Letter From The Publisher Greetings, I have been looking forward to the 100th issue of PB Parenting for quite a while over the past 8 years. Every month my team and I put together PB Parenting and send it to the printing presses. Even after I gave birth to my son, 3 days later we went to print! We normally deliver to over 1000 locations in Palm Beach County, however the majority of them are closed right now and the few that have remained open would put our distribution team at risk of getting sick. So my team and I made the hard decision that the 100th issue will have to be online only due to COVID-19 so that all of our readers can read it safely from the comfort of their own homes. You will find we also made some major editorial changes to reflect the current times we are in and bring you pertaintent content you can use that relates to all of our situations right now. It has been a strange couple of weeks. School is cancelled until at least April 15th (at this time), who knows it may be longer. We are trying to settle into the new balance of trying to work from home, cook meals and keep an eye on the kids. I wanted to bring you some ideas for ways that I have been trying to keep my two kids busy (lots of cooking, arts and crafts and outside play). One of the first things I did was also set up a “school station” with their computers. This is a designated area of the home with no distractions so they can focus on their upcoming at home school lessons. My kids have loved virtual learning in the afternoon and we tuned into live sea turtle talks from Loggerhead Marinelife Center and Science Demos from the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. Check both of them out on their facebook pages as well as some other places to go for virtual learning on page 13. Hang in there! We are all in this together, stay safe and healthy!

Top 10 Activities to Keep the Kids from Driving You Insane While Staying Home

With the recent and rapid spread of the Coronavirus around the U.S, staying home is proving to be a very stressful time for parents as they try to juggle working at home and keeping their children occupied and up to date with their schoolwork. It won’t be long for those kiddos start getting stir crazy, but never fear - Dan Pegram, children’s author of Pop-Pop Airplane, How Do You Fly?, has developed a great list of activities that will bring the whole family together and keep everyone sane at the same time. Here are Dan’s top 10 ways to keep the kids from driving you insane during these times:

2. Engage Without Electronics: Limit their time in front of the television, video games, computers and iPad type devices. This may prove difficult at first but if you’re creative this could turn into a blessing in disguise. Assign them simple chores to do so they can earn time on these devices. We have all become increasing addicted to our cell phones and computers. Spending more time engaged with your children during this uncertain period is comforting and lets them know how much you care.

3. Go Outside: Plan activities outside and show your children how we used to entertain 1. Schoolwork: Continue your children’s ourselves before the Internet and social assigned schoolwork. Most schools are media. Go for hikes in your neighborhood providing guidance and lessons via the or on local trails and look for birds and other Internet. Just like the classroom environment, wildlife. Look up bird species in your area and make this time structured and devoted to then see how many you can spot. This could accomplishing their daily assignments. Also, turn into a lifelong hobby. It did for me. create a workspace for the school age kids 4. Arts and Crafts: Arts and crafts are perfect equipped with a chair, lamp, pencil holder, for promoting creativity and learning new crayons, etc.

skills. My granddaughters and I try to build something out of balsa wood every time we visit. I do the cutting and they do the building. There are numerous sites online for arts and crafts projects. YouTube art classes are great and age appropriate. Pick a few and get started. It’s a great way to spend time together and be creative. Our grandson and his friends are coloring pictures for each other and putting them in each other’s mailboxes to keep busy and stay in touch with their nearby friends. I recently built three birdhouses and mailed two to our granddaughters. I kept one and we’re decorating them as a project and plan to share our finished products. Putting puzzles together is also a great way to pass the time. 5. Cook Something Together: There’s no better way to teach your kids a valuable skill than by cooking. Dust off your cookbooks, pick a couple of simple recipes and let the magic begin. Your children will learn about ingredients and through measuring will learn a little about fractions. Plan your meals together and let them do some of the simple things like measuring the ingredients, greasing a pan or setting the table. Spending time together at the dinner table talking about the days events, discussing this quarantine situation at their level and planning for tomorrow can’t be over-emphasized. This may be new to some but you will find this time very enriching. 6. Read Books: Reading is a skill that opens the world to youngsters. It’s also a perishable skill that needs continuous practice. During this time away from school would be a great time to introduce your children to some of your old favorite books and discovering some new titles. My new book entitled Pop-Pop Airplane, How Do You Fly? teaches children, ages 3 -7, how airplanes fly and is a great book for stimulating inquisitive young minds. For the more advanced readers, chapter books like Elephant & Piggie by Mo Willems are quite popular. There are also a

couple of apps used by schools called EPIC! and Raz-Kids that offer unlimited access to 35,000 of the best children’s books and learning videos so your child can read and learn anytime. 7. Write: As an author I’ve been asked many times, “How do you start writing a book?” My answer is simple – “It’s just like having a conversation with someone and you’re telling them a story or relating some event in your life.” If your children aren’t familiar with journaling, this might be a great time to introduce them to this wonderful writing exercise. Journals don’t have to be formal. Any small notebook is a great place to start. Google search “journaling” for some useful ideas and benefits. Another wonderful app is Teachers Pay Teachers. This app contains printables and worksheets to help youngsters with simple writing projects.

to do is drag out the old photo albums and have us tell about each photo. Children are very interested in what life was like back when we were children. They also enjoy learning about grandparents, aunts and uncles and places we have visited. It is so much fun laughing at the old photos, the retro clothing and hairstyles and reliving fun times in our lives. 9. Make Some Noise: If you play a musical instrument or sing, this would be a great time to explore your children’s interest in music. I dabble at playing the guitar and love to sing. The jury is still out on the quality of the noise coming from my office from time to time! Impromptu singing with a wooden spoon or microphone to Lights by Journey with my audio amplifier entertains our granddaughters for hours. YouTube has an endless assortment of lessons for any instrument including vocals. Again, casting inhibition aside, jump in and have some family fun. 10. Stay Calm: This is an unprecedented time for all of us. Remain calm, stay informed and educate your children as to why we are practicing social distancing and staying at home. Emphasize to them how important good hygiene habits are and why most everything we used to do has been curtailed (including play dates). Ensure your children these life-changing times will be over soon and things will go back to near normal. With the exception of being quarantined, try to make each day routine and spend as much quality time together as possible. I hope the above tips and ideas will help you and your children get through the next few weeks and come together as stronger families. By following the guidance given by national health officials and local authorities we all will be smarter individually and as a nation in regard to combating unexpected and dangerous health hazards and pandemics. Working from Home with Kids? How to Manage... FELONICE MERRIMAN

As of right now Palm Beach County Schools are not in session and there is a good chance that your boss has also sent you home to work remote! At first this might sound great! No commute, no getting ready for school in the morning and packing lunches. But now a week has gone by maybe two and reality is starting to set in you still have a job to do and now you have virtual school! What to do? Here are some tips to hopefully ease some of the pain we will all be experiencing in the next couple of weeks (or longer). Set Up a Workstation First things first! Your child or children are going to need a distraction free place to do their schoolwork. One of the first things I did was set up a table for my kids iwth two chromebooks that their school gave them. I set myself up nearby to work as

14 April 2020| PB Parenting |

well- close enough I can keep an eye on them but far enough I can still do my work. Do you still need to hold meetings or take calls? Check out getting a headset with a noise-canceling microphone and mute button. This will be helpful to block out noisy children during calls. Allowing Independence This is a great time for your children can start being a little independent. Let them craft or read on their own. If you can watch them in the yard, take your tablet or computer outside and let them play. Fill a snack basket so they can help themselves and not rely on you for everything. I have arranged the bottom refrigerator and pantry shelf where my kids, ages 11 and 8, can grab drinks and cheese sticks or other approved snack foods without pestering me for snacks and drinks.

Take a Break and Work in Intervals Multitasking decreases efficiency, so try to separate work and family time. Set a timer for about 90 minutes to keep yourself and kids on track. Offer rewards if the kids don’t disturb you before the timer goes off. Take a break yourself maybe share a snack with your kids or go outside for a walk or a bike ride and get some fresh air.

know this isn’t a lazy Saturday. Set an alarm to get up at the same time every morning, schedule what time lunch is and create some kind of structure. Assign them academic time, creative time, outside recess. If the weather is bad youtube dance videos to burn off that energy. Create some downtime where they get to chose their favorite actvitity to do quietly.

Dividing Up Child Care Are there two adults working at home now? Or an older child who can look after young ones for a few hours? Maybe you have a grandparent nearby? I am very lucky my parents live next door to me so that allows for outdoor recess time with Nana and Papa. If you have a partner that works at home as well, check in and see if you can help each other out taking shifts especially if one has a big project or deadline.

If your children are older, explain to them that you have work that must get done and they can help you out if they could work independently on their activities. Tell them the sooner you get done with your work the closer we get to having fun!

Establish a Schedule Does it need to be color coded? NO! But do have a routine in place so the children

Don’t Be Hard on Yourself Cut yourself some slack. These days ahead will not be perfect and maybe some days your kids had a little too much screen time so you could get your work done. This is temporary, and it will be ok in the long run when things return to normal. Stay safe and sane!

Now’s the Time to Teach At-Home Nutrition With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. Consider these simple suggestions from Melanie Marcus, MA, RD, health and nutrition communications manager for Dole Food Company. Healthy Snack Time Taste Tests Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. Purposeful Playtime - Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime.

Sensory Activity - One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. Recipes for Fun - If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. For example, try this fun, fruity recipe for Kids with Almond Toast. Food Groups Focus - Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance. Find more at-home tips

Also explain why brushing teeth is important by reminding children that food can get stuck in teeth and cause cavities.
