Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Summer is flying by too fast! We have just a little over a month before we head back to school. I hope you have been enjoying the summertime. We have been having a great summer so far, but the temperatures are starting to heat up! So we have some fun ways to stay cool in the 10th annual Beat the Heat issue. Inside you'll find our yearly guide, tips, events and even fun no-cook snacks! We are working hard at staying cool over the next two to three months when temperatures can get over 90 degrees and feel like 100!! I have to say that in mid-June, I was done with school - physically, mentally, just done. We have definitely been slacking off these past few weeks and enjoying summer sleep-in and going on vacation. But we are back on working to make sure the Summer Slide doesn't creep in. Check out page 12 for some great daily tips you can do with your child an hour or less a day to help keep their school skills sharp over the summer. It won't be long until we will be prepping to go back to school. If your child isn't crazy about reading every day, check out page 16 for additional help to get your child in summer reading mode. I have been slacking on the reading stack myself, so a great idea is to sit and read while your child is reading. (Note: my children are older 9 and 12 and read independently and silently this will not work with the little ones.) Reading is also a great afternoon activity to do when it is too hot outside. I hope you spend these last weeks of summer staying cool and having fun!!! Happy Parenting,

10 Ways To Keep Cool When It’s Hot Wow it is hot out! It is hard to keep your cool in South Florida when temperatures reach the mid 90s for the next few months. It is important to stay cool not only for your comfort but your safety. Dangerously high temperatures can result in heat-related illnesses ranging from heat cramps to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The following tips can help you keep cool all summer long. 1. Beat the sun and heat with an early morning or evening activity or workout. 2. Try to stay in the shade when outdoors during peak sunlight. 3. Wear loose-fitting clothing, preferably of a light color. Also cotton clothing will keep you cooler than many synthetics. 4. Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator for a quick refreshing spray to your face after being outdoors or take it on the go with you! 5. Fans can help circulate air and make you feel cooler even in an air-conditioned house. 6. Try storing lotions or cosmetic toners in the refrigerator to use on hot, overtired feet. 8 July 2021| PB Parenting |
7. Keep plastic bottles of water in the freezer; grab one when you’re ready to go outside. As the ice melts, you’ll have a supply of cold water with you. 8. Take frequent baths or showers with cool or tepid water. 9. Combat dehydration by drinking plenty of water along with sports drinks or other sources of electrolytes. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration. 10. Instead of hot foods, try lighter summer fare including frequent small meals or snacks containing cold fruit or low fat dairy products. As an added benefit, you won’t have to cook next to a hot stove. Finally, use common sense. If the heat is intolerable, stay indoors when you can and avoid activities in direct sunlight or on hot asphalt surfaces. Pay special attention to the elderly, infants, and anyone with a chronic illness, as they may dehydrate easily and be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Don’t forget that pets also need protection from dehydration and heat-related illnesses too.

Summer Slide? You may have heard of this term, but what is it? The Summer Slide is the tendency for children to lose some of the academic gains made during the previous school year. Research has shown that children experience significant learning loss over the summer. This past school year has even been more challenging for all; students, parents, and teachers. We have had a few weeks to catch a break from school. But as we approach the halfway point of summer, parents must not forget about the "summer slide" that can happen to students. Summer Slide can cause a decline in reading ability and other academic skills such as math that can occur over the summer months when school is not in session. Not all students are

affected by the summer slide, but a large percentage are. It is the responsibility of parents to encourage reading and academics, even during the summer. Here are some tips to keep the Summer Slide away. Reading: • Have your child read every day for 20 minutes. Children read more when the important adults in their lives are also readers, so pick up a book and read. If your child is an independent reader, you can carve out a time to sit in the same room and read together. This would be an excellent opportunity to relax and read a book together. Maybe make an afternoon snack that can be enjoyed together while reading. Create a daily ritual of reading together. This time allows you to relax and bond with your child. • Stock up on new books! Visit book stores or libraries or even create a book swap with friends to allow them to always have a new book handy to read. It can even be magazines or comic books, anything to get them reading. • Ask questions. Get your child talking about what they are reading. Make sure to ask about the story and characters. Ask your child's opinion of the book, who their favorite character, and would they recommend it to friends? • Start a Book Club with friends. This is an excellent way for pre-teens and teenagers

to stay connected over the summer. Have them read the same book with their friends and discuss it. This can even be done virtually over facetime or zoom. Writing Reading isn't the only skill at risk of being lost. Writing is a critical skill that is affected by Summer. Writing every day in the summer encourages our kids to share their thoughts,
For beginning writers, have them write a sentence and draw a corresponding picture. You could ask them to describe what they saw on a trip or vacation or outing. Ensure that they focus on using capitals, finger spaces, punctuation, and sounding out their words. For older children that are independent writers, there are a few more ideas. You could have keep a journal or create a comic book. They could also get community service hours and write thank-you notes to soldiers or create birthday and holiday cards for homebound seniors. community service project that is great way for pre-teens and teens to earn community services hours. Make holiday and birthday cards for local seniors. It really cheers them up and brings a smile to their face! Cards will be distributed during various JFS holiday food deliveries and on seniors' birthdays. Earn one hour of community service for every five cards you make! For additional information, visit: http://ralesjfs.org/cardmaking Math Math is everywhere! • When you go to the store use cash instead of your card and have your child count the change. • Have your child count their snack, one goldfish, two goldfish. • When you are shopping for groceries count fruits and vegetables. • When you are driving around town, count different objects or read ut numbers on son. • When baking together, this is an excellent
opportunity to teach fractions. • Older children should focus on learning their multiplication facts and being able to memorize those. Flash cards and grade appropriate workbooks are helpful with practicing. • Soduku puzzles are another great way to get your child to use their critical thinking. Spending just a little time each day will hopefully keep the Summer Slide away!

Raising a Summer Reader When the lazy days of summer arrive and your child's schedule is packed with swimming, camp, and family vacations, it can be a challenge to find time for reading. But kids' reading skills don't have to stop growing just because school's out. Here are some ways to make reading a natural part of their summer fun: Explore your library. Visit your local library to check out books and magazines that your kids haven't seen before. Many libraries have summer reading programs, book clubs, and reading contests for even the youngest borrowers. There are often incentives, such as a free book upon completing their summer reading lists. Young kids will feel extra grownup checking out books with their own library card. Read on the road. Going on a long car trip? Make sure the back seat is stocked with favorite reads. When you're not at the wheel, you can read the books aloud. Get some audio books (many libraries have large selections) and listen to them together during drive time. Make your own books. Pick one of your family's favorite parts of summer — whether it's baseball, ice cream, vacation, or the pool — and have your child draw or cut out related 16 July 2021| PB Parenting |
pictures from magazines and catalogs. Paste the pictures onto paper to make a book, and then encourage your child to write text for each page. A younger child can dictate the story for you to write down (using your child's words). When you're done, read the book together. Keep in touch. Kids don't have to go away to write about summer vacation. Even if your family stays home, you can encourage your child to send postcards, letters, or e-mails to friends and relatives. Ask a relative to be your child's pen pal, and encourage a weekly exchange of letters, postcards, or e-mails. Keep up the reading rituals. Even if everything else changes during the summer, keep up the reading routines already in place at your house. Read with your kids every day — whether it's just before bedtime or under a shady tree on a lazy afternoon. And don't forget to take a book to the beach! Just brush the sand off the pages! Preparing Kids for Hurricanes Hurricane season is already gearing up as we kept an eye on Elsa. Here are some tips from KidsHealth® on how to help prepare your family and help your kids deal with the stress and emotions of an impending and possible storm. ________________________________________ Hurricanes can be scary — for grown-ups and kids alike. Kids learn how to respond to situations based on the behaviors and attitudes of those around them. Here are some tips to help them — and you — be ready during hurricane season.
Talk About Hurricanes Kids might be confused about what a hurricane is, so use simple age-appropriate descriptions of what to expect if one is coming your way. For a younger child, you might say, “A hurricane is a tropical storm with very strong winds and lots of rain, lightning, and thunder.” It’s also important to tell kids that grown-ups will do their best to keep them safe. Try to Remain Calm Yourself Kids can easily sense the emotions of those around them. When a parent seems overly upset or worried, this can make a child’s own fears or worries worse. Let Kids Help With Pre-storm Preparations Keeping them busy can help keep kids’ minds off of their worries. Helping prepare in ageappropriate ways also can increase a child’s sense of control over the situation. To involve your kids: Prepare a family disaster emergency kit. Kids can help collect canned goods and get flashlights ready. Have your kids help bring outdoor items inside. Discuss your family’s disaster plan together. Will you need to evacuate — and what would that look like? Which grown-ups will do what? This
22 July 2021| PB Parenting |
will help kids know what to expect. During the Storm Let kids pick a few comfort items, nonelectronic games, and toys in case of power outages. Try to keep as normal a routine as possible. This can help children feel calm and safe. Encourage kids to talk about their feelings or thoughts about what’s happening. Some kids might prefer not to talk right away — and that’s OK too. Spend time together and let them know that you’re there when they’re ready. After the Storm Monitor media exposure. There can be “too much coverage” leading up to and especially after a hurricane hits. These images might be
too much for young eyes and sensitive hearts. Let children help with clean-up. Pay attention to signs of stress, including nightmares, regressive behavior/acting younger than their age, and extra clinginess. These are common in children who’ve gone through a traumatic event. If you see any of these signs, talk to your doctor and know that trained counselors can help. © 1995-2021. The Nemours Foundation/ KidsHealth®. Reprinted with permission.
