Letter From The Publisher Greetings, When I first wrote last month about all the changes that were happening due to COVID-19 (schools closing, businesses closing, events cancelled) I never imagined as we enter into the month of May we would be here still in limbo. Attending school is out and we are remaining hopeful that we can attend camp and get back to some normalcy. We are all in this together. The staff of PB Parenting are right here with you trying to balance virtual schooling, bored kids and run a publication at the same time. This is not the easiest of times to be a parent. Speaking of being a parent, Mother’s Day will be here shortly. This defnitely will be a quieter mother’s day than in year’s past but we have some ideas on how your family (hint hint) can make it better for you! Check out page 8 for ideas to celebrate. Maybe print it out and leave it on the counter for someone to find. Sometimes they need a little extra help! PB Parenting wishes you a Happy Mother’s Day and hope it is special and full of love no matter how you spend it. The end of the month also marks the end of the official “school year”. We are uncertain what Summer plans will hold but whatever it is, we are here to pass along the information to our community of parents. Most camps would love to host a physical camp if they are able to and many are preparing for the possiblity of virtual camps. Join us on the week of May 18th on our social media channels for a series of virtual events to learn what the options are for summer. We will be spotlighting camps, talking to camp directors about the curriculum, changes in sanitation, safety, and more! We will also be registering to enter fun summer giveaways! Hope to see you there (virtually of course). Stay safe,

Happy Virtually Stay
at Home Mother’s Day BY FELONICE MERRIMAN
Mother’s Day 2020. This certainly wasn’t the Mother’s Day I was expecting this year with South Florida at the moment still under Stay at Home orders. I can promise you that I won’t be heading out to my favorite brunch spot on Mother’s Day or maybe getting pampered with a pedicure at my favorite nail spa. Just because we are stuck at home does that mean the whole day is a wash? Absolutely not! Here are some ideas on how to make your “Stay at Home” Mother’s Day as good as it can be considering the circumstances. We have also included some virtual suggestions so if grandma is far away (or you can’t visit due to risk of spreading illness) you can include her into some of your plans to celebrate! 1. Throw a (Real or Virtual!) Tea Party The weather is perfect for an outside tea party! Sandwiches are also easy for
8 May 2020| PB Parenting |
family to help assemble and treat you to lunch! Don’t forget little desserts as well. If grandma is away, you could send her a tin of cookies and she can join you on facetime or zoom too! Make tea even easier and order High tea to go from Serenity Tea Garden. Learn more about their Mother’s Day tea special at www. serenitygardentea.com. They will be doing curbside high tea but please order as early as you can as there will be limited High Teas available for pickup. 2. Make Art together Want to make a gift with Mom or paint something for Nana or Abuelito? Order online: Picasso’s Creative Workshop, https://my-site-103984-108964.square. site/. Pick up your kit using our no contact curbside pick up at studio or free local delivery. You can make it ahead of time or paint it together on Mother’s Day.
3. Flip Through a Custom Photo Album Go through your photos and head to a site like Shutterfly to create a custom photo album highlighting favorite moments together from the past year—think family vacations, birthday parties, holidays, and more. If you need something for a grandmother that is away. Order a copy for yourself and grandma, then flip through it together in-person or on the phone and relive those blissful times. (Besides, aren’t extra photos of grandkids exactly what she needs right now?) 3. Have Dad Fire up the Grill Maybe you aren’t a “tea and crumpets” kind of mom and more “beer and barbecue,” Have Dad do all the work and fire up the grill and you can sit back with a laid-back lawn party. If you don’t have a pool to relax in you can get a cute inflatable adult size one (see page 6) cool off in the backyard, enjoy some sun and

have your family take care of you all day! 4. Treat Mom to a Meal Out Everyone should get a break from cooking on Mom’s special day. Whether it be breakfast or brunch, lunch or dinner, “take Mom out” for a meal at her favorite local restaurant that’s offering local pickup or delivery. 5. Breakfast in Bed First off, let mom sleep in! Seriously that is all we want. then when she wakes up start off Mom’s special day by ordering up a tray full of her favorite breakfast goodies and having them delivered right to her bed. 6. Explore the Great Outdoors Get the family moving with a hike or a bike ride (but make sure to maintain social distance from others) local parks have now re-opened and they have some great local trails to explore. Pack a picnic or snacks for afterwards or take a break mid-trail. 7. Spend Time in Her Garden Visit the local nursery and have Mom pick out some new flowers or vegetables for her garden, then help her plant them when you get home. Pitch in with weeding or watering while you’re at it— she’ll appreciate the gesture.
mom a new oil diffuser and fill the room wth soothing scents and take in a family yoga session together. 10. Make a pizza and settle in for one of her favorite movies Who doesn’t love a movie night? Buy some pizza dough (or make it from scratch) and have your kids add the toppings to whip together a gourmet pizza that you can nosh on while taking in one of her favorite flicks (or two)! Maybe put on of your favorite movies from your childhood to share with the kids. (After all it is your day and you get to pick! Disney plus will be airing the classic movie, The Princess Bride starting start May 1.) 11. Sing and Dance the Day away! Are you a mom that loves to sing and dance? Have a Karaoke session with your family. Set yourself up with a home karaoke machine and let the fun begin. Add other family members via Zoom for even better laughs. You could also have a Dance competition on your gaming system or with games like Dance Charades (on amazon).
8. DIY Spa Day Do you usually send mom to the spa for Mother’s Day? Create a spa experience at home for her. Let her enjoy a relaxing bath (maybe purchase some new bath bombs or or order detoxifying bath salts). Purchase her a new robe to wear. Indulge in an athome facial, including a peel, a hydrating mask, and a face massage, or maybe even an at-home mani-pedi, the day is filled with opportunities for self-care.
12. Put Together A Care Package Can’t visit your mom? Send a care package to Nana. If she is local you can even drop it off curbside. Think of the things your mom loves most and throw together a care package to send her. If she’s a movie buff send popcorn, candies, and her favorite DVD; if she likes curling up with a good book send her one of your favorites and a box of tea; if she could use some more relaxation, a candle or soft blanket will be much appreciated. Add in some framed family photos or other sentimental items for a personal touch.
9. Zen Mom For the spirtually in-tune mom, why not join a zoom yoga class together. Order
13. Tech Mom Out We have all been spending more time at home and while at home we are

probably on some kind of electronic device. Maybe it is time to UPGRADE MOM with the latest technolgoy. A new iPad, tablet or kindle, a new apple watch, AirPod or wireless headphones to listen to music (even better noise-cancelling headphones so she can tune it all out) or a blue tooth speaker. Mom might appreciate a new apple watch or fitbit to help her count her steps. Maybe it is time to upgrade her cell phone to the latest model. We are all using techology to stay connected and informed. PB Parenting hopes that your Mother’s Day is the best it can be given the situation. However you decide to spend your day, realize that this is temporary. Hopefully soon your family can spoil you more at a later date with a meal at your favorite restaurant or pamper you with a spa day or a night out with your friends. Personally I am looking forward to a meal that I don’t have to cook!

Community Cares Water Safety Raises Awareness to Prevent Childhood Drowning. Pediatric Drownings on the rise this year.
In the time it takes to throw in a load of dirty laundry... Pool safety is everyone’s responsibility. Drowning can be a silent catastrophe, one that can happen in the few minutes you take to answer a phone call or run inside for a towel. Florida leads the country in drowning deaths of children ages 1–4. Florida currently has 14 pediatric drownings since the beginning of the year, a 100% increase from the same time last year. Families are home more during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s easier than ever to be distracted, but experts warn parents to stay vigilant. Most infant drownings occur in bathtubs and buckets. Children ages 1-4 are more likely to drown in home swimming pools. Children 5+ are most likely to drown in natural bodies of water. Learn the steps you can take to secure your pool and protect Florida’s children. The Layers of Protection Keep pool time fun by incorporating layers of protection! Supervision, barriers, and being prepared for emergencies help to prevent drownings and keep children safe. 14 May 2020| PB Parenting |
LAYER 1: SUPERVISION Supervision, the first and most crucial layer of protection! This means a responsible someone, usually an adult, is always actively watching when a child is in, on or around the water. Drowning is usually a silent catastrophe, one that can happen in a second! By the time it takes you to answer a phone call or run inside for a towel a drowning can occur. For children ages 1–4, the majority of drownings occur in residential swimming pools. Children should never be allowed to swim or play near pool drains, and should be taught the dangers of pool drains and pipes. When you teach children, and the whole family, about water safety, everyone can help be accountable for supervision. The “Water Watcher” A Water Watcher is a responsible adult who is assigned the role of watching all the children who are in or near the water. The Water Watcher focuses on the children at all times without distractions. This means: NO cell phones. NO books. NO ear pods. NO conversations. If multiple adults are
present, take turns acting as the Water Watcher. Have the Water Watcher wear a lanyard so they don’t forget whose turn it is to watch the children. A Water Watcher tag is available for download at www. watersmartfl.com. LAYER 2: BARRIERS A child should never be able to enter the pool area unaccompanied. Barriers physically block a child from accessing the pool. Keep chairs and objects away from barriers so children do not climb them to gain access to the water.

The Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (Chapter 515, Florida Statutes) requires one of the following pool safety measures for pools built after October 1, 2000: • A pool fence with a self-closing, selflatching gate — enclosing the pool and providing no direct access to it. • An approved pool cover which is fitted to your pool; a simple canvas covering can be a drowning hazard and can entrap a child

Drowning is the LEADING cause of accidental death in children ages 1-4 and it is 100% PREVENTABLE! This is how: • Constant Adult Supervision • Doors/Windows - Locked and Alarmed at All Times • Install 4-Sided Pool Fence with Self-Locking Gates • Remove/Lock Pet Doors • Quality Self-Rescue Swim Lessons • Learn CPR and Update Your Skills Regularly Learn More At:

in the water. • Alarms on all doors and windows leading out to the pool. • A self-closing, self-latching device on all doors that provide direct access from the home to the pool; the release mechanism must be no lower than 54 inches above the floor. The Florida Department of Health recommends that all pools, at a minimum, use a combination of the barriers described above to help ensure safety around your pool. In order for barriers to work, they must be in good working order, on, and/ or locked. Please see the State Laws tab at www.watersmartfl.com to learn more about the Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act LAYER 3: EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Everyone should know the basics of swimming, including floating, treading and moving through the water. Formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent. It’s never too late to learn to swim, make it a family activity and learn together. In an emergency, it is critical to have a phone nearby to immediately call 911. Know your location, what type of emergency and what help is being administered. It is also important to learn CPR and First Aid. Check with the American Heart Association, American Red Cross and/ or the American Safety and Health Institute for more information on lifesaving classes. When enjoying open bodies of water such as lakes, springs, rivers or oceans, you should have a safety plan and equipment before going. When boating, children and adults should wear life jackets, even if they know how to swim. Weaker swimmers should wear life jackets when swimming in all bodies of water. Lifejackets are NOT a replacement for supervision!

The Live Like Jake Foundation is working locally in our community to prevent pediatric drownings by raising awareness and by financially assisting families providing scholarships for ISR Self Rescue swim lessons. After losing their son in a drowning accident in 2013, Keri and Roarke Morrison made it their mission that no parent should go through the same experience they did. Live Like Jake preserves their son’s memory while helping to prevent childhood drowning. Live Like Jake supports ISR Self-Rescue swim lessons to help prevent drowning deaths and near-drowning tragedies among infants and young children. They also have financially assisted families that have been affected by near-drowning hospitalizations and prolonged medical issues. How can you help? The Foundation hosts a variety of community events during the year that you or your family can get involved with. It is a great way to help and support them.
