air events occupies much of her calendar. Most recently she received Best in Show from the Olmsted Plein Air Invitational in Atlanta (Spring 2018). MORGAN SAMUEL PRICE Altamonte Springs, FL “I see light as a tool to explore the visual pleasure of the movement over the objects. Capturing that movement sets the time of day. The Wet Room: Art Fresh Off the Easel A feature unique to the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air event is a fully functioning Wet Room which sells paintings as quickly as the artists deliver them to the check-in station. The paintings are literally “wet” as they are often completed just hours before arrival. The Wet Room features the work of all invited artists. The paintings change by the hour and often

art collectors arrive daily to make their selections from the most recent deliveries.

Collectors from across the country watch the online gallery where each painting is photographed and posted immediately to the website. If you cannot attend in person, you may view the paintings online.

Enjoy lunch and learn how composing and painting an outdoor still life can help artists on plein air landscape paintings, as well.

Kevin MacPherson’s reputation as one of America’s most respected plein air painters rests on artistic discipline, a commitment to sharing, and color. As a painter and teacher, his career has taken Kevin around the world sharing his expertise in the universal language of color. Critics and painters alike have recognized him with awards and memberships in prestigious organizations like the Master Oil Painters of America and Master American Impressionist Society.

The Founding Member and first President of the Plein Air Painters of America, Kevin is also a Master member of the California Art Club and a member of the Salmagundi Club.

Mr. MacPherson’s work has been featured in more than 75 publications, books, television presentations, and videos. He has written three books on landscape painting. Currently, Kevin devotes much attention to work with underprivileged children in Central America and China, through his foundation, “Art Ambassador for a Colorful World.”

Thoughtful Paintings: Plein Air Painting in Time of a Pandemic Invited Artist Steven Walker

“Thoughtful Painting” is a look at mentally healthy practices during the pandemic. This may include everything from painting a family of trees to attending safe gatherings. During his residency on the Forgotten Coast in February, celebrated plein air painter Steven Walker explored the design and content of the landscape and how it pertains to everyday things that both stress and ease our minds during these hard times. Steven will reflect on the experience and discuss his resultant body of work during his presentation at a reception on Sunday evening, March 20, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at The Joe Center for the Arts, Port St. Joe.

In January, the Forgotten Coast was the site of an immersive three-day painting experience, introducing students to painting en plein air as a potential career path. The Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition and Florida A&M University’s Department of Visual Arts, Humanities and Theater partnered in this effort. Two of the 2022 Forgotten Coast en Plein Air invited artists, Michelle Held and Manon Sander, worked with FAMU students, Jude Jones and Haley Wilson, as well as their Fine Arts professor Dr. Nan Liu, painting by daylight and discussing the business of art and life goals in the evening. The resulting body of work will serve as a backdrop to the Residency

That’s why we consider Student Art Day to be one of the jewels in the crown of the Forgoten Coast en Plein Air event. Started in 2007, Student Art day has become one of the most popular events of the year.

Enjoy the Fun

This year you can join our featured artists at the Mexico Beach Welcome Center as they mentor local students from Forgotten Coast schools. Each artist will work side-by-side with a student to help create a plein air piece of art. The students will sign their paintings and volunteers will frame them onsite. Artists, students, teachers, and volunteers will then gather for a noon lunch to celebrate the day’s accomplishments.

In the afternoon, the student paintings will be hung at The Joe Center for the Arts, 201 Reid Avenue in Port St. Joe for the duration of the event. Please join us for activities celebrating the wonderful tradition of student and professional collaboration. And, if you happen to miss Student Art Day, be sure to stop by to see their paintings up close.

Plein Air South Returns March 13-17 Plein Air South is a gathering of plein air art groups, individual artists, and art-related businesses who have joined together to highlight the plein air talent and resources of America’s Southeast. The event will feature five days of presentations, demonstrations, instruction, vendor exhibition, and, of course, painting outdoors!
