Countdown to Summer Camp A Step-by-Step Guide for Parents
BY AMY BERGMANHappy March! As we inch towards Spring, parents are beginning to think about summer plans and for kids, that may mean camp (whether day camp or sleep away). There are so many options, and the whole process may seem daunting, but have no fear!
Below are 5 simple steps you can take to organize and simplify your summer camp process.
Step 1. Discover Your Child's Excitement for Camp! Before making any assumptions, take a moment to chat with your child about the idea of attending camp. It's a chance to explore their interests and desires for the summer. Perhaps they're eager for new adventures, to
make friends, or to dive into exciting activities! Whatever it may be, let's embark on this journey together and discover what camp holds in store for them!
Step 2. Choose a Summer Camp Type
Sleepaway vs. Day Camp: Sleepaway camp ranges from 1-8 weeks and offers a variety of supervised activities. Day camp is appropriate for kids who aren't old enough, interested in or prepared for sleepaway camp.
Specialty vs. Standard/Traditional Camp: Specialty camps focus on a particular area of concentration activity, such as sports or the arts. Traditional camps provide a more well-rounded experience, typically including a mixture of arts
and crafts, sports, and outdoor events. These may include day trips to local attractions like museums or water parks.
Special Needs Camps: Many special needs camps cater to kids with varying abilities and include a full array of activities.
More to Consider: What are your child's needs, interests, and personality. What is the camp's philosophy and daily lineup of activities? Does your child thrive on a tight schedule? Look for a structured environment, rather than a looser setting. Are they looking for exposure to many new skills and activities as you'd find in a traditional camp setting, or would they prefer to hone in on one of their specific abilities, like aviation, art, technology, dance, or football? If possible, visit the camp with your child. More often than not, you can get a real feel for the place in a few minutes and you can see if you think your child will feel comfortable in the environment.
Below are some questions to ask the camp staff whether in person or on the phone to help you decide: down:
• What's your educational and career background?
• Is the camp accredited? If so, by whom?
• What's the camp's guiding philosophy, registration process and cancellation policy?
• What's the rate of camper and counselor return each year?
• What's the counselor training program like?
• What's the ratio of counselor to camper?
• What are your security, safety and medical arrangements?
• Can I speak to parents whose kids have attended the camp?
And one insider tip: If you do opt for sleepaway camp, consider having a friend of your child attend the same camp, if possible, especially if this is their first camp foray. Attend an orientation or preview event in your local area to learn more about the camp and meet other camp families who live in your town.
Step 3: Make a Decision
Give yourself (and your child) a deadline to decide what camp s/he will be attending.
Sometimes, indecision and dragging things out only add to the stress and anxiety and the sooner you know the plan, the sooner you can work on getting your child excited for the summer!
Step 4: Talk to Your Child About What to Expect at Camp
There’s comfort in knowing what to expect. Discuss the typical daily schedule, who may be there, what clothing s/he will be wearing, what will be packed, any yummy lunches or snacks that will be involved, etc.
Step 5: Prep for Camp
This may include a shopping list of clothing, supplies or a packing list for sleepaway camps. You will want to label everything so plan ahead by ordering name labels online form a great company like or maybe you just do it yourself with a fabric safe pen. Book your child’s doctor appointment NOW, most camps require a camp
Tues - Fri: 12pm-4pm Sat: 10am-4pm Sun: 12pm-4pm
physical form to be filled out by your child’s doctor.
Hopefully these simple steps will help make the summer camp decision process less complicated and get everyone in your family excited for summer! Remember: I am here if you need helping organizing and packing your child’s camp duffel!

Becoming a More Patient Parent and Why It’s Important
DR. TRACIE QUILL, PsyD.Psychologists agree that one of the biggest societal changes in the last 25 years has been the increased amount of stress and overwhelm families feel. It’s hard when companies expect employees to work excessively or when we take too much on.
Have you wondered why sometimes you are able to be patient and at other times voices get raised and your tone becomes sharp? It’s because you are at your limit in terms of emotional capacity. So becoming more patient involves increasing your emotional capacity. How do you think you can do that?
It starts with balance and saying, “No.” when you are at your limit (emotionally or physically). If you’re tired or having a bad day it’s harder to be patient and kind. Unlearning these behaviors can be done if you are willing to try and be mindful.
Here are some options to increase your emotional capacity/patience:
Stop doing things for your children that they can do for themselves. There is a wise statement amongst educators that is, “Never do for a child anything that they can do for themselves.” This might be laundry, packing lunches, cleaning/vacuuming your child’s room, (8 year olds can learn to do all of these things), making them breakfast (however, weekends are fine because it’s nurturing to do sometimes). Even toddlers can/should help with cooking (google how to do this safely). And, when children help cook, they will be way less picky about food.
Confidence comes from giving them this type of independence, not from praise. This is why housekeepers should ideally not be doing things
Award-Winning Maternity Care
For life’s most important moments, you deserve a hospital network that can deliver a higher level of maternity care. Our commitment to providing you with peace of mind begins with our level II and III designated NICUs, highly skilled physicians and nurses, advanced technology, and spa-like private suites that result in comprehensive care throughout your journey from prenatal to post-delivery.
for children they can do for themselves either. You can kindly say, “I’m going to have you do this from now on, because I believe you are capable.” If they still resist you can follow it with, “I love you and believe in you,” then walk away (after teaching them how to do it).
Children are also less likely to grow up feeling “entitled” if parents have them do things they are capable of. Age 12 and older should cook dinners and meal plan for the family weekly, without any parent help ideally, as this shows you believe in them. You can ask them what day works best for them to invite cooperation and respect their time.
Spend time in solitude daily relaxing without screens. This might be reading a book, taking a bath, or sunbathing. You can take turns with your partner, if you have one, while they play with the kids for a half hour.
Meditation is extremely powerful for increasing emotional capacity and joyful peace. Even a few minutes in the car after work can be helpful. My first meditation teacher told me that the mornings she skipped meditation, her children would say “You didn’t meditate today did you?” Another teacher of mine said, “If it’s hard for you to sit still and meditate, that means you should be doing it twice as much.”
Prioritize seeing your same sex friends weekly. A recent study said this is the single most powerful thing a person can do to significantly increase their joy in life. Ladies brunch or men’s poker night is very healthy and nothing to feel guilty about. You can take turns with your spouse watching the kids or hire a sitter. Time with same sex friends is a hallmark of a healthy partnership.
Engage in activities that bring you joy (e.g. art/crafts, music, dance, gardening, etc.) Creative endeavors are extremely healthy, healing, and rejuvenating. Fun is not a luxury, it’s a necessity
for mental and emotional health.
Consider taking a parenting class. When you take a parenting class you learn the healthiest parenting tools and there is much more ease and joy in the home. The majority of the tools that are taught in parenting classes are actually not being used by parents. I remember after one class I taught I felt so touched when a parent said, “We don’t yell anymore in our house, because of what we learned here.”
You might think, “I don’t have time or money for those things.” I can assure you that you can do anything you choose to prioritize, even if you don’t see how at the moment. There are organizations that offer free and low price parent night out babysitting in Palm Beach County. Or you can take turns with neighbors watching the children. And children need lots of play time with friends outside of school for emotional health, so everyone benefits.
Why is patience with children so important for their emotional/mental health? Patience allows for kindness and your child is always unconsciously making decisions about themselves based on how they are treated by adults. If they are talked to with respect regularly they will decide they are worthy of love. This self-esteem is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child because it will result in them choosing relationships with people that treat them with respect (friends, romantic partners later in life). This, in turn, results in feeling more joyful peace. That is what true success is really about; contentment, and we all deserve that.
Feel free to email Dr. Tracie with parenting questions. Dr. Tracie Quill is a Parent Educator & Children’s Etiquette Teacher. She coaches parents on how to raise emotionally healthy children. See an upcoming class preview and contact info at: https://raisingwonderfulchildren.com/upcomingclasses/

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with this traditional corned beef recipe from renowned Irish chef Judith McLoughlin, author of A Return to Ireland: A Culinary Journey from America to Ireland.
St. Patrick’s Colcannon & Corned Beef
Colcannon potatoes ingredients:
2½ lbs. potatoes (floury variety)
4 Tbsp. (¼ cup) milk
7 oz. curly kale (hard stalks removed)
8 spring onions (finely chopped)
1½ tsp. sea salt
¼ tsp. black pepper
4 oz. (1/2 cup) unsalted Irish butter
4 fl. oz. (½ cup) heavy whipping cream
4 fl. oz. (¼ cup) reserved cooking liquid from kale
Corned beef ingredients:
1½ lb. flat-cut brined corned beef & a little olive oil
Parsley cheese sauce ingredients:
2 oz. butter
2 oz. flour
½ pint (1 cup) whole milk
¼ pint (½ cup) chicken stock
1 oz. (1/4 cup) Dubliner Irish cheese (grated)
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
handful of curly parsley (leafy part/finely chopped) curly parsley sprigs (for garnish)
1. To cook the brisket, it can be slowly boiled or baked in the oven. Low and slow is the key. For the oven method, preheat the oven to 300°, then wrap up the brisket like a parcel inside a sheet of foil, fat side up.
2. Drizzle a little olive oil over and roast for 1 hour per pound, leaving 15 minutes for the meat to rest before carving.
3. To make the Colcannon, place the potatoes in a large pan of cold, salted water with milk, adding just enough water to cover the potatoes.
4. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat and simmer for about 20 minutes until the potatoes are soft when pierced with a fork.
5. Drain the potatoes with a metal strainer then set the potatoes back on the warm stovetop to allow them to dry out a little.
6. In a large saucepan, bring some water to a roaring boil and blanch the kale for 1 minute.
7. Saving some of the cooking water, drain the kale, roughly chop, and place the kale in a blender, pulsing for a few seconds.
8. Melt the butter with the cream and ¼ cup of the retained cooking liquid from the kale. Infuse the spring onions, cooking for 30 seconds to soften.
9. Mash potatoes and slowly add the resulting liquid. Fold in the kale, salt, and pepper.
10. Prepare the parsley sauce by melting the butter in a small saucepan. Add the flour and allow to
cook gently for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Whisk in the milk and chicken stock and bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 3–4 minutes. Stir in the cheese and mustard and cook for 1 more minute. Season with salt and pepper and stir in chopped parsley.
11. To serve, spoon the potatoes onto a warm plate. Place slices of corned beef on top. Drizzle meat and dish with about 2 tbsp. of parsley sauce.
12. Garnish with a small sprig of curly parsley and serve immediately.
From Judith: Most Americans are shocked when I tell them that my first meal exposure to the infamous St. Patrick’s meal of corned beef and cabbage was when I moved to the USA. What we refer to as corned beef in Ireland comes in a tin and is a rather unsavory entrée choice, but in America,
corned beef is a brined, cured beef that is delicious and has its origins with the Irish immigrants in the Americas who brined beef as they did pork back in old Ireland.
About the Author: Judith McLoughlin is an Irish chef and owner of a gourmet food business in Georgia called The Shamrock and Peach. Specializing in Irish cuisine, Judith has created her own unique food fusion by blending the techniques of her homeland with the newfound flavors of the South. Growing up in County Armagh in Northern Ireland and setting down roots in the South, over the past decade Judith has become one of the most recognized Irish faces and brands in Atlanta, throughout the American South and abroad.. Before A Return to Ireland, she published a cookbook entitled The Shamrock and Peach.
