Making the Holidays Safe
Family gatherings, special traditions, delicious treats — the holiday season may be the most wonderful time of the year, especially for kids. Unfortunately, for emergency room doctors it’s also one of the busiest. Learn how to protect your little ones from some common holiday dangers, so you and your family can enjoy a season that’s happy and healthy.
• Food poisoning is another potential holiday hazard. Practice food safety by washing hands, utensils, dishes, and anything else that comes in contact with raw meat, including poultry and fish, and raw eggs before and after use. Don’t contaminate a serving dish with raw meat. Store leftovers properly and heat them thoroughly before serving.
Poisoning - Mistletoe, holly, poinsettias, Jerusalem cherry plants, and other plants are commonly used as decorations during the holidays. Like many plants, these are considered potentially poisonous and should be kept out of the reach of kids. Symptoms of plant poisoning can include rashes, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you suspect that your child has eaten any part of a plant, immediately call your doctor or the National Poison Center: (800) 222-1222.
Choking and Swallowing - Tree ornaments, light bulbs, icicles, tinsel, and small toys are potential choking hazards for small children because they may block the airway. The general rule of thumb is that if it’s small enough to fit in the mouths of babies and toddlers, it’s too small to play with.
• “Bubble lights” containing methylene chloride can be poisonous if a child drinks the fluid from more than one light (even if labeled nontoxic). Snow sprays may be harmful if the aerosol propellants are used improperly. • Alcohol poisoning is a common risk for children during the holiday season. Many parents host holiday parties where alcohol is served. Take care to remove all empty and partially empty cups as soon as possible. Because kids imitate adults, many may drink the beverages they see adults drinking. Children become “drunk” much more quickly than adults, so even small amounts of alcohol can be dangerous. 14 December 2019 | PB Parenting |
• Common holiday foods such as peanuts or popcorn are potential choking hazards and should not be given to children under age 4. • The needles of holiday trees can cause painful cuts in the mouth and throat of a child who swallows them. • Angel hair (made from finely spun glass) and ornament hangers may cause cuts, skin irritation, or eye damage if touched or swallowed by children. Fire - Keep your tree secured in a sturdy stand so that it doesn’t tip over (or isn’t knocked over by kids or pets) and keep it away from all heat sources, such as electrical outlets, radiators, and portable space heaters. If you buy an artificial tree, be sure it’s labeled “fire-retardant.” Unplug all lights and extinguish all candles every night before you go to bed.
• Avoid using real candles on a tree because if the needles are dry, they can easily catch fire. Never leave the room with taper candles or menorah candles burning — it only takes a minute for a spark from a candle to burst into flames. Keep lit candles away from windowsills and mantles and use only flame-retardant decorations when decking your halls. • Circuits that are overloaded with lights, decorations, and accessories can start a fire. • Have your fireplace inspected before you light your first fire of the season. You can protect your family by using a sturdy fireplace screen when burning fires. Never burn paper or pine boughs, since those materials can float out of the chimney and ignite a nearby home or your own roof. Practice fire safety, have a family emergency plan in the event of a fire, and check smoke detectors before you put up your holiday decorations.
Accidents - A lot of cooking goes on during the holiday season, so there are many opportunities for burns and scaldings. Keep pot handles turned away from the front of the stove and always keep the oven door closed. To prevent accidents, watch your kids while you bake or cook. Keep breakable ornaments out of young kids’ reach — or keep them off the tree until your children are older. If one does break, clean up the pieces quickly. Car accidents and injuries to children increase during the holiday season. Prevent a holiday ER visit by making sure that kids are buckled up securely during car rides and don’t drive after drinking alcohol. And be extra cautious when traveling at night on holidays such as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when there is a higher incidence of impaired driving. © 1995- 2010 . Surf’s Up For Sandi: World-Famous Sand Tree Will Light Up The Waterfront December 5 West Palm Beach’s 700-ton Sand Tree Stars in Clematis by Night Holiday Tree Lighting West Palm Beach’s favorite 35-foot sand tree, Sandi, is ready to shine during this year’s Holiday in Paradise campaign. On December 5, from 6-10 p.m. during a special Holiday Tree Lighting edition of Clematis by Night, Sandi will come to life for the season with light, music, and her trademark sassy personality. After traveling the beaches of the world in the off-season in search of the big wave, she has returned with a dream of cleaner beaches and oceans. This holiday season, Sandi will team up with the Office of Sustainability to bring continued awareness to efforts to protect our natural resources for the West Palm Beach community. Sandi has plenty of exciting new plans for visitors and returning guests, but she will also continue to perform nightly melodies and light shows from the Great Lawn, west of Flagler Drive on North Clematis Street, through New Year’s Eve, Tuesday, December 31, 2019.

“Sandi and the Holiday in Paradise programming have become a West Palm Beach tradition for many families,” said City of West Palm Beach Mayor Keith A. James. “The
holiday season is about coming together and celebrating the magic of the season. As we celebrate 125 years as a city, I am delighted that Sandi will bring more awareness about sustainability and the importance of protecting our beaches, Intracoastal Waterway, and environment for the next generation.” After several weeks of preparation, sand delivery, and sculpting, the Holiday Tree Lighting will be a huge celebration as Sandi makes her 2019 debut in a spectacular synchronized light and music show welcoming the season in South Florida style. In addition to Sandi’s big reveal, the evening will include live music from The Bay Kings, face painters, a holiday shopping boutique, and a visit from Santa Claus himself. “This is always one of our most favorite times of the year,” said Mary Pinak, Community Events Manager for the City of West Palm Beach Department of Parks and Recreation. “People of all ages from near and far, look forward to Sandi’s return and the next chapter in her story. We are especially excited about this year’s theme, which acknowledges the City’s commitment to sustainability, while recognizing how special it is to enjoy the holiday season in West Palm Beach with a mix of sun, surf and sand.” In addition to the Sandi lighting, daily activities this year include: (starting evening of 12/5 – 12/31) Sandi, South Florida Icon & the World’s ONLY 700-ton Surfin’ Sand Tree |The Great Lawn (Great Lawn on the West Palm Beach Waterfront, 100 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach, FL 33401 (N. How to Get Your Kids Involved in Holiday Cooking BY JOSH REISNER Now that the Holidays are almost here, one of my favorite things to do is get cooking, and maybe get a little messy, in the kitchen. When I was younger my parents would always let me help in the kitchen, which definitely sparked my passion for food (I seasoned my first turkey when I was 6 and have been doing Thanksgiving ever since.) Cooking is a great way to give your parents an extra hand, while also having fun. One of the cool things about the holidays is that you’re able to create memories and traditions special to your family. I know most teens are not as excited about preparing a meal in the kitchen as I am, but I believe we should try to give back to our parents around the holidays. So I’m sharing some key tips for getting teens and kids into the
kitchen to take on the challenge of serving it up this Holiday season. •

Get kids involved in planning the meal. What better way to get kids in the kitchen than by cooking something they love? Let little ones have a hand in creating the menu so they feel involved from the very beginning. Bonus: have them create a menu (either on a board or handouts) for guests to enjoy and make the experience special. Keep it classy. Table etiquette is something a lot of kids don’t know and when it comes to holiday dinners, why not teach them? Let them set the table while learning where all the utensils go, and you can even ask them to create their own table decorations. Teach about frozen vs. fresh produce. Sourcing locally grown produce is always preferred and can really be a game changer when it comes to flavor. If available, use real produce instead of frozen or pre-cut vegetables, or better yet, clean and cut your own vegetables. Give simple tasks. Chopping veggies comes to mind, with many holiday recipes involving a lot of prep kids can help with. Once you trust your kids to use knives, allow them to cut carrots, celery or apples and their confidence
•
may just turn into a new passion. Also, make sure you follow knife safety; sharper knives may seem more dangerous, but are the safer choice because dull knives can slip. Fun fact: I received my first chef knife during the holiday season when I was only 7 years old. Give them the dirty work. Kids usually don’t mind getting their hands dirty, so let them mash the potatoes, roll the pie dough, scoop the cookies or other “messy” tasks that can be a lot of fun.

So there you have it. When it comes to getting your kids involved in the kitchen, the most important thing to remember is they want to feel like they did something…and that means they can even help with the dishes too! About Chef Josh With a passion for great cooking before he even learned how to walk, 16-year old chef Josh Reisner might have been the world’s first baby foodie. After heading into the kitchen at 5 years old, Josh went on to become a Top 8 finalist on the hit show “MasterChef Junior” when he was just 10. Josh is currently partnering with SunnyD, which celebrates being boldly original, a mantra that Josh follows in his personal life and in the kitchen. SunnyD’s bold flavors – from classic Tangy Original to Smooth Orange – make a great secret ingredient to some of Josh’ latest custom recipes.
