Letter From The Publisher Greetings, There are less than 54 days until the end of school. How are you going to spend your summer? I am excited about our first full normal summer — no late dismissal like last year. There are a lot of fun, great camps to check out starting on page 22. April is also our baby and maternity issue; my babies are so big now but reading local nurse Rachel Da Silva's labor tips on page 8 took me back to their births like it was yesterday. I only wish I had her help and expertise when I had my kids! I love checking out baby name trends. Check out page 16 for the trending names of 2022. Some classics like Olivia and Noah have been on the top 30 names for a while. I love to see what other names are popular. Pop-culture names like Aria (thanks to Game of Thrones) made the list. Also, Alexander moved up the boys' list due to the influence of the musical Hamilton. It is a busy month for holidays. Passover and Easter are coming up this month. The kids and I have been watching Netflix's "Is it Cake?" And now we want to make this cute "Bunny Butt" Cake on page 18. Not only will it be tasty, but it will decorate your dinner table and sure to get some laughs too. We even have a link to a step-by-step video! Don't forget we are your LOCAL parenting resource and a wealth of information. We are here 24/7 online at www.pbparenting.com or connect to our Facebook Group, Palm Beach County Moms! We are almost 14,000 LOCAL moms strong. It is so easy to reach out to such a resource of savvy moms. Our group is over 11 years old, so we have veteran moms (and even some grandmothers) down to expectant moms looking for their first pediatrician. Labor Secrets from a Maternity Nurse BY RACHEL DA SILVA, RN, BSN, CLC As your little one is about to make his or her grand entrance, there are a few signs that you should be aware of. Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish false labor (Braxton Hicks) from true labor. In this article, I will share my all of my labor secrets that I learned after years of hospital experience. We will talk about signs/ stages of labor and breathing techniques to help you progress as safely and quick as possible. Mental Preparation Before you have your baby, I cannot express enough the power of positive thinking! Here are a few labor secrets to help keep you positive as your prepare for the birth of your child: 1. Remember the power of your words – Words have an amazing ability to affect how our body works. Stop with the negative talk and the negative emotions. Keep in mind that you might have to watch who you are hanging out with. The friends who speak negativity into your life are not who you need right now. You need a positive support system as your progress through your 8 April 2022| PB Parenting |
pregnancy and labor. 2. Do not neglect what gives you joy – If you love music, listen to music! If you go to church, keep going to church! If you are a member of a book club, keep reading those books! Try to the best of your ability to continue doing the things that give you joy. 3. Keep your support system close – Try your best to keep your family and support team close to you. Be open with your wishes regarding your labor, delivery, and childcare. Signs of Labor I developed some signs that can help you figure out if this is true or false labor. If you are at risk for premature birth (vaginal bleeding, cerclage, multiples, previous premature delivery) please consult with your physician at the first sign of discomfort or labor. Here are some labor secrets that the baby might be coming soon: 1. Lightening: When the baby starts moving down you will feel intense pressure on your bladder. Although it does not necessarily mean your delivery will come right then and there, that does mean your labor is going in

Usually you will be admitted to the hospital when you are in active labor. This is usually when you are above 4 cm dilation. This is also a good time to have an epidural if that is your decision. The Transition phase is usually when your contractions are the heaviest and it usually progressed very fast. You might find that you were stuck in the active phase for 12 hours, then you hit 7 and one hour later you are checked and you are ready to push. Just stay in-tune with your body and stay calm. However, there is a lot of suspense as you head into the unknown. Here are a few labor secrets to help you progress through your labor faster: 1. Keep calm – Stress will prolong your labor and prevent you from dilating effectively. Your body needs to relax in order to progress. 2. Manage your breathing – Labor naturally will decrease the level of oxygen going to your baby. This is because each contractions constricts blood flow to the placenta, just for a moment. You want to have calm breathing to help your baby regain the lost oxygen. 3. Keep your bladder as empty as possible
– If you have an epidural you might have a catheter draining your urine 4. Manage your pain as needed – Make sure you discuss with your healthcare team your wishes regarding pain management during labor. If you are in too much pain it places a lot of stress on the body and will make it very difficult to breathe and progress through your labor. Non-Pharmacological Labor Secrets There are many ways to manage your pain, and it is important to discuss your wishes with your family and healthcare team. The pain management technique that you should always start with is breathing. You want to have a focus point, and control your breathing. This will help calm you down, and will also help delivery oxygen to your baby. Labor naturally will decrease the level of oxygen going to

Just make sure that it is a soft sigh, because screaming actually decreases blood flow to the placenta, and stresses you out and delays your labor. Fill muffin tins 2/3 full and bake 18-20 minutes. The remaining batter goes into an oven-safe bowl to bake for 1 hour, 40 minutes.
This cake is fun and bright with a fluffy, moist interior. Then add butter gradually, 6 tablespoons at a time, for a total of 12 tablespoons. 18 April 2022| PB Parenting |
The buttercream frosting is made with powdered sugar, butter, milk, vanilla extract and coconut extract. Assemble the cake using pretzel sticks to blend it together to make the bunny butt shape. DAY CAMP CHECKLIST • Mask (with it being hot for summer pack a couple so your child can swap them out if they get wet or sweat) Check the camp's mask policy. • Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes • Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45 • Insect repellant wipes and/or insect repellent wristband (do not send an aerosol can of insect repellant–the spray will sting if it gets in your child’s eyes.) • Bathing suit and towel • Water bottle filled with ice-cold water • Hat and Sunglasses • Comfortable running shoes or closed-toe sports sandals WITH socks
• Extra set of clothes (especially a pair of socks and shirt if they get wet from the rain) • Rain poncho (rolls up small) • Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful. • Food: Some day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack. Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have.
