PERFECT FOR ENTERTAINING Emma Brock knocked down walls to make a family-friendly room that everyone can enjoy

About me I’m Emma Brock, a teacher. I live with my husband, Sam Toogood, and our three boys, Miles, 10, Teddy, nine and Tristan, five. Our home is a 1950s four-bed semi near Cheddar, North Somerset. I post interior updates on my Instagram @bakewells_and_baskets.

My room...

MY PROBLEM KITCHEN The kitchen was separate from the snug and dining area. We often entertain friends and family, and I always felt cut off from everyone when I was in the kitchen. It was very small, dark and cramped. HOW I MADE IT WORK We knocked the rooms together and zoned the living, dining and kitchen space, with bi-fold doors to the garden. The pitched roof and roof lights help create a bright, open feel. I chose oak flooring and a classic, farmhouse style that won’t date. MY FAVOURITE PART The split-level island. It acts as a bridge between the cooking zone and the rest of the room. The lower worktop around the sink is quartz, which is really practical, and the wood surface gives the higher section a different feel. The boys love sitting on the stools for snacks, to do homework or just to chat.
