From lyrics of Funky Sensation sang by Gwen McCrae “I’m calling all you party people come on get up and dig that funk that I have for you. “ I hope you can dig my funk and hard work putting this issue out. I really love showing or writing about unseen inner spirit of what the underground movement and many elements around it. We all got that funk whether you are in artist, cook, stylist, organization, dancers, DJ’s or promoters or just want to emulate the spirit of New York Underground culture. Creativity, originality, innovationist, and good networking will help the New York underground culture stay alive. “I’m calling all you party people come on get up and dig that funk that I have for you. You see people like me need people like you to come together and enjoy the funky beat. Take your time relax your mind come on, come on and dig that funky sensation. Can you feel it, can you feel it my funky sensation. Ain’t it good, ain’t it funky now. This funk is like an extra strength pain reliever, I make you feel better than you ever did before. Feel real good yeah, sure is funky. You have never had a funk like this before. Look at that man over there in the corner honey. He ain’t ever moved like he’s moving now; it’s just the funky sensation. Feel that funky sensation.” Funky Sensation sang by Gwen McCrae The song Funky Sensation is deep isn’t it? It’s song that is powerful, directive, fun, funky, attentive, an analgesic (aspirin) to relive that pain, heartache of our daily stress. Ladies and gentlemen we all have that funk, that spirit, special inner light that says go. “Can you feel it, can you feel it my funky sensational. “ I wish I could do more than being a freelance visionary and twine the many networks of the New York Underground scenes with my online project and take it to another level. Let see what the future holds for my funky sensation. Enjoy my funk for now and remember the embrace the innovationist, new talents that will keep that funk going and learn to be more open minded. A family man, Les has held the torch In NYC regarding all ages’ events, first beginning as resident DJ of Yotel's #BeatBrunch series (2012). In the summer of 2013 Les joined uptown urban art museum El Museo Del Barrio as resident DJ for their Radiance series, where dancers of all ages, shapes and sizes arrived weekly before the first track and begged for more even after the last note played that last Wednesday night of the summer.
If you have ever experienced one of Les' events, you know that he knows how to work the crowd and has a tremendous following to say the least. "Peace and love are my strengths, God is my light & Respect the Circle is my cry," says Carbonell. No doubt, I witness Carbonell doing couple moves on dance floor at JUST DANCE event. He mingles in crowd sometimes in conito after putting on up tempo song. Dancing next to a DJ that was just playing. How epic it that!
Les' wife and children continue to be his drive and inspiration. "I play for her, To add to list of decks at at legendary she's made me understand what true NYC venues such as Pacha NYC, Cielo, love is, and as long as I can reach Santos Party House, National Underpeople through my sets and or live ground, Sullivan Room, Arena & The An- performance, I know I've succeeded." nual Black & White Festival (Governor's Island NYC). The event was host by Steven Garcia, Joseph ValentinIt of Republic Music, and Perez Massimo of Left Side Chronicles was an interesting night listening to different flavors of dance house music; all of the DJ’s executed very well. REsy from Evolve label charms the dancers with her style of Afro deep house making them swarm on dance floor, clapping their hands with joy.
Finally, at the end of the night the Galactic house take over by Perez Massimo (Left Side Chronicles). With introductions of sweet talk voices Perez blend in tribal beats and got dancers hopping back up again. Perez has talent to entertain your mind with acapella and strong beats well as making your mind wonder “ what the next record he going to mix? Collaborating throughout the night Steven Garcia not only bless the deck with his mixes, he also was banging of pair of hand drums that looked quality built Spanish bongos. Whenever he was in mood and felt that groove coming on he would hit the bongos. Especially, when Perez played at the end of night, Steven was losing his mind by hitting bongos.

The unifying principle of deep house – the ageless, timeless, all-encompassing sound of real house music – is the foundation of Republic’s musical philosophy. However our roster of artists are inspired by and incorporate a rich kaleidoscope of contemporary sounds, including funk, garage, indie, jazz, Latin and electronica. Soul is the common element, and soul is found in all forms of music as long as heads put their heart in the mix. Not limited to one genre or tempo, Republic’s mission is to dish out the soul of the future. This diverse melting pot of grooves is the real “world music.” It’s a masterful fusion of acoustic and electronic; it’s dark as midnight and light as the promise of a new day.
Republic Music is a unique label and collective based in New York that connects producers, DJs and fans worldwide in the true spirit of the underground. From Brooklyn to the UK, Spain to Sydney and beyond, Republic aims to elevate the standard and get heads nodding in every hemisphere with highly advanced dance music that is grounded in the old school but looks to the next level.

All for one United we fall, united we dance event by Republic music If you’re on Grand Street take a right Jackson Street and walk towards Cherry Street entrance near the FDR Drive. Well, that’s one direction you can go to the Amphitheater inside the East River Park located in lower East side of Manhattan. You can’t miss it once you get near the area of board beauty and it’s openness. It’s located middle of East River Park, Band shell made out of concrete with spike pillars on top emulating a crown with complex stairs on side. Seating are wooden benches terraced from core of the theater. Another name I would like to call the core of theater is “dancing place” or the pit. On the other side of theater faces the East River walking , bicycle path with a view across the water Brooklyn city scraper .

I wish I could go in depth with history of the Amphitheater and East river park but it would take a another book . In short I’m just going to mention few dates and information I think is critical in appreciating it’s colorful history.
1941 the Amphitheater was constructed in the East River Park on lower east side of Manhattan as recreational building.
1950’s, it was the site of many free Evening-in-the-Park concerts including Shakespeare in the Park and Ancient Drama plays performed the Greek classics. Local schools, churches and other organizations of Lower East side held their graduations and honored ceremonies.
1973, the amphitheater closed due to budget cuts. Vandals attacked the neglected theater and by 1980 it was unusable, but not to all. Over time it was one Graffiti artist favorite tag spots.
1982 East River Park Amphitheater is also a bookmark in Hip Hop history when the movie Wild Style did ending scene as a live concert on May 1st, 1982. Brilliant produced and directed by Charlie Ahern, Wild Style is the first hip hop cultural documented movie which was more than just a movie gig it was part of East River Park’s Amphitheater history.
2008 the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation along with lower east side communities and city leaders developed free music, dance, and theater arts programs for the East River Park Amphitheater. They wanted to support and wake up its purpose of serving the public again being safe and recreational again. The goal was to provide the public with a greener city and a wide variety of recreational opportunities since the area is becoming the trend for middle class were moving in.
Sadly to say, after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center Twin Towers, the City Parks Foundation rebuilt and focuses the Amphitheater to bring back revitalization as sign of hope and engage communities of Lower East Side. Residence and many who work in and around that terrible day of devastation need a new sign of hope, to fill that emptiness many communities were wedged in despair and sadness. With unity and corporation with government and companies throughout the U.S. donated materials for the reconstruction and the project involving East River Parks and Amphitheater was speeded up and new plans of improvement.
The Amphitheater today is also a symbol of hope and dedication to those children who lost parents in the 9/11 attacks. The East River Park Amphitheater is a place that has strong presence in history since the staged Julius Caesar play in 1956 and continues to employ memories and entertainment. Page 57

Monday, August 26, 2013, a year ago a Special 30th Anniversary Reunion & Screening of the classic hip-hop film WILD STYLE with Live Performances. Not only it was not a reunion among the cast, it was unity between generations and among friends whom I had not seen in years. I tried to reach out for a brief interview, but since I gotten no answer it does not mean I can’t illustrate the love and strength of Hip Hop from one of its true origins and it was great part of many lives as well as my own.. Bought back memories back in days when we use duck tape and cardboard to make a dance floor and easy spinning on back moves. Another memory was using car battery to power up turn tables and speakers. My children enjoy the movie and now realize it’s important to know the history of anything you love. The Chief Rocker Busy Bee, Grand Wizard Theodore, The Cold Crush, The Fantastic, Rodney C, and a reunion of all the stars of WILD STYLE including Fab 5 Freddy, Lee Quinones, Lady Pink, Patty Astor & Charlie Ahearn. Seeing new underground talents is a given especially being introduced to DJ Toney Da Tiger Aviance. Born and raised in the southern tip of Maryland and received his first set of turntables at the age of 12. he is a proud member of the House of Aviance for over 20 years. Being a member of the Aviance music family has instilled a hard work ethic and a drive to succeed. “Vida with Ray Vazquez” event was in a neighborhood bar called LP Harmony in East Williamsburg, which usually a spot that has diverse crowd and very hard to please. Playing in a lineup with Ray Vazquez/Just Us World Wide, DJ Classic Vic and Johnny Rivera/Brooklyn Elements I thought was interesting for DJ Toney Da Tiger to play for diverse crowd and make his mark as Tiger should. DJ Toney Da Tiger from house of Aviance rule the dance floor with a swiftness and blend in as well as rocking the decks with some cool old jams and work it up with some hot Afrocentric, upbeat mixes. Special thanks to Ray Vazquez for inviting other talents such as DJ Toney Da Tiger and give his followers to hear different flavors of dance/house music. Which today, many DJ’s are collaborating to keep the underground vibe alive. Like a the animal, DJ Toney Da Tiger quietly and distinctively grab the audience’s attention with swiftness. He hunts for beats to bring you into his lair quietly and clutches you with his mixes of deep, soulful, Afrocentric, techno, and classics beats. I hope you enjoy the interesting interview that DJ Toney Da Tiger and enjoy reading about his underground history and become one of his prey.

You stated spinning at an early age of 12, what were some of songs that influenced you then and later in your early career? When I first started out I was listening and playing around with tracks like Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam featuring Full force," Wonder if I take me home" then my brother in law from NYC gave me a cassette tape that had the song "Set it Off" by Strafe and from then I was hooked .

the last track “It’s our turn” by Project 4007 (DJ Duke Funk Train Mix) and the crowd was in grove and wanted more. I felt it was a great sense of accomplishment came over me and I knew I was HOME behind the decks. How do you prepare getting ready for a gig for an audience that doesn’t know you?
To prepare for a gig the first thing I think about is where am I playing in the lineup and the time slot. Where did you buy your records in Maryland when I always practice the night before to get into mood you were teenager? of making sure I got it together. Honestly don’t I use to buy my vinyl at 12 inches in DuPont circle know why I even create a set list because it never also every now and then I would pick up a few recseems to work. What was the music scene like in Maryland, Every DJ has great memories of great moments Philadelphia, and other states compare to New playing at Bars, lounges, Clubs, event and so on, York dance scene today? what were of your great memories? The Music scene in outside of New York is basically My greatest memory was my very first professional the same except for the hours the clubs closes much gig at Zei club in northwest Washington, D.C. The early than 4 am in morning. But back in days as party was a weekly party thrown by the lovely Deana teenagers we would to get to Sound factory and the Becker, whom I owe everything. Back then I network Limelight every chance we could get and would take by making tape mixes and Ms. Becker like it and gave that feeling back home. We also had DJs like Larry T me a break to play at Cub Zei. I remember playing and T-pro who would frequently make guest appearPage 90

think about playing or listening too like Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra. Which gave way to a period of time when I would play track which I called big band house like “Moondog” by Lament the Henrik Schwarz mix or “Low and Sweet” by Greenskeepers? What type of music do you enjoy playing the most? I think my favor style of music to play is South African house because there are so many great tracks and artists coming out of Africa now. Sometimes I feel like taking a South African track and mix with something dark plus techno it creates a great thumping beat that pulsates through the dance floor ances in the various night clubs which I feel shaped underground dance scene in Maryland. Another club called Track's in Washington DC on Sunday was deep house night and we were introduce to artist like Barbara Tucker, CeCe Peneston, and Roland Clark just to name a few. What fondest memories you have playing in New York as DJ? My fondest memory playing for New York crowd was when I decided to move to NYC. I played for my best friend Ayo Dawkins and her husband every year for Gay Pride Day. Every year the attendances would grow in to point it one of my main highlight of playing. Dawkins would always say how she loved that I would take different tracks and create a story with them with my blending skills.
What is House of Aviance? The house of Aviance is a family that empowers and constantly reminds it member to have an understanding of one’s self-worth regardless of the situation or circumstance that one has been dealt. http://houseofaviance.com/ What does a typical day look like when you’re getting ready to play for an event? My typical gig day is a day of relaxation not only bodies but also the mind. I try to do nothing the entire day leading up to performance time. I want to be in my best possible mind set when I spin. From the moment I play that first track I want everyone to feel the roar of the tiger… Besides playing music what else do you care about?
