Community News Live Like Jake Invites Families to Help Save Lives this Summer with 6th Annual Watermelons for Water Safety Event Live Like Jake, the local foundation created in the memory of Jake Roarke Morrison, is inviting children and families of all ages to help prevent the #1 cause of accidental death in children by hosting a watermelon stand this summer. The funds raised from the stands provide families in need with lifesaving Infant Self-Rescue (ISR) lessons. The 6th Annual Watermelons for Water Safety event takes place at any location, around the country, from June 1 – August 30th. How it works: • Select a location and date for your stand. • Register with www.livelikejake.com/events • Download event materials. • Spread the word! Participants can sell anything watermelonrelated including popsicles, candy, juice and sparkling water. Safety guidelines, suggestions and materials are all available at the Live Like Jake website. Businesses are invited to join in via group booths or sponsoring a booth. “Summer is here and with that, the cases of accidental drowning increase,” says Live Like Jake founder, Keri Morrison. “Recent tragic events have shown the critical need for water safety measures as well as for ISR instruction. Watermelons for Water Safety stands not only raise funds for us to provide those instructions for families in need, but also serve to raise 18 June 2021| PB Parenting |
awareness about water safety. It only takes a minute for tragedy to happen, and we want to spare any parent from ever having to face the loss of a child.” Following the 2013 tragic drowning of their 2 year-old son, Keri Morrison and her husband Roarke created the Live Like Jake Foundation to raise awareness of childhood drowning prevention. Partnering with other drowning prevention agencies and instructors, supporting other families who have experienced the same loss, and connecting with their community, the Foundation has been able to provide thousands of ISR scholarships and recently opened northern Palm Beach County’s first indoor, heated pool dedicated to ISR. For information about future events, scholarships, or the Foundation, please visit www.livelikejake.com or call 561.441.7611. About The Live Like Jake Foundation Committed to honoring the life and joy of Jake Roarke Morrison, our foundation’s mission is to raise awareness for drowning prevention. We achieve this by providing ISR infant self-rescue swim lesson scholarships to those who cannot afford them and also by providing financial assistance to those families who have lost a child or have a child with critical care needs. Adopt-A-Manatee® for Father’s Day to Protect Manatees and Our Waterways What to give the dad who has everything he needs? A manatee, of course! Adopt-A-Manatee from Save the Manatee Club for Father’s Day and give dad the gift of helping to protect manatees and their aquatic habitat for future generations to come. Don’t worry, he won’t have to take care of or clean up after the manatee. Each symbolic manatee adoption includes a biography and photograph of a real-life Florida manatee identified by researchers. Choose a manatee with a unique name, like “Flash,” known to speed away quickly when spooked, or one with a special story, like “Nick,” known for traveling the opposite way of most migrating manatees. Along with a personalized adoption certificate of dad or grandpa’s new manatee, he’ll also receive a passport wallet with each $35 adoption, for a limited time. Why give a manatee this Father’s Day? Manatees and their habitat are in peril, and they need our support. More manatees have died so far in 2021 than in all of 2020 – over 700 individuals – due to starvation and loss of habitat, watercraft collisions, cold temperatures, and other threats. Harmful algal blooms in the Indian River Lagoon on the east coast of Florida, a critical habitat for manatees,
have decimated the seagrasses and aquatic vegetation that manatees need to eat. Save the Manatee Club is working with conservation partners and state and federal agencies to study the problem, support seagrass and submerged aquatic vegetation restoration, work together on manatee rescues and rehabilitation, and advocate for stronger manatee and habitat protections. “While manatees are herbivores and do not have prey or predators, they are an essential component of the aquatic ecosystems in which they live,” explains Patrick Rose, Aquatic Biologist and Executive Director for Save the Manatee Club. “Manatees act as indicator species, and if their health is poor, then the health of the vegetation and invertebrates in their environment is also at risk.” Without healthy manatees and seagrasses, dad’s favorite activities, like saltwater fishing or relaxing by beautiful waterways, might change for the worse. An Adopt-A-Manatee gift supports protections for these essential habitats. Please order by June 6th for delivery by Father’s Day. Personalized adoption certificates are also instantly emailed, so manatee adoptions make a great last-minute gift! Visit savethemanatee.org.

the Garden and find solitude in the peacefulness that these magnificent blooms radiate,” said Christine Hobart, Executive Director.
McKee’s ponds and waterways are adorned with one of the state’s largest collections of waterlilies which features hundreds of fragrant and colorful tropical and hardy waterlilies. The Garden’s waterlily collection includes over 80 varieties with over 300 potted and 100 free-range plants including night-blooming and day-blooming varieties.
The Garden will open early at 8:30 am to afford visitors an opportunity to witness some of the night-blooming varieties before they retreat.
Each year, hundreds of horticulturalists, photographers and garden enthusiasts visit the Garden for a special opportunity to enjoy these wonders of nature. Visitors can observe handson repotting demonstrations by McKee’s plant experts and ask questions about the various species, variety of colors, growing periods, blooming frequencies and growing tips. In addition, the Garden will have plant vendors on site selling aquatic plants and bromeliads. “We look forward to this event every year when things slow down and we have an opportunity to take time to appreciate one of nature’s most amazing gifts. Waterlilies have been a part of McKee since its onset in the 1930s. We hope that our members and guests will come relax, stroll 22 June 2021| PB Parenting |

TRAVELS & Places to go Georgia on My Mind... Photos and Story by Felonice Merriman
Ghost & Cemetery Tours, Beautiful Squares, Southern Food, History and Art Museums... so much to do... Savannah, Georgia, is just a short drive up the coast and a perfect spot for either a family trip or a romantic couples-only getaway. The southern food is fantastic here (three words shrimp and grits). The history is rich (Do we have any Hamilton fans? We went to the house that Lafayette stayed at and gave a speech from its balcony to the people of Savannah.) Savannah is also the home to the largest historic district in the US. The buildings and architecture are so beautiful. The town is brimming with Southern charm and hospitality. There is a variety of activities to take in during your stay. While we were there, we went on a ghost tour, toured the Bonaventure cemetery, 32 June 2021| PB Parenting |

get in for one price). We also had the most fantastic food, from a low country seafood boil to oysters and shrimp and grits; the seafood is fresh!
The city is incredibly walkable - we parked our car and barely used it during our entire 3-day weekend. We also picked up some trolly passes and used them during our time to get across town. Speaking of walking, a little tip I learned from a local is that you can walk around the entire historic district with an open beverage (the adult kind) as long as it is in a plastic cup. Also, most restaurants and bars offer to-go cocktails. So pack some comfortable walking shoes; you will need them and hop up the coast to the beautiful city of Savannah, Georgia.
