Message from the President of the Board of Directors Due to the times we live in, we are constantly facing new challenges that are characterized by significant changes in circumstances and conditions. These changes generate worry, uncertainty and anxiety but at the same time provide the opportunity to face challenges in a different way. The key to overcome these conditions are new ideas and the expansion or the intensification of the efforts that have already been set in motion. The latter has been the course set by La Fundaciรณn Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc., during the last years. Although the foundation continues to operate within that same framework and is not exempt from facing the challenges and the limitations faced by other entities, it has been able to find the way to expand its services and identify new options and alternatives to contribute to the wellbeing of the island and its people. I pride myself not only knowing but being able to communicate that the foundation has achieved the goals included in its strategic plan for 2014. Our main project, Educational Metamorphosis, continues to be developed and implemented in schools. Its evolution and its alignment with the curriculum established by the Department of Education of Puerto Rico, as well as the capacitation and the participation of faculty members and other parties involved in the system, anticipates that this model will have the support needed to attain permanency and sustainability. Educational Metamorphosis is a long-term project that needs the constant support of each of its components in order to achieve transforming results. Nevertheless, from a short-term standpoint we are pleased with its accomplishments, as well as with the evident and positive changes in the behavior and the academic progress of the students. Another reason for satisfaction is the notable increase in parental participation in the workshops and the strengthening of social and emotional skills outside the classroom.

It is our task to continue searching for new ways to increase the reach of our services. The needs increase and the population we serve continues changing and each day brings along unexpected turns. In order to be able to attend these variables our staff has established alliances and relationships with other foundations and entities that promote community action. This allows the foundation to unite efforts and maximize the efficiency and the effectiveness of its services. Within the schools we have searched for and now count with leaders that have seized the opportunity to join our efforts and thus have achieved transformations in their communities and the schooling facilities. These leaders not only motivate us, but have ascertained that improvement is possible. All these achievements have been attained through the work and the dedication of the administrative and programming staff of La Fundaciรณn Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc., that with each passing day strives to improve the quality of life of the people it impacts. Their commitment is truly inspiring. The support of all our sponsors is essential. They make it possible for us to serve a greater amount of students and communities as time goes by. We are grateful for their contributions and for upholding their commitment in the development of this beautiful project. My gratitude goes to all the volunteers and friends of the foundation, especially the members of our Board of Directors which have actively participated in all the activities and will continue directing our organization towards its strategic goals in 2015 and the years to come.

Message from the Executive Director In times when Puerto Rico faces so many challenges it is of utmost importance that we acknowledge the labor of transformation that is taking place in our communities. At the Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis Inc. we not only believe but wager on the education of our youngsters as the solution to our current crisis. Each day we not only touch the lives of hundreds of students but positively impact their educational communities. Therefore, we want to share La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc., Annual Report for 2014-015 with you, our social investors, friends and colleagues. This document also includes our strategic vision for the next three years. On one side, our report presents the recent achievements of our Educational Metamorphosis program, which uses a creative approach to improve schooling and aspires to the creation of compassionate, educated, assertive and empowered citizens that display critical thought and possess enough soundness to make individual and collective decisions. Besides the traditional reinforcement of academic skills through the Learning Model of Socio-emotional Skills (known by its acronym in Spanish, MADES) and which serves as support for the Educational Metamorphosis program, it also facilitates the development of healthy and innovative environments in the classroom which in turn leads to the students’ academic success. We have innovated the alignment of the socioemotional skills with the Department of Education’s curriculum and emphasize in the importance of training and capacitating teachers to insure the permanence, the recurrence, the sustainability and the eventual escalation of this effort. In addition, during this year we provided workshops for teaching and non-teaching school personnel, parents and caretakers to insure that socioemotional skills they acquired will be set into motion in their homes and communities. At present we provide services to more than 600 students through our after-school programs. The public elementary schools that receive our 4

educational services are: Republica de Brasil at Urb. La Riviera; Dr. Isaac González-Martínez in Puerto Nuevo; Rafael Hernández at Embalse San José; Jesús María Quiñones in Villa Palmeras, Juan B. Huyke at Urb. Altamesa and; Luis Lloréns Torres. On the other hand, the Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc. is developing drug, tobacco and alcohol consumption prevention programs aimed at youngsters. In 2011 our organization was selected by the Administration of Mental Health and Addiction Prevention Services (known by its acronym in Spanish, ASSMCA,) as participant in the Puerto Rico Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (PR SPF-SIG) in order to strengthen the prevention of alcohol intake among minors between the ages of 13 and 17 that reside in communities within the Municipality of Trujillo Alto. The foundation participated in this effort through the creation of Trujillo Alto’s Advisory Council on Prevention, comprised by a group of citizens representing the different sectors that strive to implement the strategies and public policies to prevent the consumption of alcohol by minors. In addition, a social marketing campaign was developed to prevent merchants from selling spirits to minors, as well as a strategy based on evidence and that shows students how to improve their communication skills in order to resist peer pressure, thus leading to avoid alcohol consumption, was implemented at the Fair View Elementary School and the Rafael Cordero Junior High School. For us at La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc. education as well as the prevention and the development of socio-emotional skills are the answer to many of our social situations. We believe that if we offer our students the required tools and a first rate education we will be able to create the future leaders of Puerto Rico. I sincerely hope you join our efforts.

About La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc. Chana Goldstein and Samuel Levis

Our Roots: La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc. is a private nonprofit organization that is exempt of taxation and committed to the creation and the promotion of groundbreaking initiatives aimed at transforming the school and community environments. It is an organization cognizant that a culture of peace and healthy community coexistence is the key to attain academic excellence. La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc., was established in 1998 in memory of two philanthropists – Chana Goldstein and Samuel Levis – to promote and support the social wellbeing of the country. Their children – David, Salomón and Zoila – perpetuated the commitment of their parents to better the education and the integrity of human beings through the Foundation’s programs and initiatives. Mission: Promote pioneering initiatives that generate an integral transformation of the academic and home environments by means of the refinement of the socio-emotional skills that result in a peaceful coexistence within the community atmospheres as well as to better academic progress. Vision: Display leadership through the promotion of education and investigations in educational centers and communities that stimulate a healthy coexistence through strategies based on scientific evidence and the socio-emotional skills required for the development of future generations.

Context: In lieu of the social, educational and economic challenges that Puerto Rico confronts, the foundation proposes positive changes and groundbreaking initiatives that generate trust and hope in our people. Our main offer consists of enhancing the academic and community environments through education regarding socio-emotional skills. A great deal of the violence that engulfs most milieus of the country is associated with the lack of socio-emotional dexterity. In other words, to the inability to control one’s emotions, the lack of skills to manage conflicts and interpersonal relationships, the absence of empathy and the use of wrong decision-making processes when dealing with one’s wellbeing and that of others. The promotion of these skills at an early age, starting with elementary school students, their parents and caretakers is the foundation’s safe bet to engender better academic and community environments. School can be the ideal place not only to learn academic skills, but those abilities that allow a healthy development of talents to interact with others during a lifetime. In order to achieve the latter, the Foundation works hand in hand with academic communities – students, teachers and non-educational personnel as well as with the parents of pupils – and has established alliances with the Department of Education of Puerto Rico and other governmental agencies. These alliances boost significant advances in academic achievements as well as in the socio-emotional skills of our youths and also improves and promotes the social wellbeing of Puerto Rico.

Conceptual Framework

Our programs propose a creative approach for academic improvement. Besides reinforcing academic skills, the Socio-emotional Skills Learning Model (known for its acronym in Spanish, MADES,) creates permanent environments of solidarity that are favorable for academic success. MADES facilitates the development of students into respectful, compassionate, educated, assertive citizens that are empowered by critical thinking and with enough strength to make individual and collective decisions. The model accentuates resilience, the human capacity to display flexibility when faced with extreme situations, thus allowing a person to overcome them. MADES also teaches and consolidates the five essential socio-emotional skills to understand and manage the many challenges generated by society: self-awareness, self-management, interpersonal relationships, social awareness and responsible decision-making. This Model has aligned the abovementioned skills with the Puerto Rico Department of Education’s curriculum with the purpose of offering highcontent activities that help children make decisions and develop self-awareness, communication, empathy, self-conscience and the ability to solve problems. Scientific Basis: Our initiatives for the development of socioemotional skills at our public school system are derived from the proven scientific model Social and Emotional Learning (SEL.) We apply the SEL strategies related to the improvement of the academic environment in a concrete and practical way and we incorporate them in order to mitigate bullying and increase academic progress at student level. The foundation was the author of the first SEL curriculum and manual that was developed in and for Puerto Rico and that is currently offered by personnel certified by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL,) of the University of Illinois in Chicago. As result

of this effort, the foundation became one of the very few private and public organizations to count with a comprehensible, proven and scientifically based model that handles in a holistic, deliberate, systematic and uninterrupted way all the factors that impact the success of a student at individual level and in the context of his or her amplest academic community. Projection: Our prognosis is the transformation of the FundaciĂłn Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis into an entity centered in the promotion of academic excellence through the teaching of socio-emotional skills. To achieve this, emphasis will be placed on the program Educational Metamorphosis as emblematic project, the capacitation of human resources, the development of educational resources, the promotion of information regarding the importance of social and emotional development and the procurement of grants. The foundation will also focus on the dynamic promotion of its endeavors in the media in order to obtain the backing of the community and attract sponsors from the general public, private entities and government agencies that will become economic resources. Strategy: To achieve the previously mentioned resolves, new strategic goals have been established, all of them focused in the promotion of healthy academic and community environments, starting in infancy until the transition to junior high school. The foundation will develop innovative programs based on evidence, facilitate the professional betterment of the academic personnel, document the impact of its initiatives by means of rigorous examination, publish information regarding its initiatives, diversity and solidify the financial sources and means, capacitate its human resources, fortify its organization and structure and maintain an effective and transparent administration.

Contribute knowledge and offer services and innovative programs that lead to the development of a healthy coexistence in the academic and community environments. This is to be attained by the integration of socio-emotional skills such as: the creative mediation during conflicts, the prevention of bullying, the strengthening of academic skills and the prevention of the use of substances, all this under the banner of Educational Metamorphosis.

As we did last year, the tasks completed by La Fundaciรณn Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc. during 2015 respond to the agenda included in our 2013-2018 Strategic Framework. This work guide concentrates our efforts in 8 strategic goals intended to attain the following goals:

Goal Attainment Indicators 1.1 Amount and types of programs and initiatives that include the management of socio- emotional skills in the seven elementary schools impacted during the 2003-2018 period. 1.2 Results of the Puerto Rican Academic Progress Tests (PPAA) in participating schools. 1.3 Positive and documented changes in the academic climate at participating schools: a greater amount of parents and caretakers participating in school activities; decrease in the incidence of conflicts that arise between students when at school; decrease in the amount of absences among students, teachers and other school personnel; increase in the amounts and types of alliances between schools and communities and; an increase in the amount and types of co-curricular projects happening at participating schools. 1.4 Positive changes in the prevention of the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among underage children and youngsters measured by the results of the surveys conducted after the interventions. 1.5 Change in the grades attained by the students at the end of the academic semester.

Our Programs After-School Programs: Educational Metamorphosis and EDUCA-ACTIVOS The after-school programs develop academic skills in Spanish, Mathematics and complementary classes and integrate socio-emotional skills. They form part of our Educational Metamorphosis model, which is aimed at the teaching of social and emotional skills such as: self-awareness, self-control, social sensibility, interpersonal relations and the making responsible decisions. It pretends to propitiate a healthy coexistence environment at school and at the same time facilitate academic achievement, motivation, empowerment and the social commitment of students, their teachers and their families. The after-school programs are underway in five schools of the San Juan educational region: Luis Lloréns-Torres, Jesús M. Quiñones, Juan B. Huyke, Rafael Hernández, Isaac González-Martínez and Eugenio María de Hostos.

The Drug-Free Communities Program The Drug-Free Communities Program offers extensive training to the members of the Coalition to Support the prevention of alcohol and tobacco consumption among youths. The goal of the project for the inhibition of Tabaco and alcohol consumption by youths is to strengthen the prevention infrastructure at community level in Puerto Rico. La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc. is currently developing this initiative alongside the Autonomous Municipality of Trujillo Alto by means of economic support of the Drug Free Communities Federal Program. The coalition has presented its work and achievements, which led to an open assembly discussion of the diverse issues regarding the consequences of alcohol use among youths and the challenges and difficulties inherent in the wide spectrum commercial and media-induced access to alcohol. Its main outcomes were the implementation of individual and community strategies in Trujillo Alto, wherefore the coalition and the foundation documented their success in attaining the goals: the 16

establishment of work plans for the organization, the implementation of an effective coalition-based prevention approach, the execution of a broad social marketing campaign, the design and approval of a municipal law restricting the sale of alcoholic beverages to young adults in Trujillo Alto and an increase in the compliance of regulations by businesses located in the municipality. We also developed a social campaign including both informal and in-depth interviews and identified the most important reasons businesses had in regards to the distribution of alcohol to young people. This information was crucial in the design of diverse educational and promotional materials to prevent alcohol use and promote the full compliance of business owners.

VISTA/AmeriCorps Volunteer Program In 2014 La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc.was able to recruit 10 positions under the program VISTA/AmeriCorps. This has helped us develop the inner capacity required to respond to our organizational growth.

SER National La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc. recently joined the SER national network. This alliance will allow us to support the efforts of SER Network of Affiliates by providing capacitation and technical assistance, the increase of funds garnering strategies and promotion at local and international levels. The SER Network of Affiliates is aimed at providing assistance to people in need, placing special emphasis on the Hispanic community, which can benefit from of programs designed, among other things, to improve education, grant capacitation and increase employability.mejorar la educación, brindar capacitación y aumentar empleabilidad.

Volunteer and Internship Program During 2014 a volunteer program was developed for the Foundation and a collaboration agreement was reached with the University of Puerto Rico.

Several evaluation tools were developed; one aimed at measuring the impact of the pilot programs and another aimed at measuring the effectiveness of our programs through a survey to determine the satisfaction of the educational staff, parents, caretakers and students. The results of these evaluations were as follows: SCHOOL STAFF • 94% indicated feeling satisfied with the design and the timetable of the after school programs. • 82% was satisfied with the use of the new socio-emotional skills curriculum. • 96% expressed satisfaction with his or her work. • 86% expressed satisfaction regarding the educational strategies in the after-school program. STUDENTS • 91% enjoy the Spanish class. • 93% like the respect and kindness displayed by teachers. • 92% is thrilled with the Mathematics class. La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc., also participated in the remodeling of the Valle de Collores library at the Luis Lloréns-Torres School. This undertaking had the support of Jacobo Zarzecki, a student from Head of Nichols School that led a fund-collection activity at his school to remodel the library. In addition, a group of first grade students from St. John’s School in Condado donated books they collected for the library. This activity was an idea of student Alejandro Madero, who also undertook the task of organizing, directing and personally handing over the textbooks to Luis Lloréns Torres School. The Valle de Collores Library was inaugurated with a storybook-reading activity in which several artists, including singer Sie7e participated.

GOALS ATTAINED The spreading of information regarding our afterschool programs and other services rendered by the Foundation has materialized due to an increase in publications in our Facebook profile. This has generated an increase in the amount of followers and the amount of Likes received. The Foundation’s activities in the social media has also produced a larger amount of exchange between the organization and users. In order to achieve a larger presence in the social media we have designed a uniform style for photos and images. It’s important to emphasize that a new website was created with the input provided by the Foundation’s Board of Directors member Barnardo Fiol Costa. Part of this year’s tasks include the development of information and the insertion of strategies in the media. We will write editorials in which we will express our point of view regarding education and among other efforts, the way in which the Foundation is developing new academic skills. On the other hand, all official documents pertaining our after-school programs were revised and adjusted. Also, all documents were reviewed to corroborate student assistance and to be able to create working plans and inform about the work performed by academic and non-academic employees.

GOALS ATTAINED INDIVIDUAL STRATEGY - Say It Straight Say it straight is a scientifically-based training program that aims to improve communication, conduct and empowerment skills. It increases self-awareness, positive relationships, personal responsibility and social conscience. Likewise, it diminishes destructive and high-risk conducts such as the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs, violence, precocious sexual conduct, bullying and other behaviors that lead to the acquirement of venereal diseases.

Among the most outstanding results of the individual strategy included in Saying it Straight are the following: • • • • •

During its implementation the students learned five different styles of communication which they identified by means of practical exercises. The Physical Education teacher stated that the conduct of the group had improved. Situations between students, including enmities, and physical as well as verbal aggressions were mended. The students classified the experience as educational and one they would like to repeat. The parents of two students that were selected authorized their participation in visits to businessmen, an activity that forms part of the social marketing campaign included in the Here are the facts! (¡Aquí están los datos!) program.

Since 1982 Say it straight has been successfully implemented in schools as well as among adults and jail inmates that are receiving dependency treatment. Its creation included the input of its participants, thus allowing it to be an appropriate and sensitive program towards the needs of all ages and genders as well as ethnic and cultural groups.

ENVIRONMENT STRATEGY – SOCIAL MARKETING The environment strategies implemented as part of the program for the prevention of alcohol consumption by minors are divided into two categories: the social marketing campaign Here are the Facts! (¡Aquí están los datos!) and recommendations to strengthen the municipal Public Order Code. The intended audience of the social marketing campaign Here are the facts! (¡Aquí están los datos!) is comprised by businessmen that sell alcoholic beverages in commercial establishments located within the Autonomous Municipality of Trujillo Alto. The most significant achievements of this project are: • Two rounds of visits to businessmen in which the message for the prevention of alcohol consumption by minors was disseminated were completed from January to December 2014. Article 3.01 of Trujillo Alto’s Public Order Code was also reviewed with them and informative material regarding the applicable norms and the damage caused to minors by the use of alcohol was also distributed. • The total amount of commercial establishments impacted in both rounds was 84. The following actions pertaining the design and the implementation of the social marketing campaign were performed previous to the rounds of visits: • Study of the Intended Goal and Social Marketing Plan.

• Development of products that contain key messages of the social marketing campaign. These included: drinking-glasses / napkins / posters / carry-ons / towels / bottle openers / informative brochure regarding dispositions of the Public Order Code / a cautionary note sent via the postal service to 84 businessmen about the consequences they face for violating the law / T-shirts with a message allusive to the campaign / sticker distributed in places where businessmen purchase provisions for their establishments. A total of more than 7,000 units of promotional items has been distributed. ENVIRONMENT STRATEGY - PUBLIC ORDER CODE The second environment strategy completed as part of the social marketing campaign was an analysis of the contents and the implementation of the Trujillo Alto Public Order Code, specifically those pertaining Article 3.0, which regulates the sale of alcohol to persons less than 18 years of age. The Advisory Council for Local Prevention (CAP-L,) comprised by a group of representatives of the Trujillo Alto community that counsels the Foundation, actively collaborated in the process. The Chana and Samuel Levis Foundation team submitted for consideration by the mayor of Trujillo Alto, the Honorable José Luis Cruz, as well as the municipal legislature, a draft for a new Municipal Ordinance recommending that the Code be adjusted to the

Nevertheless, the 2013-2014 Youth Survey revealed a 3.6% increase (from 64.6% to 68.2%) among students that began drinking before reaching 15 years of age. The total amount of students surveyed between January and May of 2014 was 292. La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc. also collaborates with the publishing of the 20142015 Youth Survey. Three hundred sixty junior high school and high school students in Trujillo Alto were surveyed during September and October of 2014. The analysis and the results of this exercise should be ready in September-October of 2014. This analysis is performed by CIES. provisions established by the Puerto Rico Treasury Department’s Internal Revenues Code. This public policy demands that businessmen request customers that want to purchase alcoholic beverages and appear to be less than 27 years of age to produce an identification bearing a photo. The Administrator of the Trujillo Alto Code requested the Foundation to send the digital version of the Ordinance draft in order to give this issue priority. The mayor promised to review the norm and render the findings of the analysis to the Municipal Legislature. In the event the Ordnance draft is approved, access to alcohol by the underage population will become more difficult in Trujillo Alto. OTHER EFFORTS As part of the strategies aimed at preventing the consumption of alcohol by minors in Trujillo Alto, the Foundation coordinated the 2013-2014 Youth Survey. In relation to the previous year’s data, this study reflected a reduction in alcohol consumption by minors. Among the most significant results are: • A 7.5% drop among minors that ingested alcohol sometime during their lives and a 9.3% drop among the ones which answered that they consumed alcohol at least once during the previous year. • A 0.8% reduction among minors that expressed to have taken alcohol during the last month.

The total amount of students surveyed for the 20132014 and the 2014-2015 editions of the Youth Survey was 652. TRUJILLO ALTO ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR LOCAL PREVENTION (CAP-L) This voluntary workgroup that is representative of the Trujillo Alto community held monthly meetings to discuss issues related to the development of the programmatic plan. Each of the 12 meetings held had quorum. ACTIVITIES AND OUTSTANDING RESULTS The Second Community Forum was held at Trujillo Alto’s city hall on June 19, 2014. Some 100 persons representing private organizations and public agencies as well as community leaders and experts in the area of prevention attended the event. Other activities related with prevention that were completed by the Chana and Samuel Levis Foundation were: • The National Conference on Prevention, held September 17th through the 19th in Hartford, Connecticut, to which representatives of the Foundation attended as part of the delegation from Puerto Rico. • The dissemination of data regarding the objectives of the project and the Youth Survey. Forty parents or caretakers from Rafael Cordero Junior High School received information. 2014-2015 Annual Report

• Gathering of CAPs (Advisory Councils on Prevention from the 10 SPF-SIG organizations) took place on October 23, 2014 in Rio Grande with the participation of some 200 attendees. • Student and parental orientation regarding the prevention of alcohol consumption by minors during the activity Choose your College, held on October 29, 2014 in Trujillo Alto and attended by some 500 participants.

ACHIEVEMENTS The project for the prevention of alcohol consumption by minors in Trujillo Alto has been amply disseminated through Puerto Rico’s media outlets. The efforts for the diffusion are complemented by means of an agreement with the newspaper Trujillo Actual, whose director is a member of the CAP-I. Due to this arrangement, the coordinator of the SPF-SIG proposal publishes editorial regarding issues related to alcohol consumption by minors. A series of public service announcements about the project were recently added.

The presence of the SPF-SIG project in the media included: • An interview with the coordinator of ASSMCA’s SPF-SIG proposal in the program Piedra Papel y Tijera (Stone, Paper and Scissors,) transmitted by the University of Puerto Rico’s radio station. • An article published in De Todo newspaper about the Second Community Forum. • An article published in the newspaper Presencia regarding the results of the campaign for the prevention of the use of alcohol by minors. • An article about the Second Community Forum published by the newspaper Trujillo Actual. • A front page article about the decrease in the consumption of alcohol by minors that appeared in De Todo newspaper. • An article in El Nuevo Día newspaper regarding the reduction of alcohol consumption among minors in Trujillo Alto. • An article about the campaign to prevent the use of alcohol by minors that appeared in the newspaper Trujillo Actual. • The editorial The Cultural Dimension of Alcohol Consumption by Minors, published by the newspapers San Juan Actual and Trujillo Actual. • Televised interview about the campaign for the prevention of alcohol use by minors in WKAQ Channel 2’s newscast Telemundo Fin de Semana. Likewise, the project counts with a Facebook profile in which entries with information regarding the prevention of the use of alcohol by minors are published on a weekly basis and in which the undergoing efforts in Trujillo Alto are published on a weekly basis are highlighted.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS During the next three years the members of VISTA/ AmeriCorps will speed up the attainment of the objectives of the project by increasing the capacities of institutions to garner funds, including the writing of subsidy proposals based on evaluation and submitted through the Internet. This group will also render support to the processes of strategic planning, to the development and the alignment of the curriculum with the program for the enlargement of socioemotional skills as well as to the evaluation of the community and the volunteers’ capacitation and endeavors.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The SER Affiliate Network also assists in the search for opportunities, orientation and labor placement. The affiliates can participate in the economic development, the activities aimed at the creation of jobs and other programs and services that can benefit individuals and the local community.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

We will serve as practice center for students that require internship service in several disciplines. This will also help us to increase the amount of tutors in the programs, and to attend to the needs of students and parents, since the initiative will include Social Work and Psychology students. Likewise, we will create several initiatives and collaborations with Banco de Alimentos (Food Bank,) the University of Puerto Rico, the Santander Bank Volunteer Program and the Early Childhood Forum.

David, Zoila and Salomón Levis established La Fundación Chana Goldstein y Samuel Levis, Inc. María Fernanda Levis Peralta became the organization’s first executive director. Maestros al Rescate (Teachers to the Rescue,) a program granting technical support to school teachers began its operations.

2001

Project Enlace (Liaison,) the first computerized network for the coordination of services and to perform investigations related to homeless people in the Caribbean was created.

2003

Project DIME, providing funds to the country’s public schools for the execution of innovative academic projects was implemented.

2005

In response to the violence-prone environment in schools, the Program Creative Management of Conflicts (Manejo Creativo de Conflictos) was born. Alliances with Pfizer, Walmart and AstraZeneca materialized and the Creative Management of Conflicts was implemented at schools in Barceloneta, Canóvanas, Caguas and Guayama.

The Foundation was acknowledged by the National Human Services Data Consortium and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for its work with Project Liaison (Proyecto Enlace.)

In order to stimulate savings among children, the Little Seeds (Semillitas) program was implemented.

By means of the initiative We Inspire Students to Take Control of their Future (Inspiramos a los estudiantes a apoderarse de su futuro) visits were made to the University of Puerto Rico.

The program Arm Yourself with Valor (Ármate de Valor) was implemented with the purpose providing orientation regarding the use of weapons in schools.

2008

The program Pacific Coexistence (Convivencia Pacífica,) which focused on the educational region of Humacao emerged to foment safer and healthier schools. Through the program Character Development (Formación de Carácter) youths from the educational regions of Mayagüez and Cabo Rojo attended workshops related to the prevention of drug and alcohol consumption.

The Foundation consolidated itself as an organization dedicated to the improvement of education in Puerto Rico. Educational Metamorphosis emerged as an integral program aimed at the development of socio-emotional skills in schools and communities. Students from the Nemesio R, Canales and Luis MuñozSouffront schools in San Juan received tutorships in Spanish and Mathematics through the Positive Reinforcement for Success (Refuerzo Positivo para el Éxito) program.

The Foundation warmly receives ten new AmeriCorps/ VISTA volunteers. The Foundation proudly rebuild the library and donates books and donates books to the Luis Llorens Elementary School New curriculum are created for our afterschool programs align with the standards of the Puerto Rico Department of Education. We introduce Second Step Curriculum, which is based on the development of emotional skills. Through individual and environmental strategies, the Alcohol consumption prevention program directly impacts 45 students, over 80 local business, and distributes over 7,000 pieces of promotion material in the city of Trujillo Alto; to prevent access and consumption of alcohol by kids and youth before 18 years of age.

The Foundation started to implement schoolwide their flagship program Educational Metamorphosis at Luis Llorens Torres Elementary School. The foundation receives new funding from the Drug Free Communities’ Support Program, our prevention work in Trujillo Alto continue to strengthen community efforts and policy changes against alcohol availability and consumption, by kids and youth under the age of 18 years old. DFC funds made possible the development of the “Substance Abuse Action and Prevention Community Coalition” (Coalición Comunitaria de Acción y Prevención de Abuso de Sustancias). This group of community leaders in twelve social sectors from Trujillo Alto Municipality emerge from the former Prevention Advisor Council (Consejo Asesor de Prevención). Along with Foundation’s staff, this coalition its responsible for the development and implementation of community action plans and efforts to prevent youth to gain access and start using alcohol and tobacco products before 18 years old. 25
