Motivating School-Age Kids to Be Active Being Active Every Day Most of us know that kids are supposed to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. And 1 hour spent being active sounds like a pretty easy goal, doesn’t it? But as kids get older, increasing demands on their time can make getting that hour of exercise a challenge. Also, some kids get caught up watching TV, playing video games, and surfing the Internet. Even doing a lot of studying and reading, while important, can add to a lack of physical activity. On top of that, during these years kids often come to a fork in the road with sports. Those who are athletic might end up increasing their time and commitment to sports, which is great for their physical fitness. But more casual athletes may lose interest and decide to quit teams and leagues. Unless they find replacement activities, their physical activity levels tend to go way down. But being active is a key part of good health for all school-age kids. Exercise strengthens their muscles and bones and ensures that their bodies are capable of doing normal kid stuff, like lifting a backpack or running a race. It also helps control their weight and decreases their risk of chronic illnesses, such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Keeping Kids Motivated So how do you get kids motivated to be active, especially those who aren’t natural athletes? Kids can be fit even if they’re not winning sports trophies. The key is finding activities they enjoy. The options are many —

from inline skating and bike riding to tennis and swimming. Stick to Basics for 6- to 8-Year-Olds Expose younger kids to a variety of activities, games, and sports. Keep the focus on fun. A mix of activities at home and at school is often ideal. And be sure to include some free time for kids to make their own decisions about what to do. At this age, kids are still mastering basic physical skills, such as jumping, throwing, kicking, and catching. It will take a few more years before most can combine these skills the way many 11-year-olds can. So if your child is on a sports team, make sure you and the coaches are setting realistic expectations. Such expectations are also important when it comes to how much kids can handle mentally. Younger kids often are not ready for the pressure of competition, nor can they grasp complex strategy. Done correctly, team sports and other group activities can teach kids a lot about teamwork and good sportsmanship. 9- to 12-Year-Olds Are More Coordinated Older school-age kids usually have mastered basic skills and can start enjoying the benefits of being more coordinated. That means a kid who likes basketball isn’t wildly throwing the ball at the basket anymore, but is perfecting the free throw. They’re also better able to understand the rules. Parents of kids involved in team sports might want to talk about handling setbacks and losses, and remind kids that sports should

still be fun even as competition heats up. Whether it’s soccer or ballet, if your child doesn’t enjoy an activity or feels frustrated by failure, it may be time to switch to something else. That doesn’t mean the time spent on those activities was wasted. Instead, ask which ones your child would like to try next. Achieving this transition smoothly, without making a child feel like a failure, can prevent negative feelings about sports and physical activity in general.

Help Kids Find Their Niche When choosing activities, consider a child’s interests, abilities, and body type. A bigger child might be suited for football because size is an advantage. A smaller child might succeed at baseball or might consider a non-team sport. Personality traits and athletic ability combine to influence a child’s attitude toward participation in sports and other physical activities. Which of these three types best describes your child?

Nonathletes: These kids may lack athletic ability, dislike physical activity, or both. By this age, kids are aware of these differences and some may have even been teased about them. Casual athletes: These kids are interested in being active but aren’t star players, so are at risk of getting discouraged in a competitive athletic environment. Most kids fall into this category. Encourage them to remain active even though they aren’t top performers. Athletes: These kids have athletic ability, are committed to a sport or activity, and are likely to ramp up practice time and intensity of competition. Parents Can Make a Difference Kids look to parents for guidance, support, and encouragement. It’s very important to set a good example, so don’t groan about your own exercise — make it a priority and look for chances to be physically active as a family. © 1995-2019 The Nemours Foundation. What Type Of School Is Best For Your Teen? BY CHERYL MAGUIRE Next year my twins will be entering the ninth grade, their first year of high school. Their grades will soon “count” if they apply to colleges. The type of high school they attend will also be a considered factor by the college admission boards. I attended a typical public high school but my husband attended a public magnet high school and he went to a private school for elementary through middle school. We both feel as if we received a good high school education that prepared us for college, but since we attended different types of high schools we wanted to explore all of the options for our twins. Our different upbringings led to a discussion about what type of high school would be best for our twins. We also are considering if they should attend the same school since they have different needs and personalities. Before we are able to answer those questions, we researched all the different types of high schools. Even though I’m focusing on high schools, most of these options are also available at younger grades. Types of Schools Public Public schools offer free education to students living within the district. The funding for public schools is from local, state and federal tax dollars. These schools are supervised by local government authorities. There are different types and options 12 January 2019 | PB Parenting |

of public schools such as school choice, vouchers, tax-credit scholarships, magnet and charter schools. School Choice: Some public schools offer school choice which means you can attend a school outside of your district. The school is still free, but normally you provide transportation. Most schools have a limited number of openings. Students are selected based on a lottery system. Vocational Schools: Vocational schools are free public high schools that offer specific trade or career training programs. In the past, these programs focused on mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, and construction but now some schools offer other trades such as engineering, performing arts and nursing. Vouchers: Vouchers are a type of school choice. Currently, twelve states and Washington DC, have a voucher program. A voucher is issued to students who can then use it to pay for private school tuition. The amount of money received through a voucher varies by state and may cover part or all of the private school tuition. Tax-Credit Scholarships: This is another type of school choice. Seventeen states offer this program. These programs enable people and businesses to pay some of their state taxes to private nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations that issue scholarships to K-12 students. Similar to vouchers, a student uses a tax-credit scholarship to pay for private school

tuition. Magnet: Magnet schools are free public schools that are highly selective and competitive. Students must submit applications and complete tests to be admitted. Charter: Charter schools are free public schools that are independently run by teachers, parents, community leaders, and business persons. Charter schools do not adhere to the same rules and regulations of a typical public school. These schools receive funding from the sending public school, state and federal grants, and private fundraising. Private A student must pay tuition and submit an application to attend a private school. A private school is funded by student tuition payments, endowments, grants, and donations. Some private schools are affiliated with a religion.

Home School A homeschool is when a student is educated at their home by either a parent, tutor or an online program. States regulate and have requirements for homeschools. Factors to Consider When Making a Decision Cost: If you are unable to afford the private school tuition, which the national average is $10,000 per year, then you would be limited to the free public school options. Depending on the state you live in you could use vouchers or the tax-credit scholarships to help fund the tuition. Another consideration is the cost of transportation to the public school. School Size: The class size may be an important factor if your teen is easily distracted or requires assistance to learn. Even though public schools can make accommodations for students with special needs, sometimes a smaller class is more helpful to the child. A private school usually

offers small class sizes. How Does Your Teen Learn: If your teen is more of a hands-on learner, then they may benefit from attending a vocational school, charter school or other similar less traditional public schools. Whereas if your child thrives from competition, they might benefit from attending a magnet school. Friendships: Friends are a key component for teens in developing their identity. Through their friend relationships, they can learn about trust, respect, and acceptance. If you are considering other schools you should have your teen visit for the day to see how they interact with the other students. Also find out about the social clubs, sports and other activities offered. School Reputation: There are many different resources for comparing a school’s reputation including the school’s graduation rate, spending per pupil and college readiness. Some websites that review these factors are

What Will We Decide? After my twins receive their grades this year, we will then determine if their educational needs are best being served at their current school. We will discuss with them the factors such as class size and ways they feel they learn best. Then we will visit other schools in the surrounding area to compare those options to their current public school. We will also ask our twins which type of school they would prefer to attend since they are the ones that will be going there. Since we are actively involved in their education, hopefully, any school they attend will help prepare them for college or the workforce. How do I Help my Child with Autism Make Friends? BY VICTORIA SOBRINO-SANCHEZMS, BCBA, CAS Have you noticed that your child would rather play on their own than interact with others or play a game? Developing social skills will help your child to fit in in many social opportunities or events. For example, starting from simple turn taking with a peer to negotiating the best Pokémon card. Most children with autism have a desire to have friendships but lack fundamental social skills. What skills could you teach? For young children, we can start with imitation skills which is watching a peer and doing the same gross motor activity. Play skills could be sharing a toy or taking turns on a swing. Conversational skills such as asking questions, choosing and remaining on topic or using appropriate body language, are very crucial when it comes to communicating with friends. For older children developing problem-solving skills, and understanding social situations is vital. For example, there is a birthday party that your child was not invited to or their best friend ignoring them in a cafeteria. Would your child be able to deal with those situations appropriately and resolve the conflict effectively? Let’s talk about strategies to facilitate social skill development.

and encourage appropriate social skills. It can also create a special bond. Don’t forget to use your child’s special talent, humor, memorization skills or love for music for a chance to shine and be viewed as competent, talented or interesting. Video modeling and social stories are also effective tools with explaining social rules. Social skills training can help your child make friends, learn from others, develop hobbies and succeed in life.

5 Individual Sports for Kids BY SARAH LYONS

Parents want their kids to have an active and healthy lifestyle and many sign them up for team sports hoping to help them develop healthy lifelong habits and a love for psychical activity. While there are many benefits to team sports, they aren’t always the best fit. Individual sports can be a great alternative to playing on a team especially for kids who have ADHD, sensory processing disorder, or struggle with socialization disorders. Individual sports help kids stay active while building self esteem and focus. They also learn to set personal goals, and have the opportunity to work one-onone with the coach. Here are some great individual sports to try and the benefits for your child can gain by participating in each of them. Tennis Hand-eye coordination, speed, agility, gross and fine motor skills, and strong cardiovascular exercise makes tennis a great option for kids who like to keep moving, are quick on their feet, and want the individual attention that comes from one-on-one coaching. Martial arts Kids who want to learn discipline, respect for others and themselves, balance and coordination, self control,

28 January 2019 | PB Parenting |

and work on their listening and focusing skills should consider trying martial arts. This can also become a family sport as all ages are welcome in this activity. Gymnastics Gymnasts are known for their strength, coordination, flexibility, and discipline. Your child may never become an Olympic gymnast but the confidence and agility they will learn from participating in gymnastics will stick with them. Swimming Swimming is a great source of cardiovascular exercise. It also promotes strength, stamina, balance, better posture, and teaches water safety. Swimming, like martial arts, is a sport for all ages. A love of a sport like swimming can turn into a lifetime source of exercise and enjoyment. Running While running sports typically start in late elementary school or middle school, it is never too early or late to enjoy. Besides a great cardio workout, running helps develop physical, mental, and personal development as kids overcome challenges and set new goals in distance or time.

If none of the above sports are of interest, you may also want to research fencing, wrestling, cycling, dance, diving, or golf. Many of these sports allow kids to compete on an individual basis while contributing overall to a team. For example, kids competing in gymnastics will receive an individual score but the points go to an overall total for the team. This gives kids the support from teammates without the pressure of having to play on a team. Kids will learn to set and exceed their personal goals and also have the camaraderie that goes along with a team sport. If you notice your child is feeling pressure or frustration from participating in team sports, give an individual sport a try. Sarah Lyons is a freelance writer and stay at home mom of six children, including three year old triplets.
