Letter From The Publisher Greetings, School is over! Summer is officially here! We made it through another school year. The kids and I are ready for some lazy days of summer and won’t be missing that 6:15 AM alarm for a bit! We are always excited for the first week of summer, and sometimes we make it to the second week before the kids’ boredom inevitably arrives and the whining begins. What to do? Check out page 8 for ways to beat the summer boredom before it fully kicks in! Another alternative includes signing up for some or more summer camp, it’s not too late! There are many great camps in the area that still have openings. Be sure to check out our Summer Camp Directory which begins on page 18. I have some weeks of camp booked in the middle of July to give me a little bit of a break mid-summer. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there! Last month, moms had their date now it is your turn. PB Parenting didn’t want you to feel left out so we compiled a list of some great local ideas with the kids! BY SARAH LYONS After the end of the school year excitement fades and the thrill of a trip to the pool wears off, I begin to notice the first signs of summer boredom settling in. The kids start to bicker, they seem to be drawn more to electronics and less to fun outings, and getting them to pitch in around the house is a chore in of itself. After checking the calendar and noting that the first day of school is still many weeks away, something has to be done to battle the boredom. Change the scenery When the kids seem antsy and bored, try a change of scenery for a quick mood adjustment. Go for a walk, play in the backyard, hop into the car and do some errands, or even play in a area of the house that you don’t commonly use for play. We all get stir crazy if we stay in the same place too long. Take a day trip Speaking of changing the scenery, consider taking a day trip to break up the long summer days. Explore local attractions or travel a few hours to visit a nearby city. A trip to the zoo, amusement park, museum, or water park can give you and the kids something to look forward to and break up the boredom. If a bigger day trip isn’t in the budget, pack a lunch and spend the day at neighboring town’s park. Google or check out PB Parenting’s event calendar to see what free activities

are in your area. There are often seasonal activities that you may not be aware of. Give in to electronics It won’t hurt to give in to the desire to play on tablets and watch TV once in awhile. Plan a movie marathon or let the kids have extra screen time to help kill the boredom of the end of summer days. Take a trip to the library to get some new books and exchange reading minutes for extra screen time. The kids will be happy with their bonus game time and they will sharpen their reading skills before school starts. Pick a project If your house is anything like mine, there are always unfinished projects to work on. Clean the closets, sort the toys, or work in the yard. Teach your kids how to bake a cake or encourage them to plan a menu and cook dinner. You may need to assist depending on the age of your children. Give them chores they have never tried before so they have the benefit of learning something new and you gain the added bonus of a cleaner house. Put a crab in water An old friend once told me “Put a crab in water.” which is a solution for any age. A bath or shower can lighten anyone’s mood whether you are dealing with a fussy baby or an exhausted mom. Water play can also lighten the mood. Head to the pool, set up the sprinkler in the backyard, fill some

Summer Water Safety Pools and beaches mean summer fun and cool relief from hot weather. But water also can be dangerous for kids if parents don’t take the proper precautions. Nearly 1,000 kids die each year by drowning. And most drownings happen in home swimming pools. It is the second leading cause of accidental death for people between the ages of 5 and 24. The good news is there are many ways to keep your kids safe in the water — and make sure that they take the right precautions when they’re on their own. Keeping Kids Safe - Kids need constant supervision around water — whether the water is in a bathtub, a wading pool, an ornamental fish pond, a swimming pool, a spa, the beach, or a lake. Young children are especially at risk — they can drown in less than 2 inches of water. That means drowning can happen where you’d least expect it — the sink, the toilet bowl, fountains, buckets, inflatable pools, or small bodies of standing water around your home, such as ditches filled with rainwater. Always watch children closely when they’re in or near any water.
an adult swimmer within arm’s reach to provide “touch supervision.” Invest in proper-fitting, Coast Guardapproved flotation devices (life vests) and have kids wear them whenever near water. Check the weight and size recommendations on the label, then have your child try it on to make sure it fits snugly. For kids younger than 5 years old, choose a vest with a strap between the legs and head support — the collar will keep the child’s head up and face out of the water. Inflatable vests and arm devices such as water wings are not effective protection against drowning. At Home and at the Pool Water safety begins in the home. The bathroom is full of dangers for youngsters. Never leave a young child unattended in the bathroom, especially while bathing — even if the child appears to be well propped in a safety tub or bath ring. Put away hair dryers and all other electrical appliances to avoid the risk of electrocution.
Outside the home, being aware can help prevent accidents. Find out where the water hazards in your neighborhood are. Who has Don’t assume that a child who knows how to a pool or hot tub? Where are the retaining swim isn’t at risk for drowning. All kids need ponds or creeks that may attract kids? Tell to be supervised in the water, no matter neighbors who have pools that you have what their swimming skills. And infants, a young child and ask them to keep their toddlers, and weak swimmers should have gates locked.

Home Pools - Having a pool, pond, spa, or hot tub on your property is a tremendous responsibility when it comes to safety. Hot tubs may feel great to adults, but kids can become dangerously overheated in them and can even drown — so it’s best not to let them use them at all. Having a fence (one that goes directly around the pool or spa) between the water and your house is the best safety investment you can make and will help prevent pool-related drownings. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), fences should meet these standards: • Fences should stand at least 4 feet high with no foot or handrails for kids to climb on. • The slats should be less than 4 inches apart so a child can’t get through, or if chain link, no opening larger than 1¾ inches • Gates should be self-closing and selflatching, and the latch should be out of kids’ reach.

• You can buy other devices, such as pool covers and alarms, but these haven’t been proved effective against drowning for very young children, so fencing remains your best measure of protection. Making Kids Water Wise - It’s important to teach your kids proper pool and spa behavior, and to make sure that you take the right precautions, too. Let kids know that they should contact the lifeguard or an adult if there’s an emergency.
drowned while trying to retrieve playthings left in the pool. Water Safety Outdoors First, teach kids never to swim alone. Using the buddy system means there’s always someone looking out for you. Make sure your kids understand that swimming in a pool is different from swimming in the ocean — there are different hazards for each.
At Beaches: • Teach kids to always swim when and where Kids shouldn’t run or push around the pool a lifeguard is on duty. directions, such as walking instead of running and always going down the water slide in the right position — feet first and face up. A Coast-Guard approved life jacket is a good idea, too. • Know which rides are appropriate for your child’s age and development. For example, wave pools can quickly go from calm to rough, putting even a good swimmer in over his or her head. Younger children can be intimidated by older kids’ splashing and roughhousing. What to Do in an Emergency Whenever a child is missing, always check the pool first. Survival depends on a quick rescue and restarting breathing as soon as possible: • If you find a child in the water, immediately get the child out while calling loudly for help. If someone else is available, have them call 911. Check to make sure the child’s air passages are clear. If the child is not breathing, start CPR if you are trained to do so. When the emergency number is called, follow the instructions the emergency operators provide. • If you think the child may have suffered a neck injury, such as from diving, keep the child on his or her back and brace the neck and shoulders with your hands and forearms to help keep the neck from moving until emergency help arrives. This type of immobilization minimizes further injury to the spine and is best done by someone who is trained in the technique. • • • Keep the child still and speak in calm tones to keep the child comforted. Continue to watch for adequate breathing. Water play can be a great source of fun and exercise. You’ll enjoy the water experience more by knowing and practicing these safety precautions. © 1995-2018 . The Nemours Foundation/KidsHealth®. Reprinted with permission.

Health &Wellness The Dangers of Vaping for Adolescents and Adults BY DR. DIONNE SKERVIN Using e-cigarettes is quickly becoming a sweeping problem for adolescents and young adults all over the United States. It is imperative that parents educate themselves about this trend so they can in turn educate their children. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are devices that work by using a battery-powered coil to heat a liquid referred to as e-juice or e-liquid. The heating creates a vapor that the user inhales. The juice is flavored and has nicotine and other chemicals. These devices can look like car keys, memory sticks, pens, cigars, flashlights, pipes, and even asthma inhalers. The liquid solution usually has flavors that are appealing to children. They include: fruit flavors, candy, coffee, Belgian waffle, peppermint, bubblegum, or chocolate.1 There are even containers that hold the “e-juice” that are made to resemble candy. On May 1, 2018, the FDA warned over a dozen manufacturers and distributors to stop producing and distributing products that purposely mislead children into thinking that the toxic “e-juice” is harmless.2 The juice usually has chemicals such as anti-freeze, aldehydes, metals, tobacco alkaloids, hydrocarbons, diethylene glycol, and carcinogens like nitrosamines. They also contain diacetyl (the buttery flavored chemical in foods like popcorn and caramel that when inhaled can cause bronchiolitis obliterans “popcorn lung”an irreversible lung disease).3

There are other substantial dangers of these devices other than addiction. The liquid from these devices can contaminate the skin and lead to nicotine poisoning which can include vomiting, sweating, irregular heartbeat, seizures and tremors. Late effect poisoning includes hypotension, slow heartbeat, lethargy, and respiratory failure. Children who ingest these liquids can die. Severe nicotine toxicity in children have been reported with nicotine doses as low as 2 mg. Two mL of e-juice is enough to kill an average 20-month-old child. Secondhand vapor has been referred to by users as harmless water vapor, but this is not true. Known harmful toxins and carcinogens have been found in e-juice emissions. Some of these occur at higher levels than conventional cigarettes. Third hand vapor is a residual aerosol that remains on surfaces and in dust after the e-cigarette has been used.3 Parents who vape may mistakenly think that they are not exposing their children to harm. They would never smoke conventional cigarettes near their children, but because they think the vapor from an ENDS is just water, they may not be as careful. The long-term health affects are still unknown. The current age to purchase vape pens and cartridges is 18 years old, and congress is trying to have that age raised to 21. However, some adolescents are buying the product from online sources who do almost no checking for age.
Instead of waiting for more regulations, we are recommending that parents, teachers and pediatricians start providing more education to adolescents.
