Letter From The Publisher Happy 2012! New Year! New Beginnings! Happy 2012! Where did 2011 go? January is a time when many parents make New Year’s resolutions, start new endeavors, sign up for fitness plans — and hopefully stick with them. My resolution is to create an exciting new resource for Palm Beach County parents. I am proud to introduce PB Parenting to you. As any mom or dad can attest, getting the scoop about a furry meet and greet at the zoo or a free bounce house on the farm can turn a screaming, hair-pulling Saturday at home into a refreshing day outside — and maybe even a nap. Finding that perfect sippy cup or jogging stroller really does make a hectic life just a little less stressful. Each issue will spotlight fun local events and activities, while highlighting tips on parenting issues for families with children of all ages. Special editions will include: Party Planning, Summer Camp, Back to School and Baby & Maternity. PB Parenting will also provide an opportunity to get to know area retailers and companies with great products and services for busy families. My commitment is to bring all of this to you free each month in PB Parenting, available in glossy magazine print, online, on the iPad and on social networks such as facebook. Go online to www.pbparenting.com or www.facebook.com/PBParenting . There you will find us constantly engaging fans with the latest parenting news and family events in Palm Beach County. We will also offer fun contests and giveaways. PB Parenting will be distributed throughout Palm Beach County in convenient locations — medical offices, indoor playgrounds, children’s specialty and consignment stores, private schools and daycare centers, salons, attractions and more. I look forward to growing the PB Parenting family and encourage you to share your thoughts, opinions and feedback. Tell me what you think about the magazine or what you would like to see in print at info@pbparenting.com.

Happy Parenting!

Felonice Margasak Publisher

Quick bits How to Safely Treat Your Child’s Cough & Cold •

• •

• •

Call a physician or a pharmacist, if you have any questions about using cough or cold medicines in children 2 years of age and older. Only use the measuring spoons or cups that come with the medicine or those made especially for measuring drugs. Understand that using OTC cough and cold medicines are intended only to treat your child’s symptom(s). OTC cough and cold medicines do not treat the cause of the symptoms or shorten the length of time your child is sick. They only relieve symptoms and make your child feel more comfortable. Check the “active ingredients” section of the label. This will help you understand what “active ingredients” are in the medicine and what symptoms each active ingredient is intended to treat. Be very careful if you are giving more than one OTC cough and cold medicine to a child. Many OTC cough and cold medicines have more than one “active ingredient.” If you use two medicines that have the same or similar “active ingredients” a child could get too much of an ingredient which may hurt your child. For example, do not give a child more than one medicine that has an antihistamine. Do not use these products to sedate your child or make your children sleepy. Choose OTC cough and cold medicines with childproof safety caps, when available, and store the medicines out of the reach of children.

Q&A

Common Foot Questions from Pregnancy to Adolescence: Q. Can pregnancy affect your feet? A. Pregnancy can impact the feet in several ways, including: • Overpronation (ankle rolling in causing a flatter foot) • Plantar fasciitis (heel pain that usually occurs 1st step in the morning and eases up as you walk. When or if you walk excessively the heel pain returns when you sit and get up.) • Swelling/increased foot size (due to increased body weight and an increase in hormonal changes.) • Leg cramps and varicose veins • Ingrown toenails Q. How do I prevent foot/heel pain during my pregnancy? A. Stretching daily in the morning as well as before and after any exercise. Don’t walk barefoot and be sure to wear supportive low-heeled shoes. Conservative treatments such as physical therapy, foot orthotics, supportive shoes and minor toenail procedures can be beneficial as well. Q. Is there anything I can do about my swollen painful feet during pregnancy? A. Pregnant women often experience throbbing, swollen feet due to excess fluid build up (edema) in the feet from the weight and position of the baby. To reduce swelling, put feet up whenever 10 January 2012 | PB Parenting |

Q. When my baby is born is there something I should be aware of in terms of his/her feet? A. Your OB/GYN or pediatrician will examine your child for possible problems/disorders. You should also be aware that the baby’s heel will be pricked (usually within 24 to 48 hours) for a few drops of blood which are placed on a filter paper. Florida tests for 35 conditions. For a full list, see to www.doh.state.fl.us/ cms/nbscreen-disorder.html Q. How can I take care of my baby’s feet? A. Caring for your baby’s feet is easy but must not be ignored. Trim your child’s toenails with baby nail clippers fairly often, making sure to cut straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Also, be sure to thoroughly dry your baby’s feet after a bath, especially between the toes to prevent breakdown of your baby’s sensitive skin. Q. At what age should my child roll-over, crawl, and eventually walk? A. When physically ready, your child will progress. Comparisons with other children are misleading so don’t get hung up on numbers. On average, a baby should rollover between 4-8 months,

crawl between 8-12 months and eventually walk at 12-18 months. (According to the “American Academy of Pediatrics.”) Q. When should I put my baby in their first pair of shoes?

Getting’ Your Pre-Baby Body Back

! r e t t e b n e v e t u B

By Meghan Buser

A long 10 months has come to an end.

You have indulged in delicious foods you normally wouldn’t eat, endured sleepless nights, had less exercise than normal and gained natural weight that comes with growing a child. The baby is out and you have received approval from the doctor, yet you still have the same urges and same lack of motivation to get your shape back. What some moms may not realize is it is feasible to get an even better body back than before with just a bit more work, a little more motivation, patience, and most important, by setting a REALISTIC goal to achieve. Set a Realistic Goal Growing and having a baby can do a number on a woman’s body. Your skin stretches, you gain weight in different areas than before and your metabolism is all out of whack. Set a short term and a long-term goal that is possible for you to achieve where you won’t get disappointed but it is still a challenge. For example, on a short-term goal, each month challenge yourself to lose 3-5 pounds and 1-2 inches off your problem areas. By setting a realistic goal, it gives you something to strive for while tracking your progress and keeping you motivated along the way.

stars show us, you will not bounce back the next week after delivery. Your metabolism has changed, your body has changed, your priorities have changed. EXPECT anywhere from 3 months to maybe even a year to get your shape back and work a little bit harder to make it an even better body than before! Cardio & Strength Training Do you ever wonder how a man can do half the work it takes to stay in shape but show double the results a woman can? Lean muscle mass naturally will burn more calories throughout the day than fat, and men happen to have more lean muscle mass than woman. Women often make the mistake of just doing cardio and forgetting the strength training which helps build and maintain lean muscle mass. You will not get bulky from doing this. Woman do not produce the amount of testosterone men do to get bulky. This is a myth! Adding cardio and strength training into your

workout is an excellent plan to shape your body to better than before. The cardio will help you burn the fat and the strength training will tone and shape your body! Find a Routine and Stick to it Now that you are a mom, it is all about MAKING time for yourself. Whether it is at 6:00 a.m., 8:00 p.m., or little bits and pieces throughout the day, find a routine and stick to it. If you are committed to getting back to a better you, you will find the time.

Oftentimes as moms, we lose ourselves in being a mom, wife, “housekeeper”, etc. We forget to make time for ourselves and do things for ourselves. This is the one thing you can do for you, and by doing so, you will feel more energy and be a better mom. Getting in shape and being healthy will improve upon post-partum, your relationship with your husband, your children and your overall self–esteem. More importantly, you will set a great example for your family that being fit and healthy is the way to go! TIME OUT! “It doesn’t work! Why don’t I get results???!!!” By Dr. Michelle Borba

Time out is a discipline strategy in which a child is immediately removed from an activity for inappropriate behavior (like hitting, biting, defiance). Parents often complain to me that time out doesn’t work. When I dig deeper I find that there are typically four big no-nos they do. Turn these around and you’ll be more likely to get better results using time out. Here are the most common parenting Time Out mistakes and the solutions. Using the wrong place! Find a quiet place where the child is isolated but safe. Make sure he doesn’t receive attention from others and has no access to distractions like games, toys, computers, pets, food, TV, pals, phones. He’ll want to be there! Setting inappropriate time. The time length is one minute for each year of the child’s age (three years = three minutes, six years = six minutes, and so on). Giving attention. The single biggest parenting mistake is talking to the child during time out. Wrong move! Instead you must ignore, ignore, ignore. Any interaction with your child will only reinforce whatever misbehavior he is displaying. Your goal is to remove the attention from the child’s inappropriate action and not reinforce that misbehavior (which could increase its frequency until it becomes a bad habit). Inconsistency! Use time out anyplace and anytime your child displays the inappropriate behavior and the minute the child misbehaves (or as soon as convenient). Used correctly and consistently you should see a gradual diminishment of the

14 January 2012 | PB Parenting |

behavior you want to curb! The biggest parenting mistake I see is inconsistency. You try time out on Tuesday but let that hitting slide on Wednesday. I guarantee you won’t get the results because you are inconsistent with your response. Kids need consistency — they need to know what is expected. Your consistent response will make the difference. Kid behaviors can be changed but that change takes consistent parenting effort and a bit of time. In fact, learning any new habit (and stopping the old) usually takes a minimum of 21 days. So stick consistency to your plan at least 21 days. You should see a gradual diminishment of the old inappropriate behavior as the new more appropriate behavior kicks in. Also, pass your plan on to at least one other caregiver. You always get better results if you tag team (with your parenting partner or coach or relative or girlfriend or teach). And if you do not get the change or you see an increase in the behavior, it’s time to get help! Dr. Michele Borba is an educational psychologist, TODAY Show contributor, parenting expert and Mom. Parking Lot Safety Tips With the larger size and height of vehicles today, drivers are having an increasingly difficult time seeing young children around their vehicles in driveways and parking lots. Children are at greater risk than ever before. The Parking Pal is a wonderful aid in teaching young children safety in parking lots. Apply these rules to help keep children safer. • • • • • • • •

Teach children that vehicles can be dangerous and drivers cannot always see them. Teach them that parked vehicles might move, and teach them to stay safely away. Teach them NEVER to play around or behind a vehicle. Teach them never to play in driveways. Know where your children are in parking lots when loading and unloading. Never leave a child unattended around a moving vehicle, not even for a few seconds. Be especially careful during holidays or when parking lots are full. Always hold a child’s hand when walking to and from the vehicle in parking lots.

Can We Unplug ? s d i K r u O Cohen By Joshua

I

t’s hard to believe that a three year old can pick up a phone and know how to watch a video or play a game. Today’s children, whether they are toddlers, tweens or teenagers are way too plugged into electronics. What happened to the days of going outside and playing in your backyard, having a tea party with your dolls or building Legos! While we can point fingers and blame at technology gurus and all of the other companies that make these electronic toys, we should just be blaming ourselves. The bad news is that the use of technology is only getting worse as it enters our children’s daily lives via school and at home. The good news is there is something that we as parents can do. UNPLUG YOUR KIDS.

16 January 2012 | PB Parenting |

So this sounds easier said than done, but there is help. For over 100 years, children have been spending their summers enjoying the outdoors and doing so without electronics…it’s called Summer Camp. Today’s camps have taken the steps to rid our children of the electronics as they create their camper policies. Most camps prohibit campers from bringing any form of technology to camp. The idea is that they want your children to enjoy the natural surroundings and learn how to deal with people. What electronics are really doing to our children is forbidding them the opportunity of learning how to socially interact with the people around them. How many times have you been introduced to a child by their parents, and their heads are down with eyes fixated on the latest hand-held gadget. This behavior isn’t only happening to adults, they are doing it to their peers as well. Help your children take a break and send them away for the summer. Let the camp directors take the role of unplugging your child and you will reap

the benefits. Whether you send your children to a day camp or sleepaway camp for a few days or seven weeks, they will have a break from the computer and games and interact with their friends and peers. While Zuckerberg invented Facebook, the real facebook was invented when the first children went to camp and met new friends from new places and stayed connected throughout the summer and beyond. Just ask him yourself, he went to camp too! Joshua Cohen is the Director/Owner of Camp Cobbossee for Boys in Maine with his wife Jill. (www.campcobbossee.com) They live in the Wellington during the off-season and spend their summers in Maine with their son Jeffrey. They are also the founders of SCOPE Southeast (www.scope-southeast. org), a nonprofit organization that sends underprivileged children to summer camps. in Florida.

Uplug your Kids

Each Day With These Tips A Techno-Free Zone - Set aside time to unplug your kids. This could be the hour before bedtime or dinner. TVs, phones, radios, tablets and computers are all turned off! This goes for adults as well. Plan Ahead - Give them options. They can go outside, play board games, read a book, set up an arts and crafts project, work on school work - anything that involves not using an electronic device.

Can kids have this much fun with a video game?

Summer will be here before you know it! Don’t miss out on all the fun! Make sure to check out our Summer Camp Guide in the April, May & June issues! Contact us at info@pbparenting.com.

Go on a Field Trip - Kids going crazy without their “toys” ? Go bowling, head to the local library or bookstore, take a soccer ball or football to throw around your local park or playground. Stop the “I’m bored” before it happens. Make Sure You Unplug too! Kids learn by example, so set a good one and put down your “toys” too.
