Letter From The Publisher Greetings, March is here and this month my “baby” Evan turns two. I am officially leaving the baby stage and heading into toddler years and terrible two’s (yikes)! Looking back at these past two years, I think some things were easier with my second baby, but there have also been new challenges that I didn’t have with my first. For instance, my second child cries a lot more. He has always been a hungry and fussy boy and at times it seems there is no end in sight. Check out page 8 for some great tips on how to calm a fussy baby from Kristin Schwarz, a local licensed midwife and childbirth educator. Do you know there is less than 60 days left of school? Where did the school year go? To keep boredom at bay, check out our 1st installment of our 3rd annual Summer Camp Directory. We have camp listings for all ages and interests. Check out our directory online for the latest updates. Please be sure to like us on facebook and subscribe to our weekly e-newsleter for the latest family events, classes and happenings. Calming a Fussy Baby
BY KRISTIN SCHWARZ, LM, CBFE, HBBE Right from the day my oldest daughter was born, she would cry and cry on end, making my husband and I feel so incredibly helpless. We were worried that something was wrong with her. She was fed, she was dry, she was warm… what could it be? Is she in pain we wondered? We took her to the pediatrician repeatedly, who told us “She has colic. Nothing we can do! Cheer up, it goes away by 3 months.” My husband and I were not willing to wait 3 months watching our daughter be so miserable. We tried EVERYTHING… from rocking to walking with her in a sling. By trial and error and coincidence we found a few things that seemed to help her a little. As I continued my education as childbirth professional I came across many valuable resources that I now share with parents in the community to help them calm their little one. Here are a few helpful tips: Attend to Baby’s Needs Right Away A newborn cannot be spoiled. Babies need to be held, snuggled and talked to. Don’t wait for the baby to cry to feed him or her, but look for cues like mouth movements, sucking on their hands, rooting etc. Make sure that baby’s diaper is dry and that baby is not too hot or too cold. Recreate the Womb Babies have very limited self-calming abilities. The womb represents a place of safety and comfort. During its nine month in the womb, the baby enjoyed constant rocking. One way
8 March 2014 | PB Parenting |
to recreate this snug environment is to “wear” the baby. There are many slings and carriers available that keep baby snug to mommy or daddy, which lets baby enjoy the rocking motion, mommy’s and daddy’s voice, and their scent and heartbeat. The womb is not a quiet place. A baby in the womb is exposed to many noises from inside the body as well as from the outside. Crying babies respond well to white noise which mimics the noise in the womb. The trick is to match the noise level to that of the baby’s cry. The louder the baby cries the louder the white noise has to be set. There are many free white noise apps available such as “Baby-Sleep” and “Sleep Machine.” Many crying babies respond well to a sidelaying position. Being held on the side with the tummy slightly against the adult forearm puts a light pressure on baby’s stomach. This can help relief gas. A gentle massage of the abdomen area is also beneficial. Please remember to always put your baby to sleep on his or her back and to consult your pediatrician if you are concerned about your baby’s health. Kristin Schwarz is a licensed midwife, childbirth educator and maternal fitness educator. She is also a certified instructor of the Happiest Baby on the Block method and the co-founder of The Wise Women’s Sanctuary. For more information go to www.thewisewomenssanctuary.com

Diaper Rash 101 BY PAMELA J. BEACH-REBER, MD, MBA, FAAP, FACEP
Every baby has diaper rash at some point
in time. I will teach you how to recognize different types of rashes that affect that area and what to do for each of them. The number one cause of diaper rashes is… diapers! Babies have always pooped and peed but how we’ve contained it has evolved from plant leaves, to animal skins, to thin cloths, to thick cloths, to disposable plastic and paper diapers. As we’ve made our modern diapers more leak-resistant, we’ve made them the perfect breeding ground for painful diaper rashes.
out--not liquid, not solid, not even air. Add those ruffled gathers that squeeze the legs, and the fact that moms use baby wipes instead of soap and water, and you have wet skin that can’t breathe, a nasty rash that gets rubbed by the diaper all day long, and one unhappy baby--and rightfully so!
So what can you do? If your baby has a diaper rash, treat it with four important things: soap, water, cream and air! With each diaper change, place the baby in the sink and wash their bottom carefully with your hand using only soap and water. Don’t use a washcloth because it can be rough and The area under a diaper is dark and damp, irritating. Then apply ointment or cream and lots of things can happen there, to make a barrier on the skin so it can heal especially when it’s sealed tight for hours. without being rubbed raw. Plain Vaseline Think of a Band-Aid on your finger. After will do (no baby powder)! Then leave the you wash your hands throughout the day or baby’s diaper off for a good 30 minutes after even a couple of hours, and then take off the changing so it can “air out.” Band-Aid, the skin is moist and pale, wrinkly, A specific kind of diaper rash that can and sometimes mushy. For this type of rash, an antifungal disposable diapers don’t let anything in or cream like Lotrimin is necessary.

Prevention is the best medicine for diaper rashes. Remember: too-tight diapers are like Band-Aids, but rather than making sores better, they can actually make them worse. Dr. Pamela J. And how can you prevent your baby from having diaper rashes in the first place? Customize your diaper! Start by pulling out the gathers around the legs. This opens up the leg of the diaper a bit, but then you must take scissors and cut the rest of the gathers in at least 8-10 spots to let the air flow thru. With the diaper on, you should be able to just see the child’s private parts. Then feed, poop, repeat!

Teaching Kids Responsibility with Pets Growing up with a family pet is a great way for kids to learn two of life’s most valuable lessons: respect and responsibility. To help parents create and foster a special bond between their human and fur kids, Pet360. com has pulled together the following tips for each stage of a child’s development: 1. Babies - Although babies are too young to care for a pet, it’s important to foster a respectful relationship between your kids and pets from the very beginning. By incorporating pets into regular family activities such as walks or playtime, your child will be more likely to grow up viewing your pet as a respected member of the family. Additionally, using praise and treats to reward your pet for reacting positively to the infant will help reassure your pet that he or she is still loved. 2. Toddlers - Old enough to interact with cats and dogs, yet too young to interpret their behavior, toddlers run the risk of instigating aggression in even the most mild-mannered of pets. Teaching children to be gentle with the family pet by saying things such as “be nice” while gently patting your pet’s coat will help them learn to respect a pet’s personal space. Teaching pets to allow little ones to play with their toys or reach into their food bowls will also help to eliminate any unwanted spats from occurring. Furthermore, avoid cleaning your pet’s teeth or face while your toddler is around, as they will inevitably want to give it a try themselves.
12 March 2014 | PB Parenting |
3. Three to Six Years Olds - Having grown up with each other for a few years, it is likely that your child and pet will have developed a strong bond. This is the perfect time to start including children in daily tasks such as feeding, playing and brushing. While young kids cannot be relied upon to remember that a pet needs to be fed or played with every day, teaching children how to perform these tasks will encourage a sense of responsibility for the health and well-being of your pet. 4. Six Years Old and Up - At this age, giving children specific tasks related to the care of the family pet can help further the child’s sense of responsibility. Try assigning easy chores at first to create a positive experience for both your child and your pet. Cleaning the water and food bowls or giving treats for tricks are great ways to help encourage your child to want to help out even more over time. Pet360.com is a personalized website dedicated to simplifying pet parenting. At Pet360.com, each member’s experience is tailored to their individual needs based on the type, breed, gender, age and size of their pets. By offering relevant tips and expert advice, connections to others with similar pets and the convenience of home shopping all in one place, Pet360.com is the ultimate resource for pet parents -- available anytime, anywhere. “She was a one-in-a-thousand chance. And here she is, the one.” I was so excited but couldn’t help thinking, “Am I ready? Do I know what I’m doing?” I walked into the New Life Center at Palms West, and for nine months they made me feel like I could do it — and that I wouldn’t be alone. They rode the roller coaster right along with me. When I was concerned or anxious, their experience and confidence reassured me; when I was excited or awe-struck, they made me feel like my pregnancy was one-of-a-kind. Today, I have a healthy, beautiful baby girl, and I couldn’t be more thankful. She's one-of-a-kind, too.

March Madness at Loggerhead Marinelife Center
All month long, LMC will be partnering with Bright Horizons – Abacoa to offer FREE public programming for children and their families to experience. Bring out your child’s imagination and creativity and participate in one of our four FREE Mommy & Me Paint programs offered every Thursday in March at 10:30 AM. Children will paint their very own sea turtle ceramic to take home (all materials included. Limit one ceramic per child). Want your child to dive into a world of sea turtle exploration? Join us on Wednesdays each week in March at 10:30 AM for a FREE Hatchling Tales program for toddlers! A sea-themed story time will be coupled with a craft that is perfectly suited for the smallest of hatchlings. Sign up your children ages 8-12 for our first-ever Coastal Explorers program where they will receive hands-on experience in the marine sciences. Upon the completion of the Coastal Explorers workshop, participants will receive a Coastal Explorer Certification from Loggerhead Marinelife Center. Pre-registration required for all FREE March Madness programs and limited space is available on a first come, first serve basis. Please RSVP your child’s attendance with Hannah Campbell, Programs Coordinator at hcampbell@ marinelife.org or at 561-627-8280 ext. 105.
