Letter From The Publisher
Greetings, Wow! Where did summer go? I can’t believe that back to school will be here so quick! This year is a bittersweet year as my oldest is entering 5th grade and the last year of elementary school. I am not sure if I am ready for middle school yet. Good thing I have a year to mentally prepare myself. If you aren’t in back to school mode or have a younger one still at home then come by and see PB Parenting on Wednesday, August 21st from 9 AM - 12 PM at Stroller Daze at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. This event is specially geared towards children 5 and under and will have plenty of entertainment and activities (50% off adult admission and children 12 and under are free). Stop by our table and register to win some amazing raffle prizes including an Infantino Grow-With-Me 4-in-1 Convertible High Chair and a family four pack of Disney on Ice Tickets. I would love to see your cute babies and toddlers as mine are so big! Check out our annual School Spotlight for great information about local private schools, charter schools and preschools. Finally, on page 12 you’ll find our School Calendar. The first day of school is Monday, August 12th. Good luck moms and dads (and students too!) with the return to school! It is coming up quick! Happy Parenting,

A Backto-School Checklist for Your Child’s Health BY: DR. LOU ROMIG Preparing for your children to go to school in the fall means more than buying new • clothes and school supplies. Here’s a checklist of a few things that will help your child stay healthy and happy during the school year. • Obtain school and sports physicals and update vaccinations as needed. • If your child takes medication every day, make sure you have an adequate supply. If your child takes prescription medications only when necessary (such as allergy medications), make sure you have it at home, so your child doesn’t need to wait for a doctor’s appointment to get the medication when it’s needed. • Start moving your child’s sleep and wake times to their school year hours • 1-2 weeks ahead of time. Cutting off all screen time at least one hour before bed will help your child fall asleep faster. Cell phones should be turned off at night. • Emphasize to your child the • importance of hand washing/ sanitizing as a way to help keep from getting sick, and to let you or a teacher know if they’re not feeling well. • Try to ensure that your child gets a

healthy breakfast on school days. If your child has food or other allergies and is old enough to understand their allergy, make sure they know what to avoid. If your child has had or may have anaphylaxis (a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction) and has been prescribed an epinephrine autoinjector, make sure they have it with them or that it’s kept in the school office or clinic. Make appropriate arrangements with the school to have medications like epinephrine (“Epi-Pen”) and albuterol inhalers available for your child and/ or staff to use. Ask if there’s always someone at school who knows how to use an Epi-Pen. Make sure your child’s school has all appropriate emergency contact information as well as your child’s medical information. Let them know which hospital you prefer your child to go to in an emergency. Remind your children about the dangers of heat and dehydration. Athletes should not be compelled to overexert themselves in the late summer and fall heat. Talk to your school’s coaches and/or athletic

trainers about their policies about exertion in the heat and access to adequate hydration during activities. Make sure middle and high school Athletic/PE Departments have an automated external defibrillator (AED). Speak with your child about their knowledge about bullying and ask if they’ve ever been bullied. Know your school’s policies on bullying. Ask your child if they have any concerns or fears about starting school. Let them know you hear them and are always willing to listen and help when you can.

Reduce First Day Jitters BY SARAH LYONS
As kids pack up their new backpacks, sharpen their pencils, and try on their new fall clothes, most start to get excited about the first day of school. While the beginning of the school year is an exciting time and represents a new start, some kids may feel anxious about the unknown. A new teacher, new classmates, or a new school can cause a lot of stress and anxiety. Using some simple strategies, parents can help prepare their children for the first day and ease their concerns.
her transportation and daily schedule at school. If the child has specific worries, try to address when that will happen during day. For some, role playing can help them feel more comfortable. Begin the day as you would a typical school morning. Prepare breakfast, get dressed, and pack bags as if you are going to school. Act out the child’s day and “play school”. Take turns being the teacher. Making it a game can make the child more comfortable when the real day approaches.
Start with the basics - When children are well rested and have full tummies, they are better prepared for a busy day. Start adjusting bedtime and wake up times a week or more in advance so the child has time to adjust to the new school routine. A healthy and filling breakfast starts children off on the right foot. When these needs are met, parents and kids can work together to tackle school anxiety.
Focus on the positive - Often parents are just as anxious about their child going off to school as the student. Focus on the positive when you talk to your child about school. Make it exciting by having your child pick out a new backpack, school supplies, and an outfit for the first day. Encourage older siblings to help by talking about the fun things they will experience at school. Ask your child what they are excited about. Watch your own anxiety on the first day and try to behave in a calm and positive way.
Talk it through - Allow your child to talk about his feelings. Help him list the specific things that he is worrying about. Instead of brushing aside worry, let him know it is natural to be nervous and you will help him adjust to a new school. Try reading some age appropriate children’s books about the first day of school jitters. Discuss the plan - Walk your child through what she can expect on the first day. Discuss
12 August 2019 | PB Parenting |
Take a tour - If the school has a “Meet the Teacher” night, take advantage of this time to show the child the classroom, become familiar with the surroundings, and introduce them to the teacher. This will allow the child to feel more comfortable in their surroundings on the first day. Encourage friendships - When a child
recognizes a friendly face in the classroom, it can make them feel much more at ease. Encourage your child to meet other children in the neighborhood that will be in the same class. Host a play date or a class picnic for the kids. Discuss with teacher - If anxiety persists after the first few days of school, contact the teacher and share your concerns. She may have some suggestions on how to deal with student’s anxiety and will be aware of the situation. Often times, a teacher who knows a child is dealing with anxiety will give them extra support in the classroom. Reward for bravery - The first day of school can be a stressful time, reward your child for their bravery with a small toy, a special dessert, or a trip to their favorite park. It takes a lot of courage to try something new and it should be recognized. Sarah Lyons, mom to six children, loves all that goes along with a new school year. This year she will send her daughter off to kindergarten and we are experiencing a little anxiety and a lot of excitement.
