Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Welcome to our 3rd annual Green/Eco issue. We have many tips on helping your children learn what being green is all about from “Trash Talk” and learning about recycling on page 12 to helping out in the garden on page 8. Any effort no matter how small can help preserve the earth for future generations. Being the oldest of 4 girls, I was all too familiar with “Sibling Strife”. The daily bickering and tattle telling on each other. Now that I have two children myself, I am once again reminded of how my mom must have felt as our “referee”. Turn to page 16 for tips on how to keep the sibling power struggle at bay. The school year is ticking away and Summer will be here before you know it! We have added new camps and now have over 40 listings in our 3rd annual Summer Camp Directory (page 20). We have camps for all ages and interests. Check out our directory online for the latest updates. Please be sure to like us on facebook and subscribe to our weekly e-newsleter for the latest family events, classes and happenings. Digging in the Dirt: Tips for Spring Gardening With Young Children BY RHONDA FRANZ Trying to manage growing of vegetables and planting spring flowers can be overwhelming with young children in tow, but it can be done! Spring is a great time to let children get down and dirty with you in the soil: when you’re cleaning out your garden for planting, there is no risk of fresh flowers getting pulled or seeds being trampled. If you enjoy digging in the dirt, share the experience of working in the great outdoors with your children. Use the following tips to make the experience fun, healthy, and educational for both you and your children. 1. Teach the Tools. Take time at the beginning of your gardening season to show your child the various tools gardeners use. Consider providing them with their own bag or box of tools to use so they can work alongside you. Depending on your child’s age and maturity, let them use a few of your small tools (spades, dandelion diggers), or purchase an inexpensive set of plastic toy tools.
8 April 2014 | PB Parenting |
2. Give them a garden of their own. It does not have to be big. They can appreciate having dirt in a small box, or a sectioned area in your garden. Use the space to show them how to do real gardening, but let them work in it however they choose. 3. …And let them help in yours. They may have their own dirt pile, but they will probably want to assist you in yours. Make sure to have a few child-friendly tasks for them such as pulling out weeds, adding more dirt, and clearing the garden of sticks. 4. Build on their curiosity. Earthworms, ladybugs, bees, and other plant-friendly creatures will start to make their appearance this time of year. Teach your child the names of each and watch as they learn. Let them hold a bug on their hand or cover up a worm with dirt so he can head back down in the soil.
5. Include the infants. Got babies? Don’t let them keep you from planting. Grab your portable swing, bouncy seat, or travel play pen and put it to good use. Park your baby outside near the garden and let her get a healthy dose of fresh air while you work away. 6. Don’t sweat the mess. Dress children in play clothes and let them have fun! Just hose them off or have them step in a small tub of water before heading in the house—and make it a bath night. Rhonda Franz is a mom, home manager, and freelance writer. She lives with her husband and three young boys, all of whom will be getting down—and dirty— in the garden this spring.

Meet me at the Green Market Buying your fruits and vegetables from one of the many local green markets in Palm Beach County is not only good for you, it is good for the environment as well as your pocketbook. Purchasing locally grown or made products at area green markets allows the buyer to get the most out of their food shopping experience. Benefits include: • Purchasing fresh foods at lower costs. • Awareness of less familiar produce. • Discovering where different foods come from. • Produce bought at markets uses less packaging. • Reducing your carbon footprint by using less “food miles” — the distance food travels from where it is grown to where it purchased is significantly reduced when it comes from green markets. • Purchasing items at green markets supports the local economy.
Green markets are very child-friendly. Many even include a children’s play/activity area, and live music/entertainment. Let your child get involved in the food process by letting them purchase a new vegetable or fruit to try. Saturdays West Palm Beach Green Market at the Downtown Waterfront. Trash Talk BY COLLEEN WRIGHT
Whether your family has celebrated
Earth Day for years or you’re starting a new tradition, add a twist to the traditional activities by giving your children the following unique, green responsibilities at home. Grow a Garden from Garbage With a little TLC, the citrus fruit seeds your family usually tosses into the trash can be nurtured into new trees. The next time your children eat oranges, ask them not to throw out the seeds. Instead, collect them and plant several in a four-inch pot that’s been filled with moist potting soil. The seeds should be planted about one inch deep, and watered well. Your children will love watching for the sprouts to appear, which should happen within a month of planting. After an additional two weeks, the plants can be transplanted into individual pots, where they will continue to grow. This process of turning a piece of garbage into a living, growing plant is sure to challenge your children’s view of “trash”— and may even inspire them to find additional ways to reuse discarded items.

Mission: Recycle Set up a recycle station in your home using separate bins for each recyclable material. By asking your children to help sort items like newspapers, empty milk jugs and food cans into the different containers, you’ll teach them how to separate their trash and get them involved in the process. After they place the items into the right bins, award a small prize. Children may know where to find the small recycle logo on plastic containers, but may not know what the small numbers 1 through 7 mean. Discussing the relationship between these numbers and the plastic’s ability to be recycled will help them figure out which can go into the recycle bins and why. Plastics numbered 1 and 2 are typically recycled through curbside programs, while the higher numbers are not. Your local recycling agency should have this information available, along with guidelines indicating what can or cannot be recycled within the region. From Trash to Cash Your children will quickly learn that it pays to invest their time and hard work in a

garage sale or can collection. Most will have fun hunting for cans or collecting them at home. They’ll love seeing their pile of soda, tea and juice containers slowly grow to fill the top of one bag, and then the next. Take a trip to the local grocery store or recycling center together to turn in the containers. After you’ve discussed how recycling helps the environment, the small
cash reward will be an added bonus. Selling used items from home is another great reminder to think twice before throwing something out. Young children can help sort and organize the items, and older children can act as salespeople, try their hand at organizing the sale, and even write and post fliers—all while learning the benefits of selling and buying used items. Although some foods such as meat and bones cannot be placed in the crock, many leftovers such as fruit and vegetable peels, egg shells, used tea bags and coffee grounds can. To encourage the decomposition process that produces compost, alternate these nitrogen-filled foods with layers of carbon-rich items such as wood chips, dried leaves, and shredded newspaper that is colorless and gloss-free. Get your children involved by putting them in charge of placing scraps into the crock. Before long, they’ll know what items have value and are biodegradable, and which are truly trash. When it comes time to spread the compost over the annual garden or flower bed, you may find that their interest and knowledge have expanded beyond the compost heap, the growing orange tree and the can collection. The values learned from these Earth Day activities will have them thinking green throughout the year. A Special Solution to Sibling Strife BY LARA KRUPICKA
T
Dr. Scott Turansky, co-author of Say Goodbye to Whining, Complaining, and Bad Attitudes...in You and Your Kids! (with Joanne Miller), suggests that parents try instead to treat kids independently. He notes: “Parents inadvertently encourage If your house is anything like mine, you competition by treating them the same. probably feel like you spend much of your Kids look for inequities.” Turansky often time with your kids trying to solve spats reminds parents that “fair doesn’t mean and silence the bickering. It comes in are different from each other. But framing the form of one simple word: “special.” Here are three ways focusing on “special” it as treating them “special” creates a more positive environment. It makes those can increase the peace in your home this differences a good thing. When each summer break: child in a family can feel valued, there’s Parents to Children: Treat each one as less chance for conflict to develop due to special competition. Maybe we think this should go without saying, but kids like to feel they’re special. Look for ways to engage each of your children in an activity all their own, that Even though we know it, we sometimes you don’t share with any of their siblings. confuse our desire to be fair to our Maybe you can play chess with one child children with treating them equally. you save time for doing jigsaw puzzles with the other. Point out the strengths of their particular temperament and ways each one adds to your family. You might say, “Susie, I appreciate how much you love being around people. You do such a good job making our friends feel welcome when they visit.” Or, “Daniel, you make a good leader. I like how other kids look to you to help decide what to do when you’re playing.” Conflict: Address issues individually When bickering and fights take place, it’s our tendency as parents to tackle the offenders as a unit. Instead, Turansky advocates separating children. “Work with one child at a time. Give each one a separate plan, particular to them.”
With this concept in mind, once we’ve deciphered the nature of the issue at hand, we can move on to addressing the conflict one-on-one with our kids. This allows us to observe each child’s role in the conflict and helps isolate the factors involved. Then we can tailor the problemsolving strategy to the individual child’s age, personality and strengths. As we do this, we should emphasize the unique solutions each particular child brings to the situation. Making them feel special as peacemakers empowers kids to become more effective at resolving their conflicts. For example, sometimes arguments ensue when one child wants to be left alone, while another craves attention. Taking them each aside gives you the chance to draw their attention the positives of the interaction. You can say, “Jane, your younger brother really looks

up to you. Do you think maybe he’s just wanting to be with you because of that?” And you can suggest to the younger one that his enthusiasm might be overwhelming to his sister and propose that he find a creative way to invite her to do something fun after she’s had some time alone. Children to Children: Teach them to value each other Parents also need to cast a vision for their kids of having a loving home environment where everyone treats each other as special. Make it a habit to take time to celebrate each other’s accomplishments. Talk with each child about ways they could do something unexpected for their siblings. Encourage them to speak well about and to one another. Then praise them liberally when they do any of these things. When kids begin developing a pattern of displaying these behaviors, the level of conflict in the home subsides. After all, it’s hard to be angry with someone who has done something kind for you. We saw the benefits of casting this vision one year when my then seven-year-old
daughter, Evelyn’s, birthday approached. Everyone in the household grew tired of her (hourly) exclamations of how many days were left until her celebration. At first her sisters hounded her to stop and fights erupted over her right to have a birthday countdown. Then one day my eldest daughter found a solution. She began announcing each morning the number of days remaining for her sister. Evelyn loved the recognition and her excessive counting down stopped. Being made to feel special by her sister solved the struggle they’d been having. Turansky points out that the key element is remembering that we’re trying to teach our child how to relate to other children. “It’s your child’s first class in relationship school,” he says. “They’re building the skills necessary to be successful.” Look for ways to implement these three approaches to bickering in your family. Because when “special” becomes the byword in your home, your family life will be exceptional indeed. Parenting journalist Lara Krupicka especially loves her husband and three girls (who also love each other... most of the time).

Summer Vacation Travel Tips Summer Vacation season will be here before you know it! Traveling with children in tow can sometimes be a headache! Here are some travel tips to help make your summer vacation travel smoother from veteran traveler and co-founder of Hotels.com, Bob Diener.
• Try to travel when lines and airports are not busy so you are not rushed with children. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are the best days to travel. The lines are shorter and fares may be cheaper. • Bring plenty of snacks. Avoid being stuck with no food while stalled on the runway or when stores are closed and the kids get hungry. • Kids under 2 fly free in the US—this is a great bargain. But be careful outside the US! Most carriers charge at least 10% of the fare for kids. • Never pay extra for kids! Every hotel has a different policy regarding allowing kids to stay free—some as high as 19 years old! • Be careful of parking, Wi-Fi and other charges – find properties that offer these for free.
Traveling with a Baby or Toddler? • Consider a suite hotel where you will have 2 rooms, often for the price of one. You can talk, watch TV, etc., while the baby is not bothered in the other room. • Don’t put the essentials like wipes and diapers in checked luggage – you need these with you. • Parents often make the mistake and assume they can find diapers, baby wipes and other supplies. Bring your own supplies and enough for the trip. You don’t want to be switching formula or scrambling for wipes. • Don’t be stressed about having the baby with you. The baby usually takes the cue from the parent and if the parent is calm, the baby is often calm.
• Many hotels offer free food for kids – this adds up. • Find a vacation rental property that can accommodate the entire family and comes with a kitchen – so you don’t have to pay for expensive restaurants. • Always remember to charge video games, iPads, iPods, cell phones and other electronic games the night before a trip. These can keep the kids happy and occupied the entire trip.
