Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Are you ready to party? PB Parenting is ready! Birthday parties can be a lot of fun but they also can be a lot of work! My staff and I put together this special themed issue twice a year to help take some of that work off your plate and make your life easier with some great tips and local resources to make that next birthday party a breeze! Make sure to Tag us on instagram @ pbparenting in your party pictures. You could be featured in our next party issue (October). February marks a special anniversary for me. It marks when I first became a parent. Eleven years ago, I went into labor on Super Bowl Sunday. I had watched the game and went to bed but woke up in full labor. We drove to the hospital and there were no doctors there only nurses. I guess they had taken the night off! I was a bit nervous and I could hear the nurses on the phone telling the doctor the baby is coming now and to hurry. Overall, the nurses took great care of me and the doctor arrived 5 minutes before my daughter was born. (LOL just in time to make his touchdown.) It was quite an experience and I will never forget the first time I held my daughter all 7 lbs. of her. It makes me sad that I can’t hold my little baby as she is getting ready to go middle school next year and will probably soon be taller than me. Save the date! Our 6th Annual Summer Camp Expo is back! Join us Sunday April 26th from 10 AM - 1 PM at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. There will be a lot of family fun! Kids are FREE! Thanks again to the generosity of our community sponsor Brian D. Guralnick Injury Lawyers, the first 200 Adults are FREE! Don’t miss this great event and a way to meet 30+ camps under one roof! Happy Parenting,

Easy as 1...2...3 Party Planning Tips
Check out these easy party planning tips to help make planning your child’s birthday party easy and stress free as 1, 2, 3!
1. Start with an invite list. It dictates everything: How large a venue, what kind of theme or activities you pick, etc. 2. What about siblings? Before age 7, inviting siblings is a nice gesture if you have the space and funds. However, other parents understand your predicament firsthand. If it’s not feasible, don’t be afraid to say no. If childcare is an issue for the sibling perhaps offer to have them drop the birthday guest off. 3. If your child’s friend list is a mile long consider making it Just Family Don’t be afraid to make your child’s party just family plus a few friends.
8 February 2020| PB Parenting |
4. Skip the paper invite. Everyone is online these days (even grandmas have email and facebook!) Utilize any of the many free services out there or create a private facebook event! 5. Get creative. Regardless of your theme, there are lots of places to go for inspiration including Pinterest. By the time your child is 3 or so, they’ll have lots of input on what they want too maybe too much input! 6. Skip the Goodie Bags! There! We said it! We love the generous spirit behind goodie bags and party favors, but we could all do without random tchotchkes that get played with for five seconds (if that) and then stuffed in a drawer. How about hosting a simple craft activity and letting the result serve as the parting gift? Or taking a group photo and printing out copies (at the party or after) for each child to keep?
7. Food- Offer a variety of foods. Ordering a few pizzas takes care of the main course, but think about including fruit, nuts, cheese, crackers, or popcorn for snacking. 8. Visit the venue- Plan a visit to your venue if you are throwing it outside your home before the party so you can scope it out and anticipate any issues. 9. Instead of lugging a trunk full of gifts suggest NO GIFTS - If you are overflowing with toys, try something new, host a book exchange. On the invite, ask that everyone bring a book in lieu of a gift, which they will then exchange for a new one. 10. Keep it short! You need one or two activities that will take you to cake time! Party experts recommend 90 minutes for children under 5. Two hours for ages over 5.

11. Set an End Time. Always err on the side of a shorter party, and note a specific end time on the invitation. As kids get older, most parents will expect to drop off their kids and pick them up at the end of the party. If you’d like some grown up assistants, be sure to arrange for them ahead of time. 12. Take a lot of Photos. When the party is done all you have left is pictures. Make sure to designate someone to. 13. Write thank-you notes. While sending email invitations is standard these days, most guests still appreciate a good oldfashioned physical thank-you card—particularly one written by the birthday child. It can even be a picture if your child can’t write yet. Can’t stand the thought of more
SHELTER PET & LIFE OF THE PARTY Amazing stories start in shelters and rescues. Adopt today to start yours. HAMILTON 75k+ Instagram Followers
wasted paper inevitably ending up in the trash? Send a personalized thank-you email and include pictures of the party. 14. Consider Throwing Parties Every Few Years - Everyone should feel special on her birthday, but there’s no rule that says your kid has to have an elaborate party every year. 15. Team Up with a Friend. Does your child have a good buddy with a birthday in close proximity? Team up to reduce effort (and scheduling) for all! Planning a birthday party doesn’t have to make you want to pull your hair out! It also helps to connect with the right vendors to make sure your party goes off without a hitch! Check out Page 12 for PB Parenting’s bi-annual party planning guide which is also online all year long at pbparenting.com.

Sweet Snacks for Loved Ones Valentine’s Day Eats and Treats Valentine’s Day naturally brings thoughts of hearts, flowers, sweetness and love. Because it also occurs during American Heart Month, it’s a perfect opportunity to start taking care of your own heart and the hearts of loved ones. Part of the charm of the day’s celebrations is in giving family and friends flavorful foods to enjoy from chocolates and candies to other sugary treats. However, the festivities don’t have to be completely focused on unhealthy bites in order to make someone feel special. This year, it can be easy to share in the fun of Valentine’s Day by serving those you love with sweet, seasonal treats. For example, these Frosted Watermelon Cutouts make for ideal snacks for children and adults alike whether it’s an after-school treat or a sweet dessert with just three ingredients, heart-shaped cookie cutters and minimal time spent in the kitchen.
18 February 2020| PB Parenting |
If you’re really looking to impress that special someone, this Watermelon and Chocolate Dessert Board calls for creativity and plenty of tasty morsels like berries, cashews, almonds and dark chocolate. Without any baking or cooking required, simply spread out the ingredients for a platter that’s just as visually appealing as it is appetizing. Both recipes include the benefits of watermelon, which boasts plenty of vitamin C to boost the immune system’s
defenses as a cholesterol-free, fat-free and sodium-free food. Plus, watermelon draws its red color from the powerful antioxidant lycopene (12.7 mg per serving), which may help protect cells from damage, and the healthy treat is American Heart Association Heart-Check Certified with just 80 calories per serving, making it the perfect centerpiece for Valentine’s Day recipes.

and even hear them fire off the cannons! The National Park Service takes care of this historic property and admission is very reasonable only $15 and allows you admission for the next 7 days. Children under 15 are free with an adult. Speaking of getting around, there are a few trolley companies in town that offer hop on and hop off services during the day. This makes getting around St. Augustine a breeze with 15 to 20 stops that pick up every 20 minutes or so . Their knowledgable tour guides are also sharing great stories and historical information along the route. With our trolley passes in hand, we hopped on the trolly, headed across town and hopped off at the Lightner Museum. This museum is actually housed in Henry Flagler’s former Alcazar Hotel that he built in 1889. This hotel contained the world’s largest indoor swimming pool, the first in the entire state of Florida. The Alcazar remained open to guests until 1931 and now hosts some shops, cafes and the museum. The museum houses an interesting and eclectic collection of art, furniture and artifacts from the time it was a hotel. It is located directly across from Flagler’s other hotel turned college (Flagler College). The Ponce de Leon hotel was built in 1887 and is listed as a National Historic landmark. Flagler’s Legacy Tours offers guided tours of this architectural masterpiece throughout the year including seeing their beautiful priceless collection of Tiffany Glass windows.
