Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there (adoptive moms, foster moms, bio moms, grandmothers, and more)! Our day is coming up! I hope you get to sleep in, someone makes your coffee and breakfast, and your kids are well behaved. At least, that is what I am hoping for. We have many great ideas for what to do for mom this Mother’s Day (FYI, in case you don’t know, it’s May 9). Whatever, you do I am sure it will be better than last year’s pandemic Mother’s Day. We aren’t even going to talk about last year. Due to the late start of school last year, school will not end like it usually does at the end of May. The last day of school is June 18, giving you a little extra time to plan out your summer camp experience. I am sure the kids can’t wait to have a fun summertime this year. We have a lot of fun options for kids of ALL ages and camps tailored to their interests and likes from Jupiter down to Boca Raton. Also, don’t forget our summer camp directory is online 24/7 with the latest listings. We even have an interactive map and drop-down menus to sort by categories. Check it out at www.pbparenting.com. I love to connect with our fellow local moms. You can find me online in Palm Beach County Moms and our co-ed group Palm Beach Parents. I have personally lived in Palm Beach County for over 11 years and would love to help be your resource as well as the other admins in our groups. Let us know how we can help. Our group is an invaluable local parenting resource. Happy Parenting,

The Power of Love A Tribute to Mom

Newlyweds Jamie Lober and William Baker are products of different yet positive parenting styles. “My mom taught me to dance like no one’s watching, sing like no one’s listening, and love like you have never been hurt,” said Lober. Baker’s upbringing included listening to classic rock but was a lot less carefree. “My family life taught me to be independent, and it helps me take care of my [soon-to-be] wife,” said Baker. Baker is hardworking, loving, and nurturing and told that his fiancé gives back in all the right ways. “Jamie’s beautiful music affects our relationship very much, and I love the music as well as how she is always happy and has a sparkle in her attitude,” said Baker. Trained by the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music, Lober is a professional pianist, keyboardist, and vocalist who transfers that sparkle into performances 8 May 2021| PB Parenting |

filled with jazz, high energy, and glitter despite suffering the loss of both parents in the last five years. “The music is my calling, and nothing makes me happier than playing [piano] and singing about all my joys and sorrows,” said Lober. Lober shared that growing up, she was the queen of her house, belting out tunes into a microphone at a very young age and creating her own programs for piano concerts in her living room. “I always had an audience, and if it was not my parents, it was my dog,” said Lober. Lober’s parents showed her the importance of the arts growing up as they frequented the Kravis Center, Four Arts, Ann Norton Sculpture Garden, and many concerts. “Seeing Cher as a child was a dream come true as the show was moving, glamorous, emotionally charged, and just the definition of a performer to me,” said Lober.

As a young adult, Lober described her parents’ marriage as “perfect.” Her mother made the decision to become a caregiver to her spouse when he faced a health challenge, and Lober copied the model she saw when her mother was in need. “I provided care through music and left the rest to healthcare professionals and prayer,” said Lober. Baker had the privilege of gigging with Lober’s late mother, who became known as momager for Lober’s brand Music From The Heart 305. “She was very sweet, friendly and we had a great relationship. I loved her,” said Baker. Lober rated her late mother’s management skills as top-notch. “She set up equipment, made signs and tip jars, greeted people, took pictures and videos, and made notes on the setlist every night we went out such as what songs people sang with, applauded or tipped and we would come home and discuss,” said Lober. Lober prides herself on customizing setlists to be diverse and have all genres as well as some themed nights. “I try to live by the lyrics from Snow White where they say with a smile

and a song, life is just like a bright sunny day your cares fade away,” said Lober. Lober clings to music as the answer to most questions, including how she is coping with her losses, to which she cites an increase in music and self-teaching guitar. “My guitar is very personal to me and was a gift from my mom that we enjoyed during quarantine last year; she tuned him, and I played him,” said Lober. While she is protective of her beloved instruments and Baker does not get to play them, the couple is still very strong. “At times, grief affects our relationship, but we navigate through it very well,” said Baker. Palm Beach parents can learn from the unconditional love and benefits of a carefully chosen gift like a piano at a young age. “Jamie’s mom would say to love, cherish and always be there for your child and be their friend,” said Baker. It is safe to say that the future of these newlyweds is bright. “I imagine having Jamie’s dream wedding, and the [music] shows will go on,” said Baker.

10 Ways to Celebrate Mom on Mother’s Day

According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day spending is expected to total a near-record $28.1 billion this year. A total 83 percent of Americans will celebrate Mother’s Day and spend an average of $220.48 per person ($16 more than last year). Categories like jewelry and electronics are seeing record levels of spending this year. Does mom really need another “Mom” Necklace in a Heart? Or AirPods? (Ok, my airpods are pretty cool and I use them a lot).

I assure you, while these are all nice gifts, Mom is really needing something else. The survey found 29 percent of moms want to receive a “gift of experience” such as a spa day, tickets to a concert. Trinkets end up in a drawer but memories last a lifetime. Below are some simple and thoughtful ways to celebrate Mom. Maybe you can subtly leave 16 May 2021| PB Parenting |

this list out for someone to find...give them a little hint! 1. Give Mom a Break: Nothing says, “I love you,” like walking into the house and finding your partner has already cleaned it. I love when my son or daughter does chores without being asked. This Mother’s Day, relieve mom of her usual to-do’s by making it your responsibility. Are you too busy to do it yourself? Maybe hire a cleaning service to come in and do a deep clean or gift her a few cleanings for the next couple of months. Help Mom organize the clutter and pick up your toys! Maybe have the kids go through some items to donate. Less items less to clean! 2. Let Mom Sleep: It doesn’t matter if you have a newborn or a 10 year old, or if you are a stay at home mom or a working mom, I am guessing you are sleep deprived. Let mom

5. A Day Together: Set aside all other plans, grab the whole family and head to mom’s favorite park or the beach. Spending the time together (preferably outdoors) is what really counts, so have a picnic, go for a bike ride, take a hike. Enjoy the outdoors together as a family. If mom isn’t the outdoorsy type, take her to the movies or a museum. Just spend the day with her doing something she WANTS to do. 6. Keep the Peace: If you have more than one child you know about the ‘sibling squabbles” and how mom is often a referee in her own home. Talk to your children about a “peace treaty” for the day to give mom a break from the constant back and forth bickering. 7. Plant some flowers. Instead of buying flowers that will die in a week use some extra space in the yard to plant a flower garden for mom. Maybe even look at plants that attract sleep in, offer to take the children out so she can have a quiet house to rest in. While you are butterflies and make a butterfly garden. An extra bonus present would be to have the kids out, pick up some coffee or pastries and come home and surprise her. In the afternoon, let her paint and decorate some rocks (don’t forget to seal them). There are also plaster kits the take a nap. Is the baby still getting up in the kids can use to make “stepping stones” with middle of the night? Instead of her getting up give her a break and do the nighttime routine. their feet or hand prints that would make some memorable garden keepsakes. 3. Brunchin’ it: How many times does Mom make pancakes and eggs for everyone? Now it is your turn! Make her favorite items for breakfast. Surprise her with coffee or tea in bed. If cooking isn’t in your skill set, take her somewhere nice to enjoy their cooking or let her have some alone time brunching with her friends. Bonus points if bottomless mimosas are included. 4. Pamper Mom: Moms take care of everyone else’s needs but what about hers? Pampering can fit many gift giving budgets from a full day at the spa to something as simple as a manicure at her favorite nail salon. You can even pamper her at home with a nice foot rub or run her a bath, light some aroma therapy candles and give her some undisturbed time in the tub. I assure you any thoughtful gesture of some much needed pampering won’t go unnoticed. 18 May 2021| PB Parenting |

8. Take Mom to “Beyond Van Gogh” in Miami Immerse yourself in Van Gogh’s artwork like you’ve never seen it before. This event is fun for the whole family (and even stroller friendly). Using his dreams, his thoughts, and his words to drive the experience as a narrative, the creators move along projection swathed walls wrapped in light, colour, and shapes that swirl, dance and refocus into flowers, cafes and landscapes. Masterpieces, now freed from frames, come alive, appear and disappear, flow across multi-surfaces, the minutia of details titillating our heightened senses. Don’t miss this stunning journey into the world of Vincent Van Gogh! The experience is timed entry and can sell out - order tickets online at www. vangoghmiami.com. 9. Put Mom Back in the picture and schedule a Family Portrait session! Mom takes a lot of

photos of the kids but where is she? Make her feel glamorous and schedule a family photo session. Two great suggestions: Lynn Studios, Inc. or Warner Prokos Photography. When the photo session is finished make sure to frame them nicely or have canvases made to display in your home. 10. Create a piece of treasured art or a craft. If you’re not super creative, the experts can help! Head over to Picasso’s Creative Workshop in Lake Worth and give mom a handmade painted pottery piece (They even have funtional pottery pieces such as cute candle votive holders, jewelry holders and more) or sign the kids up for a fun art class at artNEST in Delray Beach and Boca Raton where they can create mom something special that she can treasure for many years.

FamilyFriendly Ideas for Summer Fun Warm, sunny days are the perfect setting for making family memories, but they’re also ideal opportunities to encourage kids to get creative and let their imaginations soar. These ideas for summertime activities encourage family interaction, and the more kids get to help plan and organize the details, the more engaged you can expect them to be. Visit Your Local Park Pack all the kids’ favorite snacks and beverages

to keep cool and hydrated. Choose your spot under a big shady tree and spread out for an impromptu picnic. Be sure to bring along outdoor toys for a game of catch or lighten the load and create a nature scavenger hunt with different types of leaves, rocks and flowers for kids to discover. If they come across an unfamiliar plant or animal, snap a picture with your phone so you can do some research on it when you get home. Encourage the kids to draw or design a piece of art reflecting the things they saw. Create Watercolor Paintings Away from the school setting, kids sometimes have fewer opportunities to practice expressing their ideas and getting creative. Fun tools can make an artistic session more exciting, so look for unique methods like blending Zebra Pen Mildliner Brush Pens with water and a paint brush to create fun, pastel watercolor paintings with minimal mess. The pens are conveniently double-ended with a paint brush-like tip on one end and fine marker tip on the other so you can precisely draw a design then create softer swirls of color using water and a brush.

Water Sponge Challenge Cool off with a fun and refreshing water fight with a few creative twists. First grab sponges, or water sponge balls, and a full bucket of water. The sponges are reusable so you can use them all summer long. Make it extra fun by organizing teams with kids against adults or everyone fending for themselves. Encourage kids to devise their own blockades and targets or adapt a classic game like baseball or dodgeball using water sponges in place of the usual balls. You could also do a sponge scavenger hunt to load up everyone’s buckets before the dousing begins. Find the Animals Visit your local Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoo or aquarium and have your kids find as many animals as they can from the AZA SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction species list. It’s a good opportunity to talk about the concept of extinction and why

these animals are on the list. Follow up the visit with an activity that reinforces how everyone has a role in conservation and look for ways to help protect each family member’s favorite animal. Make Oven S’mores On a rainy night (or any night) make a s’more by putting it in the oven. They turn out just as melty and gooey as the campfire version but with easier prep and cleanup. This is a tasty way to get those creative juices flowing. Experiment with different candies, such as peanut butter cups in place of chocolate bars. Or add different ingredients and have other family members guess the flavors. Find more ideas for creative inspiration this summer at zebrapen.com/art-studio/creativetips. • Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful. • Food: Some day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack. Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have. Optional: • Change purse with $1-$2 for snacks • Benadryl cream for itchy mosquito bites

Summer Camp Directory in our June Issue

The Friday before Memorial Day is declared National Road Trip Day and serves as the official kickoff of the summer road trip season. Millions of Americans hit the road each year over the long weekend, visiting friends and family while paying tribute to our American heroes.

road trips are often a rite of passage. Sometimes we endure them, often hearing, “Are we there yet?” And other times we never want them to end; sometimes getting lost can be even more fun than the original plan.

Getting There Two-thirds of American drivers (54 percent)* Road trips that begin and end with happy report an increase in the number of trips they passengers are always the best. Here are a few plan to take this summer and more than half tips to keep in mind. (53%) of people plan to take a road trip. And we • Plan ahead. Plot your course. Consider construction, fuel and snack stops, shopping, and the interests of the other travelers. • Road trippers prioritize convenience and efficiency, primarily (58 percent) wanting to stop at all-in-one rest stops (offers gas, food, drinks, coffee, bathrooms, and more.). • Specifically, the top “road trip essential” snacks are chips and salty foods (52 percent), freshly made, grab-and-go foods (50 percent), and fast food options (49 percent). How do you travel? There are two kinds of people who take road trips. If you’re going together, you might want to discuss a compromise before hitting the road! The tourist takes their time getting there and doesn’t mind taking backroads to see long-

forgotten ghost towns. On the other hand, the pilot enjoys seeing the country from the car, sets a course, and frowns upon unscheduled stops or side trips. No matter the destination, road trips include an element of expectation, and they rarely disappoint. The best road trips bring us closer to people over a stick of beef jerky and car karaoke. They connect us to places through memories, a postcard, and the kindness of strangers.
