Beat the Heat Guide
Letter From The Publisher
July Greetings,
I feel like school just ended, but I blinked, and we are almost halfway through summer! We have just over a month before heading back to school. I hope you have been enjoying the summertime. My kids have been having a great summer at summer camp, and my oldest is volunteering. But the temperatures are just starting to heat up!
In our 13th annual Beat the Heat issue, we have fun ways to stay cool. Inside, you'll find our yearly guide, tips, and events. We are working hard at staying cool over the next two to three months when temperatures can get over 90 degrees and feel like 100!
With the kids spending more time at home, it's easy for the house to become a mess. In South Florida, the summer means kids are out of school and ready to play, but the weather often keeps them indoors, leading to chaos and clutter. To keep them occupied, happy, and off their devices, Amy Bergman, a professional organizer, shares practical, mess-free ideas and easy solutions to keep your home tidy this summer as we all try to beat the heat indoors.
As we approach the end of summer, I encourage you to make the most of these last few weeks. Stay cool, have fun, and create lasting memories before the Back to School prep begins!
Happy Parenting,

10 Ways To Keep Cool When It’s Hot
Wow it is hot out! It is hard to keep your cool in South Florida when temperatures reach the mid 90s for the next few months. It is important to stay cool not only for your comfort but your safety. Dangerously high temperatures can result in heat-related illnesses ranging from heat cramps to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Signs of heat exhaustion include:
• Heavy sweating
• Cold, pale, and clammy skin
• Fast, weak pulse
• Nausea or vomiting
• Muscle cramps
• Tiredness or weakness
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Fainting (passing out)
If you think you or someone is suffering from heat exhuastion move to a cool place, loosen your clothes, put cool, wet cloths on your body or take a cool bath and sip water. Get medical help right away if: You are throwing up, your symptoms get worse or your symptoms last longer than 1 hour.
Signs of heat stroke include:
• High body temperature (103°F or higher)
• Hot, red, dry, or damp skin
• Fast, strong pulse
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Confusion
• Losing consciousness (passing out)
If you think you or someone is having a heat stroke Call 911 right away-heat stroke is a medical emergency, move the person to a cooler place, help lower the person’s temperature with cool cloths or a cool bath and do not give the person anything to drink.
The following tips can help you keep cool all summer long.
1. Beat the sun and heat with an early morning or evening activity or workout.
2. Try to stay in the shade when outdoors during peak sunlight.
3. Wear loose-fitting clothing, preferably of a light color. Also cotton clothing will keep you cooler than many synthetics.
4. Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator for a quick refreshing spray to your face after being outdoors or take it on the go with you!
5. Fans can help circulate air and make you feel cooler even in an air-conditioned house.
6. Try storing lotions or cosmetic toners in the refrigerator to use on hot, overtired feet.
7. Keep plastic bottles of water in the freezer; grab one when you’re ready to go outside. As the ice melts, you’ll have a supply of cold water with you.
8. Take frequent baths or showers with cool or tepid water.
Fall classes for all levels beginning August 19
9. Combat dehydration by drinking plenty of water along with sports drinks or other sources of electrolytes. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration.
10. Instead of hot foods, try lighter summer fare including frequent small meals or snacks containing cold fruit or low fat dairy products. As an added benefit, you won’t have to cook next to a hot stove.
Finally, use common sense. If the heat is intolerable, stay indoors when you can and avoid activities in direct sunlight or on hot asphalt surfaces. Pay special attention to the elderly, infants, and anyone with a chronic illness, as they may dehydrate easily and be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Don’t forget that pets also need protection from dehydration and heatrelated illnesses too. For more information on what to do in extreme heat go to https://www. cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/warning.html.

BY AMY BERGMAN
Here in South Florida summertime means the kids are out of school and ready to play but the weather is often not conducive to outdoor fun. This means that there’s a whole lot of time when they end up playing inside leading to chaos inside our homes and definitely a lot of clutter. So, in an effort to keep the kiddos occupied, happy and off their devices while inside the home, I have collected some of my best strategizes to achieve these goals without making your home a destruction zone by the end of August. Below are some mess free ideas and easy solutions to keeping your home tidy this summer as we all try to beat the heat indoors.
1. Setup activity zones in your home. By establishing WHERE things can/should happen, you can more easily maintain the space. For example, if all craft projects will happen in the dining room this
summer, then no crafting related items should be found in the kitchen, family room or in a bedroom. Here are some mess free options to keep the cleanup to a minimum. This is also an opportunity to set up boundaries for your home, for example, if you don’t want any crafting or toys in the family room, then establish that area as a space for reading or games only.
2.Rotate your toys, games and puzzles. Each week set out a few “new” items to keep them interested. Don’t put out everything at one time. For older kids, give them more long-term projects and activities to occupy their time that may also require them to learn new skills, like building a model or crocheting a blanket. Here’s a great how to video for crocheting for kids.
3.Create a reward system for keeping the house tidy. Assign cleanup tasks and use a chart or even fake coins to give as positive reinforcement which can then be “cashed in” for prizes or a weekly trip the Dollar Store. Here are some FREE printable reward charts.
4. Ask neighbors or friends with kids of similar age to take turns hosting weekly playdates to give yourself (and your house) a break. Nervous about hosting? Here are some tips for hosting a playdate in your home.
5.Establish a weekly “Family Movie Night” or a daily “Story/Reading Time” as a builtin chill time for everyone. Here’s a movie watchlist.
I hope these tips give you some ideas on how to keep your home tidy this summer while keeping your kids occupied and happy. But the reality is, there is a level of chaos that comes with being couped up indoors. This is when we all need to give ourselves a little grace and realize that the summer is the time when everything may not always be in its place. August will come soon enough and then we can all gear up for a back-to-school reset, and I will be here to make it Amyzing!
XOXO,Amy

TRAVELS & Places to go
Nearly 71 Million People Expected to Travel over July 4th Week
This year’s extended Independence Day forecast exceeds pre-pandemic numbers, sets new record
AAA projects 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday travel period*. For the first time, AAA looked at the entire July 4th week, plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after the holiday. This year’s projected number of travelers for that time period is a 5% increase compared to 2023 and an 8% increase over 2019.
“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”
AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week – that’s an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses 2019 when 55.3 million people traveled by car over
July 4th week. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are the cities displaying the highest rental demand during the holiday week. The busiest pick-up days are projected to be Friday, June 28, Saturday, June 29, and Wednesday, July 3.
Gas prices are lower than last year when the national average was $3.53. Pump prices will likely continue going down leading up to Independence Day. At that point, they will likely level off and remain relatively stable until after Labor Day, similar to last year. An important caveat is hurricane season – underway now – which could affect gas prices should a storm negatively impact Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers.
The number of air travelers is also expected to set a new record. AAA projects 5.74 million people will fly to their July 4th destinations. That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019. AAA booking data shows domestic
airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, and the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800. Airports will be packed throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking ahead of time, and traveling with carry-on luggage versus checked bags to save time and money.
This July 4th week, travelers are cooling off in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska – and by the ocean! Seattle, Vancouver, and Anchorage are top destinations because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Beaches in South Florida, Honolulu, Punta Cana, and Barcelona are in high demand. Historical sites in European cities like London, Rome, Dublin, Paris, and Athens are also popular. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.
DOMESTIC: Seattle, WA, Orlando, FL, Anchorage, AK, Honolulu, HI, Miami, FL, New York, NY, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Las Vegas, NV, Denver, CO, Anaheim/Los Angeles, CA
INTERNATIONAL: Vancouver, BC, Canada, London, England, Rome, Italy, Dublin, Ireland Paris, France, Calgary, AB, Canada, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic Athens, Greece Barcelona, Spain
AAA provides roadside assistance, travel, discounts, financial and insurance services to enhance the life journey of 64 million members across North America, including 57 million in the United States To learn more about all AAA has to offer or to become a member, visit AAA.com.
