Preparing Your Child for a New Sibling Preparing Kids The arrival of a new baby can bring many changes to a family. Parents spend a lot of energy on preparations, and after the baby arrives, much of the family’s attention involves caring for the newborn. All this change can be hard for older siblings to handle. It’s common for them to feel jealousy toward the newborn and to react to the upheaval by acting out. But parents can prepare kids for an addition to the family. Discussing the pregnancy in terms that make sense to kids, making some arrangements, and including kids in the care of the newborn can make things easier for everyone. During Pregnancy To tell a child about an impending sibling, consider your own comfort level and your child’s maturity level. Preschoolers, for example, may not grasp concepts of time, so it might not mean much if you say that the baby will arrive in a few months. It may be more useful to explain that the baby will arrive in a particular season, such as winter or when it’s cold outside. How much detail should you provide? Let your child’s questions be your guide. For example, a 4-year-old child may ask: “Where do babies come from?” Despite how it sounds, the child isn’t asking you to explain sex but probably wants to know where, literally, they come from. It may be

enough to explain: “The baby comes from the uterus, which is inside the mother’s belly.” A child who wants to know more will ask. If your child shows more interest in the baby, you can encourage that by: • • • • • •

going through your child’s baby pictures reading books about childbirth (make sure they’re age-appropriate) visiting friends who have infants packing a bag for the hospital thinking of potential baby names going to the doctor to hear the baby’s heartbeat

Also look into sibling birth classes, which many hospitals offer to provide orientation for soon-to-be brothers and sisters. These classes can include lessons on how to hold a baby, explanations of how a baby is born, and opportunities for kids to discuss their feelings about having a new brother or sister. Planning for Childbirth As your due date draws near, make arrangements for older kids for the time when you’re in the hospital. Discuss these plans so kids know what to expect when the day arrives. Consider letting your child visit you in the hospital as soon as possible after the baby is born, ideally when no other visitors are

around — this helps reinforce the birth as an intimate family event. Try to keep routines as regular as possible in the days and weeks around the baby’s arrival. If you plan to make any room shifts to accommodate the baby, do it a few weeks before your due date. If your child is approaching a major milestone, like potty training or moving from a crib to a bed, try to make those changes well before your due date or put them off until after the baby has been home for a while. Bringing the New Baby Home Once the baby is home, you can help your other kids adjust to the changes. Include them as much as possible in the daily activities involving the baby so that they don’t feel left out.

Many kids want to help take care of a new baby. Though that “help” may mean that each task takes longer, it can give an older child a chance to interact with the baby in a positive way. Depending on their age, a big brother or sister may want to entertain the baby during a diaper change, help push the carriage, talk to the baby, or help dress, bathe, or burp the baby. If your child expresses no interest in the baby, don’t be alarmed and don’t force it. It can take time. Some occasions, like breastfeeding, excludes older kids. For these times, try to have toys on hand so that you can feed the baby without being interrupted or worrying about an older child feeling left out. Take advantage of chances for one-on-one time with older kids. Spend time together while the baby is sleeping and, if possible, set aside time each day for older kids to get one parent’s undivided attention. Knowing that there’s special time just for them may help ease any resentment or anger about the new baby.

Just ask the most discerning storks. They’ll tell you that at Toppel Family Place women find a program whose staff is dedicated to ensuring the childbirth experience is as joyful and stress-free as possible. As you are preparing for your new baby, remember to schedule a hospital tour!

Also remind relatives and friends that your older child might want to talk about something other than the new baby. If relatives or friends ask how they can help, suggest a fun activity or something special for the older child.

Continue to send your older child to childcare or to school, if you’re able. It’s normal to feel guilty about sending your older child away since now you’re home with the new baby (and if you’re home, you might feel that everyone should be). But keeping normal routines is helpful for siblings. And this time can give you precious one-on-one time with the baby that you might not otherwise have. When your older child comes home from childcare or school, plan for some quality family time.

Dealing With Feelings With all of the changes that a new baby can bring, some older kids might struggle as they try to adjust. Encourage older kids to talk about their feelings about the new baby. If a child cannot express those feelings, don’t be surprised if he or she tests limits or reverts to speaking in baby talk.

especially if she is in the hospital. A care package with movies, magazines, and treats is also nice when stuck in bed. Help with the older kids Mom may feel like she is letting down her older kids because she can not be her usual self. Show support by offering to pick up the kids, even if it’s just for a couple hours. Driving the kids to school How to Survive Hospital Bed Rest Hospital bed rest is a totally different experience than resting at home. The four walls of the hospital room can feel like a prison after looking at them for days or weeks on end. Here are some ways to survive hospital bed rest. Sleep - Often it’s hard to get a good night’s sleep in the hospital. Taking naps throughout the day is healthy for mom and baby and passes the time. Accept visitors - If someone offers to visit, accept their offer. It’s always nice to have someone new to talk to. Comforts - Bring as many comforts from home as you can. Having a favorite pillow or photos of loved ones can do a lot to encourage you. Go for a ride - Ask if you are allowed to go for a ride in a wheelchair. A change of scenery, even for a few minutes, can make a big difference. Throw a party - Ask friends or family to bring dinner to you. Watch a movie together or just chat. Make it a weekly event so you have something to look forward to. One day at a time - It’s easy to get overwhelmed when the days are long and boring. Try to take one day at a time and remain positive. Each day that passes is allowing baby to grow bigger and stronger.

or activities is also a big help. Keeping the kids in their regularly scheduled activities helps lessen the anxiety they feel with the changes at home. Stop by the store Offer to pick up a few things the family needs if you will be out running errands. Many grocery stores now offer drive through pick up. Have the family order and pay for groceries online, then pick them up and deliver them. Offering to help put them away is appreciated. If mom is allowed ride in a wheelchair during her outings, offer to drive her to the store and assist as she tries to get her shopping done. Provide a meal Providing meals for the family during a high risk pregnancy is a huge help. The family, including mom, need to eat three meals a day. Bring easy to heat up casseroles and freezer meals or stock the pantry with quick fix meals and snacks. Also consider simple to prepare food for lunch and breakfast. Try setting up a meal train for other friends and family to bring meals as well. Help around the house When faced with the questions of “How can I help?”, it is often difficult for mom to come up with an exact answer. Things you can consider just doing include sweeping the floor, folding loads of laundry, vacuuming, or doing dishes. Even a little bit of tidying up can make a big difference. Consider hiring a cleaning service for the family until mom is back on her feet. Checkups A high risk pregnancy usually warrants extra check ups. “I looked forward to the weekly scans.” says Loretta Jones, mom of triplets. “I only made it to 27 weeks, which was incredibly scary, but I felt better because I had just been at the doctor two days before.” Having weekly

checkups and ultrasounds are common for high risk pregnancies and it can really put a mom’s mind at ease when you are given a thumbs up for the day. During high risk pregnancy, mom often feels overwhelmed with the things she is missing due to bed rest including time with her spouse and other children, her work, and normal daily responsibilities. Combined with the worrying about her and the baby’s health, it is an extremely stressful time. By assisting with the basic needs of the family like cooking, cleaning, errands, and being a sounding board for her concerns and fears, you will relieve some of the stress so mom can focus on the health of herself and her child. Sarah Lyons spent five weeks on bed rest during her high risk triplet pregnancy. She feels that even though it was a difficult time, it was worth it to let the babies continue to grow before their birth six weeks premature.

8 Tips For First-Time Sleepaway Campers – And Their Parents BY TANNI HAAS, PH.D. There are few things more exciting in a kid’s life than their first sleepaway camp. How do you prepare a kid – and yourself – for this big event? Drawing on my own experiences as the parent of a 15-year-old boy who’s a happy camper, as well as conversations with other parents, I’ve identified 8 things you should do. Prepare For Camp Together You want your kids to take ownership of this exciting experience. To do that, prepare for camp together: shop together for all the stuff on the packing list and pack jointly using luggage that isn’t too difficult to carry. You should also build excitement by talking to your kids about all the incredible things they’re going to experience, and explain the rules and expectations of the camp. Pack Clothing For All Kinds Of Weather When you pack your kids’ clothes, don’t pack their best items. Whether it’s a sports camp or any other type of camp, there are likely to be outdoor activities where clothing will get stained, torn, or ruined. Pack their most durable clothes, and make sure that there are clothes for all kinds of weather – both sunny, warm days and rainy, cool days. Most importantly, label everything with your kids’ names. A good friend of ours forgot to do that for their daughter’s first sleepaway

camp. She came home with all kinds of wild clothes they’d never seen before. Have a Sleepover – Or Two Your kids are going to be away from you, possibly for the first time, for an extended period of time. Some kids have absolutely no problem adjusting; others might need to dip their feet in the water slowly, so to speak. Organize a couple of sleepovers with their friends – and do it at their friends’ houses – to get them used to being away from you. Speak to Parents In Your Neighborhood No matter how confident your kids are that they’re going to be just fine without you, it’s always a good idea to bring them some comfort from home to camp. Reach out to other parents from your kids’ school or your neighborhood to see if they plan on sending their kids to the same camp. Most camps let parents request that their kids bunk with one or more of their regular friends. They’re going to meet lots of other kids and make lots of new friends as well. Contribute Money To The Candy Store Most sleepaway camps have a store where kids can buy candy with money that parents have contributed to an account. Ask the camp director what amount parents typically contribute to this account – and then contribute the same amount. Kids

compare themselves to other kids, and no kid wants to be the odd one out with less money to buy candy than everyone else. Conversely, you don’t want to overcontribute to the candy account. Communication and Care Packages Find out what the camp’s policy is when it comes to communicating with your kids via email, letters and care packages. Are you allowed a certain number of emails or letters? How many care packages are you permitted to send, and are their rules about what you can and can’t send? If you’re allowed to include toys in the care packages, choose things that your kids can enjoy together with the other campers, like Frisbees and playing cards, instead of toys that only they can enjoy themselves. For our son’s first sleepaway camp, my spouse and I sent several decks of playing cards with the first care package. The kids ended up playing cards with the camp counselors until late at night.

Don’t Hang Around Too Long When You Arrive When you finally arrive at camp for the drop-off, do yourself – and your kids – the favor and leave once they’re settled in. Bring them to their cabin, help them unpack if necessary, and then extract yourself as quickly as possible. Your kids are eager to meet all the other kids, and there’s nothing as embarrassing as a parent who lingers for what appears to be no good reason. Let them start bonding to and connecting with their counselors and the other kids. Don’t Worry - They’re Going To Be Fine Once you’re back in the car, take a deep breath, and then head home. Your kids are going to be fine and so will you. Trust me. 5 Tips to Help Reduce Litter and Protect the Oceans The tide of environmental studies showing the harmful effects of litter and mismanaged waste on oceans are seemingly everywhere. pre-packed fruit and vegetables, pick up litter and avoid buying water in plastic bottles. “Mismanaged packaging waste is a threat to our oceans and the overall health of our planet,” said Lynn Bragg, president of the Glass Packaging Institute. “We can all make a difference by changing the type of food and beverage packaging we buy, opting for reusable and refillable containers, following local recycling guidelines and helping keep beaches and waterways clean.” These tips from the Glass Packaging Institute are just a few ways to contribute: 1. Think about the packaging you choose. When making a purchase, consider alternatives to plastic like glass or other
