Mission beyond the finish line
Precious Friah Antonia Bernabe a 17-yearold SHS student, is gaining attention for reasons beyond her athleticism. This Filamerian is recognized in the Philippine athletics scene after obtaining a silver medal in the 400-meter dash at the National PRISAA Games in 2024. Nevertheless, her path to this point was marked by passion, determination, and an overwhelming sense of mission rather than an aim for celebrity.
Her story began when she participated in her school's sports festival at the young age of eight, simply to represent her section instead of with ambitious objectives in sight.
Filling in as a participant was a simple gesture, but it ignited a spark within her that would influence her future. Her desire for athletics became more than just a school activity after that moment. It turned become her pathway
Since then, the young athlete has established a strong basis in the field along with competing in various competitions. Beyond the medals, what makes her stand out are her commitment and tenacity; she has won three gold medals in regional competitions over the years, and most recently, she won two silver and two bronze at the highly participated National PRISAA.
At the National PRISAA 2024, Precious highlighted her willpower and ability by winning the 400-meter dash silver medal and assisting her team in earning a strong position in the 4x400-meter relay. She distinguished herself as an athlete and a role model of perseverance under the weight of the competition. "My motivation was to make my mom proud, but I additionally wanted to push myself and win,” she adds with a smile that says it all.
Precious perceives every competition as an opportunity to express gratitude for her mother's constant encouragement. She owes her achievements to her mother's sacrifices; she has stood by her during good times and bad. She has witnessed her mother's everyday struggles and hardships to provide her with a better life, as she is a single mother's child
"I witness my mom's strength every day. To repay her and make her satisfied, I want to achieve more. She’s my biggest inspiration,” she shared. Her mother's encouragement is the source of her drive rather than just another inspiration. Precious uses each track triumph as an opportunity to pay appreciation to her mother's dedication.
“I want to compete on the international
This year’s intramurals, Seniorfest, was welcomed by thronged senior high school students with their joy and laughter engulfing the halls of Filamer The first day of said event branched off experiences and respective teams’ cheers supporting their candidates leaving a life-lasting mark on everyone’s memories.
In an attempt to make it to the top, players from different banners grappled in cutthroat sports. Some players exerted their all efforts to advance to the next round but to no avail – prompting sadness and even their teammates went ballistic impelling them to leave such derogatory remarks and even actions with the intent to mock their opponents, thereby, eroding the bowels of sportsmanship.
Though those acts were deemed a commonplace in fields, it should not be condoned as those not only incur offense, but those invalidate the sweats and tears the winners have shed. In face of defeat, we must learn to regulate the negative emotions our heart is stirring; our sadness should not be projected to those triumphant especially if we are fully aware that the game was played fair-and-square.
Sports were there not to merely serve as a form of entertainment for both audience and players but it runs beyond that – it aims to instill the concept of sportsmanship which has been viewed, most if not all of the times, as a respect to the players and rules implemented, but to also inculcate the idea of losing as a mini-milestone to success in the future.
Be it borne that the scoreboard is not the final verdict of one’s capability because at the end of the game, it must be the sportsmanship that should be upheld, not our egos which we felt trampled on as we lost the battle, should be uplifted.
Beyond the scoreboard, Seniorfest isn’t just about winning - it is about character. True sportsmanship means respecting the game, your opponents, the technical team, your coach and yourself, regardless of the outcome. Victory fades, but how we treat each other on and off the field lasts forever. Let’s commit to uplifting one another and making sportsmanship the real victory we all share.

stage,” Precious stated, describing her ambition for the near future. “That's not where my dream ends, though. The next generation of athletes, especially the young ones who are just starting, is someone else I want to provide possibilities for. I want to start child-friendly running groups where ambitious athletes can congregate, nurture, and acquire experience.”
Bernabe recognizes greater potential in sports than just taking home victory. It's about instilling future talent and reciprocating favors to the community that has helped her. She feels that participating in sports, especially running, may provide a platform for personal development, stress release, and self-expression skills that have shaped her into the athlete she is today.
Did you know that the concept of intramural sports dates back to the early 1900s? The first official intramural program was introduced at the University of Michigan in 1913, with the goal of encouraging physical fitness and friendly competition among students. Intramurals provide a way for people of all skill levels to participate in sports, fostering a sense of community and teamwork!
