that can be deadly. Although herding sheep or cows requires special skills, herding reindeer takes other distinct skills that are inherent in Lappies. The breed is quick, brave, and agile, with a strong startle reflex that served them well if a reindeer suddenly turned on them. 4. Another trait crucial to this herding dog is a tendency to bark. Finnish Lapphunds used barking to control the herd, and they are still barkers today. On the one hand, this makes them very good watchdogs that will let you know if someone’s coming. On the other hand, teaching your Lappie when it’s OK to bark and when it isn’t is an important part of training. 5. The Finnish Lapphund is sometimes referred to as a “thinking breed.” Although, as with most herders, they can be strong-willed, Lappies take to training and do well in dog sports, like agility and rally. They also perform well as tracking dogs, therapy dogs, and in search and rescue. 6. The Lappie is not a guard dog. He’ll alert you to the presence of strangers, but he’s not aggressive. In fact, he’s a devoted, sociable and good-natured breed. 7. Despite similarities in appearance to the Australian Shepherd, Samoyed, and Siberian Husky, he’s his own breed. He is calm, friendly, and attached to his human pack, yet with the intelligence, quickness, and courage of a dog used to working in tough Northern conditions. It’s no wonder the breed is becoming such a favourite! Interested in adding one of these agile, alert, and friendly dogs to your family?

The Power Of Love Written by: Yolandi Singleton (Supervisor: Assessments and Therapy Unit)
“Love, love changes everything” … a song
8
written by the famous and well-known songwriter Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Charles Hart and Don Black in the ’90s, clearly captures every human being’s biggest need, namely the need for love. The song takes you on a journey of what love is all about, the good and the bad of it. In one verse it says, “Brings you glory, brings you shame” and “Love makes fools of everyone” and then further-on points out again how love can restore you, “Love will never, never let you be the same”. Over many years, love has been the main theme of many movies. This counts for songs as well. The theme of love still sells movies, music albums, theatre shows and other entertainment, simply it is what

That is really when children experience that their parents spend quality time with them in their world. When we conduct assessments with children we often find children saying that their parents do not play along with them. However, when we discuss this with the parents afterwards, they are surprised by this statement, explaining that they often do a specific activity together. When we then ask the parents who initiated the activity, the parents are eager to admit it was them. We then encourage them to rather ask the child what they would like to do for fun and explain that children perceive this as love. We all have a perception of what love means and it is related to your experience of the actions by your near and dear. Your children will, therefore, internalise your actions of love, which will eventually become their default way of showing love to others as well. When considering that children will not remain children and that we raise them to become successful and well-functioning adults, we know that they will interact with many other people in different situations when they are grown-ups. 10 Romantic Dinner Ideas, That Any Guy Can Make
Cooking dinner for a woman is one of the easiest (and when done right, cheapest) ways to impress a woman.
However, if you don’t cook all the time or are used to fast and easy meals, it can feel overwhelming to plan a romatic meal. But it doesn’t have to be — and in fact, with the right preparation, you can serve up a five-star meal using very little effort. The key is to pick the right recipes. So today, I’m going to show you 10 failsafe recipes that any guy can make for a romantic meal in. These recipes are tried & tested, and work for any and every palate. Feeling hungry yet?
12
Let’s dive in.
1) Roast Chicken & Vegetables
This recipe comes from a classic Italian restaurant in Brooklyn, and the raisins This dinner is a classic and is universally and the pine nuts really make the appealing — given that she’s not a meatballs a standout star. vegetarian or vegan, of course. Plus, you can customize it to your (or your date’s) palate. Are you a fan of the classics? Try a roast chicken with lemon and rosemary. Want to try something more interesting? Go for a Moroccan spin with preserved lemons, dried apricots and olives. This recipe provides an excellent template to get you started. With just a few simple ingredients and a couple hours, you’ll have a delicious meal and a very happy date.
3) Asparagus Risotto
Risotto gets a bad rap for being timeconsuming and labour-intensive, but with a few simple hacks, it’s really very simple. This is also a great option if your date is vegetarian — rather than serve her a boring plate of roasted vegetables, this asparagus risotto is composed, balanced, and still light enough not to feel like you’ll enter a food coma afterwards.
2) Spaghetti & Meatballs
Not a fan of mushrooms? Leave them out! Even plain risotto served with It might be cliche, but it’s a classic for a grated parmesan and a drizzle of olive reason — the Lady and the Tramp were oil on top can be a really impressive onto something with their romantic date night dinner. spaghetti and meatball dinner. Serve this with a nice chilled white Meatballs are another dish that wine, like a Sancerre or an unoaked might sound like a “project,” but the Chardonnay, and you’ll be sure to reality is that they only have to be “wow” her (in more ways than one). as complicated as you want to make them. Get some ground beef, add in 4) Chili Garlic Shrimp & Rice some spices, an egg or two and some It’s often said that spicy food and breadcrumbs — don’t forget the salt seafood are aphrodisiacs, so get the and pepper. conversation starter.
5) Pesto With Peas & Orecchiette If spaghetti and meatballs aren’t your jam or your date is vegetarian, then this refreshing and light pasta dish is a great choice for you. The trick is to splurge on a nice bottle of olive oil — look for something that reads “DOP” on the bottle. (It’s a sign of high quality.) Also, keep in mind that younger olive oils tend to be spicier, so if you want a smoother flavour balance then perhaps an aged olive oil is best for you. Beyond that, putting everything together is a breeze — you can even buy the canned pesto if you don’t have time to make your own. This recipe calls for bowtie and fusilli pasta, but I’d actually recommend orecchiette. It’s not an “everyday” kind of pasta and has pockets to absorb the delicious sauce, so it’ll feel like a real treat for her.
6) Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad I know, I know — a salad doesn’t exactly scream “romantic date night.” But this is no ordinary salad. Grilling the lettuce adds an extra dimension of flavour to this that will really make it stand out. Plus, the homemade dressing gives it an extra “oomph” that definitely will not go unnoticed. Because this is relatively light as far as dinners go, make sure to plan something nice for dessert as well. Some chocolates from a local bakery or fresh fruit with homemade whipped cream are both excellent options.
7) Boeuf Bourguignon Boeuf Bourguignon is basically French for “beef stew.” Really, really delicious beef stew.

Collared Sunbird
16
Hedydipna Collaris This tiny sunbird differs from other local members of the family in that its bill is short and only slightly decurved, and the female is almost as brightly coloured as the male. Restricted to the warmer eastern and northern parts of southern Africa, it occurs in thorny savannah, coastal forest and valley thicket and is a familiar garden bird in East London, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Nelspruit. Usually seen foraging in pairs or within a mixed feeding group. They take far more insects and spiders than other sunbirds do, its shorter bill being ideal for gleaning aphids and ants and snapping up flies and small moths. Relishes the nectar of Aloe, Albizia, Combretum, Burchellia, Halleria and Strelitzia and will ‘steal/nectar from Sausage Tree Kigelia Africana and other large bell-shaped flowers by piercing the back of the flower. Pairs defend a territory vigorously, often ‘boxing’ their own reflections in windows and many enter houses to take on ‘rivals’ at mirrors! The male gives a bowing courtship display, hopping back and forth on a branch as his mate watches. The female builds a small oval nest using dry stems, leaves and bark strips and lines it with fluffy plant down. The nest is attached to a twig out in the open, often close to a building or active paper wasps’ nest, which acts as a deterrent to predators. The female incubates 2 to 3 eggs for 14 days, and the chick fledge after a further 14 days. May be parasitized by Klaas’s Cuckoo.

South Korea Valentine’s Day is a popular holiday for young couples in South Korea, and variations of the holiday are celebrated monthly from February through April. The gift-giving starts on February 14th, when it’s up to women to woo their men with chocolates, candies and flowers. The tables turn on March 14th, a holiday known as White Day, when men not only shower their sweethearts with chocolates and flowers but up the ante with a gift. And for those who don’t have much to celebrate on either Valentine’s Day or White Day, there is a third holiday: Black Day. On April 14th, it’s customary for singles to mourn their solitary status by eating dark bowls of jajangmyeon, or black bean-paste noodles.

The book immediately became controversial. Its implications for the traditional Christian view of creation were immense. It suggested that life had evolved over a far greater timespan than biblical accounts. It also suggested that humans were another form of animal life, rather than a divine creation. Darwin suffered from chronic illness all his life. There is still speculation about whether his symptoms were the type of nervous condition, relating to his concerns over the implications of his theories. Darwin continued to publish books about human and animal revolution. His theories became immensely influential within biological sciences. His theories were also applied to social questions. Others used his ideas in developing theories such as eugenics and sciences of racial difference. There is continued debate about the connections that can be drawn between Darwin’s own ideas and the uses to they were put by others.

Trending: Bro’s in the air Air plants have fascinating forms and they grow without soil, attached to virtually anything from pieces of wood to fishing line to suspend them from the air – you can even glue them onto different objects. Air plants are members of the genus Tillandsia which descends from the pineapple family. Many of them grow naturally on trees where they attach themselves on branches and can often be seen hanging from trees, like the mystical old man’s beard (Tillandsia usneoides). Contrary to popular belief, air plants actually do need moisture and nutrients to grow properly and do not live on air alone. Buy some of these beautiful and collectable plants and care for them by using a mist sprayer. You can even soak the whole plant for a few minutes, but allow it to dry off well before displaying it again. Do this regularly in very hot weather as air plants like humidity in the atmosphere. Place them in a sheltered spot away from direct sunlight and ensure that there is good air circulation around them. Get ready to plant the toughest! One of the questions most often asked in a nursery is, “what can I plant in my pot?”. Well, GCA nurseries all over have all the answers (and the plants!) to back this up. Late winter and spring bring a flash of tiny pink flowers to this plant. These flowers are a rich form of nectar for insects, which in turn ensures your garden will be filled with birds. Extremely drought tolerant, and easy to grow. The pork bush is also popular as a bonsai subject. Add some old-fashioned grace The highly decorative Fountain bush (Russelia equisetifolia), is a garden in itself, with its slender arching stems spilling out like a waterfall. Our favourite training techniques By Theo Pretorius
A
s trainers, we have a few favourites that are notorious for clients and serve a great purpose. Here we will go through some of my favourites, by no means are these the only ones these are just my preferences. The specificity of being a Home Personal Trainer means that we need to be innovative with our exercises, while still incorporating the basic tenets of training. All trainers face a variety of clients and client’s expectations and goals on a daily basis, so the below exercises are not for everyone but as always could be adapted for anyone. The dreaded TABATA is first and favourite. A favourite for so many reasons, so fast and effective and as tough as any tool we have. A TABATA is done over 4 minutes, with intervals of 20 seconds of exercise and 10 seconds rest. We say 20 seconds on a 10 off (20:10), so there are 8 intervals of 20 secs in your 4 minutes. Easy right? If it is easy for you then you are
36
welcome to make it a 50sec 10-sec ratio, but this is for the very serious! My personal favourites are either push-ups, burpees or squat to shoulder press for all 8 rounds. No variation just maximum effort with one exercise. Doing one exercise isn’t necessary though, you can do 2,4 or even 8 different exercises as you choose. A few examples are alternating between jump squats and jump lunges; a real killer, or doing these 4 together as box jumps, burpees, jump squats and deadlifts. The options are endless, the cardio is tough and it’s fun when you are done, obviously. TABATA is known to help you achieve your V02 max, which is basically your maximum training effort. This is a topic on its own for another day though. Here is an example of an upper body TABATA: push-ups, triceps dips, shoulder press, Burpee, bicep curls,
dumbbell clean to press, renegade rows, triceps kickback. Take these 8 exercises and repeat for 3 rounds, within 20 min you will be tired and done for the day. The second on our list: A pyramid, written in the shape of a pyramid always starting with the same exercise and adding one until you reach the top and then descending losing an exercise each time along the way. See below. Burpees8 Burpees8,PU12 Burpees8,PU12,Squat 10, Burpees8,PU12,Squat 10,high knees30sec Burpees8,PU12,Squat 10,high knees30sec, plank45sec Burpees8,PU12,Squat 10,high knees30sec, plank45sec, MCs 50 Burpees8,PU12,Squat 10,high knees30sec, plank45sec Burpees8,PU12,Squat 10,high knees30sec Burpees8,PU12,Squat 10 Burpees8,PU12, Burpees8 Here is an easy pyramid that should take about 30 min if you are moderately fit. Yes PU is push-ups, and yes 8 burpees are just enough to make a person tired but not kill that’s for sure. Again it’s so easy to manipulate this to make it tougher, longer or if you have to easier. Add reps, or change the exercises
as needed, typically 6 exercises ascending and descending will be enough for a session, fit and strong individuals can go for 7 or 8, but that is becoming more challenging and takes longer obviously depending on the specific exercises. This is a fast way to achieve maximum exertion while keeping control with a set start, peak and end to allow some semblance of sanity while suffering. You could always step it up a notch and follow the format below where a pyramid is broken into two, getting more work done for each exercise.
