Dick Gaughan and Andy Irvine
The Life & Times of ‘Wee Joe’ Devlin By Dr Éamon Phoenix, political historian and commentator An Chultúrlann, Theatre Thursday 3rd February, 6.30pm
‘Wee Joe’ Devlin was born in Belfast’s Hamill Street to poor parents in 1871. Educated by the Christian Brothers, he left to become a pot-boy in Kelly’s Cellars and subsequently a journalist (Irish News). In the 1890s he emerged as a compelling orator and skilled organiser and went on to expose conditions in the mills and fought for reform. In 1906 he captured West Belfast, standing for Home Rule, revived the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), but supported recruitment during WWI. He opposed partition and led the reunited nationalists into the Belfast Parliament after1925. Devlin, who died in 1934, stands out as a working-class Catholic politician who blended pragmatism with social reform and won crosssectarian support. Sponsored by the Irish News

Glaswegian-born Dick Gaughan is a singer/ songwriter, particularly of folk and social protest songs, and a major recording artist. His songs have been adopted by Billy Bragg, Christy Moore, Mary Black, Roy Bailey and Capercaillie. He has been described as “the kind of voice that could stop a train in its tracks” (The Independent) and as “one of the most coveted and revered voices of recent times” (Rock'n'Reel). Andy Irvine, one of the great contemporary Irish singers (and a founding member of Planxty), has been hailed as “a tradition in himself ”. As a soloist, Andy fills the role of the archetypal troubadour with a show and a travelling lifestyle that reflect his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie. “Often copied, never equalled” (Irish Times), his repertoire consists of Irish traditional songs, dexterous Balkan dances and a compelling cannon of his own self-penned songs.
