Artist in focus EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE

Eadweard James Muybridge was an English photographer important for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion and in motion picture projection. Muybridge immigrated to the United States at the age of 25. He started as a bookseller and agent for a London printer/publisher in booming San Francisco. A stagecoach crash sent him home with severe head injuries, where he took up photography while convalescing, by the 1860â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s his photographs of Yosemite Valley, California, made him world famous. Muybridge is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion in 1877 and 1878, which used multiple cameras to capture motion in stopaction photographs.

In the 1880s, Muybridge attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, producing many thousands of images of animals and humans in motion, capturing what the human eye could not distinguish as separate movements. Muybridge also edited and published compilations of his work. This has been regarded to greatly influence visual artists and the developing fields of scientific and industrial photography. He was born on the 9th April 1830 and died on the 8th May 1904 both at Kingston upon Thames, England.
