Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Halloween and Fall are one of my favorite times of the year. I am trying not to let COVID-19 dampen my holiday spirit! I have my decorations up, and pumpkins are decorating my dining room table. This year will be very tricky to celebrate Halloween like we use to, but we will certainly try and have some fun! Check out page 6 for some ways to celebrate Halloween. We have divided activities by Low, Medium, and High Risk. If you are going to participate in Trick or Treating, check out page 16 for ways to do it as safely as possible and tips if you are going to set up a station at your home. Halloween is not canceled! It will just be different, and we are determined to dress up in costume and have some fun this Halloween season! (Safely, of course!) Usually, our October issue is PACKED full of events. This October, it is on the quiet side, but we did find a few fun things to do. Join Kids Need More Art and paint a pumpkin during one of their many paint parties. Also, have you seen the baby tiger cubs at the zoo? They are so cute and won’t stay little for long. The weather is perfect for walking around the zoo. We are going to try to take advantage of the hopefully cooler weather that is coming. Enjoy the outside! Thank you to all the expectant and new parents that join us virtually for our first annual Virtual Baby Shower last month. We had a great time, and some lucky parents won fantastic raffle prizes, including a Chicco Car Seat and Boppy Baby Carrier. Thank you to the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County and Shalom Palm Beach Baby for sponsoring our event and providing a Shalom Baby Gift Basket. We can’t wait to do it again! Happy Parenting,

Making the Most of Halloween During Covid-19 BY MELANY TROLLER, M.ED. Covid-19 is not just a bunch of “hocus pocus”, but that doesn’t mean Halloween can’t be fun this year! The CDC has released guidelines and suggestions on ways to celebrate Halloween at lowrisk, medium-risk, and high-risk. Using those guidelines you can choose what is best for your family and still have a “spooktacularly” good time!
Low-Risk, High Fun! Devious Decorating Decorating your house with the kids is low-risk and tons of fun! Whether you

choose to decorate inside, outside, or both, you can get into the spooky spirit of Halloween and transform the everyday into a monstrous good time. Grocery stores often sell pumpkins that you can purchase to decorate, making it convenient to get your ghoulish gourd! Devilish Disguises Set up a virtual costume party with friends from across town or even across the world! There are a variety of applications that allow for virtual group meet ups! You can still “see” each other and have the fun factor without the worry. Set up contests, dancing, or trivia! Ghostly Apparitions There are so many fun Halloween movies to choose from! Pair a Halloween movie viewing with spooky treats. Another fun opportunity for kids is to have a costume parade route planned out in the neighborhood, not necessarily at any specific homes, with candy stations sprinkled throughout (and hand sanitizer!). lollipops by wrapping lollipops in white tissue! The ideas are endless and the movies are frightfully fun!

Spooky Stroll Many this year are throwing themselves into decorating (guilty as charged!). Taking a spooky yet socially-distanced stroll through your neighborhood to check out other decorations is a medium-risk fun way to get into the spirit of Halloween (and to make it low-risk drive instead of walk).

the risk of crowds gathering and being exposed to more individuals you may not know. Wearing a protective mask is a must for this. Traditional Trunk-or-Treating Traditional trunk-or-treating involves trickor-treating out of the, typically, decorated trunks of cars. This also has the risk of crowds gathering and being exposed to more individuals you may not know. Don’t forget to wear a mask and bring hand sanitizer with you. Attending a crowded, indoor costume party If you choose to attend an indoor costume party with your kids, do not forgo your masks! Outdoor parties are preferable, but if you are indoors keep your mask on and wash your hands regularly. PB Parenting are not safety experts. REAL BODIES: THE EXHIBITION SHOWCASES & EXPLORES HUMAN ANATOMY South Florida Science Center and Aquarium Announces Blockbuster Exhibit No bones about it! The South Florida Science Center is announcing the fall blockbuster exhibit, Real Bodies: The Exhibition presented by the Stiles-Nicholson Foundation. Now open, the exhibit will be on display until April 11, 2021. Appropriate for all ages, Real Bodies goes beyond skin deep to reveal the mysteries of human anatomy, exploring the body through physiology, culture and emotion. Visitors will tour real, preserved human bodies, digging deeper into what it means to be alive. This powerful exhibition, produced by Imagine Exhibitions, Inc., displays 20 real, perfectly preserved human bodies and more than 200 anatomical specimens throughout 11 galleries. Each of the specimens featured in Real Bodies has been carefully and respectfully preserved by a team of experts using a scientific method known as polymer preservation, or plastination. This revolutionary process uses liquid silicon rubber to prevent the natural process of decaying.

The exhibition pushes boundaries while blending art, science and emotion. When visitors explore different systems of the body, they will see the deeper connection between breathing, hunger, heart rhythm, love, motion and thought that makes each person unique. “We are thrilled to bring Real Bodies to Palm Beach County,” said Kate Arrizza, Science Center President and CEO. “We know our guests will love seeing the science beneath the skin and learning about human evolution through time. This is a rare opportunity to see the human body from the inside, which we hope will spark an interest in children to seek careers in science and medicine.” The exhibition will also feature a new COVID-19 component, encouraging visitors to learn more about the pandemic’s impact on the human body. Designed by Imagine Exhibitions, Inc. in consultation with emergency medicine physicians and epidemiologists with experience in emerging infectious disease preparedness, this new content showcases the latest
science-based information about the novel coronavirus. To continue with the theme of the historical, cultural and emotional context of the human body, the exhibit addresses efforts related to treating COVID-19 as well as the effects of the pandemic on human health and the healthcare system, including the challenges workers are facing in treating and preventing the virus. Interesting facts about how it affects each of the different body systems—from respiration to digestion to circulation—and other related topics will be found throughout the exhibition. Social distancing floor decals will continue the education as will a short film that illustrates the journey of the virus inside the human body. Visitors will also experience a dramatic display of dozens of 3-D printed virus models as part of the exhibition. “The human body is a magnificent machine capable of wonderful things, and the exhibition will showcase how amazing anatomy is,” said Kate Arrizza, President and CEO of the Science Center. “The new COVID-19 component is an excellent and timely resource that adds value to the educational impact.” “I am excited to share with the public the amazing work that our team collaborated on to create and enhance the exhibition in an effort to answer everyday questions about COVID-19,” said CEO of Imagine Exhibitions Tom Zaller. “Our goal is to share with people the current findings about how this new virus affects the different systems of the body in an easy to digest form. The hope is that we all come out of the exhibition knowing a little more than when we went in.”
conservation-themed Mini Golf Course and quarter mile long outdoor science trail. The newest addition includes a $2.5 million permanent exhibit, “Journey Through the Human Brain” and features the most advanced neuroscience research and technology in the world. Visit the new Tiger Cubs at the Palm Beach Zoo! The three Malayan tiger cubs born at Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society will be prowling and playing in their tropical tiger habitat each day with their mom, Api. The cubs are now just over three months old and ready to explore. The tigers have been living in a specialized behind-the-scenes area of the habitat specifically designed for a growing family including comfortable dens, outside yards and cameras for keeping a close eye on them since their birth on May 12. During that time, they have gained their eyesight (tiger cubs are born blind), bonded with mom and each other, grown in size and independence. “We are so excited for the community to experience these rare Malayan tiger cubs in the habitat that was designed for a tiger family,” said Palm Beach Zoo president & CEO Margo McKnight. “The cubs are a

continuation of the critically endangered Malayan tiger subspecies. Their genetics represent important diversity within the global zoo community while we work to ensure the survival of their wild cousins facing habitat destruction and illegal hunting.” “We are so proud of the way Api has provided for all the cubs’ needs. Now they are ready to venture out into the habitat, where they will experience a waterfall, running stream, bathing pool, banyan trees, bamboo and palms. It is where they will grow and learn to be tigers in a natural environment,” said carnivore supervisor Sherry Currens. The three cubs and Api will all live together with their bonding and playtime on full display. Visitors will get a front row view of all the action when they visit the Asia area of Palm Beach Zoo. Tigers are primarily solitary animals except when

females are raising cubs. Proud father Kadar will be close by but not in the habitat with mom and the cubs. The tigers will be in the habitat while Palm Beach Zoo is open each day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, unless there is inclement weather. The Zoo offers annual memberships for individuals and families. Members get the benefit of frequently visiting and watching the cubs grow into adult tigers over the next year. For more information go to www.palmbeachzoo. org. JUMP! JUMP! JUMP! Safety Steps for Spooky Fun Trick or Treat Safety During COVID-19 Traditional family activities like trickor-treating create fun moments and memories, but the effects of COVID-19 on this Halloween will bring about change for the spooky excitement. You can still ensure a special night for your little ones and all the ghouls, goblins and ghosts in your neighborhood by following safety measures aimed at keeping everyone healthy on All Hallows’ Eve. Consider these tips for safe trick-ortreating from the experts at the National Safety Council and leading candy maker, Mars Wrigley. Before Halloween • Buy individually wrapped candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters. Create signs encouraging trickor-treaters to stay 6 feet apart and display them in your yard. Don’t hand out treats if you are not feeling well. Consider socially distanced options such as “trunk-or-treating,” during which prepackaged goodies are handed out, or a virtual costume parade.
Alternately, you can use a tool like Mars Wrigley’s “TREAT TOWN™,” an app-based digital experience for families to virtually trick-or-treat for real candy. It offers Halloween fans of all ages the ability to create personalized spooky avatars, customized decorations for your in-app
