As we step into autumn, the colours and materials for interior schemes change from soft pastels and brights to warmer, richer shades, with homeware in more sumptuous fabrics and finishes. Our focus turns to layering sofas and beds with tactile cushions, throws and bedlinen to create a snug feel, and this month’s decorating feature (p27) embraces these seasonal tones, giving you the inspiration and confidence to refresh your rooms with a few easy updates, or to be brave and transform your entire space. Sticking with the cosy theme, our Heating guide on p85 gives you the lowdown on the latest woodburners, radiators and gas or electric fires, plus all the top tips and advice you’ll need; I definitely have my eye on a stylish new stove after enjoying my outdoor version over the last few months. Finally, with life starting to feel more normal again, our live events are returning – and you can enjoy a couple of great days out on us. Simply turn to pages 104 & 122 for your free tickets to The Cake & Bake Show and Grand Designs Live. See you there!

oving to West London from Essex for work, Jenny and Jason Lee wanted a house they could really make their mark on, and an unloved rental with bags of potential caught their eye. ‘It was in a really bad condition, but there was a large loft space that had never been converted, plus room to extend the kitchen and put in a garden office, which would mean we could have exactly what we wanted,’ recalls Jenny. ‘It’s rare these days to find a property that’s quite so untouched, as usually they’ve been snapped up by builders.’ After securing the house, the couple set about finding both a designer and a builder to help them realise their plans, and were lucky enough to discover a husband-and-wife team, who were recommended by their estate agents. ‘Dagmara is an interior designer and project manager OCTOBER 2021 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 43

We also wanted to extend the kitchen,’ says Jenny. With planning permission in place, there was no question that everything in the house would need to be replaced. It was in such a bad condition after being ‘bashed about by renters,’ but undertaking a complete renovation also gave the couple the freedom to have everything they wanted. The other big factor in the house redesign was the family’s large piano. Both boys are talented players, and it was the size of the piano that dictated where the wall was moved back to when the kitchen extension was discussed. With the building work underway, it was time to concentrate on the interior schemes. Jenny’s style is modern and minimal, with a love of a monochrome palette and good design. ‘I needed Dagmara’s help with sourcing pieces and putting the different options in front of me, but I’m quite decisive about what I like,’ she explains. What they hadn’t bargained for was a global pandemic. ‘Not long into the build, the country went into lockdown, which complicated everything,’ says Jenny. ‘We were even more pleased that we’d chosen Dagmara and Artan to do the work, as they live together, which made everything a lot easier. Artan runs his own team, and as the house was empty, his builders were allowed to carry on working.’ However, because of the government restrictions, Jenny and Jason couldn’t go to the house themselves. ‘It was a bit frustrating not being able to see the changes when we were so close by, but

Dagmara was great,’ says Jenny. ‘She kept us updated every day on the progress with photos and videos. Together we made a lot of choices over the internet!’ Plenty of storage had been high on the couple’s wish list, so they decided to go for bespoke cupboards, shelves and wardrobes to achieve the exact configurations they were looking for. The luxury of having all the joinery handmade by a carpenter was particularly useful as some of the spaces were not standard sizes. The same went for the décor, with Dagmara being a dab hand at creating soft furnishings. ‘If there was something I really wanted but couldn’t find, like a

Owned by Jo and Rob Moore, the couple had been living in a bustling town on the Sussex coast, and although they loved their flat, they knew they’d have to leave it behind when they started a family. ‘At the top of our wish list for our new home was a garden,’ says Jo. ‘We lived really close to the seafront, but as soon as our daughters came along, some outside space of our own became a priority.’ Next on the list was a good local school, but in terms of a home, Jo and Rob wanted ‘something a little bit different we could improve and make our own.’ When they came across this property a few miles from their flat, it ticked a lot of their boxes. ‘We fell in love with the stunning views across

the South Downs, and coming from a place with no outside space to a beautiful overgrown country garden felt really exciting,’ says Jo. Regarding the property itself, the couple were delighted with the find. ’Our last home was Victorian with lots of original features including fireplaces, cornices, and storey-height frames with stained glass,’ Jo explains. ‘I was sad to say goodbye to these elements, but this property had its own personality, and we particularly liked its story.’ Built in the style of a barn as a billiard room for the Manor House next door, the

The property had been rented out for years, so the décor was dated and in need of some serious TLC. In addition, the couple were able to reinstate the huge barn doors as a glazed feature leading onto the garden to add huge amounts of extra light. But naturally, all this took time. ‘We

started by removing the roof and taking out all the internal walls and floors, leaving only the external shell,’ explains Rob. ‘We then extended in two directions and added the extra storey.’ While the work was being carried out, the couple, now with a pre-schooler and toddler in tow, moved out. ’We lived in the original house for six months while planning permission was obtained, then rented for six months while all the main construction work took place,’ Jo explains. ‘When we moved back in, we had OCTOBER 2021 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 61

After having moved from Brighton to North Devon for Sam’s job as a head teacher, they were looking for a home away from home where they could walk their puppy George, let the children run around in the fresh air and take a break from their busy lives. ‘We hoped having a place to escape to would encourage us to slow down and spend more time together as a family,’ Laura explains. ‘We had fallen in love with the stark beauty of this rugged coastline a few years ago. The cliffs and blue-grey stone beaches are so dramatic.’ Originally a milking parlour, the property was built around 200 years ago, and had been gifted to one of the farm workers back in the 1960s. Renovated by its previous owners, the open-plan layout of the ground floor included a living area and kitchen, with panoramic views of open fields on one side and woodland on the other. ‘I am drawn to inspiring spaces, and was completely taken by the house the moment I walked in,’ Laura recalls. ‘It was even more beautiful in real life than the photos we

ooking for a DIY project with minimum effort but maximum return on investment for your home? Upgrading old, tired radiators for stylish, affordable designer models might be an easier job than you think. Plus, swapping similar-size radiators doesn’t always require the help of a plumber, so read on for BestHeating's top tips… 1. First, turn the heating off and allow the radiators to cool, shutting off both valves on each side. If you have thermostatic valves, turn the valve with the numbered dial down to 0. With manual valves, turn your on/off valve clockwise until it is tightly shut. On the other side of your radiator, you will find a lockshield valve with a plastic cap. Twist the cap to remove it and use an adjustable spanner to turn the spindle clockwise. To guarantee that your new radiator has the

same flow rate, make a note of the number of turns you made so you can return it to the original position later. 2. Next, protect your floors with towels for draining your radiator, positioning watercatching containers under the valves before gently undoing the nut that connects your radiator to the valve. You will notice water start to drain as you disconnect it. 3. Drain the remaining water from your radiator using a bleed key, opening the bleed valve by turning your key anti-clockwise to help to drain the water. Close the bleed valve by turning it clockwise, then move over to the valve nut on the other side of the radiator. 4. Remove the radiator from the wall by lifting it off the brackets, tilting to one side to drain the remaining water into your bowl. Set aside your old radiator and block the

outlets with tissue to prevent any excess water leaking out. Your current radiator brackets might not be designed to support the weight of your new one, so if so, remove the brackets ready for replacements. 5. Prep your new radiator for installation by wrapping PTFE sealing tape around the tail of both valve connectors, then wind in the tails with a spanner and hang the radiator onto the brackets. Connect the valves and turn them anti-clockwise to turn them on. For the lockshield valve, make the same number of turns you noted down previously. Open the bleed valve with a radiator key to allow the air to escape, then close it as soon as water comes out. Check the radiator for leaks, then turn the heating on to ensure everything is working correctly. And you're all set!

Looking for the perfect woodburner? Choose one of the latest designs with eco-credentials from Stovax

Y

ou may recall that from 2022, woodburning stove manufacturers can only sell Ecodesign-compliant products, all as part of the government’s aim to improve air quality. While the new rules don’t apply to homeowners’ existing products, you might already be thinking of updating your fireplace this winter – to do your part for the environment, as well as to futureproof your home for years to come. Spanning woodburning and multi-fuel models, Stovax offers the largest range of Ecodesign Ready stoves and fires in the UK and Republic of Ireland. But what makes one of these appliances different from older models? The key differences are found inside the stove itself. Today’s Ecodesign woodburners, like the brand-new Stovax Futura 5 above, feature specially developed fireboxes and airflow systems, which ensure that fuel is burnt with high efficiency and minimal emissions.

Visit your local expert Stovax retailer for advice, or for more information, go to stovax.com

84 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER 2021

The Futura 5 not only offers all the good looks of a contemporary woodburner, but the high performance to match. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a woodburner that’s built into the wall, Stovax’s Vogue 700 Inset fire offers Ecodesign credentials, as well as an industrial-chic finish to suit a variety of interior schemes. When compared with the performance of an older stove, Ecodesign models can reduce emissions by as much as 80 per cent, minimising the impact on local air quality and reducing the build-up of tar and soot in your home’s chimney. But it’s essential that you fuel your Ecodesign woodburner with good quality, dry firewood. Look out for the Woodsure ‘Ready to Burn’ logo, which confirms the wood has been dried to below 20 per cent moisture content, as the correct firewood not only allows for more heat output, but also prevents any blackening of the stove glass, as well as preventing soot build-up in the chimney or flue.

‘WE’VE WAITED A LONG TIME FOR THIS’ Sarah and Adrian Buckle renovated a house and created their dream kitchen in the process Feature JO MESSENGER Photography PAUL CRAIG

+2: ',' <285 .,7&+(1 352-(&7 %(*,1"b The house we bought needed a complete renovation and I knew the kitchen would be a major part of it – that was part of the attraction. This is our first house in over 30 years of marriage where we have been able to design and install something to our own specifications. We’ve waited so long, we wanted to get it right! We were shown around the 1909 Kitchens head office design studio in Newton Aycliffe and chose the Ovolo range in Charcoal and Dove Grey. WHAT BIG IDEAS DID YOU HAVE FOR THE SPACE? We removed the dividing wall between the existing kitchen and pantry to create space for a more open-plan kitchen, with a large island as the central point. We also wanted to bring in more light and install French doors out to the garden. Our design included using the area above the room to create a vaulted ceiling, to provide more height and a greater sense of space. It was exciting to expose the old oak roof beams, and they add real character. We used local traders for the building work, but Adrian also removed around seven tons of stone himself ! DID YOU HAVE ANY OTHER MUST-HAVE FEATURES? The range cooker situated in the old fireplace was an important part of the design concept, as I was keen to use the space effectively and aesthetically. We also decided to stretch the budget and install electric underfloor heating. It works really well with the slate floor, and is a real pleasure to walk on during the colder months. 94 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER 2021

PRICE PATROL WERE YOU ABLE TO STICK TO YOUR ORIGINAL BUDGET? The kitchen work was part of our renovation plans for the whole house, so our provisional outlay was £25,000. But we soon realised that we would need to spend another £10,000 on the glazing and fitting costs that would help us achieve the vision we were looking for and make best use of an unusual space. WAS THERE ANYTHING THAT COST MORE THAN EXPECTED? I really wanted to upgrade to an induction

hob. Adrian took some persuading, but he now agrees it was the right choice. I was also keen to have integrated blinds within the sealed glass units of the French doors and the window. They were an indulgent purchase, but in keeping with the rest of the kitchen design. They work brilliantly and I’m glad we were able to stretch our funds for them

e really love the quartz worktops,’ says Dennis, as he sits at the large island centrepiece of his and wife Louise’s new kitchen. ‘When they were brought in, it reminded me a little bit of the slate they bring in for snooker tables, with how careful and precise they were.’ As a former world snooker champion, Dennis appreciates that precision takes time. ‘Wren really were meticulous when they came to measure up. But when you see the result, you understand why!’ Dennis admits that getting rid of the old kitchen in his family home in North Wales was Louise’s idea, rather than his. ‘We had this matt, cream-coloured kitchen that I loved, but it was past its best, and I have to say I’m absolutely delighted with our new Wren kitchen. It’s the total opposite of what we had before.’ The couple have contrasted their white quartz worktops and splashbacks with high-gloss Italian concrete units and copper inlays. ‘It’s so bright in here now,’ says Dennis. ‘The gloss really throws the

light around the room. And the copper has become something of a theme, with the wirework pendant lights too.’ The design of the kitchen was a collaboration between Louise and her Wren designer Phil, with some ‘small but important’ contributions from Dennis. ‘Wren was recommended by a friend, and when we walked into the Chester showroom it was like stepping into heaven for Louise,’ recalls Dennis. ‘We absolutely loved all of the choice.’ While not being involved in the new kitchen day-to-day, Dennis was kept up to date with the design via regular emails from Wren. ‘I thought it was so impressive that I could see what the kitchen was going to look like on my phone,’ he says. ‘There were a few modifications as we went along, but I could see the changes at every stage.’ One of the changes Dennis was keen to make was getting rid of the old kitchen’s overhead extractor. ‘We had a hood there before and wanted lights instead, so now we have a very clever Neff downdraft extractor that sucks the steam downwards into the worktop. It’s a great complement to the Neff Slide & Hide oven, which Louise adores.’ The only thing that remains now, Dennis says, is to ‘officially open’ their new kitchen. ‘My old friend Ken Doherty is coming round for a few games of golf soon, so I might ask him to do it!’ EXPERT ADVICE The sleek downdraft extractor recommended by designer Phil meant that Dennis could have copper pendant lights above

WOW-FACTOR RETREAT

‘IT’S OUR OWN RELAXING ESCAPE’

A tropical feature wall and luxe tub set the tone in Sarah and Toby King’s new bathroom Feature JANE CRITTENDEN Styling MARISHA TAYLOR Photography JAMES FRENCH

WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL BATHROOM LIKE? We’re first-time buyers and were excited by the potential of this scruffy house, but we knew there would be plenty of work to do to get it just right. The tatty bathroom had an electric shower over a plastic bath, grubby tiles and exposed pipework. The room also felt really hemmed in – the toilet was so close to the wall that you’d bang your arm! DID YOU HAVE ANY INITIAL DESIGN IDEAS? We knew straight away we wanted to pinch space from the guest bedroom, as I love a bath and Toby prefers a shower, and there wasn’t room for both. I drew a scaled drawing and worked out that even by taking a metre of space from the room next door, we could still fit in a king-size bed, but it would make a massive difference to the bathroom. WHAT WERE YOUR PLANS FOR THE LAYOUT? Originally, we thought we’d place a large walk-in shower where we extended, but then decided it wasn’t a good use of space. We both love the look of a freestanding bath, and this led us to the eye-catching feature wall behind. The shower cubicle is on the other side, so it isn’t in the way of the door, and is curved to make the room feel more open. HOW DID YOU WANT THE BATHROOM TO LOOK AND FEEL? We wanted a sense of escapism and luxury; a room we could both use at the same time to relax. So our focus was on a gorgeous bath and a generous shower with brushed-gold fittings. 106 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM OCTOBER 2021

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A PATTERNED WALLPAPER, RATHER THAN TILES? We are both into design and don’t always want to play by the rules! At work we often use premium vinyl wallpaper in hotels, because it’s hardwearing and easy to clean. Photowall has hundreds of images and makes vinyl wallpaper to bespoke sizes, so we found a fabulous tropical scene, and I cropped the image so the focal point sits in the centre of our wall. DID YOU DO ANY OF THE WORK YOURSELVES? A builder moved the wall; Toby’s uncle, who is a plumber, did all the pipework, and we did the rest ourselves. We’d never done tiling before, but we figured out that using a wooden batten to create a level point above the first line of tiles meant that everything

BATHROOM EXPANSION Moving the wall by a metre made space for the freestanding bath and created room around the basin and shower, tucked behind the door

above would be perfectly straight. We then cut the tiles to fit the gap below, and it seems to have worked! WERE THERE ANY CHALLENGES? As this is our only bathroom, we had to go to my parents’ house nearby to use theirs while we were doing the work. We also had to move the toilet cistern to tile, but it slipped and smashed, sending water into the kitchen below. Fortunately, Toby managed to source a replacement for just £35. HOW DID YOU MANAGE THE COSTS? A budget of £5,000 meant not skimping on anything. The challenge was OCTOBER 2021 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 109

staying within the budget by shopping in sales and using email discounts, and checking the quality with product reviews. We saved £850 just by waiting for the bath to go on sale. In the end, we only spent a grand total of £3,300, including building materials and paying Toby’s uncle.

BOOTH-STYLE REMODEL

DINING OUT

Danni and Nik Pishavadia have transformed their kitchendiner with a stylish bespoke booth area and bi-fold doors Feature DEBBIE JEFFERY Photography MEGAN TAYLOR Project GEORGE AND JAMES ARCHITECTS

WHAT INSPIRED THE NEW STYLE OF SPACE? We’d been living in the house for eight years, but with two growing boys, our existing kitchen-diner wasn't working for us a family or to our taste. We also had to walk through the old utility to reach a downstairs shower room, which was only used as storage for the boys’ scooters and footballs. It was while in the bath reading a magazine one evening that a picture of a dining table with booth seating caught my attention, and made me wonder whether we could find space for something similar. My dad is a retired architect, so sketched out the dimensions to see if it was possible, and although it was a tight fit, we were excited to add more usable space.

Q

permission for the dining space, which has bi-fold doors out onto new decking. Luckily, our neighbours had moved abroad during lockdown and suggested we could live in their house during the project. HOW WAS THE BOOTH CREATED? We’d originally planned to clad the dining area in aluminium, but our budget just wouldn’t stretch, so our builder used grey coloured render for the exterior instead, taking down walls and rebuilding the ceilings. Tiles have been laid in the booth over underfloor heating, with the same flooring running through into the kitchen for a seamless feel. We worked with a carpenter and upholsterer to design the oiled white-ash table and seating, including a dining bench, and were advised that leather-look material – often found on yachts – would be hardwearing and waterproof. For such a small space, it has totally changed the way we use the house, and provides a place to gather and eat, work and play games together as a family. It really has been such a positive change to our home.

Q

HOW DID THE DESIGN EVOLVE? We worked with George and James Architects to fill the kitchen and dining area with light and connect the rooms to the garden. They designed a new corner window above the sink where our back door used to be, and as we live in a Conservation Area applied for planning
