Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Happy Holidays! It is crazy that another holiday season is upon us again! With three kids, it is never too early for me to start shopping. Plus with all the adults on my list it starts to add up fast! I have been shopping lately and trying to avoid toys! Toy Clutter!!! I think all of us moms fight it and it seems to overrun our lives! I recently moved and tried to downsize their collection of toys and books. I think I need to make another pass using the tips on page 18. After de-cluttering, I need to not add more back to the pile again! Check out our annual Ultimate List of 100+ Non-Toy Gift Ideas for some inspiration on gifts you can give without adding to the toy box! But here I am skipping over Thanksgiving, let’s not forget our first holiday of the season! Being Thankful is something we should practice daily. Check out page 12 for tips for all ages (adults too!). One of things I am very thankful for are all of my friends. I don’t have family nearby and it is a challenge to travel to them during the holiday season. Over the years I have been down here in South Florida, I have made friends who are like family to me. So this Thanksgiving, I will be hosting my friends that, like me, don’t have family in the area for a “Friendsgiving” of sort. You can still throw a Friendsgiving party too! They are traditionally done after Thanksgiving and can be a fun, stress free, non-family gathering. Check out P. 22 on how to repurpose some of your leftovers and throw a little fun get together! Happy Parenting,

Ways to be Thankful • For Children (and Adults) of All Ages •

Thankful: adjective thank·ful : glad that something has happened or not happened, that something or someone exists, etc. : of, relating to, or expressing thanks Does it seem that children today don’t know the meaning of being thankful? We live in a consumer based, technology driven world and sometimes life flashes by so quick. We are in such a hurry that we often don’t have to stop and be polite and thankful for the world around us. Here are some tips on how to help your child show thankfulness and maybe a refresher for adults too! 1. Just say thank you: Practice using roleplay using good manners and saying “thank you” using stuffed animals and action figures.

12 November 2017 | PB Parenting |

2. Start a tradition: Not just for Thanksgiving Day but every week. At dinner time ask everyone to share at least one thing they are grateful for. 3. Be an example to younger children. You may not know it but they are watching you. Adults and older children can set a good example. 4. Hug Someone! Tell them that you are thankful for them being in your life. 5. Say thank-you with cookies. Prepare and deliver a homemade “thank you” to your local fire or police department, or your pediatrician’s or dentist’s office. 6. Help out without being asked. Make it a goal to do so once a day — and for any member of the family. 7. Thank a teacher or coach. Send a

handwritten note to let him know how much his efforts make a difference. 8. Volunteer a Saturday. Think food pantry or animal shelter, and try to make it a regular commitment. 9. Pay it forward in the drive-thru lane. Use your own money to pay for someone else’s meal. 10. Create a Thanksgiving scrapbook. Ask everyone to jot down their thoughts or contribute a photo on Thanksgiving day. Be sure to update it and add to it each year. 11. Encourage generosity. Together donate toys and clothes to the less fortunate. 12. Thank your children when they do something kind or good. Show thankfulness to the ones closest to you (spouse, friends, relatives) so they know gratitude isnt just for strangers.

this blockbuster exhibit. Visitors will also experience the importance of science in space and the future of space exploration. “This exhibit really makes you feel like you’re in the International Space Station, and it’s incredible,” said Lew Crampton, President and CEO of the Science Center. “You don’t have to be a space junkie to have fun, and there’s something for everyone, old and young.” The exhibit’s “Training Zone” features some of the challenges involved in becoming an astronaut. Visitors may try their hand at assembling nuts and bolts while wearing a space suit, complete a successful mission and even try to overcome G-forces. A “Rocket Launch” area stimulates blast-off, allowing guests to climb into

Toy Rotation:

Reduce Toy Clutter in Six Easy Steps BY SARAH LYONS

Toy clutter, it’s a problem all parents face. From the toddler years when blocks, push toys, and board books seem to be scattered down the hallway to the school age years where kids collect tiny Legos, matchbox cars, and Barbie dolls, clutter remains an ongoing issue. A toy rotation is one way to fight this problem... Step 1: Gather In the main play area, gather all the toys to the center of the room. You are making a bigger mess at first, but this will help you get organized in the long run. “It may be best to start this process when the kids are in bed or out of the house.” says Colorado Springs mom, Kara Thomas. The process may go quicker and smoother sans children. However if that isn’t an option, get the

18 November 2017 | PB Parenting |

kids involved and have them help bring toys to the center of the room. Step 2: Reduce Go through the pile you have gathered and throw away broken toys and items that have missing pieces. Take out any toys that are no longer age appropriate. Lastly, pick out toys that the children don’t play with. Jill Miller, Cedar Rapids, Iowa mom of two, says “We purge things every year for the annual neighborhood garage sale. It also gives us a little cash boost.” If your family is not up for the work that goes into selling items, consider donating them to a local charity or passing them along to a friend. Step 3: Sort Once you have reduced the amount

of toys, you should be left with age appropriate toys that your children enjoy. Now divide toys into three categories: thinking toys (puzzles, board games, shape sorters), pretend play (play food, dolls, blocks), and toys that encourage gross motor play (balls, push toys, cars). When you have the items sorted, there should be three piles, one for each category. Step 4: Divide Divide toys into three to four groups. Each group should have equal amounts of toys from the categories of thinking toys, pretend play, and gross motor toys. Place each group of toys into a large box and label it. Plastic tubs work well and can double as a toy box. Step 5: Store Once the toys are sorted and separated into three to four boxes, keep one out and put the remaining boxes in storage. Make sure you have easy access to the

stored boxes so you can rotate them frequently. Step 6: Rotate Decide how long to keep a box out for play. Some families switch weekly, while some switch every two to three weeks, and some may switch every month or longer. Choose a time that works for your family. When each box is out, take note of what toys are most popular and which items get ignored. As you are packing up the box, remove the items that didn’t get played with and donate or sell them.

By implementing a toy rotation system, you will be able to cut down on toy clutter in your living space because three-fourths of the toys will be in storage at any given time. In addition to a tidier home, there will also be less mess for kids to clean up and a better chance for all toys to be utilized.

Reduce Toy Clutter 1. Participate in garage sales or consignment sales “We sell toys they are done playing with.” says Olathe KS mom of five, Deanna Brown. 2. Pass them along to a friend or a family in need. 3. Donate to a local charity. 4. Give them to the church nursery or a preschool - many times an area church or preschool may be in need of used toys in good condition for their classrooms.

Be Sure to Check Out This Month’s Calendar Listings for Special Classes and Events!

5. Take them to grandma’s house - now the kids will have something to play with when they visit. 6. Try the Konmari Method using the book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. “I’m using Konmari Method on the toys and asking ‘Does this bring my kids joy or me joy?’ If not then I’m getting rid of it.”says Kassie, mom of three.

Give Your Little Bean a Cool Beans Birthday!

7. Throw out the “junk”. Get rid of cheap toys from fast food kid’s meals and carnivals. These toys rarely offer many hours of play time and often break easily. Sarah Lyons is a mother of six children and knows a lot about toy clutter. She writes from her home in suburban Kansas City.

Some quick tips for hosting a Friendsgiving

Friendsgiving is a holiday that is open to interpretation. It’s even a bit odd to slap a date on it—really, you can celebrate Friendsgiving whenever you like. Here are some tips for yours to run smoothly.

1. Make it a Potluck and have a sign up sheet on who is bringing what to the party. Check off beverages, ice, appetizer, sides (salad, potato/pasta/rice, vegetable, etc.) & desserts. Or you can end up with all desserts and no ice. 2. Remember your friends with allergies. Chances are someone on the invite list is vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free/dairy-free. Try to make sure there is something for them to enjoy. 3. Arrange the seating, and encourage people to make new friends. 4. Have fun! Maybe have some party games for your guests to play or a kids crafting area to keep the little ones busy.
