Letter From The Publisher Greetings, March is here, and wow, what a ride the past 12 months have been. Last year at this time, we were entering into uncertainty. The talks of COVID-19 had begun, and shutting down for a couple of weeks to “flatten the curve” was on the horizon. I remember being bummed that our spring break and so many other activities were canceled. Fast forward, it is a year later. I hate the term “new normal,” but that is kind of where we are. A year later, life keeps moving. We don’t get to hit the pause button because we are in a pandemic - there is still work to do, bills to pay, school in session. Unfortunately, all of this is stressful, and keeping your sanity, and your family safe is a fine line. That is why I am looking forward to Spring Break as maybe a way to de-stress and take a mental break from all of this. I am looking forward to enjoying some time with my kids. You don’t need to travel far. There are so many safe things to do right here in our backyard! Check out page 8 for suggestions. Summer will be back soon. Last Summer certainly wasn’t fun. Many camps were canceled, were virtual or had small limited sizes. This year will be different. Many camps will be back in session, with precautions in play of course. Camps will be limited on how many campers they can accommodate, so I highly recommend booking early to make sure you have your spot. This year has been tough, but we have made it through, and I truly believe sunny days are ahead. Thank you to our readers and advertisers that have pivoted with us as we have transitioned to a 100 percent “Covid-friendly” digital format. Happy Parenting, 4 March 2021| PB Parenting |

Tips for Choosing the Right
Summer Camp will look a bit different this year. Last year, many summer camps were canceled and some ran at limited capacity due to COVID-19. However, a year later, schools and camps are now open and operating with restrictions, social distancing, and other virus-control measures. After a summer spent at home last year, you might be looking at sending your child to camp. Your child might be looking forward to interacting and socializing with their peers in a fun summer setting. Please keep in mind every family has different needs and health factors/risks to consider keep those in mind as you decide whether or not to send your child to camp. Here are some tips to help find the right camp for your child. COVID-19 Measures First and foremost, inquiry about the camp’s COVID-19 procedures What are their cleaning and disinfecting standards? How is physical distancing implemented through out the day? 16 March 2021| PB Parenting |
What are the group sizes? Is it the same group and staff each day? Drop off and pick up? Is Drop off and pick up curbside? Is it staggered? What is the camp’s mask policy? When are mask worn and not worn? Hand-washing? Is it “encouraged”? Are handwashing or hand-santizer stations available? What are the camp’s notification procedures if your child has been exposed to COVID-19 by another child or staff? These are all important questions to ask to make sure your child has a safe summer. Due to COVID-19, many camps will have limited number of spots and will fill up fast. PB Parenting highly recommends signing up for camp early this year.
The CDC is suggesting the following guiding principles for the lowest risk while attending Summer Camps: • Small groups of campers that stay together all day, each day. • Campers remain at 6 feet apart and do not share objects. • Outdoor activities prioritized. What are Your Child’s Interests? Think about what your children enjoy and get really excited about during the school year. Some love sports and being outdoors while some children geek out about minecraft and building robots. There is a camp out there for every interest out there. Camp themes range from traditional sports and outdoor camps to specialty interest including culinary, robotics, web design, animation, photography and videography. Remember this is about what they like not you. Figure out what makes

that offers a variety of activities, as opposed to a single-activity camp. Choose a camp that offers programming that exposes the children to a wide range of activities so that they can find their interests and foster them. Another idea is to rotate each week and try new interests. One week check out culinary camp, the next week head to dance camp, then a tech camp the following week. Variety during the summer can also prevent boredom and makes each week an adventure.

Budget Friendly Camps Most camps offer a multi-week discount, sibling discount or discounts for members. Sometimes if you register they will have a early bird discount or waive the registration fee. Contact the camp directly and early and see how you can save. what’s included in the final price of camp, since most added benefits can bump up your total cost. Does the camp provide lunch? Offer early pick-up and drop-off? Make sure you’re paying for the things that are most important to you and your family. Do Your Research Check out PB Parenting’s 10th annual Summer Camp Directory for a comprehensive directory of camps that are in the Palm Beach County area. Investing in our Children Think of camp as an investment in their mental health. Children and teens gain so much by attending summer camp. Due to the pandemic, many of our children’s mental health has suffered. Give children a boost by trying to make summer as normal as possible. Finally, have fun with the process. Our childhood summers are precious moments that are meant to be fun and memorable.

DAY CAMP CHECKLIST Revised for 2021 COVID-19 • Mask (with it being hot for summer pack a couple so your child can swap them out if they get wet or sweat) • Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes • Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45 • Insect repellant wipes and/or insect repellent wristband (do not send an aerosol can of insect repellant–the spray will sting if it gets in your child’s eyes.) • Bathing suit and towel • Water bottle filled with ice-cold water • Hat and Sunglasses • Comfortable running shoes or closed-toe sports sandals WITH socks
• Extra set of clothes (especially a pair of socks and shirt if they get wet from the rain) • Rain poncho (rolls up small) • Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful. • Food: Some day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack. Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have.

Lucky Mint Brownie Perfection (Culinary.net) How lucky you must be to come across this recipe just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. This one is a twisted combination of mint and sweet chocolate that’s sure to have almost anyone’s taste buds screaming “yum.” This dessert might just be the pot of gold at the end of your rainbow this year. These Mint Brownies have three delicious layers. First, a supreme brownie on bottom. Then a fluffy, green mint layer that’s full of flavor and color. Last, but definitely not least, a chocolate layer on top made with chocolate chips, butter and a little whipping cream. All of these layers create a smooth, sweet, minty, bite-sized dessert perfect for any occasion but especially St. Patrick’s Day. The green mint color really pops off the plate, giving it some extra flare and an appetizing glow. 28 March 2021| PB Parenting |
To start, create the soft, chocolate filled brownie. Combine brownie mix, vegetable oil, one egg, water and the chocolate syrup pouch. Bake and cool completely. Then it’s time for some colorful, festive fun. Make the filling with powdered sugar, butter, whipping cream, softened cream cheese, a splash of peppermint extract and a few drops of green food coloring. Beat and pour over the cooled brownie pan. The last layer is simple. In a saucepan, melt whipping cream, chocolate chips and butter until smooth. When it’s cooled to lukewarm, pour it over the filling for the final layer. Refrigerate the Mint Brownies for two hours before serving. Cut them into bite-size pieces for small chunks that will melt in your mouth. Find more seasonal dessert recipes at Culinary.net. Check out a fun step by step recipe video on www.pbparenting.com.

Wake Up Refreshed • Simple ways to begin your morning •
Ready, set, go. Just as you would set off at the starting line of a race, this hectic pace is how mornings begin for many men and women. Instead of waking with dread to face another hectic morning, consider these tips for a healthier way to ease into your daily rituals. While these activities may require you to allow extra time, you may be pleased with the productive results. Meditate. A practice that has been around for thousands of years may still be one of the best stress busters for hurried 30 March 2021| PB Parenting |
mornings. To start, find a place in your home that is free of noise and distraction. Practice sitting still, with eyes closed, and focus only on your breathing. Using deep, controlled breaths, try to steer your thoughts away from negative and stressinducing thoughts. Stretch. While the most health-conscious person may opt for a morning sweat-athon, working in some stretches can also be beneficial. When you awake, think about oft-used muscles and extend each one for 15-30 seconds.
Activate. Give your brain some fuel in the morning while also doing something nice for your mind. For example, journaling is a gentle way to ease into your morning and get your brain firing. If you can’t think of a topic, simply write down a few affirmations for the day, revisit a pleasant memory from your past or scribble down a goal for the week. Journaling can be an uplifting way to engage the mind and express gratitude for the day ahead.
