Letter From The Publisher Greetings, I am trying not to freak out as I write this letter but in less than a week I will officially be a mom to a teenager. YIKES! Right? My oldest child turns 13 this month. I am thankful we have made it this far and personally a little scared of the road that lays ahead. It frightens me that in just 5 short years, they will be officially an adult! I often reminisce of an easier time for birthdays when the kids were little and you would pick your favorite play place, invite their classmates, grab a face painter or character for entertainment. Those were some of my favorite parties. Birthday Celebrations are still fun but a little different now that they are older. To help you throw the BEST BIRTHDAY Party ever we have put together our 11th annual Party Planning Guide! Party planning doesn't have to be difficult and we have put the best spots in the area together. Check it out starting on page 16. February is also a great time to remind your partner and your kids that you care about them! Valentine's Day is this month and we have some great ideas to include the kids in the celebration starting on page 8. Finally, check out page 14 for a special announcement about our new edition coming to the Treasure Coast! PB Parenting is expanding our reach to the Treasure Coast area. Read all about it and meet our new Treasure Coast editor, Marianne! Happy Parenting,

5. Celebrate With Some Pampering. Have a fun at-home spa day! Put on some fun masks. Recently at Target, I saw a fun unicorn themed mask that even sparkles! Have fun with mini manis and pedis. You can even draw hearts on your nails with nail art pens! 6. Have A Photo Shoot Create your own shoot with fun props such as chalkboard, balloons, tutus, and candy or get in front of the camera and have an expert take your photos (Lynn at Lynn Studios is great www.lynnstudios1.com.) 4. Read Them Valentine’s Day Theme Books Reading books to your child is an excellent way to bond. Read some of your favorites or pick up a few new ones. Some of our favorites are “Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day is Cool,” Llama Llama I Love You,” “Guess How Much I love You,” and “Sesame Street: My Fuzzy Valentine”.

7. Be Kind to Others Valentine’s Day happens to fall on the start of Random Acts of Kindness Week (Feb. 14-20). Do you know a friend or perhaps an elderly neighbor that might not have a Valentine this year. Make their day by dropping off a homemade card, some candy or flowers.

You could also arrange to give treats to first responders. Call up your local station or hospital and see if you can drop off some cookies or individual cakes like Nothing Bundt Cakes to nurses, EMTs, firefighters, or police officers to show your appreciation. For more ideas go to www.randomactsofkindness.org. 8. Make Gift Certificates For Each Other. Decorate and come up with some good “gifts” for each other. This mom would really love a “I will do a chore for you card” or maybe “I will

clean my room card”. Other ideas include: “Play your favorite board game,” “Make Pancakes together,” or “Pick Dinner tonight”. You can come up with many ideas. 9. Get “Heart Healthy” Together February is American Heart Month. So use Valentine’s Day as a way to exercise together as a family. Plan a family walk, hike, or bike ride. Is the weather not so great? Stay indoors but crank up the music and have a heart-pumping dance party!

10. Have a Special Valentine’s Family Dinner Finish the day with a special meal together. No ordering pizza, Valentine’s day deserves something more fancy! If you are staying in have the kids help make beautiful place settings or decorate the table. You could make dinner (pasta is always a big hit with my kids) or order takeout from your favorite restaurant. If you are feeling very adventurous, everyone could dress up and go out together! If you have plans with your partner on Valentines these things can be done leading up to Valentine's Day.

PB Parenting Magazine will begin a Treasure Coast Edition to help local parents and grandparents residing in Martin, St. Lucie, & Indian River Counties PB Parenting is excited to announce the Treasure Coast Edition! We are excited to announce our expansion into the Treasure Coast area. The Treasure Coast is not new territory for us. For eight years, our founder and publisher, Felonice Merriman, lived in the Stuart and Port St. Lucie area with her then newborn daughter. (She was born in Stuart!) While living in the Treasure Coast area, she worked at the local newspaper and was the creative director of Treasure Coast Parenting.

In 2010 she moved to Palm Beach County and started PB

Parenting soon after, but the Treasure Coast has always called back to her. Of course, a lot has changed since she moved. So Felonice enlisted the help of local mom and educator Marianna Frances to be PB Parenting's Treasure Coast Editor. Marianna has lived on the Treasure Coast for the past 12 years and is a native Floridian. She has two sons that are nine and six years old. Marianna loves to connect with other parents around the area and find those cool and fun things to do with her children. She isn't afraid to travel, and you can usually find her visiting a Disney Park. Marianna has worked in education for over 14 years, so she loves finding and sharing learning opportunities within the community. We know she will be a valuable resource for what is happening on the Treasure Coast. You can drop her a line and say hi at marianna@pbparenting.com.

could all do without random tchotchkes that get played with for five seconds (if that) and then stuffed in a drawer. How about hosting a simple craft activity and letting the result serve as the parting gift? Or taking a group photo and printing out copies (at the party or after) for each child to keep?

it out and anticipate any issues. Instead of lugging a trunk full of gifts suggest NO GIFTS - If you are overflowing with toys, try something new, host a book exchange. On the invite, ask that everyone bring a book in lieu of a gift, which they will then exchange for a new one.

Food- Offer a variety of foods. Ordering a few pizzas takes care of the main course, but think about including fruit, nuts, cheese, crackers, or popcorn for snacking. Serve food in single serving containers (not group bowls) to keep germs at bay.

Keep it short! You need one or two activities that will take you to cake time! Party experts recommend 90 minutes for children under 5. Two hours for ages over 5. Set an End Time. Always err on the side of a shorter party, and note a specific end time on the invitation. As kids get older, most parents will expect Visit the venue- Plan a visit to your venue if you are throwing it outside your to drop off their kids and pick them up home before the party so you can scope at the end of the party.
