Community Cares Aaron’s iPad Lending Library helps kids have fun during long hospital stays Aaron knows what its like to be a kid stuck in a hospital, getting chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Aaron was treated last year for cancer (stage 4 Ewing’s Sarcoma) at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood. He also knows how lucky he was to be surrounded by family, friends, love, and of course toys and games. Aaron’s 11 year old cousin, Sarah Clein, a student at Binks Forest Elementary, decided that she would like to help other children like Aaron by setting up iPad Lending Libraries in local hospitals. Through Team Aaron, Inc., Aaron and Sarah are accomplishing just that. Team Aaron seeks contributions in order to provide the kids with non-medical essentials. It is their goal to give kids fighting cancer a positive spirit, and a sense of normalcy.

Aaron was very lucky to have an iPad but unfortunately most hospitals throughout South Florida do not have iPads for children to use. Many parents do not have the resources available to them to purchase iPads while dealing with such difficult situations. Sarah was unable to see Aaron because of his compromised immune system during his 7 months of treatment so they interacted via Facetime. In October, 16 iPads were donated with the help of the Little Smiles, the Hollywood Police Department and private contributors to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital oncology floor in Hollywood. Ten more iPads were donated in November to Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Team Aaron is asking for donations of new OR used iPads or financial contributions to help purchase iPads, protective cases and iTunes gift cards. For more information, go to www.teamaaron.org.

Reconnect with Your Spouse BY SARA KENDALL

W hile supremely rewarding, being married with children can be a time-

consuming and exhausting life role when you’re in the middle of it. Juggling schedules, driving across town for afterschool activities, helping with homework, enduring long commutes, cooking dinner, and assisting in bath time often leaves no quality time for your significant other. Spouses tend to stop making the effort and their relationship gets lost in the family shuffle. Remember your spouse was there before you had kids and will be there once the last kid leaves home. It’s quite common to find yourself disconnected with one another while you are in the midst of giving your time and energy to good intentions – your children. Every relationship needs a boost now and then. We have 5 simple ways to reconnect and bring romance back into your life. Remember Flirting - Back in the day, flirting was a daily playful exchange between you and your soon-to-be spouse. Flipping your hair back, batting your eyes, and giving a sweet, shy smile have all become things of the past. Between diaper changes, wiping up

14 December 2013 | PB Parenting |

spilled milk, and chasing after little ones, flirting just doesn’t seem to be a part of your regular interactions with your husband. Rekindle the good ‘ole days and bring flirting back into your relationship. Acknowledging him in a flirtatious way will make him feel accepted and wanted and is a great way to make him feel good about himself. It may take a time or two, but he’ll likely respond to your actions in a very positive way and quickly reciprocate. A constant reminder of being interested in one another keeps the romance alive. Daily Check-ins - Keep the lines of communication flowing by taking a few minutes to see how each other are doing after a long day. This doesn’t have to be done immediately after walking in the door because a lot of people need a few minutes to decompress from their workday. But it is important to take some time to share new information about your day. Hopefully, he will share something about his day. If not, ask him. A little conversation will go a long way to strengthen your connection and keeps each other up-to-date on your lives

outside of your home. To change it up, in the middle of the chaos, grab your spouse and give him a long hug or a slow kiss. It’s just is a reassuring way to show him that you still have great interest in him and a fun way to check-in with each other amidst your hectic home life. Small Gestures - You can easily make your husband’s day with a small act of kindness. Write a love note and place where he will find it, run an errand for him or offer a foot rub at the end of the day. It is often the little favors that say the most. Be willing and get creative. Do something unexpected for your spouse. Your actions will speak volumes. Revive Date Night - Remember going on a date? A night just for the two of you doesn’t have to be a thing of the past even if you have been married for years. Make the effort to carve out some time just for each other and shoot for date night once a month. Hit a comedy club, attend a live music performance, or go to a wine tasting at a local wine shop. If you want to be really creative, try recreating a date from your courtship. It will bring back so many memories and some newfound heartfelt laughter. For most couples when children enter the scene, their relationship takes a backseat. Every relationship takes work, love, and nurturing. Put your relationship with your spouse back on top of your list of priorities. Both of you will feel loved, appreciated and desired. Start today and watch the sparks fly again. Combating Holiday Stress BY PATTI GILLIANO MSN

The holiday season is upon us and it is no wonder the feeling of stress creeps into our lives so insidiously. Over the next few weeks, the flurry of activity in the stores is abuzz, and merchandizing begins everywhere. We are blasted by media, signs, and mall teasers. Phone calls begin as families begin to discuss travel plans, dinners, and holiday traditions. Work demands are ever present, and while day to day routines already seem full, now on top top of that, the hustle and bustle begins and calendars fill with events, parties, and other holiday gatherings. Is it any wonder the stress begins to build up the back of your neck and muscles tighten around your shoulders and head causing tightness and perhaps a bit of a headache? The solution is to gear up for the next few months of flurry by having a tool kit of solutions to keep you happy, fit, and relaxed instead of stressed or depressed this time of year. We all know how busy things get, so first off set some realistic limits during the week. Block off time for yourself and commit to it, even if it is 2 hours on Tuesday night, and do something or nothing just for you. Actually, make time on the calendar like every other

appointment to commit to yourself. Second, set priorities to have some goals and timelines to keep you focused and on track. Realize too that the goals are just that and if you need to move things around, give yourself a break and be flexible. It will help you to know that some things can be moved and aid in taking off a little bit of stress. This time of year there are a myriad of things that can cause stress or depression. In some cases, people worry about “all of the family time,” and others are feeling a “loss of family or loved ones.” These two areas can be especially difficult because it may go far deeper than holiday bustle. In this case, the family togetherness can be dealt with in a variety of ways. Look to set timeframes that limit the exposure to those that can create a “dramatic” time. This may mean “stopping in” and “making the rounds,” and limiting visits so any deep discussions or lectures don’t have time to get started, while still allowing time to see family. For some, this time of year may represent the first holiday without a loved one, which is really hard to imagine how to get through such a loss. In

this case, all the more reason to stay active and surround yourself with others to talk through feelings.

12 Holiday Savings Tips BY SARA KENDALL

T

he holidays are always greatly anticipated and often the source of some of our happiest memories. However, if you’re not careful, holiday spending can wreak havoc on your family’s budget. It can empty your wallet and leave you with a pile of credit card debt ringing in the New Year with you. But, with a little planning, you can have a wonderful holiday season without missing any of the fun. Put these 12 holiday saving tips into action to save your family some money during the holiday season. Decide on a Budget First, you need to put a figure on how much you can spend. Write down every possible expense you could incur from gifts to entertaining to travel expenses. Review this list and trim costs wherever possible. Check the Closet Look through your holiday leftovers from last year. You could be surprised by what you will find. Quite likely, you already have plenty of wrapping paper, bows, gift bags, or décor. You might be

able to cross some items off your list, resulting in saving some cash. Go Minimalist Work with what you already have. If you find you only have three strands of working lights, then purchase a smaller Christmas tree that will work with less lighting. If you only have a few rolls of wrapping paper then buy smaller gifts. Think about skipping or cutting back on the outdoor lights and you could see a savings on your electricity bill. Decorate with the holiday décor you have and live with what you got. Sometimes, less is more. Send E-cards Completely eliminate paper cards and postage by sending e-cards. Not only is postage not required, but there is no charge for the cards either. There are a variety of websites for making an e-card, with many allowing you to add photos, music, or games. You can save some serious money with just a few clicks of your mouse. Make a Shopping List Think about all the people you have

to buy a gift. List everyone including family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and teachers. Allot amounts for each person. Never leave home without the list. Using cash to make your purchases will eliminate paying back hefty monthly interest charges on credit cards. Credit Cards Not everyone can afford to cover their holiday expenses with cash only. Start by making as many purchases as you can with cash. Then, think about credit cards as short term loans. Use the card with the lowest interest rate first. Figure out a doable monthly payoff over a given number of months. Pay it back each month and don’t skip a payment. Track Spending Sometimes, in spite of your best intentions, you can get caught up in the flurry of holiday shopping. Rushing around from store to store, getting

enticed by the deals, you can completely forget about keeping up with your spending. It is critical for you to stay on track to avoid overspending. Designate a place to put all your receipts, so you can regularly and easily add up the totals to see how you are doing. Homemade Gifts Another good way to reduce spending is by making homemade gifts. There are many creative ideas online, just search homemade gifts and you will find a plethora of ideas to choose from. Gifts made from the heart are special and usually cost much less than purchased ones. Give the Gift of You By giving the gift of your time, you can save a ton of money. Give your friend a free night of babysitting, take care of your brother’s dogs while they are away on vacation, or keep your sister’s children overnight, so she and her husband can go on an overnight getaway. Design redeemable certificates on the computer or by hand for your loved ones to unwrap. Meaning over Glitz It can be easy to get wrapped up in the holiday frenzy, but it’s important to remember the meaning of the season. No matter what religion you follow or holiday you celebrate, spending time with loved ones is free. There is no greater gift in the world than being with the ones you love. Start today and put your plan into action. By using these tips, you will spend less and save more. You will be ringing in the New Year with more money in your pocket and less credit card debt lingering with you in 2014. Sara Kendall is a freelance writer and mom of two daughters.
