Tips for Choosing the Right Camp for Your Child

Summer is right around the corner. School will be out but you may still be working or just simply need a break from them during the long weeks of summer. According to a recent online survey conducted by Bankrate. com, Parents say they expect to spend an average of $998 per child on summer child care expenses. Of these parents, one in five parents say they plan on spending over $2,000 per child for summertime child-care services, that includes summer camps, classes or baby-sitters. With the possibility of spending thousands of dollars this summer, you want to make sure you are sending your child to the right camp for your family’s budget. Here are some tips from PB Parenting for finding the right camp that fits your child and budget.

camps to specialty interest including culinary, robotics, web design, animation, photography and videography. Remember this is about what they like not you. Figure out what makes your children tick, and look for the type of camp that fits their interests and personalities.

Try Camps With Many Activities Maybe your child is still learning what interest them. They also may have hit the indecisive tween/teen stage and when you ask they shrug their shoulders and say I don’t know. Check out a camp that offers a variety of activities, as opposed to a singleactivity camp. Choose a camp that offer programming that exposes the children to a wide range of activities so that they can find their interests and foster them. Another idea What are your child’s Interests? Think is to rotate each week and try new interest. about what your children enjoy and get One week check out culinary camp, the really excited about during the school year? next week head to dance camp, then a tech Some love sports and being outdoors while camp the following week. Variety during some children geek out about minecraft and the summer can also prevent boredom and building robots. There is a camp out there makes each week an adventure. for every interest out there. Camps themes Day Camp or Overnight Camp? range from traditional sports and outdoor Is your child older and ready for the 8 March 2020| PB Parenting |

experience of overnight camp? Is an overnight camp experience in your summer care budget? Overall, overnight camp will cost more but it requires less driving and coordination whether that’s a week or a month, etc. Such experiences give children a taste of independence and nurture self confidence and personal growth in a supervised setting, and are a great option for a child who are comfortable being away from home for longer periods of time. It can be a memorable experience if both your child (and you) are ready. Budget Friendly Camps Most camps offer a multi-week discount, sibling discount or discounts for member. Sometimes if you register early they will have a early bird discount or waive the registration fee. Contact the camp directly and early and see how you can save. If your family budget doesn’t have a lot of room for camp costs check out camps that are run by community organization and nonprofits

often their weekly rate is less. Do Your Research Check out PB Parenting’s 9th annual Summer Camp Directory for a comprehensive directory of camps that are in the Palm Beach County area. Even better meet the camp representatives in person on Sunday, April 26th at PB Parenting’s 6th annual Summer Camp Expo at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. It is a great opportunity to gather information and ask questions all while the kids have a fun time! Activities for the kids including face painting, arts and crafts, photo booth, fun science experiments and more! Plus you can explore everything the Science Center has to offer such as the Discovery Center, playground, mini golf and outdoor Fisher Family Science trail. You could also win a free week of Camp! Pick up your “Passport to Summer” at the PB Parenting table and complete it for a chance to win a free week from any of the camps present at the event (up to a $250 value). Investing in our Children Think of camp as an investment. Children and teens gain so much by attending summer camp. Keep in mind that cost is typically reflective of all that goes into camp, and could be correlated with what your child will get out of it. Tech and speciality camps might be more expensive given the type of expertise, hardware and software required for a complete learning experience. And don’t forget to determine what’s included in the final price of camp, since most added benefits can bump up your total cost. Does the camp provide lunch? Offer early pick-up and drop-off? Make sure you’re paying for the things that are most important to you and your family. Finally, have fun with the process. Our childhood summers are precious moments that are meant to be fun and memorable.

Plan Ahead for Peak Summer Travel Seasons

A family getaway is the perfect chance to unwind and reconnect with loved ones away from the distractions of daily life. However, peak travel times like Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekend are some of the busiest times of the year, which can mean limited options.

If you’re considering one of these high travel periods for a family trip in 2020, get ahead of the curve with these tips for advance booking dates from the travel experts at Vrbo.

“The key is to book vacation homes before traffic peaks, so you’ll find the best selection for the amount you want to pay,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo family travel expert. “There are clear times when demand surges. Booking your stay before that surge ensures you’ll get that house with a pool right on the beach or that mountain cabin with enough beds for all the cousins.”

Memorial Day: Marking the beginning of summer, Memorial Day is an ideal time for a beach getaway. Two of the top destinations are on the shores of Alabama alongside Santa Rosa Beach in Florida’s Emerald Coast. Make travel plans by mid-April so you can soak up the sunshine and get away from it all to celebrate the long weekend.

Stay ahead of the curve by booking a vacation rental for peak travel times before these dates: Booking travel early not only gives you more Memorial Day weekend: Book by April 20 time to get excited leading up to your trip - it Summer: Book by April 30 gives you more time to plan, helping take Fourth of July weekend: Book by May 25 some of the stress out of family vacation. Labor Day weekend: Book by July 28

Summer: Summer is the ultimate time to take a family beach vacation, and for the best selection you’ll want to make reservations before the end of April, especially if you’re considering a vacation home. Staying in a vacation home can take the stress out of a family summer vacation, particularly as extra space means extra bedrooms for the adults to relax after the kids go to bed. Top destinations with many vacation homes to choose from include Panama City Beach, Florida; Gulf Shores, Alabama; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Fourth of July: Fourth of July falls on a Friday this year, which means families from coast to coast will be enjoying a long weekend together, whether it’s the immediate clan or extended relatives, too. Be sure to make travel arrangements by late May for the best selection and rates. The Florida east and west coasts are popular choices for a mid-summer getaway.

Labor Day: Often considered the final hurrah of summer, Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to kick back and relax. A vacation home at the lake or beach can allow you to take advantage of amenities like outdoor grills so you can enjoy one last sun-kissed meal with the family. Make plans by the end of July, especially if you’re considering a popular destination like Myrtle Beach. Find more travel tips and start planning your family getaway at vrbo.com. In 1995, Vrbo introduced a new way for people to travel together, pairing homeowners with families and friends looking for places to stay. Since then, we’ve grown into a global community of homeowners and travelers, with unique properties around the world. Vrbo makes it easy and fun to book cabins, condos, beach houses and every kind of space in between. Vrbo is part of Expedia Group . Photo courtesy of Getty Image Source: Vrbo and Family Features.

DAY CAMP CHECKLIST • Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45 • Insect repellant wipes and/or insect repellent wristband (do not send an aerosol can of insect repellant–the spray will sting if it gets in your child’s eyes.) • Bathing suit and towel • Water bottle filled with ice-cold water • Hat • Sunglasses • Comfortable running shoes or closed-toe sports sandals WITH socks • Extra set of clothes (especially a pair of socks and shirt if they get wet from the rain) • Rain poncho (rolls up small)

• Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful. • Food: Most day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack. Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have. Optional: • Change purse with $1-$2 for snacks • Benadryl cream for itchy mosquito bites

Spring break for Palm Beach County Public Schools is from March 23-27. There are many great camp options (check out page 46). However, you may opt to take some time off from work or maybe you are a stay at home parent and need some ideas on where to go with the little ones during the break. Explore your backyard People travel from all over the world to enjoy the sun, beach and beautiful weather South Florida has to offer! When was the last time you were at the beach? I know it is a big pain to haul all that gear and stuff but it really wears the kids out and is a lot of fun. If the thought of sand in your car is too messy, maybe check out a local splash pad or water park. If you are feeling really adventurous head to Central Florida area and check out the many springs they have up there such as Wekiwa or Blue Springs. Educational Field Trips Just because school is out doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. Day trips to some area attractions can help teach the kids a few things and have fun while away from the classroom. Some of PB Parenting’s top picks: South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, The Palm Beach Zoo, Schoolhouse Children’s Museum and Learning Center, Sandoway Discovery Center, Loggerhead Marinelife Center. Learn about animals, science and more all within a 30-40 minute drive of your house.

This fun trampoline park has a rock climbing wall, basketball, trapeze and dodgeball. 2 hours of jumping and my kids are worn out for the day! Each frog has a name and a story; it’s a fun and interactive experience for all ages. Open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM. Admission is FREE for Mounts members; $15 for nonmembers; $8 for students with ID; $5 for children 5 to 12. For more information or to purchase tickets online go to www.Mounts.org. Day at Home Are you always on the go? When was there a day you spent the whole day home? Make it fun, have a movie marathon with their favorite snack! Have the kids help prepare their favorite meal, take a bike ride around the neighborhood, or make some lemonade and relax in the yard while the kids play.
