BY AMY BERGMAN As a decluttering expert and tidy guru, I am always looking to simplify the “stuff” related to how we live our lives. When it comes to parties (and holidays), it seems like no matter what, there is a greeting card. I know that any ONE card is typically small and takes up only a little amount of space. But, over time, greeting cards can add up, creating clutter in our homes. I am talking about birthday, anniversary, get well, congratulations and sympathy cards---BOTH on the giving (outgoing) and receiving (incoming) ends. Below are my thoughts and ideas on how we can best acquire, store and save greeting cards. Outgoing: It is a great idea to have a stash of generic cards that you buy on sale or at a discount store (The Dollar Store and Trader Joe’s are my favorite) for any occasion on hand. This means you can easily grab what you need 8 February 2024| PB Parenting |
without having to take a special trip to the store or pay full price for a card. Where this becomes a sticky situation is when you don’t have a designated place where you store them and you don’t have them labeled or separated by occasion for easy access. An easy solution for this is to use a card storage box or even an empty shoe box to store your cards. If you want next level card storage (like the one in this photo) check out Stamp-n-Storage (https://www. stampnstorage.com/multi-level-card-holder/). Another great tip is to pre-buy holiday cards when they are discounted just after that holiday. So, this month, run out on February 15th to get those marked down It’s a good idea to have an assortment (try to have both fun and humorous to sentimental and serious) of cards for birthdays and anniversaries and a few for other occasions like sympathy and get well.
Incoming: Cards can add to our household paper clutter. Maybe give yourself and your family a finite amount of time that cards will be displayed in the home after the occasion. One week is usually enough time, but you decide how long you want the “celebrating” to continue. Once that time has passed, maybe set a reminder on your phone or calendar, there is a really simple way to process and organize cards every time they come into your home. Here are 3 simple tasks for keeping your card collection streamlined and organized. #1: DISCARD THE CUTE YET IMPERSONAL CARDS - This is the most crucial phase to master. If a card doesn’t have a sentimental message that is unique to your relationship with the “gifter,” recycle, donate, or repurpose them. Remember, the card has already served its purpose: telling you that you’re being thought of, wishing you a happy birthday, or thanking you for the gift. Once you have read the note
and have enjoyed the thought for a few days or weeks, it’s okay to get rid of it, or you can take a picture of it to save on your phone. If discarding cards after you enjoy them is especially challenging for you, here’s something to consider: What is the maximum number of notes that you could enjoy reading in one sitdown session? For some, a curated card and note collection that can be read in less than four hours is ideal. This means that if you take 3 minutes with each card, you would be keeping about 40 – 80 cards maximum. Obviously, this number can change and is personal to you, but it’s important to consider creating your own card maximum. This will encourage you to keep your collection to a manageable size. How many cards are you limiting yourself to? 1 box? 2 boxes? Choose now. For reference, I have been saving only special cards for my family of

If you’d like a more professional#2: DISPLAY YOUR FAVES - As mentioned above, looking digital copy, scan it into your computer, when you first receive a birthday, thank you, or and create a special “Card” folder. Make a routine greeting card, enjoy it! Put the card on display for of doing this process after your birthday or a week or two. There are adorable card display holidays. XOXO, Amy #3: STORE THE SPECIAL ONES The cards that bring you immense joy when you look at them, remind you of a special relationship, or are from a unique time in your life, deserve a special home. Remember that the more cards that you keep, the less time you’ll have to enjoy the most unique ones through the years. Keep ONLY the cards that will continue to bring you joy or gratitude. Below are three ways you can do this. A. SORT & LABEL: Group your cards by occasion, year, person, or sentiment. Label your card categories with postits or print labels. Another simple idea is to just group by year and then contain with a rubber band and post-it with the year before they go into a box or bin. B. DIGITIZE: The world is moving towards digital. It’s time your card mementos do too. Take a picture of the inside of your card to capture the note 10 February 2024| PB Parenting |

Fun Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Your Kids Valentine's Day doesn't have to revolve around romantic love or relationships with friends. Now that you're a parent, there are numerous delightful ways to celebrate your cutest Valentine of all – your kids! Demonstrate your love by engaging in these enjoyable V-Day activities together. 1. Host a Petite Picnic Party - Elevate the traditional tea party to a picnic affair. Explore the latest Valentine's-themed items at the Target dollar spot. If the weather allows, take it outdoors or create a cozy atmosphere in your dining room. Don't forget to add some fun hats and accessories! 2. Craft Heart-Shaped Pancakes for Breakfast Involve the kids in the morning festivities by letting them don an apron and lend a hand in making heart-shaped pancakes. Transform Valentine's Day into a special Sunday morning breakfast tradition. Check out Pg. 20 for Cocoa Kissed Heart Shaped Pancake Recipe! 12 February 2024| PB Parenting |
3. Adorn Their Door with Love - Spread love daily by attaching heart-shaped notes to your child's door. Start either at the beginning of the month or the week leading up to Valentine's Day. Express your feelings or share what you love and appreciate about them. Examples include "you are a good friend," "you are smart," or "you make us laugh." 4. Read Valentine's Day Themed Books Together - Strengthen your bond through storytelling. Pick your favorites or discover new ones like "Pete the Cat: Valentine's Day is Cool," "Llama Llama I Love You," "Guess How Much I Love You," and "Sesame Street: My Fuzzy Valentine." 5. Indulge in Pampering Time - Create an athome spa day with fun masks, and try out unicornthemed sparkling masks. Enjoy mini manis and pedis, or get creative with nail art pens for heartshaped designs.
6. Capture the Moment with a Family Photo Shoot - Set up a photo shoot with props like chalkboards, balloons, tutus, and candy. Alternatively, hire a professional photographer for a more polished session. 7. Spread Kindness Coinciding with Valentine's Day is Random Acts of Kindness Week (Feb. 14-20). Extend love beyond your family by surprising friends, neighbors, or first responders with homemade cards, candy, or flowers. Find more ideas at www.randomactsofkindness.org. 8. Design Gift Certificates for Each Other Create personalized gift certificates with promises like "I will do a chore for you" or "Play your favorite board game." Encourage creativity with options such as "Make Pancakes together" or "Pick Dinner tonight."
9. Stay "Heart Healthy" Together Given that February is American Heart Month, Valentine's Day is an opportunity to engage in physical activities as a family. Plan a walk, hike, bike ride, or have an indoor dance party if the weather is unfavorable. 10. Culminate the Day with a Special Valentine's Family Dinner - Cap off the celebrations with a special family meal. Whether preparing dinner together or opting for takeout, make the evening memorable with beautiful place settings and table decorations. Consider dressing up for an extra touch of festivity. Remember, if you have plans with your partner on Valentine's Day, these activities can be enjoyed leading up to the celebration. Cherish the opportunity to express your love, especially to your little ones. Happy Valentine's Day!

Getting Children to Cooperate with Screen Time Limits DR. TRACIE QUILL, DOCTOR OF PSYCHOLOGY AND PARENT EDUCATOR Do you feel as though your children’s screen time has increased significantly? You are not alone. 85% of parents are concerned with the amount of time their child uses screens. So what does this mean? Is it helpful in a technology driven world, or is it unhealthy? The • key lies in balance, as you probably guessed. Children can learn necessary skills when using screens and too much can be harmful emotionally, physically, and mentally. Educational research shows us that there is no substitute for full sensory learning (touch, feel, taste) and for learning to be most effective it needs to happen in reality, not virtually. Too much screen time prevents us from becoming socially and emotionally intelligent, and since our • greatest need as humans is to connect with each other this can lead to anxiety and depression, which is very common today. Research states there is also a high correlation between ADD/ADHD and • screen time, as screens lessen our attention span, not to mention creativity. I encourage you to try these tools to manage your family’s screen time: • First, know that zero screen time is recommended for children under 3, except for video calls. There is conflicting information 14 February 2024| PB Parenting |
•
out there, but the guidelines in this article are based on quality research. It interferes with brain development even when watching something educational. One hour max is recommended for preschoolers and 2 hours max for ages 6-18. Have a family meeting to come up with a plan for reducing screen time. First, you can ask children why they think too much might not be good. After that explain why you think too much isn’t good. Couple that with, “I care about your health which is why I’d like us to agree on some limits.” Children are more likely to cooperate when they understand the importance and value in something and the message of love comes through your requests. Part of the solutions can include things to do in place of screen time. It is easier to give something up if you have plans for what else to do. Start with one time of day to be free of screens (e.g. dinner). Phones can be placed in a communal basket at certain times of day if you choose. Then, periodically consider adding other times of day. Some families enjoy having Sunday’s as a tech free day. Nurture your bond with your child with undivided attention (no phones), as children
need to be played with by their parents. Children will cooperate with your limits around screen time (and other things) when they feel heard, connected to you, and understood. Spending one on one time daily (doing something fun) even for 20 minutes is one of the most important things you can do for your child’s future emotional and mental health. It’s healthy to switch one on one time between parents with each child, so that each child gets one on one time with each parent. • Lastly, sticking to the limits can be challenging. You can expect unpleasant feelings (normal). If you validate your child’s feelings during these moments with empathy while sticking to the limit you will invite cooperation. Empathy isn’t just your words it’s your loving energy. • If they try to go above the limits you might say, “I understand you like being on your phone and it can be hard to make these changes (feeling validation). I care about you and too much screen time isn’t good for us. Do you
remember our agreement around screen time? We agreed to not have our phones at the dinner table because it doesn’t feel respectful to people. Where can you put your phone away? Thank you.” Again, when children feel respected and the message of love comes through while sticking to your limits they are more likely to cooperate and respect you (for sticking to your limits). Because as I’m sure you’ve experienced, it’s human nature to want to be respectful to people that are treating us with respect.
