OPENING CEREMONY

T

he five-day event, now in its 63rd year, was organized by the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) , which maintains 108 National Member Organizations with over 1.2 million students represented worldwide. The vicepresident of TMU(Taipei Medical University) said he hoped this conference would enable people from all over the world to know more about Taiwan and Taiwanese culture. During the ceremony, Lum Chih Yean and Ang Sau Xiong, Director of PreGA, introduced shows included martial arts, traditional Chinese orchestra and Singsong Chorus. "We hope this PreGA can impress delegates by Taiwanese culture." said Ang. "And thanks for all the staff for preparing whole year." After the ceremony, guests moved to the square outside and gathered around the round tables. Many of them have experienced flight delays, but still have fun during Bando-style dinner.

“Bando (辦桌)” culture, a form of boisterous eating around a round table in an open space, was significant in the development of Taiwanese cuisine. "I really love all the food on the table! "one of the delegates said while enjoying the meal,"but it's too hot to eat outdoor!" Not getting used to squezzing with ten people at one table and suffering hot weather at the same time, guests may not get the ideal quality of the meal they have expected. Nonetheless, the unique Taiwanese food did dazzle everyone's eyes and stomach. Bando is not only a new-style of banquet, but brings culture shock to western world. Hope you enjoy it!
