Beat the Heat: Indoor Fun for Hot Summer Days BY SARAH LYONS movies to check out. When you get home, spend some time relaxing and reading.

The dog days of summer have settled in and it’s too hot to play outside all day. This leaves the kids with lots of energy to burn. Here are 15 easy ways to entertain the kids and keep cool at the same time. 1. Get wet - The obvious place to keep cool is in the water. Take the kids to the pool, splash pad, or water park. Get out the sprinkler, baby pool or water table in the backyard. Try having a water balloon fight. 2. Movie marathon - Let the kids enjoy a movie marathon in the comfort of the house. Make popcorn or cool off with some ice cream while you enjoy relaxing and watching movies through the hottest part of the day. Often theater’s have dollar movies during the summer just for kids that make a great break from the heat of the day without breaking the bank. 3. Get crafty - Paint, play with play dough, or make bead bracelets. Allow the kids to get creative by making their own scrapbook or finding items in your recycle bin they can make into sculptures. 4. Library trip - Take the kids to the library to cool off and find some great books and 8 July 2017 | PB Parenting |

5. Indoor play - Check local listings for open gyms, indoor playgrounds, or other fun indoor activities where the kids can run and play without getting overheated. 6. Cool treats - Who doesn’t love a cool treat when it’s sweltering outside? Enjoy some ice cream or popsicles with the kids. For extra fun, try making your own. 7. Put on a show - Have the kids work together to put on a play, puppet show, or make up a dance routine and perform for you. 8. Play a typically outdoor game inside Try playing hide and seek, hopscotch, or jump rope inside. 9. Picnic - Have an indoor picnic in the living room since it’s too hot to eat outside. 10. Home science - Try a science experiment at home. Make your own volcano, mix food coloring, or make a balloon rocket to teach the kids about science and stay cool indoors. Pinterest is loaded with easy activities to enthral your children. 11. Make cookies - Make no-bake cookies so that you do not have to turn the oven on.

12. Get out early, or late - Run errands or play outside early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler. 13. Build a fort - Have the kids make a fort with pillows and blankets for some indoor fun. A small fan can also help keep them cool and keep their blankets afloat. 14. Race track - Use masking tape to make a race track on the floor and let the kids see who drives the fastest. 15. Ice - Make a block of ice in advance. You can make your own art by putting on a cookie sheet or shallow pan and use salt and food coloring to melt the ice. You can also freeze things in the ice and let the kids play with the small toys as they fall out. Sarah Lyons is a busy mom of six kids, including 2 year old triplets.

Don’t Let the Summer Heat Wither Your Workout BY ASHLEY TALMADGE You’ve finally got your exercise regimen in place, and you’re seeing results from that daily run through the streets of your neighborhood, or your boot camp classes in the park. But what happens to your workout during the wilting hot summer months? It’s important to take the heat seriously, but that doesn’t mean you need to give up your healthy habits. A few adjustments to your schedule and routine can make all the difference. Hydration—it’s not all hype. Rule number one for successful summer workouts? Stay hydrated. Adam Wells, PhD and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, is an assistant professor of Exercise Science at the University of Central Florida. He says it’s a good idea to check your hydration level 10 July 2017 | PB Parenting |

before you start exercising. “You may already be dehydrated prior to engaging in exercise,” says Wells. He adds that urine color is a good gauge—the darker your urine, the less well-hydrated you are. Light yellow (like chablis) means you’re good to go. Deep amber (like apple juice) means you’d better drink some fluids first. Wells says that sweat rates average between 1 and 1.5 liters per hour during exercise, and this volume must be matched by fluid intake to maintain proper hydration. Experts agree that during a typical workout (under 90 minutes), hydration can be maintained by sipping plain water. During high intensity or longer workouts (more than 2 hours), sports drinks and gels can help replace electrolytes, like sodium and potassium, which are lost through prolonged sweating. Stavros Kricos is a Certified

Personal Trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and has been training athletes for ten years. “I cannot stress enough the importance of proper hydration,” he says. “You would be surprised how many things are affected—sleep, metabolism, organ function, recovery time, brain health, bone health.” Proper hydration also means not overdoing it. Hyponatremia (“water intoxication”) can result from rehydrating with large amounts of fluid, exceeding what a person sweats out and thus diluting electrolyte concentration. The condition can be life-threatening and is associated mostly with endurance sports; some say slower and smaller athletes are more at risk. However, Wells says hyponatremia is relatively rare and “ will likely occur only after extended exercise in the heat, and in conjunction with

Getting Hydration Right

Fluid needs vary widely from person to person, and from day to day. Factors may include: physical condition, body type, duration/intensity of workout, weather. Tips for proper hydration: - Check weight before/after your workout. - Check urine color before/after your workout. - Sip water or a sports drink during exercise. - Avoid “chugging” your drink all at once. - Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages before/during exercise. The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) recommends: 14-22 ounces water 2 hours before exercise 6-12 ounces water or sports drink every 15-20 minutes during exercise After exercise, slowly drink 16-24 ounces water or sports drink for every pound lost during workout.

electrolyte loss through sweat.” Kricos agrees, saying, “While hyponatremia is a concern, it pales in comparison to the threat of dehydration.” (See Sidebar 1) Seek shadows, shade, and shelter. Adjust your schedule to avoid midday heat, find shade in your environment, and know when to celebrate the innovation of air con. Amy Calandrino has been running for about three years, specializing in shorter distances up to half marathons, combined with high intensity interval training. To stay on track through the summer, she says, “I train before 9am or after 5:30pm— never in the heat of the day. It only took one 9:30am run to realize that it’s just too hot!” Wells adds, “ The heat index—how hot it actually feels when humidity is factored in—can vary 10-15 degrees between the direct sunlight and the shade. And high humidity limits evaporative cooling, since the air is near saturated with water vapor.” Because of this, exercising in hot, humid weather can elevate the body’s core temperature to a dangerous level, resulting in muscle cramps, heat exhaustion, or even lifethreatening heat stroke. (See Sidebar 2) Both Wells and Calandrino advise that the effects of dehydration and heat injuries are cumulative. Being dehydrated one day can lead to heat exhaustion the next. And if you’ve suffered heat exhaustion, it will take a while for your body to recover. “ You can avoid putting yourself at risk by being prepared,” says Calandrino. Fresh air and varied scenery add to the pleasure of exercising outdoors. But there are times when it’s just safer to jog on the treadmill or pedal over virtual hills in the spin room. When to Call It Quits

A heat emergency happens in stages. When you notice these warning signs, stop exercising, get out of the heat, and rehydrate. Heat Cramps: Muscle tightness and cramping, especially in the legs and abdomen. Heat Exhaustion: Cramping, dizziness, nausea/vomiting, headache, excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat, irritability, clammy/pale skin. Heat Stroke: Body temperature over 104 degrees F, dry skin, confusion, irrational behavior, weak/rapid pulse, seizures, loss of consciousness. Heat stroke is an emergency requiring immediate medical intervention!

the local gym for day passes and monthly specials. Many also offer deep discounts on class packages and memberships through Groupon and other daily deal sites. Slooowww down. Calandrino says she’s also learned to ease up her pace during the summer months. “I’ve found that slowing down during the hot season doesn’t hinder my long-term performance at all,” she says. “When the weather cools off again in the fall, I can’t wait for my pace to quicken. With consistent and conservative training, I’ve been setting new personal records each season.” There’s science to support Calandrino’s experience. Recent research suggests that when done correctly, training in the heat can improve subsequent performance under both hot and cool conditions. Just as with altitude acclimation, heat acclimation maximizes oxygen consumption. In addition, it

Tips for Simple Summer Travel Savings

Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or with the entire family, there are ways to get where you’re going and enjoy your time there without spending your life savings. One of the easiest ways to save on summer travel is to take advantage of free websites and mobile apps that do the deal finding for you. Booking Airfare • Get fare alerts. Take the worry out of finding the best price by signing up for fare alerts to get email notifications when the cost of your flight itinerary changes. Travel websites like Hipmunk offer the service for free. • Pull the trigger. If you see a great fare, book it. All airlines selling airfare in the U.S. allow you to cancel within 24 hours without any penalties as long as you purchased a ticket at least seven days before the flight. Many airlines also let you hold a fare for a short time for a small fee. • Try metasearch sites. Search for airfare on websites like Hipmunk, BookingBuddy, and SmarterTravel.com, which compare top travel sites to show the best flight or hotel at the cheapest price.

Finding the Perfect Place to Stay • Book hotels last-minute. Hotels often offer special mobile-only rates for last-minute bookers. For example, Hipmunk’s Tonight Deals saves app users up to 60 percent on hotel rates. • Try a vacation rental. Rates can be cheaper than hotels and cooking your own meals saves on eating out. Airbnb and HomeAway are popular vacation rental websites. • Look at reviews. At a glance you’re able to see whether past hotel guests were happy with the price of breakfast or thought the hotel was a value. Activities and Dining • Pre-purchase activities. Browse activities or dining deals on sites like Groupon or LivingSocial and pre-purchase the ones you like at a significant discount. Make reservations well in advance for the dates you’ll be in town. • Find last-minute dining deals. Use the Yelp app to identify local restaurants offering a deal. Just search nearby restaurants and filter by “offering a deal” to taste local flavors at a discount.

Getting Around • Walk it off. Use a site like Walk Score to identify and stay in areas that are walkable to avoid cab fares and public transportation costs. • Try short-term car rental. If you’ll need a car on and off, try services like Zipcar or Getaround. You can borrow a car for as little as an hour so you don’t pay for it when you’re not using it.

• Rideshare. Uber or Lyft rates are often cheaper than cab fares and the apps are free. In addition, you pay through the apps so you never have to pull out your wallet in an unfamiliar neighborhood.
