Happy St Patrick’s Day 3

Smooth and Wirehaired Fox Terriers: What’s Good About ‘Em, What’s Bad About ‘Em The Fox Terrier is one of the most curious, intense, and impulsive of the terriers -- indeed of all breeds. Untiringly active and playful, he has a special passion for ball chasing -- which really helps with exercise -- and he seldom walks when he can run. 4

T

he Fox Terrier loves the outdoors but must always be kept onleash (he is a fast, agile, independent chaser) or in a secure yard, preferably supervised, because his ingenuity and relentless hunting instincts may drive him over or under the fence. This daredevil with the peppery personality does best with active owners who are firm, confident, consistent leaders. He has a marked stubborn streak, a mischievous sense of humour, and will take clever advantage if indulged.

Fox Terriers are scrappy and fearless with other animals. They won’t back down if challenged, and they may do much of the challenging themselves. They have a high prey drive and extremely quick reflexes, so little creatures that run won’t get far. This breed has keen vision and acute hearing and can be counted on to sound the alert when anything is amiss -sometimes even when nothing is amiss, but might be in the future!

Regular brushing and clipping (Wire coat)

Fox Terriers love to tunnel and dig and can be possessive of their food and cherished toys.

A Smooth or Wirehaired Fox Terrier may not be right for you. Keep in mind that the inheritance of temperament is less predictable than the inheritance of physical traits such as size or shedding. Temperament and behavior are also shaped by raising and training. You can avoid some negative traits by choosing an ADULT dog from an animal shelter or rescue group. With an adult dog, you can easily see what you’re getting,

words are used over and over -- quick to bark, quick to chase, lively, bossy, feisty, scrappy, clever, independent, stubborn, persistent, impulsive, intense. Smooth and Wirehaired Fox Terriers are active go-getters. A walk around the block is not enough. They need regular opportunities to vent their energy and to use their busy minds to do interesting things.

2. Potential animal aggression. Fox Terriers are a determined force to reckon with if they decide to initiate or accept a challenge to fight. Most

4. Potential barking. Smooth and Wirehaired Fox Terriers are often too quick to sound the alarm at every new sight and sound. You have to be equally quick to stop them. If you work all day and have close neighbours, terriers are not the best choice for you. For the same reason, terriers should never be left outside in your yard, unsupervised. To make matters worse, some terriers have high-pitched barks that can set your teeth on edge.

5. Mind of their own. Fox Terriers, though more amenable to training than many other terriers, must be taught at an early age that they are not the rulers of the world. The toughness that makes them suited to killing vermin can frustrate you when you try to teach them anything. Fox Terriers can be stubborn and dominant (they want to be the boss) and will make you prove that you can make them do things. You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say. 6. Defensive reactions. If you need to physically chastise a terrier, and you go beyond what THEY believe is a fair correction, terriers (as a group) are more likely than other breeds to growl or snap. I do not recommend terriers for homes with small children. Many terriers will not tolerate any nonsense from little life forms whom they consider to be below themselves in importance. Many terriers are quick to react to teasing, and even to the normal clumsiness that comes with small children (accidental squeezing of their ears or pulling of whiskers or stepping on their paw). Many terriers are possessive of their food and toys and will defend these from all comers, including children.

7. Shedding. The Wire Fox Terrier sheds lightly, while Smooth Fox Terriers shed much more than you might think! The short hairs come off on your hands when you pet them, and stick tenaciously to your clothing and furnishings. 8. Grooming. The Wire coat needs much more care: clipping and trimming every few months. Breed purists may say that terrier coats should never be clipped because it makes the coat softer and more prone to matting. Instead they advocate handstripping (each dead hair pulled out so a new one can grow in its place). But in my opinion, stripping is too timeconsuming and uncomfortable for the dog. Many groomers will not do it anymore. For pet dogs, I think clipping is just fine. Obviously, Smooth Fox Terriers don’t need trimming, but you should brush them frequently when they’re shedding, because hairs that end up in the brush don’t end up on your clothes and furniture!

Rights vs. Responsibilities With so much weight being given to rights these days, it’s easy to forget that there’s another side to the equation. Human rights. We hear about them constantly these days, often in a global context. Yet according to Eleanor Roosevelt, they begin “in small places, close to home—so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world.”

International Labor Organization.

She went on to say in her 1948 address before the UN Commission on Human Rights that “they are the world of the individual person; the neighbourhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere.”

Yet it never seems enough, and so the laws continue to roll out like ripples in a pond, ever wider in scope. The U.K. Human Rights Act, for instance, incorporated the earlier European Convention on Human Rights into British law in late 2000. About two months later, the Charter of Fundamental Rights was adopted at the European Council meeting in Nice. Already weighing in on rights issues were the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, the latter of which is based on the European Convention on Human Rights.

The UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, now 60 years old, was not the first attempt to legislate human rights on an international scale. The post–World War I League of Nations Covenant required members to “endeavour to secure and maintain fair and humane conditions of labour for men, women, and children,” “secure just treatment of the native inhabitants of territories under their control,” and “take steps in matters of international concern for the prevention and control of disease.” Out of these provisions grew the work of the UN’s

Since 1948, much has been said and written about human rights, and organizations such as Amnesty International have worked tirelessly to combat flagrant violations.

RIGHT OR WRONG? Legally, rights have never been so extensively defined for so many: the rights of ethnic minorities, the rights of women, the rights of children, the rights of single parents, and the rights of homosexuals and lesbians. The right to claim compensation when your rights are violated. The rights of workers, of consumers and of the “unwaged.” The rights of companies and

9

organizations. The rights of animals and the rights of plants. It’s a list seemingly without end. The prosperous nations of the Western world have never been more focused on rights. Many people would therefore say we’ve come a long way since the UN’s Universal Declaration. But have we? Could this focus on rights have some adverse effects? Consider the litigious and predatory legal systems of the Western world, with the United States leading the way. And the sclerotic labor rights in European nations such as France and Germany are anything but an undisputed victory for the community at large. Is the obsession with rights creating a better society? Surely we should all be happier by now. But society is increasingly self-centered and dangerous, and happiness for many is more elusive than ever.

WHO’S RIGHT ABOUT WHOSE RIGHTS? The value of certain human rights seems self-evident: the rights of people not to be tortured or abused, freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom of political association.

should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” ARTICLE 1, UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS, 1948 But what happens when perceived rights conflict with one another? Rights are often in the eye of the beholder, with some of them clearly demonstrating a perplexing and perhaps even contradictory side. As just one example, take the now almost unquestioned right to freely cohabit without a commitment to the formality of conventional marriage. The statistics are now clear and undeniable: cohabitation is far more likely to lead to outcomes such as single parenthood, deprived childhood and dependence on welfare. Single parenthood is itself increasingly a lifestyle choice, but with the same outcome: greater dependence on welfare. And it is the traditional two-parent families and those on middle incomes who bear the brunt of the tax bill. Take another, even more controversial clash of rights: the rights of individuals to live homosexual lifestyles on the one hand, and the rights of some in religious faiths such as Christianity and Islam to believe and teach that homosexual acts are sin on the other. These rights have increasingly come into conflict in such areas as ordination, definitions of marriage, and what children are taught or not taught in faith-based schools.

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed Perhaps the most publicized clash is between those who fight for the right of women to with reason and terminate an unwanted pregnancy and those who fight for the right of the unborn to live. conscience and In no way can the rights of both groups 10

be protected. On what basis can we seek resolution when the perceived rights of two individuals or groups violate one another?

THAT OTHER

R

One can’t help but conclude that rights require a context, a framework, to be meaningful and workable. So what about that other R, responsibility?

“Strengthening rights is dependent on strengthening the connections, conceptually and behaviorally, between rights and responsibilities.” ARTHUR J. DYCK, RETHINKING RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: THE MORAL BONDS OF COMMUNITY (2005) It’s not that a relationship between these two words is not understood; just search the phrase “rights and responsibilities” on the Internet and you will get well over a million results to scroll through. Dig deeper, however, and you’ll realize how superficial and circular the definitions of “responsibilities” generally are. Most of them are limited to the responsibility to allow others the same rights that we expect for ourselves. In other words, others’ rights are

dressed up as our responsibilities. Of course, it would be hypocritical not to allow others the same rights we expect for ourselves, but is that all there is to responsibility? Is that enough to avoid or resolve conflicts of the sort just described, or does the foundation on which rights exist lie deeper still? As laws, proclamations and politically correct pressure groups rain supposed rights on ever more narrowly defined and exclusive groups and causes, it is a sure sign that we are forgetting how the very freedoms we take for granted were preserved through the centuries; namely, by the responsibility and self-sacrifice of our predecessors. Nobody said it better, from a national perspective, than John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” Have self-fulfillment and political correctness replaced that deeper, lasting set of values that overarches and simultaneously underpins individual rights? Apart from a few brave and increasingly lonely voices, it appears that even many of our religious and governmental institutions are abandoning, indeed sometimes uprooting, the moral underpinnings of society that were once considered every person’s solemn duty to uphold. The warning voices that do sound forth are usually not those of killjoys wanting to make life miserable for the sake of it, but of those who foresee, and warn about, the damaging outcomes of our self-indulgence.

“Converging with the language of psychotherapy, rights talk encourages 11

our all-toohuman tendency to place the self at the center of our moral universe.” MARY ANN GLENDON, RIGHTS TALK: THE IMPOVERISHMENT OF POLITICAL DISCOURSE (1991) British writer and philosopher Anthony O’Hear has demonstrated significant insight into where our pursuit of rights without corresponding responsibilities has taken us. “Could it be,” he asked in his book After Progress, “that the type of material and political progress on which we pride ourselves is actually the cause of spiritual and aesthetic decline? . . . Could the root cause of our discontents be lack of inner resources, rather than higher expectations of life?” O’Hear puzzles that the nation that produced such great artists as Turner and Constable should now put animal corpses and images of human excrement on display as art, presumably because of the right to free expression. He reflected on “the obsessive harping on happiness in a material sense, which makes our life today so mediocre in so many ways, which forgets that what is really worthwhile can be achieved

12

only through struggle and suffering, that there are aims in life higher than the elimination of pain and the cultivation of pleasure.” Again a particular right seems to be at the root of the problem—this time the right to achieve material happiness.

Sexual grooming of children – what parents need to know

A

t any point in time, when the issue and reality of sexual abuse matters are discussed, we humans naturally feel uncomfortable and almost feel like we are suffocating with fear and anger. The newspapers, magazines, television, radio and social media platforms are bombarded with stories about violated children, including babies and children with disabilities, who cannot defend themselves. Unfortunately, when we look at the outcome of many cases, we recognise how sexual abuse are not always just a once-off event, but in fact a series of events. Sexual abuse perpetrators create a build-up before going into the actual sexual act, and that build-up is defined as sexual grooming.

by: Yolandi Singleton South Africa, amongst other countries, have legislation namely the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007 where the reality of sexual grooming is covered in its own section (Section 18 in the Act). In a nutshell, grooming is described as the actions committed by the perpetrator to soften, prepare and reduce any form of unwillingness and resistance of the child with the specific intention to commit acts of sexual abuse. Perpetrators therefore work strategically before moving over to touching or committing any form of other inappropriate sexual act such as showing the child pornographic material or getting the child on board to appear naked in photos. Child sexual abusers are extremely

15

manipulative and know the importance of first building trust with the child and therefore work hard at winning the child over, to eventually allow the perpetrator voluntarily into their world. Winning the child’s parents over forms part of their strategy, as they intend to isolate the child from their parents, without the parents worrying about them. Some perpetrators attempt to convince the child that their parents do not love and care for them in order to persuade the child to rather put their trust in them.

adult supervision. Therefore, always ensure that your child is never left unsupervised. Single parents are unfortunately a great target in this regard. Advice your children to not place themselves in situations where they are unnecessarily alone with any adult, especially when that adult regularly attempts to encourage isolation.

When we work with children who have been sexually abused, we have picked up a pattern that these child victims tend to be children who struggle Perpetrators also intend to ensure with a low self-esteem and lack of secrecy between themselves and confidence. feel like they belong in the manner in which they approach the child with love, favours, acknowledgement and special attention, something which many children crave from their parents. Therefore, remind your child that if they observe an adult favouring them before a bunch of other children, such as only giving them a gift and not to the other children, they should be cautious and inform you as the parent to monitor the situation. Open communication and trust between a parent and child therefore limits a child to meet the criteria that a perpetrator looks for.

always maintain an open line of communication with your children and also take control over their online communication as perpetrators make use of this medium. A parent can for example install security settings and passwords on their devices, before handing over the device to their child. Educate your child on the risk factors and responsibility they have that accompanies the fun of having an electronic device. Lastly, should you get confronted with the possibility of grooming on part of your child, seek guidance from a professional who specialise in the field of sexual abuse.

It is therefore encouraged to talk openly to your children about the All the best and stay safe! reality of people trying to engage with them in inappropriate ways. Encourage your children to rather talk to you when something or someone makes them feel uncomfortable so that you can, together, work out a plan of action. If a child brings some information of concern to you, always let your child know that you believe them and will choose their side and not get angry at them. Research shows that children are less likely to make false accusations against a perpetrator. It is however true, that grooming is a difficult aspect to identify, therefore

THE RED HEADED FINCH

Also known as the paradise finch, the Aberdeen finch or the red headed weaver for some reason, the Red Headed Finch (Amadina erythrocephala) is one of two members of the Amadina family of Estrildid finches with the Cut throat. The natural habitat of these birds is across parts of southern Africa including Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. It tends to live on dry savannah areas and is a ground feeder, sharing territory with other birds and visiting the same watering holes. They are also seen around farmland and farm yards across their habitat area. Their diet is based on grass seeds and they will also eat insects such as termites when available.

18

One of the first points in favour of keeping the red headed finch is

that the species is sexually dimorphic – in other words, the male and female birds are visually different. So, there are no tricky problems getting a pair! Both birds have striped body feathers with light brown backs and white markings while the wings and tail have black edges. The distinctive red head is only found on male birds while the female has a light brown head.

The birds are larger than their cousins the Cut throats and are similar in size to a Java Finch. This larger size does mean they need a good-sized cage or flight to call their home. There seems to be mixed opinions about keeping them with other finches – some people recommend keeping them with similar sized birds while other say they are fine in a mixed aviary of all finch sizes. They can cross breed with the Cut throats so it is worth keeping them separate – hybrids can be fertile but obviously, purity of species is most desirable. In terms of diet, they will be happy with a good foreign finch mix but breeders also recommend offering some larger seeds such as larger millets found in parakeet mixes. Egg food is best offered and they will take live food such as mealworms and waxworms although they are not essentials for breeding. Grit, cuttlefish, iodine or other calcium sources should be available and they will enjoy millet spray and soaked or sprouted seeds. They are known to be prone to calcium and Vitamin D3 deficiencies so make sure you use supplements if not receiving in their food – these can lead to egg-binding.

and coconut fibres. Larger finch nesting boxes are recommended due to their size and they will often line the nest with white feathers. Typically, the female lays 4-8 eggs and the larger size is why they suffer problems with egg binding. Both birds will incubate after the second to fourth egg is laid and they incubate for around two weeks. Chicks are black and have a downy fuzz with a large, gaping mouth with yellowwhite flanges. They fledge at around three weeks and take about the same period of time to wean. Young males will be visible early on with red feathers coming through on their heads. If needed, Bengalese can be used to rear young if they have been abandoned and are in danger. But because the begging behaviour and look of the chick is very different, the best results come from Bengalese who haven’t yet reared their own young – otherwise they might realise that these aren’t their chicks!

Breeders say that these birds can be quick to nest but also quick to abandon so nest inspections are not recommended. They will often use nesting boxes with as little as some sawdust in them while other birds weave elaborate nests with grasses

Life is a Garden

Family Fun in the Garden:

How to make a bee hotel for the friendly solitary bee There are many different types of bees, and the solitary bee is probably the friendliest helper in the garden. They’re different to honey bees although they look so similar you might not notice a difference. Solitary bees don’t build a hive, they live alone. They’re great helpers in the garden because they help to pollinate flowers and they don’t sting. Their favourite place to nest is in little holes, they bring pollen and nectar to their young to feed them. Making a bee hotel is a wonderful way to keep children busy in the garden, and this is a fun way to help them do it, while explaining the importance of having bees in the garden. Encourage them, daily, to go and check if there are any bees using the hotel - they’ll love seeing their ‘hotel’ being inhabited! What you will need to build a bee hotel: - 7 pieces of marine plywood (to make a box 15cm in depth, 20x30cm width and height), drilled together, or pinned together with panel pins

- Some clay and paint to make a bee (optional) - Duct tape for the roof - Hinges and screws - Sign for bee hotel/rates

How to build a bee hotel for your friendly garden pollinators Step one: Building the box Using the panel pins, secure the panels together to form a box shape. Remember to leave two panels for the roof. It is best to have one set of hands holding everything steady and the other set of hands doing the hammering. Step two: Making the roof Angle the pieces of wood for the roof, in an A-frame shape and use the duct tape to keep the two pieces together. Use two pieces of duct tape, if necessary. Secure the A-frame shaped roof to the box with some more duct tape for a temporary fix, or screw in some hinges. Step three: Creating hotel “rooms” for the bees

- Small logs

Cut pieces of wood and bamboo to the same depth as the box. If you sourced - Any offcuts of wood bamboo from bamboo cane fencing, - Bamboo canes (try get bamboo cane remove the bamboo canes from the wire fencing from garden centre, and pull it fencing. Drill holes of different depths and thicknesses into the logs and wood apart) pieces (anything between 2mm and - Plant to mention: Marigolds, gazania, 10mm drill bit will work). Ensure the lavender, salvia, plectranthus, holes are smooth and clean - remove any Hibiscus, osteospermum, alyssum, sharp pieces left behind and sand and portulaca it down lightly. Fill the box with

25

the wood and bamboo pieces that have been drilled and cut to size - make sure they’re evenly distributed, well compacted and secure. Step four: Location, location, location!

Place the hotel in a sunny spot in the garden, on a southern-facing wall, 1m above the ground. Solitary bees love having a variety of flowers to choose from, so plants lots of marigolds, gazania, lavender, salvia, plectranthus, hibiscus, osteospermum, alyssum, and portulaca near the area. Not only are you feeding bees, you’re adding colour and delight to your garden. You can add a few homely touches to your hotel - make a clay bee, paint it, paint the roof red if you like make a sign with your hotel’s name (“Daniel’s Bee Hotel”, for example).

You’ll see your bee hotel being used if there are little mud tunnels or door over the openings d into the wood and bamboo. Be sure not to disturb the bees and their nests because that’s whe they keep their babies and their eggs.

gave cheers of proud support when the results were announced in Assembly.

With 1 mile being equivalent to 1.6km, Mrs Albertyn got in the most exercise and swam 8 miles (12.8km) over the course of the weekend. Mrs Albertyn and her family took part in the family race (4 miles) on Saturday, to raise funds for the Pink Drive, and won that category for the 4th time! She also took part in the main race on Sunday (4 miles) in the 41 - 50 age group, and placed 1st out of 270 competitors.

h School for Girls Ms Dorlas, who has participated in 26 Midmars over the years, took an incredible 5th place overall out of 152 competitors in the main race on Sunday in the 51-60 age group, proving she will always have what it takes. Mrs Russell also braved the waters on Sunday in the 40 – 50 age group and Ms Austin took part on Sunday in the 31 – 40 age group. Mr Oertel and one of the Water Polo coaches, Coach Batsi, also swam after submitting a last minute entry to keep a promise to learners. A deal was made with the Water Polo players, promising that if the players finished 2 places higher than they had the previous year at the Aquatics Festival, Mr Oertel and Coach Basti would enter the Midmar Mile. Of course, the Water Polo girls then took it upon themselves to ensure they would finish 2 places higher, which they did.

Teachers’ Awards PHSG is exceptionally proud of our teachers. We have always boasted that we have great teachers and over the last couple of months, our staff have been receiving awards to prove it.

Love is in the Hall at the Valentines’ Day Concert By Malaika Miteo (Grade 9) and Jasmine Beeforth (Grade 9) On 14 February, the school’s annual Valentine’s Day Concert was held in the school hall.  The evening was opened by Katinka Sik and Elke du Toit. Before the concert began, Elke read a poem Beauty is Love. The orchestra and the ensembles, such as the cello, guitar, string, saxophone and flute ensembles, made it a night to enjoy. The concert kicked off with an upbeat rendition of Let’s Get Loud! performed by the school orchestra. What really made the night a night worth remembering was that our very own guitar ensemble played the slightly more improved version of Despacito with dancers and guitarists. (Click here to see the video.) Pretoria Boys High School honoured us with their wonderful gumboot performance and our ballet dancers graced the stage with delicate dancing. Rhythmony, as well as the senior choir, serenaded us with their beautiful voices. The senior marimba, aka Hotstix, performed songs which made audience members jive in their seats. Our school choir made our heartstrings reverberate with Billy Joel’s And So It Goes, An Irish Blessing and the heart-rending, A la Rurro Niño. A magical evening was concluded by the orchestra playing Shallow and their own version of An 80s Medley.

The Grade 8 Commencement Ceremony By Maia Loots (Grade 8) and Ashleigh Lingenfelder (Grade 8)

On 31 January, the new Grade 8 group was welcomed to Pretoria High School for Girls. After a long wait, the new girls filed in with their Form Teachers led by Ms Dorlas and Ms Jelley (both Old Girls of the school). The girls stood proudly and sang the School Song which had been practised to perfection. The Guest Speaker was Ms Anelich, also an Old Girl, who explained which traits she acquired here, which has aided her in her success thus far. This motivational speech was preceded by the Choir’s moving rendition of a traditional Xhosa work entitled Sesivuma Sigiya Ngalengoma which lauds Nelson Mandela. When the Grade 8s exited, they were handed their shiny new house badges. This was followed by tea, juice and shortbread cookies in the Quads. Welcome, Grade 8s!

Life is a Garden

March in the Garden Early autumn is like an alternative spring and March is actually the best month to plant new trees and shrubs. It’s logical - whatever you plant in this temperate month, will have the whole autumn and winter to establish before bursting into new growth in spring, which removes the possibility of the plants having to deal with replanting shock. So, get to it get in the garden!

New exciting

‘Himba’ - purp prominent yel green foliage growth habit.

‘Ashanti’ - tigh lavender-pink darker crown flower.

Trendy planting... Be part of changing the face of gardening by planting trialed and tested, hardy plants which need less water. These are in stock at your local GCA Garden Centre. - Social garlic - The hardy and easy-to-grow social or wild garlic (Tulbaghia violacea) has always been a popular indigenous perennial. Grown for its bountiful mauve flower clusters on tall stems, its greyish-green strap-like leaves emit a garlicky odor. Flowers, leaves and stems are edible and can be used for their flavour, as well as garnish. Wild garlic has traditionally been used as a medicinal plant, and is also planted to deter snakes and aphids. It is a water wise plant to include in the herb garden, or to be used in mass as border plants.

Medium to low water usage in the garden, but will need a little more in pots. National Plant a Flower Day 2019 Folks in the Northern hemisphere plant a flower on this day (12 March) in the hope that their spring will arrive soon. South Africans enjoying a balmy, early autumn and sun for months to come, will go all out with the Salvia Heatwave series - compact salvias guaranteed to add heart-warming colour in hot, and dry climates. You will enjoy lots of flowers for minimal water, minimal feeding, and minimal pruning! Rose care for March Build healthy leaves by fertilising with a rose fertiliser this month. It alleviates some digestive discomfort. Animals like dogs have an instinctive herbal knowledge, but probably don’t know the difference between kikuyu or other grass types, and safe dog grass (Agrospyron canina). At the herbs stand in your local GCA Garden Centre, you will find dog (and cat) grass. Plant up a patch of it for your dog to munch on. JAVANESE The Javanese is highly intelligent, agile and athletic, and loves to play. Life Span:10 to 15 years The Siamese and the Javanese might differ in coat length and colour, but beneath the skin they are identical. Javanese are extremely fond of their people. They like to be “helpful” and will follow you around and supervise your every move. When you are sitting down, a Javanese will be on your lap, and at night he will be in bed with you, probably under the covers with his head on the pillow. He is frequently underfoot, so he might not be the best choice for people who are unsteady on their feet or use a walker or cane.

He is also a good trainer himself and may be running your household before you know it. Never leave him without any form of entertainment, or you will likely come home to find that he has reprogrammed your DVR to record only nature shows or at the very least decided that your toilet paper rolls and tissue boxes look better empty. Do not get a Javanese if living with a chatty busybody would drive you insane. On the other hand, if you enjoy having someone to talk to throughout the day, the Javanese can be your best friend. Just be sure you have time to spend with this demanding and social cat. Javanese don’t mind staying home during the day while you go off to earn money to buy cat food, but they will expect you to devote time to them when you are at home. It can be smart to get two of them so they can keep each other company.

A Javanese is perhaps not quite as loud as his relative the Siamese, but he is most definitely just as opinionated. He will tell you exactly what he thinks, and he expects you to pay attention and act on his advice. You can also count on him to “tell all” to visitors, so be grateful that most Choose a Javanese if you look forward people are not conversant in the to spending time with and interacting with your cat. Never Tell Lisa Gardner At first, it seems an ordinary house in an upscale part of Boston. Lawn, white picket fence, car out front, front door opened just a crack... Inside a man lies dead. Crimson splatters over the walls, pools on the floor. And on the stairs, a young woman waits. Covered in blood, she is holding a gun. An open-and shut-case, Detective DD Warren thinks when she arrives at the house, particularly as when she last saw the suspect Evie, she had just shot her own father. That time the killing had been an accident. This time it seems horribly intentional. But is it? Killer or victim? Detective DD Warren must race to find out what has really been going on behind closed doors…
