Letter From The Publisher “Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother.” - Lin Yutang Greetings, The job of being a mom is not often filled with a lot of recognition for your efforts and dedication but one Sunday a year, we get a special day! Hopefully your spouse and children will give you a break! If they seem a little clueless, leave the article on page 8, “It’s Her Day” out where they will see it as a gentle reminder of some ways to treat you! From all of us at PB Parenting, we hope your Mother’s Day is one that is peaceful and relaxing. We all work so hard the other 364 days a year, we all deserve one day off! There are 24 days (maybe less) of school until Summer Break! Do you have your summer planned yet? It isn’t too late to sign up for camp! We have camps for all ages and interests starting on page 14. Check out our directory online for the latest updates. Also a quick thank you to everyone for making our 3rd annual Summer Camp Expo a big success! Thank you South Florida Science Center and Aquarium for hosting, Brian D. Guralnick Injury Lawyers for covering the first 200 adult entrants and sponsoring our Fun Zone, all the summer camp vendors who braved the rain and of course to all the families who attended! Check out page 15 for a photo recap. We can’t wait for next year! Happy Parenting,

It’s Her Day: 17 Practically Perfect

Presents for the Mom in Your Life BY RHONDA FRANZ

1. Courier service. For inside the house. Let her take a break from her usual hustle-and-bustle. Whenever she needs anything from any room, run and get it for her, all day long. 2. (Bed) Room service. After you have let her sleep in, of course. 3. A night out/a night off. With girlfriends, with Daddy, with family whatever works. 4. A magazine subscription. The magazine she always picks up to read in a store, but never buys a subscription to. 5. Fine art. Not Picasso. Special, personal art from her children:

8 May 2017 | PB Parenting |

watercolors, finger painting, or something they brought home from school - framed and ready to hang on the wall. 6. A hobby gift basket. Think about what the mom in your life likes to do outside of work, family, and household. An artistic mama might need some new tools of the trade. A knitter, perhaps new patterns or yarn. A mom who likes to scrapbook is probably lacking some supplies she could use, and a reading mom would always welcome books. 7. A game app for her smartphone. Just in case she wants to while away the day in bed.

8. Subscription to a flower delivery service. A perfect way to welcome spring and summer. 9. A totally frivolous new pair of shoes. A kind she wants and likes, but absolutely doesn’t need. 10. Ditto for a new piece of jewelry. 11. Subscription to a grocery delivery service. 12. Business cards for her profession as “Mom.” Fun contact cards for any mom, whether she works at home or away from it. 13. No sibling rivalry for at least one day. For the moms with kids at home. Fair warning: if you give a mom one day of no sibling rivalry, she is certain to ask for more.

14. Her favorite drink. A pound of coffee, a box of gourmet spiced tea, a bottle of her favorite wine (chilled and ready to drink). 15. Her favorite snack. More than just a serving size. Perhaps enough to last her week. 16. Cash. Skip the gift card. Cash is ideal. Don’t let her spend it on your next field trip with children. 17. A frivolous personal service she would never purchase herself. A manicure with nail art, bold highlights in her hair, henna tattoo (or perhaps a real one). Moms get to have fun, too. Rhonda Franz lives, writes, and raises her children in her Northwest Arkansas home. Most of her shoes are brown and sensible, so #9 is really on her heart this year.

“Amazing Butterflies” May 6 – September 29

Amazing Butterflies invites you to shrink down to the undergrowth to become one of the most extraordinary creatures on earth. Produced by Minotaur Mazes of Seattle, this immersive experience is based on an exhibition created for the Natural History Museum in London, featuring their scientific input and interpretation. Embark on a challenging journey teeming with friends and foes, revealing the unusual relationship between caterpillars, butterflies and their natural surroundings. Enter the interactive maze, adventure through the leaves, learn how to move like a caterpillar, discover an ant that reaps the rewards of an unusual friendship, then transform into a butterfly and take

12 May 2017 | PB Parenting |

flight! Together, families will explore this interactive experience and learn the surprising challenges butterflies face every day. Become a caterpillar and find your way through a secret, wild world. As you navigate the terrain filled with challenges around every twist and turn, take on puzzles, games and exciting interactivities. The brave can even take to the air and soar down the butterfly zip slide. You’ll discover fascinating facts about one of our planet’s most amazing lifecycles, but beware. The maze includes dead-ends, down which lurks poisonous plants and predators waiting to pounce. Choose the right route, stamp your card along the way, and emerge as a beautiful butterfly.

The mission of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is to “open every mind to science” and the indoor/ outdoor venue boasts more than 100 hands-on educational exhibits, a 10,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquariumfeaturing both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium, conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall, Pre-K focused “Discovery Center,” an interactive Everglades exhibit and the 18-hole Conservation Course – an outdoor putting course with science-focused education stations. Simple, Healthy Summer Snacks As temperatures climb and summer sets in, a slight change in diet can help maintain energy without overfilling on hot days. Vegan and vegetarian diets are becoming a popular trend, but many people are also opting to be semi-vegetarians, also known as the flexitarian diet. A flexitarian diet means you don’t have to eliminate meat from your diet but can still reap the health benefits associated with plant-based diets. Plant-based proteins like beans, peas, nuts, seeds, soy and lentils are chock-full of nutritional benefits from disease-fighting phytonutrients to cholesterol-lowering fiber. They’re also an excellent way to add lowsodium and low-cholesterol protein to your diet that can leave you feeling satisfied but not stuffed.
