Letter From The Publisher
Greetings, Is it hot enough outside for you? As a lifelong Floridian you think I would be used to the heat and humidity but I think all I have gotten used to is the air-conditioning! July can be so hot and with the kids out of school, we need to find something for them to do! PB Parenting is excited to bring you our 2nd annual installment of the Beat the Heat Guide. This guide is filled with great things to do with the kids to keep them busy (and cool) inside and out! It is a handy resource not only for July but year round in the Florida sun! You can access our guide anytime on our website at www.pbparenting.com under directories. You can also find our Summer Camp Directory there too! Many camps offer weekly even daily sessions and still have space. Summer time brings lots of extra free time, which means children can test heir boundaries via the Internet and TV. Turn to page 8 for tips to keep them safe while they are “surfing” this Summer. Last month was a busy month for PB Parenting, we had so much fun at Organic Movement’s open house and the grand opening of the newly renovated South Florida Science Museum and Aquarium that we decided to share some photos in a new section called PB Pics. Do you have a photo you would like to send us of fun times you’ve had in Palm Beach County? We would love to see them! Please email us at info@pbparenting.com Enjoy the Summer, August will be here before you know it and we will be gearing up for back to school. Happy Parenting!

class. All instructors have background checks, professional development and CPR training.
Mauricio Andrade and Luis Barrio, the owners of Little Strikers came to South Florida from Venezuela to revolutionize soccer instruction starting at an early level. There are many companies that offer soccer in South Florida, but what sets Little Strikers apart is their approach. “Most soccer programs do not teach specific skill development,” explained Mauricio Andrade. Mauricio believes that the education fundamentals of soccer are the key to successful instruction. Not only are children having fun with encouraged sharing, team spirit and friendship; they are learning how to play the game!
“Skills are taught sequentially, we don’t expect children to just go play soccer. It is more important to us that children have knowledge and feel confident when playing,” said Luis Barrio, “Sports are an incredible way to keep children healthy and fit…but we can’t forget about having fun. Our passion is teaching soccer, our goal is to make soccer every child’s passion”.
Children develop their fine and gross motor skills through this educationally based program. Passing, kicking, dribbling and blocking are just a few of the fundamentals children work on.
With locations in West Palm Beach and Boca Raton, summer registration is open! Locations in Parkland and Wellington are coming soon! For more information please visit www. littlestrikers.us or call 561-288-0597. Call to sign up for a session or a free trial class! Also, visit Little Strikers on Facebook and “like” them.

Safety Council of PBC, Inc. reminds parents about the Baby in Back! program, which helps prevent parents from leaving their children in hot vehicles.
We keep seeing the headlines and news stories about children dying after being inadvertently forgotten in a hot vehicle. The story hits close to home as well as nationally. It has happened to fanatically organized parents. It has happened to all ages and ethnicities. In the last 10 years, it has happened to a dentist, a police officer, a soldier, a clergyman, an assistant principal and a pediatrician.

Safe Summer “Surfing” Free time during summer gives kids ample opportunities to test boundaries as they explore the Internet (on both the home computer and their mobile device), talk and text with friends on their smartphones, and scan countless viewing choices on TV. There are easy-to-use, effective tools available today that allow parents to stay in the driver’s seat of their children’s TV, Internet and wireless activities. Here’s a quick primer from AT&T: Get tech savvy. Ironically, the first step in this process is decidedly low-tech: Talk to your kids. You have to be proactive in discussing what technologies they’re using and how they’re using them. Armed with this knowledge, you can easily find out what parental controls are available. AT&T Smart Controls is one example that brings together information on the privacy and protection features available to subscribers of the company’s high speed Internet, TV and wireless services. Surf smart. From social networking sites and chat rooms to online gaming and other sites, today’s kids know their way around the Net. But most Internet Service Providers (ISP) offer parents tools to block access to specific Web pages as well as to services such as e-mail, instant messaging, chat groups and message boards. Be wireless smart. As technology expands, so do the possibilities for misusing cell

phones. This may take the form of your child making inappropriate calls or downloading expensive or inappropriate material. Many carriers offer features that allow parents to block select incoming or outgoing calls to the phone and to install “sleep” functions so that calls after a certain time of night do not ring. Instead, messages go directly through to voice mail. With most people accessing the Internet from their smartphones today, carriers such as AT&T offer parental controls to restrict mobile phone access to web sites containing content that is inappropriate for children, as well as to restrict purchase of premium subscriptions and downloads such as games, ringtones and graphics. Parental controls provide your child with the freedom and security of a mobile phone while allowing you to set sensible boundaries for your child. There also are location-based services that let users locate a family member’s cell phone on a map via Web browser on a PC or a mobile device. These types of tools give parents peace of mind while they’re away from their children. Watch smart. The bad news is that with hundreds of channels on the air, there are more inappropriate viewing options for kids than ever before. The good news is parents have more control than ever over what their kids are watching. Virtually all TV service providers offer tools to filter movies based on MPAA ratings. Many
even offer additional programming protection based on expanded ratings such as violence, language, nudity and sexual content. Looking to go one step further? Some providers also enable you to prevent your children from viewing selected channels unless they enter the correct password. In the end, a parent’s responsibilities in overseeing their child’s technology use are not much different than in other areas of daily life. Set clear boundaries on appropriate and inappropriate uses of technology. Then monitor their activity and be consistent with enforcing rules. Above all, don’t be intimidated. Even if you’re less savvy about the technology than your children, you have the tools to make your job simpler in an ever more complicated world. Parents can find more information on technology safety and parental controls at www.att.com/smartcontrols.com or www.pta. org/parent_resources.html.

The Benefits of Early Intervention Approximately one in every 88 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the U.S. each year. While it can be overwhelming to find out your child could have autism, identifying the symptoms, receiving an early diagnosis and seeking treatment from a very young age can greatly help your child’s development. “Autism spectrum disorders are a heterogeneous group of complex developmental disorders that appear within a child’s first three years of life,” says Dr. Roberto Tuchman, Director of Autism and Neurodevelopment Program at the Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Outpatient Center. Here, doctors and medical professionals provide early diagnosis and interventions for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders. Identifying the disorder early on—by around 18 months— can be very beneficial during these key development stages.
10 July 2013 | PB Parenting |
Understanding Autism “There is no medical test to diagnose autism,” says Dr. Tuchman. But being aware of developmental milestones during a child’s first eighteen months of life can help parents identify a problem. For instance, common milestones in infants and toddlers include the ability to follow and react to faces, responding to a name, pointing, and sharing their excitement with others. Children within the autism spectrum miss these milestones, and may also experience difficulty in social interactions, communicating verbally and nonverbally, and become reserved when it comes to pretend play. Parents of autistic children are almost always the first ones to pinpoint something “unusual” about their child, usually about the time the child turns 2. Treatment for autism spectrum disorders can be helpful at any age, but scientific studies show that stepping in at an early age can bring about the best results for children with developmental disorders.

Sometimes parents don’t notice symptoms until later, or their child develops at a normal rate with no symptoms. “In certain cases, a child may develop normally before age 1 or 2, then have a slowing or stagnation in development or even lose his or her language and social skills,” said Dr. Tuchman. This exception can happen, but the point is to go directly to your pediatrician for help if there are any concerns about your child’s development.

Grand Opening of South Florida Science Museum & Aquarium To thank the public for their support as the South Florida Science Museum expanded and made changes, the venue hosted a free community day last month. Festivities included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and free admission for the public. The special day allowed the science museum to showcase the newly expanded center as well as celebrate the official name change. The beloved nonprofit spent the past year
and $5 million in capital campaign funds on increasing its exhibit space, tripling the size of its aquarium and adding new permanent exhibits including Science on a Sphere. The museum has grown from 20,000 to 30,000-square-feet. For more info about South Florida Science Museum & Aquarium, go to www.sfsm.org

Backyard Water Play BY SARA KENDALL A family’s backyard can be a year-round haven for outdoor fun. During the summer months, there will be days when the heat is unbearable and your kids will want to have nothing to do with being outside. You’ll likely hear “It’s too hot outside to play.” However, you can easily turn their thinking around by adding water. Try these 5 fun games to create an action-packed water park in your own backyard. Your sweltering backyard will take on a whole new kind of fun and your kids will forget how hot it is. Water Balloon Toss It is similar to the classic Egg Toss game. Instead of two children tossing an egg back and forth, it’s a water balloon. Two children face each other about a foot apart. Begin by tossing the water balloon to each other. After each child has a turn tossing, everyone takes a small step back and each child tosses again. It will become harder with each step taken back. Play until the balloon breaks. If you have an odd number of children arrange them in a circle together and toss between

players. It will be more of a challenge than a competition. Dribble, Dribble, Drench! This game is a water version of Duck, Duck, Goose. Have the kids sit in a circle facing each other. Place a bucket of water in the center. Choose someone to be “It”. This child goes to the bucket to retrieve a water soaked sponge. The “It “ child walks around the circle and says “dribble, dribble “above the heads of the other children until “It” chooses who they want to drench. “It” says “drench” and squeezes out the water on this person. “It” runs around the circle and tries to sit in the empty spot before they get tagged by the person drenched. If they get tagged, they are out. Play until there is one person left, the winner. By the end, everyone will be drenched and definitely cooled off. Sprinkle Freeze Dance An oscillating sprinkler is needed for this game. Turn up the music and everyone dances around the sprinkler while trying not to get wet. Stop the music and everyone
freezes in their spot. Allow enough time for the sprinkler to make a pass. If the sprinkler gets someone wet they must remain frozen. If they move, they are out. Turn back on music for another round. Keep this up until there is only one child left who isn’t wet – they’re the winner! Water Limbo This well-known game comes alive with a stream of water in place of a limbo pole. A hose with a nozzle is required to make a straight, steady stream. Each child makes their way under the stream without touching the water. Lower the stream after every child makes a pass under it. Children can start off by walking under it while arching their back. Over time the wet grass can get slippery, a child could easily lose their footing and get hurt so be careful. Go loose on the rules and encourage them to crawl like a baby, hop like a frog and sliver like a snake. Water Freeze Tag This all-time favorite game takes on a new
twist - you tag someone by squirting them with water. Thoroughly rinse an empty dish detergent bottle and fill with water. Now you have your tagger device! An important rule is to aim only from the chest down. Getting sprayed in the face could lead to unwanted water in the eye and some hurt feelings. The child who is “It” will squirt at other players. If a child gets wet from a squirt, then they must freeze in place. To be unfrozen another player crawls under their legs to unfreeze them. Play until every child has a turn of being “It”. So, when the days are hot and your kids still want to be outside, you now have 5 fun ways to keep them cool. Keep in mind they will be out in the sun, so coat them in sunscreen and have water on hand to stay hydrated. These fun new backyard activities will help keep your kids active, out of the house and smiling all summer. Sara Kendall is a freelance writer and mother of two daughters.
