Preparing Your Child for a Healthy School Year Preparing Your Child for a Healthy School Year

Summer’s coming to an end and it’s time to prepare to send our kids back to school. As you’re getting supplies and new school clothes, it’s also important to prepare your child to go back to school healthy and to stay healthy!

According to the CDC, children get 8 to 12 colds or other viral illnesses each school year. To help keep your child(ren) healthy and avoid disruption in your routines Dr. Romig, Medical Director for After Hours Pediatrics Urgent Care, has 4 easy tips for a healthy start to the school year.

1. Hand washing

To help protect children from getting sick and subsequently bringing germs home, encourage your children to wash their hands frequently and give older children small bottles of hand sanitizer to use at school encourage frequent hand washing.

Talk to your doctor about when it’s safe to keep your child home and observe them when they’re sick and when it’s wise to have your child evaluated urgently.

2. Adequate sleep

Children need sleep to prepare their bodies to

expend the energy they need for their activities in and out of school. Children who are sleep deprived may fall asleep in class, have trouble paying attention, make poor decisions about risky behaviors and be very moody.

Toddlers and preschoolers need 10-12 hours of sleep every day, while school-aged kids need 10-11 hours and teens need 8-9 hours. Studies show that many children don’t get adequate sleep, especially during the school year. This issue has played a role in some school systems’ decisions to move school start times to later in the morning to allow kids to be better-rested.

Over the last several weeks before school starts, gradually move children’s bed and wake-up times to match their school hours. Keeping late hours until the night before school starts will make it much harder for your child to adjust to the new schedule.

Restrict your child from TV, computer and phone use for at least an hour, preferably two, before bedtime, as the light spectrum projected by these screens can make the brain more active and

interfere with falling asleep. Try to reinforce to children that all cell phone use must stop during rest hours.

3. Nutrition & hydration

Children also need adequate nutrition and hydration to power their bodies and brains. Whether it’s a sit-down meal or on-the-go, try to make sure your children have a nutritious breakfast that includes protein for extra energy that will keep them going until lunch.

Teach children about the building blocks of a nutritious diet and give them guidance about choosing the proper foods for lunch at school if they don’t take a healthy lunch with them. Encourage your children to drink as much water as they can at school.

4. Sports safety

If sports are on your child’s school agenda, talk to coaches about what precautions they take against the late summer and early fall Florida heat

Sensati al Su er at e Sch

and assure that children will have free access to water and/or electrolyte solutions to drink during practice and games.

Let your child know that if they get dizzy, have a headache, get very thirsty, are nauseated or have muscle cramps while exercising (in sports or PE), they should stop, tell the teacher or coach they’re not feeling well, get to a shaded area or into air conditioning, and drink fluids.

If your child will be engaging in contact sports, assure that coaches and athletic trainers are educated about traumatic brain injury and concussions and that the team has a protocol for dealing with athletes with possible head injuries.

Here’s wishing you and your family a healthy and happy school year!

Returning to school after the summer break can be exciting and challenging for children. As a parent, it's essential to prepare with the right supplies, mindset, and strategies to ensure your child has a smooth transition. Whether your child is returning to familiar hallways or starting fresh at a new school, helping them ease back into the school routine can set the tone for a successful year ahead. Here are some valuable tips to assist your child in managing anxieties and making the most of their educational journey.

Establish a Routine:

Start easing your child into a school routine a few days before school begins. Set regular bedtimes and wake-up times to adjust their sleep schedule and ensure they are well-rested.

Organize Supplies:

Make a list of necessary school supplies and prepare them in advance. Check out our comprehensive list on page 11 for useful items to have on hand, and be sure to review your child's specific school requirements. Having everything organized reduces first-day stress.

Goodbye Summer! 15 Back to School Transition Tips

Review and Preview:

Encourage your child to review some of their previous coursework to refresh their memory. Also, help them preview the upcoming subjects or topics they'll be studying to get a head start.

Talk About It:

If your child is feeling nervous or anxious, encourage them to talk about it with friends or family. It's common to have mixed feelings about going back to school, and talking can help alleviate some concerns.

Visit the School:

If your child is starting at a new school or transitioning to a higher grade, visit the campus before the first day. Many schools host open houses or meet the teachers days the week before. Familiarizing them with the environment can ease anxiety.

Set Goals:

Help your child set realistic and achievable goals for the upcoming school year. Clear objectives will give them a sense of direction and motivation.

Stay Positive:

Encourage your child to embrace the new school year with a positive attitude. Focus on the opportunities and experiences it will bring rather than dwelling on any negative aspects.

Connect with Friends:

Encourage your child to reconnect with old friends and make an effort to meet new people. Having a support system of friends can make the transition easier.

Time Management:

Teach your child practical time management skills as the school workload picks up. Use tools like planners or digital apps to keep track of assignments, deadlines, and extracurricular activities.

Stay Healthy:

Ensure your child maintains a balanced diet,

exercises regularly, and gets enough sleep. A healthy body and mind will make the transition smoother.

Communicate with Teachers:

Encourage your child to reach out to their teachers if they have any concerns or questions. Building a good relationship with their teachers can be beneficial throughout the school year.

Be Yourself:

Remind your child to embrace who they are and be confident in their abilities. They shouldn't feel pressured to conform to others' expectations; they should be their best version.

Manage Stress:

Help your child find healthy ways to cope with stress, such as meditation, hobbies, or spending time with friends. It's natural to feel stressed at times, but having coping strategies will help

them navigate through it.

Limit Screen Time:

Encourage your child to minimize excessive screen time and focus on activities that promote learning and personal growth.

Have Fun:

Finally, remind your child that school can be a fun and enriching experience. Encourage them to engage in extracurricular activities, explore their interests, and make the most of opportunities.

By following these tips, you'll help your child be better prepared for a smooth transition back to school. Remember that it's okay to take time to adjust, and with your support, things will fall into place.

Good luck in the new school year from PB Parenting!

Summer is almost over! Before you get the “Back to School scaries” I am here to help you be organized and prepared for BTS 2024. Last fall I shared with you my Back to School Action Plan in the August 2023 edition of PB Parenting magazine, in it I discussed lots of great ideas including the importance of creating a morning routine.

Now, I would like to share another secret with you. Your morning schedule is only as good as your EVENING schedule. And by evening schedule I don’t mean a long tedious list of things to do during the “witching hour”. I mean setting up some nonnegotiable bedtime tasks for you and your family to close out the day and set you all up for a productive day tomorrow.

First, decide what your family’s non-negotiable evening tasks will be---like leaving an empty sink and a clean kitchen, putting all electronics “to bed” (see the benefits of this in this article), packing up

backpacks, laying out outfits, or pre-making lunches for the next day. Whatever you decide, make sure they are obtainable and important to you and your family. This is NOT the time to include chores like vacuuming the rugs or cleaning the windows. These should be quick and easy things assigned to each person that will get everyone in bed on time and ready for the next day, thereby setting you up for a good morning.

When you have decided on the evening schedule tasks, here’s a productivity hack: use timers to make the prep time quick and painless. These tasks should be done quickly and timers make sure everyone has a reasonable amount of time to accomplish their tasks and stick to it. Keep in mind, any new schedule takes about two weeks to become a habit and routine, so give it time.

All of this evening prep will help mornings get off on the right foot. School mornings can be a hectic

time of day in most households and if you want to start your school days off with a minimum amount of stress, you will want to plan out a morning routine as well. Here’s where to start, ask yourself (and your family) these questions:

• What time will everyone get up? Who is responsible for making sure everyone is awake?

• Do you need a shower schedule?

• What’s the plan for breakfast?

• Will your kids lay out clothes the night before, or choose clothes in the morning?

• What after school activities are scheduled that day and what items do we need for them?

Start talking about this now, and start implementing it a little early so that the first day of school doesn’t fall apart before it begins. Be flexible, if it isn't working by week two, change it up! If your child has trouble getting moving in the morning or staying focused, consider a visual schedule or checklist for them to complete. Here are some FREE printables for you to use. These can help your child feel organized and more importantly, minimize arguments or frustration between you and your kids. Do you want even MORE Back to School organizing tips? Read more in this previous PB Parenting article. As always, I am here if you should need any help. Let’s make every morning and evening of BTS 2024 our best yet!

Create a Family-Friendly Grazing Board

A beautifully designed charcuterie board may feel more like a grown-up treat, but with the right ingredients, delicious grazing boards can provide fun and nutrition for the whole family.

No matter what you call it, charcuterie boards, grazing boards and snack platters are all basically the same thing. The boards make a trendy addition to an entertaining menu, but a platter or kidfriendly board can be equally pleasing. What you serve on a grazing board is entirely up to you. Most include a selection of meats and cheeses, and many incorporate nuts, crackers, dips and jams. Some also

incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables. Creating your own board means there really are no rules; you can add just about anything you want.

To build a successful board, keep these tips in mind:

Choose ingredients and elements that don’t require temperature control. The idea of a grazing board is that it sits out for a while. Avoid anything that needs refrigeration, heat or will lose its shape or flavor if it rests for an extended amount of time.

Select a surface large enough to hold a variety of food. It can be a simple cutting board or a cute platter. There’s no specific size requirement but err on the side of bigger; spacing out your goodies can be more attractive and less messy.

Use high-quality ingredients to ensure every bite is delicious and nutritious. While shopping, remember to look for the Produce for Kids and Healthy Family Project logos next to favorite items in the produce department, as adding these flavorful fruits and veggies to your cart can help make a difference in your community.

Build your board around a theme to add an extra element of fun. Use mini cookie cutters to make fun, kid-friendly shapes out of cheese and meats. Be mindful of colors; a rainbow platter is vibrant and appealing, and colorful fruits and veggies offer a strong mix of nutrients.

Remember it doesn’t have to be elaborate. Classic favorites are all you need. Even kid favorites like sections of mandarin oranges, carrot sticks and chocolate chips are fair game for a family-friendly board.
