Photo-OP By Jackie Hull It is summer and lots of fun things are happening in your lives. Day trips to the zoo, picnics with bounce houses, yummy foods and family outings are being captured with your camera for future trips down memory lane. A close up opportunity approaches….FLASH! Gotcha! Are you aware that this picture may also be an indicator that the person you just took that picture of may have an eye disorder such as retinoblastoma or one of several different pediatric eye diseases? If the pupil of the eye is shown as white instead of black or red, you may want to take this person to see an eye specialist. Retinoblastoma is a form of cancer in the retina of the eye. Untreated, it could lead to blindness and even death. Early diagnosis has a very high rate of being successfully cured and in most cases leaving the person with good vision. Approximately 350 children a year are found to have this condition in the United States. It is no respecter of persons – there is no racial, gender or ethnic basis for the occurance.

The Benefits of Swim Lessons for Infants Swim lessons are an ideal method of
introducing your infant to movement stimulation at an early age. Scientific studies show that active movement at a very young age facilitates brain development, intellectual achievement, motor development, sensory integration and the building of self-esteem. An infant’s brain is a fertile field for stimulation and much of the brain’s pathways and connections are developed before the child’s 3rd birthday. When an infant is put in the water they begin to develop skills that are a continuation of what they experienced in the womb. Surprisingly, many babies who cannot sit up or walk can float and hold their breath under water. Swim lessons help infants to learn buoyancy, balance and breathcontrol. With these new experiences, the synapses in the neurons of the brain are stimulated and development occurs. When babies are placed in water they also experience moments of freedom in a some-what gravity free environment

and are freer to exercise all muscles. This enhances their overall balance, strength, coordination and endurance. Through swim lessons, gross muscle skills are developed which helps in the mastering of other physical skills such as walking. Swim lessons can also strengthen bonds between a parent and a child. During “mommy and me” lessons, a parent is on the same physical plane as the baby providing auditory, visual, emotional, intellectual, and physical stimulation that enhances bonding and social development. The baby has focused, uninterrupted attention of the parent for the duration of the lesson. In these group lessons there also a social interaction with peers and other adults which can be quite beneficial. Lastly, swim lessons at an early age help infants: • Be more alert and perceptive of their surroundings. • Be more independent and aware of their own capabilities and limitations.
• • • • •
Be more secure as a result of increased bonding. Be more confident as a result of early mastering of physical skills. Be more attentive and develop a greater concentration span. Be more flexible when adjusting to new social situations. Be more healthy through regular exercise which causes healthier appetites and better sleeping patterns.

By: Alexie Carnes, MS
After a long day of work stress, running errands and picking up children from various extracurricular activities and getting everyone home you hear a loud crash! You walk into the room and see a broken glass on the floor and juice all over the place. What a mess! You immediately begin to feel anger and frustration rise up and take control of you. You yell, “I can’t believe you brought that juice in here! You know better! Now look at this mess I have to clean up! Go to your room right now!” While you are cleaning up you think, “They know juice does not belong in the living room.” ”Why are my kids so good at pushing my buttons?” “How do they always know exactly what to do to get me angry?” “They must be doing this on purpose to upset me.” If you are a parent, you have uttered these words, or at least thought them, once or twice. And it’s okay! But the question is are they pushing your buttons on purpose or is something else happening? Here is the answer. Most of the time, your kids are not trying to push your buttons, they are not trying to upset you, and although they know some of what makes you angry, it is hard to remember it all. Ways to stop button-pushing behaviors. Decide if what your child is doing is really against the rules or if it is just a behavior that you find annoying. If the behavior is against the rules, address the behavior right away. Remember, it is the behavior that pushes your buttons, not your child. Discipline your child for the behavior not for “being annoying” or for pushing your buttons. If the behavior is not against the rules and is just annoying to you (i.e.: talking out loud to their toys while they play), find another part of the room to be in until your child has finished with the behavior.
16 July 2012 | PB Parenting |
Ask yourself, why does this push my
buttons? Is it me or is it them? What about the behavior is pushing your buttons? Ask yourself, “Am I feeling okay?”, “Am I having an adult tempertantrum because I am tired after a long day of work and still have a million things to do before I get to go to bed? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, that means it is time for you to take a step back, take a deep breath and then address the behavior or issue. We tend to forget that when we are under the weather, tired or exhausted, sometimes the worst version of ourselves appears. Who usually encounters that person? Our kids. Just think about how they are when they are tired and have had a long day. Don’t they have more tantrums then? Guess what, you do too. And how much worse would things be for you if you had someone yelling at you when you were feeling sick, tired or flat out exhausted? Be aware of how you are feeling before disciplining your children. Every time your kids engage in a button-pushing behavior, look at it as an opportunity for them to learn and for you to practice teaching. Kids get things wrong. We know, one day or another, there are going to be opportunities to have our buttonspushed. What if you looked at it differently? Every time your kids do something wrong, they are learning!! They are learning what not to do, how not to do it, what makes mom or dad mad and what makes mom or dad give them a little more freedom. Remember, you are your kids’ first teacher. They learn from you what is okay to do and what is not okay to do. The most important thing you can do for your child is to be consistent! If something is not okay (taking a glass of juice to the living room instead of drinking it in the kitchen) once, make sure that it is not okay all the time,
every single time it comes up. Nothing teaches kids better than consistency and predictability. If you are consistent, then you are predictable. Being predictable is not a bad thing! If juice in the living room means a consequence consistently, then your kids can predict if they break that rule, they will have a consequence and they will, most often, chose not to take that chance. Button-pushing behavior stopped! So remember, it is not always about button pushing, getting under your skin or just being annoying. When you feel your buttons being pushed ask yourself, “Is it me or is it them?” And remember most of all, your kids are learning. They are learning how to find their way around in the world. They’re learning what is okay to do and what is not okay to do and you are their first teacher! If you still aren’t able to get those button-pushing behaviors to stop, it might be time to get some help. Alexie Carnes is the founder and owner of One2One Life and Parenting Coaching. Alexie has years of experience working with parents, children and teens from all over the world. Alexie holds multiple degrees in family and child development and counseling psychology.
