he history and origins of Father’s Day can be traced back more than 4,000 years ago. In Babylon, a son called Elmesu carved a message to his father on a clay card. Elmesu wished his father a long and happy life. Though fathers have been revered through the centuries, the official recognition of Father’s Day only happened in the early 1900s. Several people are credited for furthering the cause of Father’s Day, but Ms.

Sonora Louise Smart Dodd is seen as the key person in making this great celebration happen. Sonora Dodd is seen as the Mother of the Father’s Day Festival. In 1909, Sonora overheard a Mother’s Day sermon, and begun to recognize the hardships that her father must have gone through while bringing up his family. When Sonora was 16, her mother died during childbirth, and left her father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, to raise his six
children and the newborn on his own. Sonora pondered the fact that there was a day for mothers, but not for fathers. Initially, many people laughed at her idea, but her mind was made up. She began a sincere campaign lobbying for the cause of Father’s Day, and finally, her efforts began to show. On June 19, 1909, along with the support of Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), the first Father’s Day was celebrated. Sonora wished for Father’s Day to be held on the day of her Fathers birthday, but due to time constraints, the celebration was held on the third Sunday in June. And that tradition has lasted throughout the times. Today, Father’s Day is celebrated over the world, and has become a popular festival. Children commonly gift their fathers with Father’s Day cards, and small gifts, such as neckties or other novelties. In South Africa, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June, which means that families get the opportunity to spend the day together. Many South Africans enjoy the day by going out for a picnic, fishing, or a meal in a restaurant. South Africans use Father’s Day as an opportunity to celebrate and to focus on the important role that Fathers play in nurturing children and building a stronger society.

Kerry Blue Terrier The Kerry Blue Terrier is the quintessential working dog. He hails from County Kerry, Ireland, where he was bred to hunt small game and birds, kill rodents, and herd sheep and cattle. Intelligent and brave, he became a cherished pet as well, displaying fierce devotion to his family or pack. While not a particularly well-known dog breed, the Kerry Blue enjoys a dedicated following of fanciers, thanks to his working abilities and loyal companionship. This working-class dog is definitely all terrier: alert, resourceful, muscular, and always ready for action. His defining characteristic, however, is his coat: blue, with a grey tint (though it doesn’t start out that way). Puppies are often born black, transitioning through dark blue, brown, grey, and combinations of these colours until they reach a mature blue-grey colour at about 18 months of age. His V-shaped ears, black nose, and the mop of hair that falls over his eyes further distinguish his look. The Kerry Blue Terrier is typically good-natured with people of all ages, including children. He is an excellent family dog who enjoys participating in all family activities and he is happiest when he is with those he
loves. He makes a good watchdog too, ready to warn his family of intruders or anything out of the ordinary. The Kerry Blue is not especially vocal, but when he barks, he sounds intimidating. The Kerry Blue is not especially goodnatured with other dogs. In fact, he is prone to dog aggression (fighting with other dogs), especially if he is intact. Early Kerry Blue Terriers were even more aggressive than those found today. Conscientious breeders have worked hard to retain the liveliness of the breed while toning down their natural inclination to aggression. Good breeding, combined with proper socialization (the process by which puppies or adults dogs learn how to be friendly and get along with other dogs and people) and training, helps prevent 7

as he is, the Kerry Blue does not get along well with others. He tends to fight with other dogs and chase small animals he perceives as prey. Temperament is affected by several factors, including heredity, training, and socialization. Puppies with nice temperaments are curious and playful, willing to approach people and be held by them. Choose the middle-of-the-road puppy, not the one who’s beating up his littermates or the one who’s hiding in the corner. Always meet at least one of the parents — usually the mother is the one who’s available — to ensure that they have nice temperaments that you’re comfortable with. Meeting siblings or other relatives of the parents is also helpful for evaluating what a puppy will be like when he grows up. Like every dog, the Kerry Blue needs early socialization — exposure to many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences — when they’re young. Socialization helps ensure that your Kerry Blue puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Enrolling him in a puppy kindergarten class is a great start. DAD – the superhero without a cape! Every father should remember that one day his child will follow his example, not his advice – Charles Kettering, Success.Com With Father’s Day on 16 June, we turn our attention to the men in our lives and the key part they play in the developmental phases of our children. Although many children grow up without a father in the 10
house, it is very important for a child to have a male role model that they can relate to. According to a blog by Ditta M Oliker, Ph.D., on Psychology Today (2011), the world has radically changed as we grew accustomed to the social, economic and technical advances of the 20th century. These changes also forced a change in the basic structure and functioning of the family, with a consequent shift in the authority of the father. His influence was increasingly seen as minor, even negligible, and his importance was defined by how well he provided for the family. She believes that the then-new field of psychology contributed to the diminished role of the father. Until then, not a lot of research was done on the importance on the role of the father, and his influence on the development and growth of his child was reported as “insignificant.” When referring to the term “parent”, reference
was often made to the mother and if the father was mentioned, was equivalent to other influences. Sadly, very little parentchild studies investigated the father’s role, and when studies reported on the father’s involvement it was as reported by the mother. In more than 2,000 parents who responded to questions about parenting in studies, not one father was interviewed. There was a general conception that men were not interested in fatherhood!
children also has an important impact on a child’s emotional and social development. Oliker claims that fathers spend a higher percentage of their one-to-one interactions with infants and preschoolers in stimulating, playful activity than do mothers. From these interactions, children learn how to regulate their feelings and behavior. Children with involved, caring fathers also have better educational outcomes. The influence of a father’s involvement extends into adolescence and young adulthood. Numerous studies find that an active and nurturing style of fathering is associated with better verbal skills, intellectual functioning, and academic achievement among adolescents. Unfortunately, no baby is issued with a script on how to raise this particular child and fathers (parents) make mistakes. We learn as they grow!
According to Oliker, the pendulum slowly began to swing back in the 1970s, when new studies started to support the impact of fathers. “That change influenced me as a graduate student at the time to risk doing my Ph.D. thesis on father-son interactions and how those interactions may actually be an important influencing factor in an adolescent son’s development. Fortunately for me, my study did find positive results of a father’s influence on What makes a good father, then? For the moral reasoning of an adolescent son, one, he needs to realize that children are allowing me to graduate on time”, she sent to our lives to make adults of grownwrote in her blog. ups! Because nothing will make you more Today the father is regarded as a very responsible, more aware of a secure future important person in the developmental and quality living than when you hold that phases of children and the impact a father little child for the first time. And nothing has on a child will have lasting results. matters more than the well-being of the From a report in “Fathers and Their Impact child. on Children’s Well-Being”: So, what makes a father? Accountable and admirable. Fathers are heroes – so many little girls want to marry men like their fathers and boys want to grow big and strong like their dads! The man in the house is admired by his wife and children because of the way he treats people, his example and the way he remains accountable for actions. Teacher and trustworthy. Fathers teach their children about life, about nature, about being human. By taking the little one along when you chop wood, go shopping, fishing or camping, you teach them about survival, negotiation, treating other people fairly and about spending time in nature. By showing up at the game when you promised to, by catching the child when he is jumping into a pool or by fixing a broken toy, you express that you are trustworthy.
will encourage you to believe in the future and new opportunities! Respected and role model. Children want to respect their fathers. And remember that your child also do not have a checklist of what you are supposed to do and be – as long as the relationship between father and child is based on mutual respect, understanding and accommodating the generation gap a child will grow up with the concept that the father is the role model to which he will aspire, the man she is proud to call dad!
Do not try to be the perfect father. Maybe just look at priorities again and see what in your schedule can be cancelled so you can make that all important first match, ballet concert or just an afternoon playing in the garden. Sometimes it will be something you need to fix physically but often by listening and giving advice you are also fixing. Fathers should be honest – children are more sensitive to lies than we give them credit for and therefore we should also trust our children and confide in them with honesty when possible. Encouragement. Fathers are the ones running up and down on the side of the field, urging the child on to do more, go faster. Most people are not aware of alcohol’s CANCER RISK. Drinking any type of alcoholic beverages (even in small amounts) increases the risk. What the Research says: » There’s strong evidence that alcohol causes cancers of the colon, rectum, breast, mouth, pharynx, larynx, liver and oesophagus. There’s also mounting evidence that heavy drinking might be linked to cancer of the pancreas (Cancer Research UK 2016)
How Alcohol Increases Cancer Risk » The increased risk may be related to two chemicals that can damage the DNA of healthy cells: » Ethanol, which is the primary part of alcoholic beverages » Acetaldehyde, which is made when alcohol is digested by the body » Alcohol may affect the breakdown of the hormone estrogen, which increases the amount of estrogen in the blood which is a risk factor for breast, ovarian, and uterine cancers. » Alcohol can cause weight gain, which also increases cancer risk

Tips to Be Aware & Lower Alcohol Intake » Decide ahead of time what your limit will be or how many drinks you will limit yourself to » Make your drink last by drinking slowly and try to avoid drinking rounds » Choose times or days in the week which you will keep as alcohol free and stick to it » Include / challenge your friends in your goals or your alcohol free days » Have a drink only with a meal and avoid drinking on an empty stomach » Choose lighter beers or spirits with less alcohol » Get creative with mixing drinks that allow you to reduce the alcohol content » Alternate your drink with water » Calculate how much money you will spend on alcohol
The Hidden Toll of Alcohol During June, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) reinforces the message of its 365 Day Health Campaign, that individuals have the power to lower cancer risk by making healthy lifestyle choices. Most people are not aware that drinking any type of alcohol (even in small amounts) increases the cancer risk. CANSA highlights the toll that alcohol takes on bodies and how it affects those around them. Elize Joubert, CANSA CEO, states, “Alcohol consumption is associated with significant public health and safety problems, including causing a number of cancers. In 1988 alcohol was declared a cancer causing agent to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and in 2007 and 2009, these findings were confirmed. There’s strong evidence that alcohol causes cancers of the colon, rectum, breast, mouth, pharynx, larynx, liver and oesophagus. And there’s also mounting evidence that heavy drinking might be linked to cancer of the pancreas (Cancer Research UK 2016). Furthermore evidence suggests that drinking alcohol causes stomach and breast cancer in pre-menopausal women. Alcohol can cause weight gain which also increases cancer risk. In South
Africa, alcohol is considered to be the most widespread and harmful drug of abuse.” The Youth Risk Behaviour Survey (2011) carried out with Grade 8 to 11 learners attending public schools in all nine provinces of South Africa, indicate that youth alcohol usage is also particularly concerning. Almost half (49%) of these learners responded that they had had alcohol in their lives so far, and 32% had had alcohol in the last month (before the survey). One in four learners reported that they had engaged in binge drinking or in having five or more alcoholic drinks on at least one (or more) day/s in the last month (as in the month before the survey was done). This demonstrates the levels to which these learners used alcohol. The study also found that the higher the grade/ age the more likely it is that they used/ drank alcohol. “We need healthier future generations, who are able to exercise smart choices. Parents are advised to keep communication channels open between themselves and their children, also demonstrating responsible behaviour and how to manage stress in positive ways. They should also talk to them about the disadvantages of alcohol abuse including that it increases personal vulnerability, cancer risk, and risk of disability and death,” she added. “The more alcohol you drink, the higher your risk for cancer so we aim to encourage people to lower their alcohol intake or even quit. And ‘binge’ drinking (having five or more 19

The Impact of Alcohol Use and Abuse in South Africa Alcohol use and abuse together pose significant public health and safety problems which include causing a number of cancers. A 2018 study investigating heavy drinking (which is defined as 8 or more standard measures for men and 6 or more standard drinks for women) in Tshwane found that more than half of their study population (70% men and 30% women) were heavy drinkers. Recent investigations into alcohol marketing practices and its influence on youth demonstrated an association between exposure to alcohol brands and product advertising and youth alcohol consumption. In 2015, alcohol was the fifth leading cause of death and disability in South Africa, which is likely attributable to the two leading causes of death in South Africa: » alcohol’s role in causing sexually transmitted infections (under the influence of liquor, risky behaviours increase, leading to the transmission or progression of sexually transmitted infections, injuries, including those due to road traffic crashes, violence, and suicides) » causing interpersonal violence
Contrary to popular belief one drink is not equivalent to one unit of alcohol » In SA, the legal limit is a breath alcohol content of 0.24mg per 1,000ml, or a blood alcohol limit of 0.05g per 100ml » The rule of thumb is a maximum of one unit of alcohol per hour, which constitutes 10ml of pure alcohol, based on an adult weighing 68kg » Our bodies can process only one unit of alcohol each hour » However, if weighing less than 68kg your body will need more time to process the same amount of alcohol

Stand Up Against Alcohol Abuse and Fight for a Cancer-Free South Africa South Africa is currently considering a liquor amendment bill to reduce per capita consumption, including provisions that would raise the national minimum legal purchase age from 18 to 21 years. » CANSA made a submission and welcomed the proposed amendments and the prohibition of sale to persons under age 21 and requested that the Minister prescribes messages on alcohol container labels that reflect the harmful effects of alcohol consumption including cancer risk » CANSA also urged the Minister to prohibit alcohol consumption in public and private institutions of learning, at functions, and for the purpose of raising funds and called for an outright ban on all forms of advertising and promotion of alcohol on all media platforms and that there be standardisation in all provinces CANSA believes that a proactive stance by communities to minimise excessive exposure to alcohol has important implications for the lowering of cancer risk in South Africa:

June in the Garden The days are shorter and the nights long and cold, but there is always something to plant and do in the garden. So, dress up warmly and dig right in! It’s not too cold for super winter woodland shrubs‌ Not many plants can claim to be salt spray tolerant, as well as drought and frost hardy. Add to this, creamy white bell-shaped flowers and contrasting grey green leaves and you have a dream plant! White correa (Correa alba) is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub that has leathery grey-green leaves. It has a dense rounded habit and can grow to 1.5m in height. It tolerates pruning well and can make a good hedge or small shrub. Correa grows in the sun or partial shade. It is not fussy about the soil, but prefers a well-draining medium, enriched with compost. It needs regular watering when young, but once established, it is quite water wise. Amongst the diverse group of Crassulas are groundcovers which can grow and flower heartily in the poor soil around tree trunks in dry, or even wet (well-drained) semi-shade, as well as in difficult to plant retaining walls. Others can be used as bright colour accents in gravel or rock gardens, specimen plants in large containers or as tough shrubs. They can even be planted up as succulent hedges in dry or windy coastal gardens, or in hanging baskets, in window boxes, or as houseplants.

Pretoria High Natural Science Olympiad 2019 Principal’s Birthday
By Neha Singh (Grade 9) Emily Hawkes and Neha Singh, in Grade 9, represented PHSG in a natural science Olympiad. The first round was written on 14 May at Sunnyside Primary. The paper was thirty minutes long and consisted of the following topics: life and living and matter and material. The results of the Olympiad were discussed with all the students who participated, shortly after the paper was written and marked. Both girls have made it into round two along with six other learners from various high schools’. Round two is a district competition and will be written on 23 July 2019.
By Ferne Dilettante On 9 May, the whole school gathered in front of the main building to celebrate the belated birthday of Mrs Erasmus. As Mrs Erasmus walked through the Formal Gardens, she was handed a single iris from each of the prefects until she had a small bouquet. The marimbas played Happy Birthday and the entire school sang. It was a joyous occasion for all involved.

Artist Rising Talent Showcase PHSG would like to congratulate Megan van Niekerk who will be travelling to Orlando, Florida, US, in June to compete in the Artist Rising Talent Showcase (Arts) festival. Megan has a passion for singing and dreams of composing for films. Megan will be showcasing her talent and participating in the singing category at the festival and is looking forward to performing in front of scouts and agents for Disney and The New York Film Academy.
By Ferne Dilettante On 10 May, the PHSG Performing Arts learners treated guests to a spectacular show of talent at the Mother’s Day Concert. The concert opened with Mr Iliev playing the piano while a slideshow of girls with their mothers played in the background. It really set the scene for the night with everybody recognising their friends and peers and commenting on how everyone looked content and loving. The PHSG Rock Band had their debut playing ‘Just the way you are’ by Bruno Mars and ‘She will be loved’ by Maroon 5. The audience particularly appreciated the debut performance of our own rock band.
“Megan literally started singing before she could talk. She has always had a tremendous interest in music and singing, always in front of a piano or violin,” says Megan’s mother Mariette van Niekerk. It was memorable to see so many girls performing in the guitar ensembles. The Alison Kitto Walkway
On Monday 13 May, our German Matric class of 2018 was invited back for a special assembly to be presented with their DSD Certificates. The Deutsches Sprachdiplom (German Language Diploma) is an external international examination written by our Matrics at the end of every year. Upon receiving these DSD Certificates, our learners’ proficiency in German is internationally recognised and opens many new doors for them in their future travels, studies and careers.
By Jasmine Beeforth (Grade 9)
Along with the 15 Matrics that wrote the DSD last year, two Grade 10 (now 11) German mother tongue speakers gave the examination their best shot and very proudly received their certificates as well.
It was certainly a momentous occasion on 20 May when Mrs Kitto, an Ex-Principal of PHSG, cut the ribbons and walked to the middle of the newly-built Alison Kitto Walkway to view the plaque in her honour. Having taken the Congratulations to Claudia Strahlendorf, podium for the first time again after many years, she addressed the PHSG Assembly Sarah Vogetseder and our German Matric saying that change is good as long as the good class of 2018! things remain. Nikolaus August Otto One of the most important landmarks in engine design comes from Nicolaus Otto who in 1876 invented an effective gas motor engine— the first practical alternative to the steam engine. Otto built the first practical four-stroke internal combustion engine called the “Otto Cycle Engine,” and when he completed his engine, he built it into a motorcycle. Born: June 14, 1832 Died: January 26, 1891 Otto’s Early Days Nicolaus Otto was born the youngest of six children in Holzhausen, Germany. His father died in 1832 and he began school in 1838. After six years of good performance, he moved to the high school in Langenschwalbach until 1848. He did not complete his studies but was cited for good performance. Otto’s main interest in school had been in science and technology but, nevertheless, he graduated after three years as a business apprentice in a small merchandise company. After completing his apprenticeship, he moved to Frankfurt where he worked for Philipp Jakob Lindheimer as a salesman, selling tea, coffee, and sugar. He soon developed an interest in the new technologies of the day and began experimenting with building four-stroke engines (inspired by Lenoir’s two-stroke gas-driven internal combustion engine). In late autumn of 1860, Otto and his brother learned of a novel gas engine that Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir had built in Paris. The brothers built a copy of the Lenoir engine and applied for a patent in January 1861 for a liquid-fuelled engine based on the Lenoir (Gas) engine with the Prussian Ministry of Commerce, but it was rejected. The engine ran just a few minutes before breaking. Otto’s brother gave up on the con-

The bottom of the pot should have two small holes, feed the square shaped wire through these small holes with the bottom of the square aligning with the bottom of the pot. Step 6: Prepare the roots Using the chopstick, scrape away the soil that is around the roots. The bottom of the roots will be trimmed away, the soil towards the top can stay. Once you have cleared a fair amount of soil, you can trim away around ⅓ of the roots. Step 7: Potting your tree Next, cover the bottom of the pot with a layer of soil, and place your tree on top of the soil. Position the tree at an angle, it shouldn’t be exactly straight. Now you can use those wires that are sticking up through the bottom of the pot to hold down the tree. Twist the two ends of the wire together, making sure the wire holds the tree roots down. Then, trim away any bits of wire that are still showing. You can now cover the tree roots with more soil. Push the soil between the roots, there should be no air pockets, you can use the chopstick for this. Ongoing care Once you have watered the tree, it is ready to be displayed. Wait four weeks before you apply fertiliser and be sure to check that the wire is not damaging the branches. A bonsai tree DIY is easy to make and the materials are easy to source. You can ask for assistance or purchase your Juniper tree at your local GCA Garden Centre.

For the past twenty-three years he has been making harps, choosing beautifully coloured local wood, carving and shaping it by hand, and adding his unique ‘signature’: a specially chosen pebble that he sits in
the wood. He enjoys his solitary, quiet routine. Then, one day, Exmoor housewife Ellie Jacobs stumbles across the barn by chance as she’s walking in the woods. She’s utterly stunned by the discovery of the enchanting workshop, and Dan (taken by her surprise –and her cherry-coloured socks) gives her the gift of a beautiful cherry wood harp. But Ellie’s controlling husband Clive refuses to let her keep it –and so she begins to take lessons in secret at the barn. Captivated by Dan’s innocent enthusiasm and infectious joy for the countryside, his life, his harps, Ellie starts to dream of escaping her loveless marriage –and so begins a story of innocent deception, unintended complications and life-changing consequences for them all.
Unsolved - Invisible 02 James Patterson A chilling and shocking follow-up to Sunday Times bestseller Invisible by James Patterson. FBI researcher Emma Dockery is back with a vengeance. Obsessed with finding a link between a string of deaths across several different states, she is convinced that there›s a pattern. And where there›s a pattern, there›s a serial killer to put a stop to. When Detectives working on some of these cases start turning up dead, Emma knows that she›s onto something. These deaths are murders, and she›s going to be the one to prove it. The closer she gets to finding the killer, the more Emma feels like she’s being watched. Is she setting a trap for this depraved killer? Or with every step she takes, is she falling further into his...? With the death count rising, Emma must act fast to catch this killer, before she becomes the next name on the hit list. Publisher: Penguin Random House
