1.0 Introduction This exercise is largely focusing on the understanding of structural theory, force calculation and the basic structural design proposal. In order to do that, we are to find a building to study. The case study is a two-storey terrace house situated in Johor. With the measured drawings on floor plans, elevations and sections provided, a study and observations on the structural layout of the building were made and recorded. Identification of structural components such as beam and column would help further understand the structural framing and its load distribution path. With this knowledge of, execution and implementation of basic procedures of building structure design on our individual component, where we are to individually propose an extension renovation idea, would be helpful.

2.0 Objective This assignment is aimed to introduce the basic design process of a building structure. It helps one to identify the structural components and also to understand the structural engineering considerations taken behind the concept and structure layout design. To ensure a building structure actually works, intricate calculations must be done to make sure the dimensions of the structural members used are appropriate.

3.0 Brief Overview of Case Study In this project, we have chosen the medium cost double storey terrace house which is located in Sri Pulai Perdana, Johor as our case study. Designed by RDC Arkitek Sdn. Bhd., this project has been in development since March 2014 and is still under construction.

One single unit has a built up area of approximately 105.48sq.m, including the 8.64 sq.m of covered exterior area. The ground floor consists of one living room, bedroom, bathroom, dining room and kitchen which makes up 50.89 sq.m of the total built in area of 96.84 sq.m, while the first floor has 2 bedrooms, bathroom and living area, and this makes up the remaining 49.59 sq. m.

In residential design, columns and beams are assembled in moment resisting frames. In this project, we have studied and analyzed the spaces through set of architectural drawings such as plans, elevations and sections to identify the position of columns in the building. A set of structural plans is produced after the structures are framed accordingly.

6.0 Conclusion Throughout this whole project, we have learned how to identify the structural components in building. We have explored to the structural analysis which involves basic structural theory and concept. It is important for us to understand the structural loading’s action and reaction forces in order to frame a building’s structural components. Mathematical analysis is also carried out in order to quantify the load transferred in a structural system. We have understood that the sizing of beams and columns must be taken into consideration as it will affect the integrity of the structure. To conclude, the knowledge gained in this project is important for us as architecture students and will definitely benefit us in the future.
