Letter From The Publisher

Greetings, As we are wrapping up the Baby and Maternity issue, my associate publisher, Jen, and I worked an event called Stroller Daze at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. We met many moms with strollers, baby carriers or chasing after quick footed toddlers running to see the fish in the aquarium. We reminisced about when our kids were that little and we were chasing them around and how fun that age is. Enjoy the time as it goes fast! We appreciated you bringing all your cute babies by with their little bows, cute shoes and outfits! We also met a lot of grandparents at Stroller Daze! Many of them are out with the grandchildren or helping mom out by watching them! Make sure to give them some extra love on Grandparents Day on September 8. You can check out ways to Bond with Grandparents on page 20. One place we have frequented over the years and continue to visit is the pediatricians office! We have some tips this month on page 8 on how to find a good match! Now that we are a few weeks into the new school year and have settled into a school routine, check out our annual After School Enrichment Guide with some great ideas from music to dance to sports and the arts. You’ll find some fun and educational places that you can enroll in to take your children to after the school day has ended starting on page 24. Make sure to connect with us online for the lastest events and contests. We are on facebook and instagram at @pbparenting Happy Parenting,

Finding a Doctor for Your New Baby BY CHRISTA MELNYK HINES During your baby’s first year, you’re going to be spending quite a bit of time with your child’s healthcare provider. Take steps before your baby arrives to choose a doctor who you feel comfortable with and trust. When should you start the process? Anywhere between one and three months before your due date is an ideal time to start shopping around for a pediatrician or a family physician. Try not to wait until the last minute.

a particular physician. Here are the primary differences between the two types of physicians: A family practice doctor is trained to provide healthcare to individuals at all stages of life, from newborn to senior. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, family physicians train for three years in real-life clinical settings and are trained in all areas of medicine ranging from pediatrics and internal medicine to obstetrics. Physicians should be board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and licensed in the state in which they practice.

“Once you go to the hospital, there’s a lot going on. You’ll be seeing a lot of doctors. You’ll be going through labor. It’s not something you want to decide off-the-cuff,” says pediatrician Aaron Mayer, D.O. A pediatrician specializes specifically in childhood conditions, diseases and When you arrive at the hospital to deliver treatment for patients from newborn your baby, you’ll be asked who you’ve to age 18. Where to begin? “Honestly, I think consulting with friends and family is probably best. If your friends like their doctor, you are likely to find a good fit with them as well,” says Kallie Foss, M.D., FAAP. Make sure the recommended physicians are part of your health insurance network. Also check out area hospital websites, which often feature doctors who are nearby and accepting new patients. Schedule a prenatal visit. Once you’ve got a list of two or three physicians, call and schedule a prenatal visit to help you get a feel for their personality and office environment. While some physicians may prefer to do a phone consultation, a face-to-face appointment can help you get a sense of the office and nursing staff. Consider if they are courteous, warm and helpful? What is the overall feel of the clinic? Is it kid-friendly, clean and welcoming?

“You don’t really know if the physician’s personality meshes with your family unless you speak with them in person,” Dr. Mayer says. “It’s important to do prenatal visits to see if the way they act, the way they treat you, and the environment of the clinic fits with what you want for your family.” Make a list of questions. Now that you have prenatal appointments lined up, consider what issues are most important to you. For example, you might ask: • Who will see my baby in the hospital? • How soon after we leave the hospital should we see you? • What is the schedule for well-child checks and immunizations? • What can I expect during well-child checks? • How long are the typical wait times at appointments? • How do you handle after-hours calls? • Which urgent care do you recommend? • What’s your availability for last minute

So which direction do you want to go - classic names like Mary or James or perhaps a newer unique trendy name or one with alternative spelling? So what names have been popular so far for 2019? Here are some lists according to Names.org, who tracks names based on the most recent data on births from the Social Security Administration plus several previous years to account for trends combined with user interest on Names.org. On Names.org, you can spot some names that were very popular in the past, but have recently fallen from favor by looking for names that have a high “trendiness” score that have been around for a very long time. Examples include Mark and Lisa. So far names that were popular in 2018 are still holding their position on the list. 5 Ways Parents Can Help Kids Be Themselves As a parent, it’s so exciting to see your children grow and develop their own unique personalities and interests. While children are young and exploring the world around them, parents are always looking for ways to encourage their children’s growth, and to support them in finding activities that inspire kids and help them express their individual differences. What are the most positive ways to influence kids? By letting them be themselves and cheering them on, all the way. 1. Let kids choose their activities: These days the choices for classes and activities can be overwhelming, so pick a reasonable number of choices for your children, but make sure they represent a variety of interests, from the arts, science and math, sports and more - and let them choose what interests them the most. If you need to narrow down their choices, take your kids to a library or bookstore, explain where to find what types of books, and see what they gravitate toward. What kinds of books intrigue them? This will keep the choices to a manageable level. Then allow your children to sample from the pursuits that interest them, and see what sticks.

Encourage their curiosity. Help them find kid-friendly books and websites on the subjects they like. Learn about the topic yourself, so you can help your children explore it further. 3. Help kids express themselves through their room decor: Next time their bedroom needs a refresh, let children help pick out the color and design scheme - within reason. Allowing children to choose pictures to display or to arrange a shelf of treasures and knickknacks also lets them express their interests and personal style. The upside? They may be more likely to keep a room clean if they helped to decorate it!

4. Allow kids to pick their own clothing styles: There’s no better way to help children express their own personal style than allowing them choices about what they wear. Within an acceptable budget - which can also be a learning experience - go to your favorite store and let your children choose some of their clothing, within guidelines you set ahead of time. Again, if the options are overwhelming, limit them, but still allow a choice. Ask, “Which one of these three shirts do you like best?” 2. Encourage kids to follow their interests Shopping for kid-focused clothing brands Once your kids express an interest in like OshKosh B’gosh means you know that something, encourage the pursuit, even if it’s whatever they choose will be a perfect something you didn’t expect. Your children balance of quality, value, fashion and kidmay choose an interest that doesn’t easily friendly style. lend itself to after-school clubs or classes 5. Support kids in their efforts to help in your area. So how can you help them? others: The internet is full of stories about

kids who love to help others, from a lemonade stand raising funds for a good cause to kids doing good deeds to help out a neighbor or friend. Kids love to make a difference, and you can support their efforts as well as acting as a role model by making a difference, too. Since 2014, parents have helped the OshKosh Jeanius Campaign raise $2.1 million to help kids and classrooms, via DonorsChoose.org and Delivering Good. Through Sept. 19, you can buy an extra pair of jeans in-store or make a cash donation in-store or online, and OshKosh B’gosh will match each pair of denim with an article of clothing, and will match all cash donations up to $50,000. Encouraging your kids to be kind, be confident and most importantly, to be themselves can be the most rewarding part of parenting. Visit Oshkosh.com for great deals on kids’ clothing, and more information about the B’gosh Jeanius Campaign. (BPT)

Sunday Sept. 8 is Grandparents Day

Bonding With Grandparents If you’ve ever turned to your parents or your partner’s parents for help and support with child-rearing, you know how wonderful grandparents can be. Although physical distance and parenting differences can come between grandparents, their kids, and their grandchildren, encouraging a close relationship can benefit everyone involved. Bonding Benefits Establishing a bond with grandparents is great for kids in many ways. Grandparents can be positive role models and influences, and they can provide a sense of cultural heritage and family history. Grandparents provide their grandkids with love, have their best interests at heart, and can make them feel safe. Grandparents also encourage a child’s healthy development. Overnight trips to Grandma’s house, for example, may be less traumatic than sleepovers with peers and can help kids develop independence. Another benefit — grandparents may have lots of time to spend playing with and reading to kids. Such dedicated attention only improves a child’s developmental and learning skills. Tips for Staying in Touch In today’s world, though, families may be scattered across the country, and

20 September 2019 | PB Parenting |

jam-packed school and work schedules may interfere with regular time with grandparents. Despite physical distance or busy schedules, you can encourage your kids to develop a closer bond with their grandparents. Try these tips: • Visit often. If your child’s grandparents live nearby, make an effort to save time in your busy schedule for regular visits. Encourage grandparents to visit your home, too. Plan regular trips to see out-of-town grandmas and grandpas. Even if visits are infrequent, anticipating and planning the next trip can help your child regard that time as special. • Stay in touch with technology. Use the telephone, email, Skype, etc., to talk, write, and send pictures and sound files of your kids to grandparents. If they don’t own a computer, send videos of the kids in action. Or have a grandparent record a reading of a favorite story and play it for your child at bedtime. • Say cheese. Post snapshots of grandparents in your home and point them out to your kids often. Or keep family pictures in a special photo album and page through it while naming the family members.

Origins of Grandparents Day Congress passed the legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents’ Day and, on August 3, 1978, then-President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation. Marian McQuade started to campaign for Grandparents Day in the early 1970s. Her idea was for the holiday to be an incentive for families to visit with elderly family members living in nursing homes. Her idea, however, quickly grew to encompass much more. As she worked with politicians and others, she emphasized the wisdom and family history grandparents can offer their grandchildren and other family members. The month of September was chosen for Grandparents Day as a symbol of the “autumn years” of life. It also coincides with the start of school, giving children the perfect opportunity to interview their grandparents for school reports.

• Mail call. Kids love receiving mail, be it an e-mail or a letter in the mailbox. Encourage communication by having your child send e-mail — both kids and grandparents will anticipate the regular communication. Or, if you prefer the old-fashioned way, send grandparents a box of stationery and postcards and some stamps and ask them to write regularly. • Pass it on. Many grandparents have hobbies or special skills — such as knitting, woodworking, or cooking — that they’d love to pass on to their grandkids. Give your kids the time and tools needed to learn these skills from their grandparents. Chart a family tree. Both younger and older kids enjoy learning about their ancestors and relatives. Encourage grandparents to share stories of their families. You can even provide paper and drawing supplies (or geneology software) so they can chart the family tree.

Safety Away From Home Whether grandparents live nearby or you’re planning to visit, don’t forget to make safety a priority. Grandparents may not be used to having young kids in the house, and household dangers could mean trips to the emergency room. Use a household safety checklist and work with the grandparents to childproof the home, making sure that dangerous items — such as cleaning products, medicines, razors, and knives — are out of reach or locked in a cabinet. Consider walking through the home with the grandparents to look for any potential safety hazards. They may not realize that small or breakable items are a choking or safety risk. Taking these precautions ahead of time can free kids and grandparents to make the most of their special time together. © 1995- 2019. The Nemours Foundation/ KidsHealth®. Reprinted with permission.
