Letter From The Publisher

Greetings, Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and moms-to-be! We hope your day is spent being pampered and taken care of. In honor of moms, we have dedicated our May issue to you! We have over $700 in giveaways just for Moms, see page 6 and enter on our facebook page. Sometimes it isn’t a gift that’s special, but rather the gift of time. On page 14, we have tips for creating moments for yourself. We all get busy and sometimes just need to take the time to relax. Speaking of busy, check out our Busi-Moms feature on page 8! Being a mom is already a full time job, and many women add juggling a business too. We talked to local business moms who did just that and started an ice rink, indoor playground, art and dance studio, theatre and photography business from the ground up. Maybe it will inspire you to be a Busi-Mom as well. Over a year and a half ago, I was also inspired and launched PB Parenting. After many years of working in advertising and publication, I decided to launch my own magazine. When my family moved to Palm Beach County three years ago, I noticed a need for local parenting information. I am always researching and looking for new things to do or places to take the kids and I am happy that I can now share all that information with our readers. We are run entirely by moms. PB Parenting wouldn’t be the publication it is today without the help of my staff especially my Advertising Director, Jennifer Preville, also a mom of two, with a background in magazine advertising. She equally shares my passion for publications and family. Together, we are juggling 2 kids each all under 5 years old, magazine deadlines, school drop off, sick days and more. But we have a great time and balance each other out . With my creative side, Jennifer’s business side and the help of our new Account Executives Abbie and Courtney (also moms), we make an excellent team! Happy Mother’s Day!

Community Cares May is Foster Care Awareness Month

Happy Mother’s Day to all the foster moms out there! They provide a safe home to the approximate half a million children in foster care. In Palm Beach County, at any given time, there are 600 children living in foster care families. Foster parents provide temporary homes for children whose own homes have been determined unsafe. Children range in age from newborn infants to teenagers. When children enter foster care, they have often experienced the most serious forms of family breakdowns or abuse. Foster & Adoptive Parents Association of Palm Beach County is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that offers one of a kind services to Palm Beach County. As part of their services, they maintain a children’s closet with gently used clothing. Each school age child receives a back to school book bag and school supplies. Foster families, Guardian ad Litems and case workers are able to utilize new shoe vouchers, hair cut vouchers and unlimited use of an equipment closet stocked with used strollers, cribs, car seats, head lice treatment, etc. To help the FAPAPBC, you can donate your time, goods, or funds to provide items and care. All donations are tax deductible. You can view a list of new or gently used items that are needed, volunteer opportunities, or what your donation can provide a foster child on their website, www.fapapbc.org Do you know a deserving organization that needs to spotlighted in Community Cares? So that night when Joey went to bed, Francesca sat down and started to develop the ideas she wanted for a family oriented indoor playground. She began to work 22 hours a day developing ideas, researching, designing floor plans, finding manufacturers and vendors, and looking at spaces. “My husband Michael, and our son, Joey, were very supportive, “ added Francesca, “but it took many hours of my time away from them. Even though I felt badly about being so wrapped up in the project, I knew in the long run it would be a great opportunity for my family to be together and to help Joey blossom into the very sociable, well rounded child he is today. “ On February 3, 2012, the 14,000 square foot space was turned into Joey’s Outback Adventures (named after Joey, of course). It’s an indoor playground with interactive fun for families with a large variety of exciting activities including inflatable fun, games, rides, birthday parties and more. “I still work 7 days a week coming up with new ideas to try to build our business, and even though my husband and I work the business with Joey by our sides every day, I still feel as though I don’t get enough time with him. If we hadn’t adopted Joey, there would be no Joey’s Outback. Joey has always been my inspiration and continues to inspire me every day. “

passion than acting. In the summer of 2005 her father-in-law donated space for her to open Sol’s Boca Raton black box theatre. Rosalie tells us that starting Sol was a challenge! “But the most important secret to raising children while working 12 - 14 hour days is to be honest with them.We worked and played together.” Both her daughters, Caitlin and Sara, and her husband Keith, donated countless hours to the theatre in whatever capacity was needed from cleaning, ushering, building sets, acting, or stage managing. It’s true that families who work and play together stay together. Rosalie adds, “Tempers were often heightened and flared due to stress & exhaustion ... so to love and forgive was crucial. Now that both girls are out on their own, there are times that I

find myself resentful that I can’t have back the huge amounts of time that I had with my girls, but then, I walk into the theatre and see the many troupe members’ and their parents’ & siblings’ faces and I realize that the Grant family simply has a much larger family than most others .” Ready for a Close Up Rhea Lewis knew while a corporate career path might be lucrative, it wasn’t going to be the right fit for her. After the birth of her son, things began to change and her priorities changed. Rhea added, “I was no longer driven to succeed in the corporate world. Family and my son was more important to me. “ She began exploring her creative side and rekindled a passion she had for photography and started her own business in 2004. Rhea began photographing families and children, mainly who she met through her son and his school.

“While he was young and through his middle school years, I felt it was very important for me to be active in his schools while still being able to build my own business. This was not easy, but since I could make my own schedule and had no boss, I was able to do it. “ Rhea adds that “it would have not been possible without the support of her husband. Having a supportive spouse is extremely important when making this kind of transition. Having those years with my son was priceless. It was absolutely the right thing for me to do, I have no regrets.” One piece of advice Rhea wanted to share is to try not to fall into the super mom stereotype trap. If you do you will definitely burn yourself out. Knowing your limitations and getting help for those things that you just can’t manage on your own is crucial; like cleaning the house, taking care of the lawn, etc. The most important things is the quality time you get to spend with your family. Create Moments Just for You 45 Amazing Ideas for Busy Moms to Relax and Recharge

T

he endless pressures and demands of motherhood can take up most of your time in a day. It’s natural to feel like your children consume all of your attention. That may even be reality, but it’s not healthy for them or you. Carving out some time just for you is important and there’s no need to feel guilty about it. Yes, we all want to be a good mom, but taking care of ourselves will make us better moms for our children, as well as better spouses and friends. Taking just a 15-minute hiatus from your hectic schedule each day can give you exactly what you need. Start small with a 5-minute break and build up to having a few hours all to you. Even if it means waking up a bit early or staying up later. Here are 45 ways to help you find some time to recharge and re-energize. You won’t have to break the bank either. Make it happen, you deserve it! 1. Wake up early before the daily chaos begins and enjoy the sunrise. 2. Sit on your porch and sip your favorite hot beverage. 3. Start a low-intensity stretching and flexibility routine. 4. Go for a stroll – not a power walk – in your neighborhood. 5. Call an old friend you haven’t spoken to in a long time. 6. A Mammogram for Mother’s Day Give Mom the Gift of More Birthdays

This Mother’s Day forget the flowers and

the chocolates! The American Cancer Society is suggesting people talk to their moms about the importance of getting screened for breast cancer. While it may not sound like a traditional Mother’s Day gift, having a simple conversation about getting tested could help save a life. If you are 40 or older, the American Cancer Society encourages you to get a mammogram. In addition, health advocates are urging all moms to talk to their health care providers about getting screened for breast cancer and to better understand their personal risk. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Although the causes of breast cancer are still unknown and can’t be changed, there are many factors including being a woman (men can also develop breast cancer), advancing age, and family history that may increase someone’s risk for breast cancer. There are certain lifestyle changes that can curb the risk of breast cancer. These include being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, reducing alcohol use, and getting recommended cancer screenings. West Boca Medical Center introduces comprehensive breast care services at the new Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging. The focus of the center is to provide one location for all aspects of breast care including prevention, early disease detection,

diagnosis and treatment of breast conditions. Care is centered on treatment techniques derived from a high caliber of diagnostic services. Patients can expect the on-site patient navigator and specially trained staff to treat and coordinate all aspects of their care with compassion and sensitivity in an upscale setting. “West Boca Medical Center is dedicated to treating breast disease in an atmosphere that is centered on the whole woman and her distinctive needs,” commented Mitch Feldman, Chief Executive Officer of West Boca Medical Center. “We want patients to feel confident when selecting our center that they will be receiving high quality care in a comfortable environment.” Mammography is a low dose X-ray that is used to take images of the breasts. Doctors use it to help detect and diagnose breast disease in women. Mammography can find changes in the breast much earlier than you or your physician can feel them. This means that breast cancer may be found in an earlier, more treatable stage. A screening mammogram takes views of both breasts and usually takes about 30 minutes. The patient will be asked to wait while the technologist views the images to see if more are needed. For more information on the Breast Center at West Boca Diagnostic Imaging, call 561-417-7920, or visit www.TheBreastCenterBocaRaton.com

A Dance Studio for All Organic Movements has been a life-long dream for Courtney Mullen and last year it finally came to fruition. After she had her daughter in 2011, Courtney realized that she wanted to provide a place not only for children to dance, but for adults and teenagers too. “Pregnancy, post-partum, menopause, seniors— each of these stages of life offers challenges to attaining and maintaining a physical emotional and mental sense of well-being. I’ve spoken to so many students who are afraid to come to class, for fear of being judged by others. I don’t want your average size woman to feel that she has to be a “ballerina sized 2” before she can come to class. “ Courtney strives to create a safe environment where women of all shapes and sizes can come to learn. Her studio offers classes in dance, yoga, music, and other movement arts for students of all ages: from parent and child starting at 6 weeks to group

classes for dancers 2 1/2+ years, to adult open enrollment classes. Courtney adds that one of the joys of teaching parent and child classes is the opportunity to bring her daughter to class! “She is a huge help in showing both parents and babies how to exercise together while bonding! “ When asked about being a mom and a business owner, Courtney replied, “Being a mom is a full-time job, with overtime! But, it’s a job I wouldn’t trade for anything else in the world. Owning and running your own business is equally as time-consuming and incredibly rewarding. When my daughter was born, she became my top priority. I have been incredibly blessed with the love and support of my husband, my sister, family, friends, and community as a whole, So I’ve been able to balance both. It’s still difficult. There are a lot of late nights, early mornings, and meetings with a sleeping baby strapped to me in her Ergo carrier!”
