Letter From The Publisher
As we bid farewell to another school year and welcome the another summer, it's an opportune time to reflect on the joys of being a parent and celebrate the upcoming Father's Day.
For parents, summer is a season filled with endless possibilities. It's a time when we can step away from daily routines and immerse ourselves in memorable experiences with our children. Whether it's exploring new destinations, embarking on family road trips, or simply enjoying lazy afternoons at the park, this season is perfect for creating lasting memories. Check out page 12 for some fun ideas on what to do this summer.
Summer camps offer a fantastic option for parents who want their children to experience the fun and enriching activities of camp while returning home each evening. Day camps provide a diverse range of programs, from sports and arts to STEM and outdoor adventures, catering to a wide array of interests. These camps offer a perfect blend of learning, play, and socialization in a safe and supervised setting. There are still spots available for camp! Check out our annual summer camp directory on page 16.
Father's Day, just around the corner, presents a perfect occasion to celebrate the incredible dads who play an indispensable role in our lives. Check out page 8 for 10 ways to create a fun day for Dad.
On behalf of PB Parenting, we wish all fathers a happy and fulfilling Father's Day. May this day serve as a reminder of the immense impact fathers have on their children's lives.

Summer Reading Adventure!
BE A SCRIBE!: Working For A Better Life In Ancient Egypt, is a beautiful, vibrant, informative and sophisticated non-fiction book that details life in ancient Egypt (perfect for Ages 8 to 99, truly!)
The author, Michael Hoffen, is 16 years old! Michael translated and wrote the book, with Christian – his teacher and mentor – overseeing it for accuracy and guidance. The book is virtually a translation of a work of ancient Egyptian literature, "The Satire of the Trades" also called "The Instruction of Khety." Together, Michael and Christian created the rich graphics, typography, and imagery within its pages, meeting week after week for two years to bring these amazing artifacts and stories to life.
What's more is that the book is so pertinent to some of the things young adults have to face today: Have your parents ever told you they want a better life for you than they had? Well, those conversations have been happening for thousands of years! Be a Scribe follows the story of a father named Khety who takes his son Pepi to school to learn how to read and write. (Sound familiar?) These skills are necessary to become a scribe, which is the best job in ancient Egypt. Along the way, Khety takes Pepi through all the different jobs during that time and offers some fatherly wisdom to help Pepi be the best he can be.

Summer Sun & Fun
Summer is as easy as A-B-C from Camp Mommy/Daddy or Grandma to Weekend Fun to Summer Vacation. Here are some suggestions to keep the fun times of Summer going!
A is for Art! When the mid-day temperatures hit over 90 degrees seek some shade or a/c and work on an art project with the kids. Not creative? Let the experts at ArtNest, Armory Art Center, Kids Need More Art, Lighthouse ArtCenter or Picasso’s help you with a class or take home kit for the kids!
B is for the Beach! People from all over the world travel to enjoy our beautiful beaches that we have year round! It is easy to take for granted what is right here in our backyard! Head out early to beat the hot mid-day sun and don't forget the beach umbrella and sunscreen!
C is for Camp! Summer Camp is a great way for the kids to have fun and mom and dad to have a break! Check out our Summer Camp Guide on Page 16 and online (www.pbparenting.com) for suggestions to send your little ones for fun!
D is for Discovery! Check out the Sandoway Discovery Center. There are sharks, rays and more! Learn about Florida’s coastal eco system. Tickets are sold online at www.sandoway.org.
E is for Energy! Seriously where do these kids get it from! Stay cool and let them bounce it all
out at Adrenaline Entertainment Center in Lake Worth. Their Summer Rush deal is awesome 3 hours of jumping, a slice of pizza and a water for $30. Monday - Friday from 10 AM - 4 PM.
F is for Family Game Night! Turn off the screens and spend some family time together. Some of our favorite games are Sorry, Monopoly, Clue, Uno, Apples to Apple and the Game of Life.
G is for Golf! Check out the 18-hole mini golf course at the Cox Science Center and Aquarium.
H is for Hungry! These kids are always hungry! Get them involved with cooking and meal planning. Let them pick dinner and help you make it. Teaching children to cook is a valuable life skill. Show them a cooking video online, go shop for the ingredients and replicate it at home.
I is for Ice Cream! My kids love to go out and get ice cream. Their favorite lately is the frozen yogurt places with the add your own toppings. I try not to judge but gummy worms on mint chocolate chip!
12 June 2024| PB Parenting |
J is for Join! Membership has its perks that is why PB Parenting recommends joining and becoming a member! Cox Science Center and Aquarium, Schoolhouse Children's Museum and Learning Center, Sandoway Discovery Center, Palm Beach Zoo, and Norton Art Museum all offer family memberships. They usually pay for themselves in 2-4 visits and many have reciprocal memberships to other museums to receive free or discount admissions which can be very handy when traveling!
K is for Kayaks and Paddleboards! Spend a few hours on the water kayaking. There are places all along the intracoastal to rent kayaks.
L is for Library! The Palm Beach County Library is a great place to grab some books for your
summer reading list.
M is for Manatee! Kick off Summer with Mia's Summer Shell-A-Bration at Manatee Lagoon. This a free event on Saturday, June 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will include face painting, a scavenger hunt, beach bingo and more.
The event’s theme is “Manatee Moments” to promote conservation efforts and raise awareness about these gentle giants. Learning opportunities abound with Manatee Tales, a “Manatee Rescue” simulation, and more. Check out www.manateelagoon.com to learn more.
N is for Naps! LOL we wish... but every day you should schedule some quiet time. Children don’t have to nap but some screen free time
reading, drawing or journal writing would be appropriate.
O is for Outings- We love day trip outings! It is a great way to get out for a change of scenery. Hop on the brightline train and head south to Miami or Fort Lauderdale to the museums there. For a bigger outing you can even take the Brightline to Orlando and visit the Crayoloa Experiece!
P is for Parks and Playground! Make a plan to head outside early before it gets too hot and enjoy the many parks Palm Beach County has to offer. Find out what your local park has to offer at www.discover.pbcgov.org/parks.
Q is for Quest! Scavengers Hunts are a lot of fun! Print a sheet online and take it with you on the nature trail or in the car. It will keep the kids busy looking the items on their list. You can also use the camera on a phone or tablet to document their discoveries.
R is for Road Trip - We know the price of gas is high but a road trip can still be cheaper than flying. Either a short trip in and around Florida (We love St. Augustine or St. Pete!) or go further - Savannah, Georgia, Asheville, North Carolina, Chattanooga, Tennessee. These towns all have fun family activities to enjoy. A few summers ago my family and I went to Chattanooga and really loved the mountains, Ruby Falls and the Incline Railroad. It was such a fun trip and we found some cool quirky stops along the way!
S is for Schoolhouse - The Schoolhouse Children's Museum and Learning Center is a great place for kids to enjoy Summer. Check out their calendar on their facebook page, it is filled with fun storytimes, art, and movement classes.
T is for Treasure Coast- The Treasure Coast is just a short drive north of us and has kid friendly places like McKee Botantical Gardens. McKee has a beautiful children's garden for kids
to have fun and explore. Learn more at www. mckeegarden.org.
U is for U.V. - With all the summer fun you are having don’t forget to protect you and your kids skin with sunscreen!
V is for Visit- Summer is a perfect time to visit Grandparents! I remember as a child staying over at my grandmother's during the summer and baking cookies and spending time with her. The kids won't miss school and maybe Grandma will keep them a few days for a welcome break for mom and dad!
W is for Water Safety! Kids love water! We have so much of it around us from the beach to pools. If your child doesn’t know how to swim or isn’t a strong swimmer, Summer is a great time to get some lessons in.
X is for eXtra Careful! Summer can be fun but also can be accident prone! If you do find yourself in a jam, After Hours Pediatrics is a good place to get quickly checked out.
Y is for Yard! Sometimes you just need to keep it simple and go play in the Yard! Sidewalk chalk, sprinklers, hoola hoops, scooters are some fun ways to enjoy your own space!
Z is for Zoo! Check out the Palm Beach Zoo! Spend time walking around outside and checking out the animals. Kids are free in June and July with a paid adult admisson.
Summer will be over before you know it. School returns August 10th so pack in all the fun you can! Please share your adventures with us online in our PB Parenting Facebook groups!
Have a Fun and Safe Summer

BY AMY BERGMAN
You’ve made all the reservations and planned the activities; your summer vacation is right around the corner and you should be excited but instead, you are stressed. Here’s your checklist of last-minute things to organize your trip so you can relax and enjoy it!
1. Clear the Deck
Mark your travel dates on your calendar and block at least 2 days before and after the trip without any appointments, meetings, or celebrations if possible. This will give you some time to stay focused on your trip preparation and also allow for you to decompress and catch up once you return. Something always comes up just as you are about to leave town, so allow
space and time for those last-minute crises.
2. Do Some Research
From plane tickets to passports and other documentary requirements, you will need to prepare these beforehand. Depending on where you are traveling to and how you are traveling, you will need different documents and paperwork. Doing this background work now will save you time and headache later. For example, does your trip require a passport? If so, be sure to find it and check its expiration date.
Are you traveling with minor children? Then you must have written permission from parents
22 June 2024| PB Parenting |
or guardians if you are not the parent. Here is where you can find a FREE Child Travel Consent Form. This might have to be notarized as well, so best to prepare this ahead of time.
Once you have researched and gathered updated and current versions of all the travel documents you need, put all the paperwork in an envelope or folder and label it clearly. Take photos of these and SAVE them in your phone, marking them as “favorite” (by tapping the heart at the bottom of the photo) for easy access. This will help you avoid panic during your trip should you need to find them quickly.
Are you traveling with other adults or if your kids are old enough to be responsible for their own papers? If so, assign everyone their own folders for a hassle-free trip. Giving everyone their own information makes for much less shuffling around papers and a lot less time looking for lost items.
Talking to friends and family who have traveled to your destination is helpful advice. Here are some other ideas: Does your destination have a visitor’s website? Check it out to make sure you are going to see all the highlights and what is suggested to make your visit a success. Seek out any Facebook groups for your trips, quite often specific cruise lines and cities have groups where you can post questions and see suggestions of other travelers going to the same place.
3. Get Packing
Since you already know where you are going and when, you can research the weather conditions for your trip up to 10 days from departure day. Use a weather app like The Weather Channel to check not only travel conditions for the roads and for air travel, but for packing as well.
| PBParenting.com | June 2024 23
MAKE SURE THEY’RE IN THE RIGHT CAR SEAT NHTSA.gov/TheRightSeat
Start to choose your outfits and lay them out in a separate room (dining room table works well) at least a week before your departure. Group first by family member and use a packing list. This will allow plenty of time to do laundry or purchase items if needed. Think about the activities you have planned (swimming, fancy meals, hiking, etc.) and any clothing or items related to each one. Will you need light clothes, or will you be layering a lot? Dual-purpose items, such as pants that turn into shorts or a jacket that turns into a travel pillow, can be a game changer. Choosing pieces that can be layered or worn for different occasions will save you major space in your luggage. Check the required dimensions for any carry-on items and weight limits for checked luggage for your airlines and try to pack light, as this will save you costs in airline baggage fees.
Be sure to check the amounts of certain toiletry products you can fly with if it is applicable. Check to see if you need an AC/DC adapter for electrical items or bright light reading material, and bring travel games if you are traveling with kids. In the event of delays, these activities will keep them busy!
Once you are ready to actually pack your suitcase, here are some tips:
• File Fold or Roll the clothing to save space
• Decide what you are going to hand carry vs. in checked baggage
• Put shoes in plastic bags (recycled grocery bags work well) at the bottom of the suitcase.
• Use Packing Cubes & Compression Cubes to maximize the space
• Traveling should be a fun and relaxing time to make memories with your family. These tips should help you be prepared and take away some of the stress. Enjoy the journey!

Why it matters: At Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), safety is the cornerstone of our commitment to customers and employees. It is not a matter of if, but when the next hurricane will hit our state, which is why it’s important to be proactive in planning for the six-month-long hurricane season. FPL urges Floridians to be prepared this storm season and to be aware of potential safety hazards at all times.
What to do before, during and after a storm: With the below checklist, you're on your way to a safer and more prepared hurricane season. For more tips, visit us at FPL.com/storm.
Create an emergency plan with your family
• Determine if your home or business is in a flood
and/or evacuation zone and review evacuation routes.
• Determine your backup power source or make arrangements to relocate if a storm warning is issued.
• The Division of Emergency Management recommends keeping gas tanks at least half full during hurricane season. For electric vehicles (EV), make sure to maintain a 50%-80% charge at all times.
• Contact your local emergency management office if you or anyone you know has special needs, in case of evacuations. Apply for our Medically Essential Service if someone in your home is dependent on electric-powered, lifesustaining medical equipment.

Build an emergency kit
• Prepare to be self-sufficient for an extended period of time. Stock up on non-perishable food, bottled water, medications, flashlights, batteries and a first-aid kit.
• Don't forget phone chargers, power banks and important documents in a waterproof container – including insurance policies, health cards, birth certificates, Social Security cards, a list of important phone numbers and medications and a copy of your FPL bill.
Prepare your home
• Install an approved hurricane shutter system over windows and doors or have alternate coverings such as plywood.
• Store outside objects inside, fasten doors and windows, cover valuables and furniture with plastic and move away from windows.
• Turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, including pool equipment.
• Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings ahead of time to keep food fresh longer in the event of a power outage.
• DO NOT attempt to trim any vegetation growing on or near any overhead power lines. Only hire qualified professionals to trim trees and other vegetation near power lines. Visit FPL. com/trees for more information on our tree
trimming policies.
• Look up and note the location of power lines before you begin working on a ladder. Be sure that ladders or scaffolds are far enough away so that you – and the ends of the tools you're using – don't come within 10 feet of power lines.
Stay safe and informed
• If you use a portable generator, read and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to set it up outside – not in your home or garage – and connect appliances directly to it. Do not wire your generator directly to your breaker or fuse box, because the power you generate may flow back into power lines and cause injuries. Visit our generator safety page for more generator and post-storm tips.
• Stay far away from downed power lines, and flooded and debris-laden areas that may be hiding downed power lines. Do not touch anything that may be touching a downed power line.
• Follow local news and @insideFPL for updates on storm conditions and be sure to heed the advice of emergency management officials on evacuation orders.
• Bookmark FPL.com and save 1-800-4-OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243) to your cell phone to report and check the status of your restoration.
