Tá féile á cleachtadh ag tús an Earraigh in Éirinn ó bhí aimsir na bPágánach ann agus beocht úr ag teacht ar an talamh agus sprid úr i measc na ndaoine le himeacht dorchadas agus fuacht an gheimhridh. Cheiliúr na reamh-Ceiltigh Imbolc leath-bealaigh idir grianstad an gheimhridh agus cónocht an Earraigh agus nuair a tháinig an Chríostaíocht, thosaigh muid ag ceiliúradh Lá na Féile Bríde ar an chéad lá d’Fheabhra. Am lán dóchais agus beochta a bhí ann agus tá sé mar a gcéanna inniu agus Féile an Earraigh a ceiliúradh i mBéal Feirste. Seo an 7ú bliain d’Fhéile an Earraigh, amháin d’fhéilte spleodracha Fhéile an Phobail atá ag dul ó neart to neart bliain i ndiaidh bliana. Dalta na bhféilte anallód, tógfaidh Féile an Earraigh croí an phobail agus iad ag amharc chun tosaigh ar an bhliain úr le coirmeacha ceoil den chéad scoth, idir thraidisiúnta agus nua-aimsear tha, dráma, litríocht agus cainteanna a chuideoidh linn amharc siar le bród agus chun tosaigh le dóchas in atmaisféar spraíúil a mheascann saíocht ár sean agus tallann ár ndaoine óga. Ag iarraidh bhuaicphointí an cheoil traidisiúnta le linn Fhéile an Earraigh, tá sé mar a bheifeá mar bhainisteoir ar an fhoireann sacair is saibhre ar domhan - cé a fhágann tú amuigh, tá gach coirm chomh maith sin. Ach ...
“” Chonaic mé na Peatbog Faeries ar Eilean Leòdhais cúpla uair agus is réaltaí móra ar fad iad. Ceol raic ar uirlisí traidisiúnta - an phíb mhó san áireamh - agus molaim go mór iad. Ach murar leor é sin, ar an oíche chéanna, beidh Gino Lupari, Dónal Murphy agus Steve Cooney, triúir laoch de mo chuid ag seinm. Ceann de choirmeacha na bliana atá geallta ar an 6ú Feabhra - ach caitheann sé dul in iomaíocht le Beoga agus Lau a bheas ag seinm an oíche ina dhiaidh don ghradam! Mura chuala tú iomrá ar na JJKs, aithneoidh tú an duine as ar baisteadh iad - fear an bhodhráin, John Joe Kelly. Tá foireann curtha le chéile ag John Joe a bhfuil sé d’aidhm acu fuinneamh an cheoil traidisiúnta a thógáil chomh hard agus is féidir. Beidh The David Munnelly Band ag seinm ar an oíche chéanna. Agus ná déan dearmad go mbeidh an Comórtas do Chóir Gaelscoileanna ar siúl i dTeach Pobail Naomh Muire ar an 5ú Feabhra ag toiseacht ar a 10am - An tSaoi

Penguin Cafe Supported by Aoife Scott Clonard Monastery Friday 5th February, 7.30pm
Aoife Scott is an up-and-coming singer from Dublin. Having been born into the well-known Black family, she realised from an early age that she wanted to sing. In February Aoife will be releasing a five track EP which will include her version of the song ‘Colony’ by Damien Dempsey. Arthur Jeffes has brought together a group of young musicians to create Penguin Cafe, with a fresh take on the music of the orchestra founded by his late father, Simon Jeffes, as well as introducing new compositions. The quintessentially English sound of the Penguin Café Orchestra, influenced by folk, bluegrass, avant-garde classical music, pop, Spanish, French and Irish tunes, has enjoyed a continuing cult status, especially for compositions such as ‘Telephone and Rubber Band’ and ‘Music for a Found Harmonium’. The music is light-hearted, deceptively simple in sound, irrepressibly chirpy, irresistibly quirky and undeniably original! Admission: £10 Tickets available from all Féile outlets. LAU & Beoga Supported by Aibhleis Bank Square Marquee Sunday 7th February, Doors 8pm
Beoga
Beoga (Irish word for ‘lively’) are based in County Antrim and were formed in 2002 after ‘jamming’ in a ferocious session at the All-Ireland Fleadh. The bedrock of their sound lies firmly within the Irish tradition. However, they are not afraid to incorporate other genres’ nuances into their music. With their unique blend of inventive arrangements, virtuosi instrumental talents and beautiful vocals, Beoga’s popularity continues to flourish as they captivate audiences on a global scale. LAU are a formidable trio of the finest and most innovative exponents of modern traditional music in Britain, and were winners of ‘Best Group’ in
BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2008 & 2009.Their now infamous live shows are a must-see experience with an energy and musicianship that is spellbinding. Lau employ rising, epic song structures not usually associated with folk music and more akin to those on the leftfield of rock and jazz. Both bands take to the stage for a whirlwind night of music and dancing to end Féile an Earraigh 2010 with a bang! Supported by Aibhleis (Andersonstown School of Music). Litríocht Duke Special
Bliain i ndiaidh bliana, bíonn Scribes at the West ar cheann de na himeachtaí is mó sult le linn Fhéile an Phobail i mí Lúnasa. Ar an deá-uair, beidh an ócáid ar siúl le linn Fhéile an Earraigh ar an 6ú Feabhra i mbliana agus aíonna iontacha le páirt a ghlacadh ann. Ghlac Duke Special páirt sa chéad Scribes agus beidh amhránaí na ndreadlock ag caint ar a thogra úr, trí albam curtha amach le chéile faoin teideal The Stage, A Book & the Silver Screen. Labhróidh sé ar na rudaí a spreag an tionscnamh corraitheach seo. Ar an ardán céanna, beidh Tom Mathews a bhfuil clú air mar chartúnaí leis an Irish Times - bhíodh cartún dá chuid sa cholún Tuarascáil, más buan mo chuimhne - ach a bhfuil filíocht dá chuid curtha i gcló fosta. Léifidh sé óna shaothar gleoite, The Owl and the Pussycat and other Poems. Is dócha gur beag duine i mBéal Feirste a chuala iomrá ar Les Barker go dtí seo - ainneoin go bhfuil 77 leabhar scríofa aige! Mholfainn do dhuine ar bith a ainm a chur isteach sa suíomh youtube agus gheobhaidh sibh amach cén fáth go mbeidh sé ag caint ag Scribes. Tabhair leat mala Kleenex - beidh siad de dhíth leis na deora gáire a thriomú! - An tSaoi

Scribes At The West West Social Club, Falls Road Saturday, 6th February, 4 – 6pm
Featuring Duke Special,Tom Mathews and Les Barker On the eve of simultaneously releasing three albums (a box set under the title ‘The Stage, A Book & the Silver Screen’), the endearing Duke Special, who performed at the very first Scribes, will be talking about the inspiration behind these three new recordings and his adventures in a career in music thus far. Dubliner Tom Mathews has been a freelance cartoonist, writer and critic since 1975. His work appears weekly in The Irish Times and Sunday Independent. He has illustrated a dozen books, written a novel and published three volumes of cartoons. His hobbies are drinking stout and talking too much about women, James Joyce and Groucho Marx. He has also been mistaken for George Formby! He will be reading from his recently published book of poems, ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’. Les Barker writes strange poems and originally comes from Manchester, but he’s now Welsh. He’s written 77 books, which sell in large numbers at his gigs because people don’t quite believe what they’ve just heard. The Financial Times has described his gig as “absolutely brilliant” and Q Magazine said of his readings “Scintillating daftness, absurdity run amok.” Les’ subjects include the sinking of the Titanic [from the polar bear’s perspective], Jason and the Arguments, Cosmo the Fairly Accurate Knife Thrower, to name but a few. Tour of Milltown Cemetery Assemble – Front Gate
Saturday 6th February, 11am
Coiste guide Pod Devenney shows how Milltown reflects the history of nationalist and republican Belfast going back 130 years. Health Warning: keep an eye on the weather. Come prepared: good walking boots, warm clothing and bring light refreshments. £5 per person: pay at front gate. Approximately two hours.
